From Wikipedia

The tallest team
Valpo's "World's Tallest Team" was actually a collection of teams that gained Valparaiso national recognition during World War II and began in 1942 when a pair of Michigan City, Indiana brothers, Don and Wally Warnke, joined Valpo when their high school coach, Loren Ellis, was hired as head coach.[6][7] At 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m) tall, the Warnke brothers were ineligible to be drafted into the service. Ellis found several other tall players, including Milt Schoon. Valparaiso did well with the Warnke brothers before Wally was able to enlist and fight in World War II. In 1943, his brother, Don, stayed and was joined by a group of newcomers, including Schoon, Bob Dillie, John Janisch and Alvin Schmidt, as they finished with 17 wins, including a win over No. 1 DePaul in which Schoon held George Mikan to nine points.[6]

Warnke would graduate following the season, but would return as an assistant coach and later the head coach after Ellis left. In the 1944–45 season. The team won its first 11 games, including a program-defining victory over Long Island at Madison Square Garden. Despite finishing 21–3 on the season, the Crusaders were held out of the National Invitation Tournament, with their spot likely going to Midwest powers DePaul and/or Bowling Green.[6]

The iconic photograph of Valparaiso's players standing outside Madison Square Garden is displayed just outside the Athletics-Recreation Center court to this day. The team was inducted into the Valparaiso University Hall of Fame in 2004.[6][7]

DREAM WEAVER

I've just closed my eyes again
Climbed aboard the dream weaver train
Driver take away my worries of today
And leave tomorrow behind
Ooh, dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh, dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light
Fly me high through the starry skies
Maybe to an astral plane
Cross the highways of fantasy
Help me to forget today's pain
Ooh, dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh, dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light

Come on - open your eyes  :o :o :o here's the next Head Coach for Valpo.  Bring back a Drew  ::) Dana Drew-Shaw.

Dana Drew lettered in basketball as a point guard from 1990-1995, leading UT to three NCAA appearances and one WNIT berth. She guided UT to three regular season MAC Championships and three MAC Tournament Titles. Drew was first-team Academic All-American twice (1994 and 1995). She was also Academic All-MAC three years from 1991 to 1994.Drew was named MAC Player of The Year and first-team All-MAC in her sophomore and junior years. She was second-team All-MAC as a senior in 1994-95. She also led her team in scoring as a sophomore and junior. She averaged 11.7 ppg as a freshman, 15.0 ppg as a sophomore, 20.1 ppg as a junior and 19.0 ppg as a senior. She sat out the 1992-93 season due to knee surgery, playing just three games that season. Drew was named to the MAC All-Tournament team on four occasions and was the MAC Tournament Most Valuable Player three times. Drew is currently ranked first on the all-time career assists leaders with (659) and fourth in scoring (1,919). As a sophomore she played on the United States Olympic Festival team. As a freshman, she was named to the MAC All-Freshman team. She was MAC "Player of The Week" six times. Drew is married to former UT Academic All-America basketball player Casey Shaw. They live in Italy, where Shaw is a professional basketball player.

I do remember the Original Valpo Joe - way back when Clean Gene Barrow coached the Crusaders.  The Hill Top was rocking and the support that the MBB team was given was awesome. Tom Smith, Dick Jones etc were fun to watch.  Now we wonder if we can beat Elon or Stonehill. What the hell has happened :'(

In the good Ole' Days Valpo always cracked the top 100.  Now Valpo drifts 100 pts lower.  Time to make your move Valpo you've got to prove that you can play with the BIG BOYS and regain the respect that the Drews built.   :thewave:  Go Freakin' Beacons!!!!!

The Shield right behind Home Plate during the Red Sox - White Sox game on Monday (Bosox slaughter) and again on Tuesday along with Valparaiso University banner   I'm guessing that cost a few coins!  Well worth it !!! GO VALPO !!!

This team has come a long way since November.  From struggles with D2 teams to making a D1 Top 25 team go into 2 OT.  The Turn Overs and poor calls against them made the difference in W/L.  Granted a Ref has the right to ring someone up with a T - but usually there is a warning.  Home Team rules.  Hoping the The Beacons see the Light and continue with the focus on D and good things will happen.  You've got to believe that this was a pivotal game!!!  GO FREAKIN' BEACONS

My vote for a 1-6 November is shaping up pretty good.

I think Valpo will pull out one of the games in the Bahamas by 1 or 2 points when Anderson, Edwards, Taylor or Barrett has a good scoring game. The Beacons get 2 wins in November.

My vote for November 0 - 7 looks good :(

This isn't a bad team. But it's not a good team either. We had an opportunity to win and Edwards blew it.
This is a bad team. Bad teams lose to UIC at home.

Freakin' Beacons now 0 -4,  wait, just wait the coach has a plan. You learn through failure!  Keep failing and they will be ready for ARCH MADNESS! Get your tickets NOW.

Valpo Basketball / Re: Why Matt is a Good Coach
November 11, 2021, 06:35:47 PM

One thing you can take to the bank on every team since Matt became head coach are debilitating injuries to key players that linger on forever and kill any chance we have to build momentum and win consistently.

'16-17 AP goes down 2 games before the end of the regular season. We were 23-6 at the time, had beaten MVC champion Missouri State at their place, had the conf. regular season wrapped up, and were heavily favored to win the conf. tournament. We lost our last 3 games, including an upset 1st round conf. tournament loss to go 24-9 and lose out on going to the Dance. BTW we had already overcome the season ending loss of Jubril only 9 games in.

'17-18 we start out 8-0. Then we lose Burton to grades. Then we lose Tevonn for 4 games, losing 3. He comes back but his back issue lingers for the rest of the season. We finish 15-16.

'18-19 Micah Bradford plays 3 min. in 1 game before losing him for the season due to a lingering back problem. After starting conf. play, we lose Ryan for 13 games. We were never the same. 13-18

'19-20 we lose Ryan again - this time for 17 games. After finally getting Ryan back, JFL gets mono, misses 2 games, and comes back while still not 100% and leads us to the conf. tournament championship game. Final record 19-16. BTW only Eron played in all 35 games due to a bevy of misc. injuries and illnesses.

'20-21 we lose Nick Robinson for 20 games, Morgan for 13 games, and Connor for 10 games, Emil for 26 games, and Lorange for 20. Then add in the lingering effect of Mileek's 50 pound Hostess Twinkee weight gain.

'21-22 The way this season is starting off with Ben and Connor already injured and out, who knows? We've already lost 2 exhibition games and Toledo, all of which we would have won.

This trend is absurdly ridiculous. It defies all odds, and it never ends. Maybe we need an exorcist, and I'm only half kidding.

Anyone who says this is no different than what all teams go through (not in a given season, but over a 5 year span) show your evidence. Rest assured, there won't be any takers. Also, I hope no one says Jubril got what he deserved. That was one of the biggest miscarriages of justice I've ever seen.

[/quote]
Now it's if only 3 of their top 6 players could play we'd be a contender!!! Give me a Freakin' Beacon Break.  Adjust - adjust - adjust or continue to be would've, could've, should've  :o
