Valpo Basketball / No automatic bid to NIT
October 27, 2023, 06:57:28 PM
The Nit has changed it's format and eliminated the automatic big for regular season conference champs who lose their conference tournaments.  Instead the first 12 teams will be the top two ranked teams from each of the six power conferences the remaining 20 schools will be the  highest ranked remaining teams.

Sports Talk / How did this happen?
August 09, 2023, 11:33:29 PM
Chicago State just signed twin brothers Matt and Ryan Bewley.  They are 6/9 power forwards who were ranked the 2nd and 20th best players in the 2023 recruiting class. instead  they played in the Overtime Elite program which just sent four players to the NBA draft.

Ragland apparently didn't like the roster he inherited as  Evansville has nine in the portal.

Nearer to home, a former football opponent  Trinity International University is closing their classroom and moving all undergraduate classes online.

From Christianity today website

TIU Announces Plans to Move Undergrad Program Online

"The Deerfield, Illinois, institution—which includes a graduate school and law school in addition to an influential evangelical seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS)—will continue to offer in-person education through its divinity school in Illinois and law school in California.

TIU's media release characterized the discontinuation of its residential undergraduate program as a "transformational strategy" that will "position the University for long-term growth, industry leadership, and continued academic excellence."

Like higher education institutions across the country, TIU–and its seminary–have seen consistent enrollment declines over the last 20 years. As of last fall, the school had 356 full-time undergrad students on campus.

Friday's announcement comes almost a year after TEDS cut nearly $1 million in spending since the number of full-time students at the evangelical seminary dropped 44 percent in 20 years. The cut in spending involved the elimination of at least seven faculty positions. At the time, TIU said that budget reduction was the first part of a three-phase process of "creating efficiencies."

Wow a little Karma there.  Do I disremember or didn't Drake try to hire Homer when Bryce was a sophomore?

Quote from: VU2014 on April 04, 2022, 02:59:42 PMTo be fair to Edwards. He indicated in his interview with Paul that this wasn't about wanting to be closer to home or feeling homesick but feeling like he didn't quite fit into the style of basketball that Valpo plays and wanted to go somewhere he felt he would fit more

And to be fair to Lottich I can't imagine Drew didn't put in a call to his former assistant before recruiting Edwards.

Quote from: VALPO LI on December 09, 2021, 02:16:07 PMLipscomb is in Nashville and I can't see Belmont wanting to share that market with an other MVC team.

Belmont and Lipscomb have one of the greatest rival traditions in college basketball called the battle of the boulevard going back over 60 years ago when they were NAIA .  The schools are actually on the same street about three miles apart.  They still play twice a year even though their in different conferences.

Not to be a glass half empty guy, but in four months this thread topic will be a decade old.  On the plus side, the Valley should be very skeptical about assurances made before admitting UMKC.

Quote from: wh on November 17, 2021, 09:15:25 AMSince I'm on my soapbox, let me also say this. Loyola receiving an invitation to join the Valley was the most undeserved "promotion" I've ever seen

Absolutely right, and what did they do about that.

I've been on this board for decades and I've read post after post about now is the time to make a  commitment to athletics: after the sweet 16, after joining the Horizon, after joining the Valley.  Well, 20 years ago the  Gentile Center was basically a brand new version of the ARC, and after a dozen years it was renovated into the first class arena Valpo has talked about forever.  That got Loyola in, and rather then just being happy to be in, they took advantage.  Since then they built a 3 story athletic training building and a 2 story practice facility.
They have been competitive in every sport and maybe it's an advantage not dealing with short armed Lutherans, but Loyola seems to be very  skilled in finding deep pocket donors.  The Loyola people I deal with see the 10 as a stepping stone.  After being blocked by DePaul time after time, the dream is to force their way into the Big East.  I wouldn't go that far but a I do see an athletic department working hand in hand with the administration with a  hefty enrollment increase to encourage it to continue.  That's a real attraction for quality coaches.. Loyola will have a larger recruiting footprint then most of the conference and with the Big East poaching the top 2 or 3 teams they should be able to compete in the top half of the league.

Actually Loyola has been to the sweet sixteen in 4 different decades I find it hard  to question their commitment to succeeding in the A10.
