I haven't heard the details yet but 1A Lutheran Indy beat 2A #1 Indy Ritter 42-6. It's remarkably shocking since Ritter played in the 2A state championship game two years ago and only had two losses last year against catholic schools 3A Brebeuf Jesuit and 4A Bishop Chatard.

Almost forgot to mention that Ritter won the 2A state championship last year 56-6.

Speaking of Lutheran HS's, Lutheran HS of Colorado played Lutheran South (Houston, TX) last week, a 56-55 overtime game.  Maybe there is a player or two to be scouted:

Things aren't going as well the last two Fridays for LHSI football. On Sept. 5 Lutheran lost to 2A power and probably the toughest team (maybe) in the conference when Triton Central's female kicker made the winning FG on the last play of the game giving TCHS the win 17-14.

Then on Sept 12 Lutheran lost 29-28 to 2A Heritage Christian in another devastating loss. HCHS is rebuilding a program that had been on the outs but has a strong tradition of going very far in the IHSAA tournament.

So that makes the Saints 2-2 and desperately needing some conference wins.

LHSI takes on Indy Park Tudor (0-4)(Yogi Farrell's HS) next week which should be a Saints win because PTS plays a multitude of sports fairly well, including ice hockey, lacrosse, field hockey, crew, golf, swimming besides the usual but football not so well.

Lutheran knocked off Eastern Hancock at the Hancock County school, which can be seen off of I-70, 21-19. They will next take on North Vermillion, 13-0 (just off Hwy 63 north of Terre Haute) at Bishop Roncalli's field (3.4 miles from Lutheran's location in southeast Indy http://tinyurl.com/o9t28tl) this Friday in the south semi-state for the chance to play in the 1A state championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Black Friday.

AND REGIONAL CHAMPS!

Coach Dave Pasch was a successful and regional winning coach at North Putnam HS near Greencastle, IN who was a lay member at Peace Lutheran-Greencastle who decided to use his God given skill to serve. Program creator, Ray Schultz, who had the football field at Indy Manual HS named for him for his long time service in Indy Public Schools, convinced him LHSI was the place for Coach Pasch.

Falcons take on unfamiliar territory

CAYUGA, Ind. — The North Vermillion football team has been at home the last few weeks, but on Friday, the Falcons go on the road for the first time in a month.

We have had a great time playing at home and we love the atmosphere in Gibson Field with our fans, but the natural grass is dying down so to play on field turf will be great for both teams," North Vermillion coach Brian Crabtree said.

Also, they will be the underdogs for the first time this season in the IHSAA Class 1A semi-state against Indianapolis Lutheran at Indianapolis Roncalli, but Crabtree said the Falcons' drive through the season will give them some experience.

"They have not played a Class 1A team and have played Class 2A and Class 3A teams," Crabtree said. "Even though we played mostly 1A teams, we play in what I think is the premier small-school conference in the state with the history of teams that have been in the state title game. I would not change our schedule at all."

Crabtree also said that with the Saints not playing far and with the expectations of a big-city school, the Falcons could have a chance.

"The pressure is on them because they are in Indianapolis and they have played the tougher competition. The only thing that we have to do is go in and play the best that we can," Crabtree said. "They are almost like us in that both of us got to a Semi-state game for the first time ever, but once again I think the pressure is on them."

Even with the pressure, the Falcons will be facing a big athletic team that Crabtree says is one of the most athletic teams they have face all season.

"They are very big along the offensive line that averages 300 pounds and on the defensive line, they have people who are 320 and 306, so they are a very big team and they are also a very athletic team," Crabtree said. "This is the fastest team we have played this season.

"(Lutheran's Jake) Reid is 6-foot-3 inches and 320 pounds and he is a tough player on the offensive line for them and on defense, you have to focus a lot on him. They are a big team, so we will have to use our quickness to get past them."

Along with the athleticism, North Vermillion must also worry about Lutheran's depth.

"They have six guys that can run the ball well and that just shows the depth that they have," Crabtree said. "They don't have one person you have to focus on, they have many people that can do the job and they are all good."

