This game is essential. We cannot get caught looking ahead to our game with Drake in Des Moines. We have to get back to .500 and complete step two of the path to avoiding Thursday. Illinois State is an aggressive team but they foul a lot so we should be able to take advantage of that. They prefer playing faster it seems and they like to shoot. If the shots are falling they're really tough (and they tend to be pretty good at home). We definitely need to come out and play well to win this one. I'll probably have to watch this one on the computer though because I definitely don't want to miss UNI @Loyola on ESPN2. That game should be amazing.

Of our 3 remaining road games this one is actually the least important.  Winning either of the other 2 would be better than winning this one, but since those 2 will be hard to win I suppose this one is the most important.

I guess it just depends on how you look at it.

A big part of getting into the top 6 of a conference is beating the teams behind you in the standings. If you're trying to not be a bottom rung team you have to beat the teams behind you in the conference. It's a simple as that. Does it have as much obvious and overt meaning to the seeding and Valpo's fortunes vis a vis Thursday night? No but a loss here is absolutely devastating to those hopes when you realize that we have to play Drake and Indiana State on the road where they've been terrific defending home court, and a surging Missouri State team finally starting to live up to its talent as well as a healthy and very strong Bradley team. There's no other way of looking at it. We need this game. This team in the position they are in cannot get caught looking ahead at any point. The next game on the schedule is the most important game until it's over and then the next one takes its place. That must be the mindset of this team going forward if they are to finish in the top six. Lock in, focus, and play well. Go Valpo! I BELIEVE!

Valpo's defense has improved both for the season and more so within the conference. From this point on, if they play good defense, they could beat anyone on the rest of the schedule. Assuming they don't throw up air balls every game.

Valpo seems to be playing better and ISU is awful. If Valpo plays their game, it will be a decisive win.

This has to be sort of underwhelming for Mitch Holthus (a very good play-by-play announcer). He is the radio play-by-play guy for the Kansas City Chiefs. Going from the Super Bowl to an MVC game in Normal, IL in two weeks is a pretty big change.

Sackey just had one of the worst back-to-back plays I have seen in a long time.  A lazy ass pass, and then didn't hustle back on defense, until it was too late.

It kills me how many times we make lazy passes, assuming that the defenders will just stand still.  Clay just did the same thing on that last second basket.  Pathetic and lazy ass passing.

Correction. We stunk it up early, and we stunk it up late making the entire first half stink. Man, we just cannot play decent in consecutive games. We lose our "glue guy" and the team just falls completely apart. We don't play defense, we don't have an offense. Maybe we'll get it together and play an outstanding second half and only lose by ten. Pitiful performance, just pitiful.

Thankfully I don't have a tv feed here so I don't have to see this performance. It was way painful listening it.

Never going to rule this Valpo team out but wow was that an awful first half.

For how lauded we were for our improved performance on defense vs Loyola and then last time out .... this was equally bad.

Needless to say, we caught Southern Illinois on a bad night .... and are catching Illinois state on a good night.

Because UNI Loyola is on ESPN2 and starting right now. I encourage you all to switch over so we can watch good teams play basketball. This is another game that just makes the decision on Lottich so much more agonizing. Because I will NOT TOLERATE four more years of this. This is frustrating and awful and I CAN'T BELIEVE how unprepared we are. Spare me the young team BS We have FOUR MORE CONFERENCE GAMES AFTER THIS. They're Sophomores and Juniors as far as I'm concerned. There should be a LOT more up than down by now and there isn't. There just isn't. This is a game we HAD TO WIN and we came out and played our worst effort of the entire year. "They played harder than us." That's ridiculous! COME ON VALPO! DO BETTER! DEMAND BETTER!

How can one team suck so bad in one half and be so great in the second?  Incredible!!!  JFL - Incredible!!!  I swear this team is forcing me, yes forcing me to drink. Have to go for one now so I can calm down enough to get some sleep tonight.

Congrats to the team.

With that last steal, JFL has now tied one hell of a player in Lubos Barton, with 63 steals in 1 season.  Congrats man!

When they showed the graphic with about five and a half minutes to go and JFL trailing by two they said "He might get there tonight we have 5:27 to go." Well... He did... And we're a lot better off for it! Go Valpo! I BELIEVE!

