I really want to complain about how bad we are, but we had 8 players and haven't played or even practiced much for weeks. What a weird year.

I hope the novelty of reporting JFL game results wears off quickly.

I don't even know who this Jubril Frohman-Lafferty guy is.

Whatever happened to the Northern Iowa kid Green?  Is he hurt ?

"Panthers head coach Ben Jacobson announced on [Dec 13] that junior point guard AJ Green would undergo hip surgery this week and miss the rest of the season."

Agreed with nkvu, it's hard to draw too much from an ump-show like that.

But I'm getting the feeling that Lottich's system *requires* players with very high basketball IQs (Ognacevic, Barrett, Krikke, Clay, Edwards, Sackey) and if we can't fill the roster with them we round out with raw athleticism (Kpegeol, Robinson, McMillan, Morgan).

Which makes me wonder why crunch time sees guys from the second group on the floor. Maybe my read is all wrong, or maybe the hope is for athletic heroics to clinch the W... but I want to see the first group more when the chips are down.

Again, hard to divine much from this game given the lack of any cadence or flow, but if we're gonna fall back on "this is a young team", let's let the youth drive the bus.

Most of that stuff is just a big boondoggle and always has been. People/companies participated, myself included, because that's the way the game was played. Since these cities have shut down and all of that stuff cancelled, I haven't talked to a person who says they miss it.
Not to take us further down this tangent, but... I haven't talked to many peoole who don't miss it at this point. Clearly we know different people
I'm referring to those who pay the bills for their organizations and employees to attend conferences, trade shows, symposiums, lectures, training sessions, airline tickets, hotels, rental cars, Meals, mileage, etc. Add to that wining and dining clients, tickets to sporting events, theater, meals, bar tabs, gifts, corporate tables at community dinner events, golf outings, etc. To your point, I'm sure there are many people on the receiving end (employees and clients alike) who miss it dearly.  ;)

I see we are natural enemies: Sales vs Finance, a rivalry for the ages!

NCAA ≠ power conference schools. If it ever comes to pass, professional NCAA athletes would be paid by their schools, where the money is, not the NCAA.
FWIW, this is why paying college athletes would widen the gap between power schools and everyone else.

Quote from: SanityLost17 on April 29, 2020, 12:28:59 PMI don't actually think we should do this, but... Lottich could just start marketing to 2-3 year guys.   Say.... "hey, come here for 2 years and declare for a transfer and see what you're options are.  If you think you can get into a top half Big10 school or top half ACC school, go for it.  If not stay one more year and then try again after your 3rd year.  If they still don't want you screw them and we will beat them in the NCAA tournament and tell them to go $)@#$*)# themselves." If I was a player that wasn't getting love from the big guys out of high school but thought I could play, I would love that kinda talk.

Frankly I think a lot of mid majors, especially in conferences with strong competition year in and year out, will take this approach. Instead of an Alec or Javon being a once-in-a-decade find, each team will have one or two of these guys on the roster every year - because now they can play 32min a game for a few years instead of taking a chance at earning a rotation spot at a high major, knowing they can transfer without penalty.

Think of it like the 1or 2 and done kids who go to Kentucky etc then bail for the draft, but for mid-majors.

I noticed a little while back that Javon retweets a "prosperity gospel" preacher. Think Joel Osteen, but based in Baltimore iirc. Really made me question the advice and influences he listens to, but I hope he succeeds if he ends up transferring.

Ouch

This board until March: FIRE LOTTICH (myself included)

Also this board: AWFUL NONSENSE RANKINGS

Guys, a lot of us have been constantly frustrated at Matt's inability to meet our expectations and live up to the Drews' legacy, raw winning % aside. This ranking takes expectations and program history into accout... And y'all are angry about it!

Honestly though, it's pretty endearing. Nobody gets to criticize our guy but us!  ;D

Quote from: PlumStreetBum on February 27, 2019, 11:26:28 PMSuccess is 12 wins, or a Lottich firing. I'll be happy with one of those. His guys didn't play with any effort tonight, and that was the last thing we had to hang our hats on.

Well, we won 12 games against Valley opponents, and we had a helluva run at the end. And most importantly, the team gave incredible effort, especially compared to last year.

Glad to be wrong about Lottich's program. So glad.