The Falcons counter on offence with Jacob Earl, who has 1,911 yards and 33 touchdowns with Cody Wright passing for 1,934 yards and 26 touchdowns and running for 807 more yards with 12 touchdowns and Ethan Lee had ran for 585 yards and two touchdowns and caught 40 passes for 683 yards and nine more scores.

On defense, Ethan Weir has 144 tackles with 29 tackles for loss while Corey Davis has 103 tackles, Dakoda Chapman has 92 tackles with 20 tackles for loss and Zeth Jumps has 64 tackles and eight sacks.

Crabtree says the Falcons have dealt with people counting them out all season and Friday is no different. "This is a team that was picked by some to finish in the middle of the pack of the WRC this season, so we just keep surprising people every week," Crabtree said.

The game will start at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on WKZS-FM 103.1

Unfortunately the Saints went down in defeat tonight, 37-19 to North Vermillion. The Falcons turned out to be the better disciplined team. It was tough watching the bigger team lose to a team they really should have beaten.

It was a hugely emotional loss for the boys and the coaching staff.

Semistate loss ends magical run for Lutheran

For one half of football at Roncalli Friday night, Class A No. 8 Lutheran and No. 2 North Vermillion battled in what couldn't have been a much tighter game. But the second half was a different story.

Trailing 19-17 at halftime, North Vermillion outscored the Saints 20-0 over the final two quarters, dominating both sides of the line of scrimmage to pull away 37-19 and win the school's first semistate title.

The Falcons (13-0), who will play Pioneer for the Class A title a week from today at Lucas Oil Stadium, rolled up 416 yards of offense — 231 in the second half — and held the Saints to just 89 yards over the final 24 minutes.

"They present some huge problems for a defense because they put a lot of athletes in space," said Lutheran coach Dave Pasch, whose team finished 10-4. "They create a lot of matchup issues. They make guys, especially at the linebacker level, miss. They ran their offense well (and) put us in a tough spot."

Falcon running back Jacob Earl ran for 173 yards on just 16 carries, but the key to the NV offense was quarterback Cody Wright. The junior ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 97 and another score. The Falcons ran for 319 yards.

"Our line made it amazing for us," Wright said. "I could fit a truck through there."

North Vermillion struck first when Wright hit Ethan Lee on a 51-yard scoring pass. The Saints came right back, using a 35-yard screen pass from Jake Reid to Dylan Goddard to set up Reid's 13-yard swing pass to Andre Jones for the touchdown.

Following a 33-yard field from NV's Adam Scott, the Saints drove 65 yards in just under two minutes. Jones carried twice for 37 yards on the drive, including the final 21 for the score. The Saints' second missed extra point of the night kept the lead at 12-10 with 10:54 left in the first half.

The Falcons fumbled on their next possession to give the Saints the ball at the NV 39. Nine plays later and facing a fourth and goal at the Falcon 8, Reid hit Cody Moncel, who fumbled the ball as he crossed the goal line. But teammate Keyen Nowakoski was there and grabbed the ball out of the air for the score, which pushed Lutheran's lead to 19-10 with 6:14 left in the half.

But the Falcons would reclaim momentum, driving 82 yards to close within 19-17 on Gilbert's 5-yard touchdown at the 2:44 mark of the first half. They went back ahead on their second possession of the third quarter, taking advantage of great field position to drive 39 yards for Wright's first rushing TD of the night.

Lutheran fumbled on its next possession, and the Falcons countered by driving 57 yards in seven plays to take a 30-19 lead. Every play was a run, including Wright's 1-yard sneak with 1:23 left in the quarter.

The Falcons would tack on a late TD with just 1:56 left, while the Saints had a turnover and then lost the ball on downs on their final two possessions.

The loss was an emotional one for Pasch. "This group of seniors was the group we started our youth league with seven years ago," he said. "We think we're on the right. We've certainly been led in the right direction."

Keyen Nowakoski was there and grabbed the ball out of the air for the score, which pushed Lutheran's lead to 19-10 with 6:14 left in the half.

Keyen is the brother of St.Joe College-Rensselaer D coach Jensen Nowakoski, who also starred at Lutheran when the Saints captured a sectional title.