As much as that last play was JFL sealing the game with a dunk you have to credit Clay for breaking through a screen and face guarding his defender...he had his right hand out the entire time to make the deflection to tip the ball for JFL!
Hell of a play Clay

Wow, that was a lot of drama.

How many of us thought we would dig ourselves a hole and then make a come back just to come up short?

Congrats on the road win and getting back to .500.

We've had so many of those games this year.  Our season was a couple of key components short of being something much more pleasing. It's really easy to underestimate the effect of Fazekas on our recent turnaround.  With him in the game, the 3-point attempts from those who haven't proven themselves to be consistent have gone down.

ESPN Gamecast gave ISUr a 95.3% chance of winning at halftime...glad the team now knows what it feels like to finish the huge comeback. I hope for less need to pull off these dramatic finishes in the future though...

The striking similarity between the play that ended this game and the play that ended the Loyola game should not be lost on anyone. That was great defense. No controversy there. Glad this one went our way! Great job by Donovan Clay! Go Valpo! I BELIEVE!

I think so too Donovan!  :) These quotes are very telling about how the team feels about Lottich, Personal feelings of anyone aside their feelings are the ones that matter most. Clearly he still has their attention and support. Clearly they are still fighting for him and listening to him. And that's all we really need to see and know. If we can close this season on a run the decision is a no-brainer but I think this game right here and Clay's response showing how the team feels and the way Javon fought in this game showing his commitment to Lottich as the team leader has made the decision. I think he's going to be extended and I think that's the right call. The young core is taking shape, the incoming class looks good, and this team is hungry motivated and fighting hard and just now starting to get results. This is all progress. This is all positive. Go Valpo! I BELIEVE!

https://twitter.com/NWIOren/status/1228927914340737025

It's interesting how easy he makes it sound but yes as the old adage says hard work gets rewarded. And I'm so glad to see these young men finally see the results of their effort and get that reward payoff at the end! It's been a long time coming! Now let's win in Des Moines and go over .500 in MVC Play for the first time in over a year! Go Valpo! I BELIEVE!

Tex - I didn't know illinois st. Was against Valpo joining the league.  How do you know this?  Illinois state seems to be the only team we have a winning record against since joining.

Didn't we recruit a player that ended up choosing Illinois state over us?

Great win and that was fun.  Would like to enjoy it more but a big part of me is why should I be happy about beating the second to last place team.  It should be expected.

They beat UNI. Record just does not matter when playing on the road in conference.

Taylor Bruninga is the player who ended up at Illinois St. He's battled injury nearly since he got there and looked terrible last night.

I thought the issue with ISU was their fans talking Valpo down which, considering their program, is laughable.

I didn't see the game I only saw the final score but I thought what a nail biter of a game this must of been to a team we probably should have beaten easily but then I read these comments and thought, wow, we really came a long way back to win this one.

Impressive to say the least. Put him on the payroll. Deserves it more then any coach.

Missouri State and Drake win to create a 4 way tie for 5th in the conference with VU and Indiana State. Evansville gave Drake a pretty tough game, we need to go in there and just have a complete game. Winning on Wednesday would go a long way to keeping us out of the Thursday games.

Fan message boards should never be taken as the voice of all fans, but at least one person on redbirds.net acknowledged the less-than-appreciative stance of ISU fans towards the addition of Valpo and Loyola.

Let's not forget how upset most were where the Valley added those pathetic underachieving Valparaiso and Loyola programs; two programs that have consistently beat us like a drum since they began MVC play.
We are now the dregs of the MVC.

These are the reason I've been trying to not comment until after games, and even then for an hour or so. This team is unpredictable from half to half and it's useful to just, you know... have a scotch and not get too high or low.

The highlight from the game below is when the Redbirds defeated VU in 2018.  They were so proud of themselves for dunking on a then-freshman Mileek.

Good thing that their fans were so proud of them then, because since then, Mileek and his friends have reeled off 5 straight wins, culminating the humiliation on Saturday night on their home court.

Gotta love Karma.  I hope IL St fans are upset and seething about VU's entry into the MVC for a very long time.