Dude, I'm as hard on this team (and coach) as anyone and I think you're nuts. Barring a comeback, this team finishes 17-16, 10-10 against Valley opponents, with a NET in the top 140 or so. Average? Maybe, yeah. Sucks? Lol not even close

Man I hate losing to Loyola. Something about them just grates on me. I miss their days as a doormat in the Horizon.

Really hope we have another big comeback in us.

What an uninspired offensive performance. Seemed out of sorts and sloppy. Bit embarrassing, hopefully someone can hit a 3 tomorrow.

Defense stepped up though. D like that and our offensive average will at least give us a shot against Loyola.

Valpo Basketball / Re: Lottich's Contract
February 29, 2020, 05:36:44 PM
I could have lived with a .500 season if we'd avoided the PIG. It's disappointing but hard to be really angry, though, because Evansville sh!t the bed so hard. Everyone got an extra road win, which devalues a .500 record in a tough conference.

If we avoid major transfers, we could be a top 4 team next year. The off-season transfer market will be Lottich's toughest test yet.

Quote from: vok22 on February 19, 2020, 09:32:44 PMI am sorry I did not want to have to bring this up on here and I did not think I would be using this excuse after building a 19 point deficit, but I think the leading cause of that loss was officiating. I know, it sounds like a terrible, whiny excuse, but frankly I don't care. As much as you will say "oh we built ourselves a 19 point deficit we have nobody to blame but ourselves" you could say the same thing about Drake blowing a 19 point deficit. And they blew it while receiving EVERY SINGLE 50/50 call that was to be had, to the point where the Drake announcers were questioning how the was possibly a foul called. They even said McMillan's 5th foul was exactly how the coaches teach defense. We go to overtime with a 34-5 free throw deficit (which yes I know a lot of that was Robbins being fouled on the inside). But really? We only did enough on offense to draw five free throws worth of fouls? I don't think so. As for Freeman's foul, it was all ball. Not a speck of arm was touched on that. Oh and lets talk about the chance to take the lead halfway through overtime. The ball is clearly knocked off of Drake's hand right in front of the ref. Literally 2 feet away he knocks the ball right off his hand out of bounds. Drake ball. Absolutely atrocious officiating that JUST HAPPENED to take out our 2 top scorers before/early in overtime. There is no doubt in my mind we win that game with Freeman and McMillan playing, and there is no doubt in my mind they should have been. I have already addressed the deficit. I do not necessarily think the first half was anybody's fault. We just weren't hitting our shots and they have a fantastic rim protector inside, taking away that option to drive and get inside shots at a decent pace. We stuck to our guns, and viola, the shooting evened out and we got ourselves back into the game.

Or... Call one successful play during the scoring drought in the first half and win in regulation.

Never blame the refs (absent concrete proof of bribes). Control what you can and overcome what you can't.

Quote from: NativeCheesehead on February 19, 2020, 09:22:46 PMFree Throw attempts. 34-9.

Good point. We didn't drive to the basket nearly enough.
#24
Once again, our inability to make adjustments during a scoring drought costs us a game. I know some of you want to blame the players, but they don't draw up the plays when the motion isn't working.

Come to think of it, no one draws them up...

Quote from: VUSL98 on February 15, 2020, 06:51:50 PMThat wasn't pretty.  Poor passing leading to turnovers.  No strength to the basket.  Apparently, getting to the game site early means nothing.
Quote from: valpotx on February 15, 2020, 06:52:14 PMFrom down 7 with around 1 minute left, to down 17.  That was the worst stretch of basketball I have ever seen.
Quote from: nkvu on February 15, 2020, 06:55:43 PMCorrection. We stunk it up early, and we stunk it up late making the entire first half stink. Man, we just cannot play decent in consecutive games. We lose our "glue guy" and the team just falls completely apart. We don't play defense, we don't have an offense. Maybe we'll get it together and play an outstanding second half and only lose by ten. Pitiful performance, just pitiful. Thankfully I don't have a tv feed here so I don't have to see this performance. It was way painful listening it.
I didn't see the game I only saw the final score but I thought what a nail biter of a game this must of been to a team we probably should have beaten easily but then I read these comments and thought, wow, we really came a long way back to win this one.

These are the reason I've been trying to not comment until after games, and even then for an hour or so. This team is unpredictable from half to half and it's useful to just, you know... have a scotch and not get too high or low.

Though I will admit to a fist pump after the Freeman dunk  ;D
