Sports Talk / Purdue Northwest

Interesting things going on with Purdue regional campuses. Perhaps heading to D2. The GLIAC is in the process of losing six schools to a different D2 conference.

Valpo Basketball / The Tracey Dorow Experience
January 16, 2015, 07:34:04 AM
How many games have we played even or better in the first half only to get blown out in the second half. It appears we start games with a pretty good game plan but are being seriously out coached at half time. Game after game our opponents seem to make adjustments and we do not.

I was a big proponent of making a coaching change after three years of under 30% winning. Unfortunately, we remain in the same area and though there is some young talent you have to begin to wonder if their is a light at the end of this coaching tunnel.

Will Dorow get the 4 year Carlson plan or do we know what we have after 2+ years?

Valpo Football / Interesting stat
October 19, 2014, 02:20:30 PM
In yesterday's game #34 Brandon Slattery was listed as making 4 tackles. Interesting because we was dropped from the published roster weeks ago. Also interesting that he was a TE back when he was on the team. I am curious who #34 was and why our stats people don't know.

We still list guys on the 2 deep who don't seem to play.

Finally why is it that every other school lists a participation stat page but we do not. You have to go to an opponents website to see who played (or might have).

Valpo Football / 2014 Football Roster
July 24, 2014, 10:25:38 AM
Some disappointments today....the football roster has been updated and we apparently lost 4 more recruits:

QB Conner Smith from Indianapolis
DB Javonta Swinton from Florida (Stetson)
DE Zac Wright from Tennessee
WR Patrick Zeller from San Diego

All these guys looked to have potential.

An update on the two recruits we lost earlier:
DB Christian Coleman is going to run track at Tennessee
OL Brendan Weis is at Arkansas State

Ron Hunter returns...the new venue is allowing better scheduling...

IUPUI hoops home schedule has plenty of intrigue
David Woods, david.woods@indystar.com 11:44 a.m. EDT May 14

Ron Hunter is returning to IUPUI . . . and bringing his college basketball team with him.

Georgia State, led by the longtime former Jaguars coach, is among five non-conference opponents announced Wednesday by IUPUI. The Summit League team is set to play its first home schedule at the newly renovated Fairgrounds Coliseum.

The Jaguars' home opener will be Nov. 14 against Indiana State. IUPUI's other opponents are Ball State (Nov. 22), Georgia State (Nov. 29), Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 13) and South Alabama (Dec. 20).

Hunter's Georgia State team is led by his son, R.J., a Pike High School graduate who was last season's Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.

Eastern Kentucky is coming off an NCAA tournament appearance after beating Belmont in the Ohio Valley Conference tourney.

South Alabama is coached by Matthew Graves, a former player and associate head coach at Butler. Graves' staff includes Darnell Archey, another former Butler player who holds the NCAA Division I record for consecutive free throws made (85).

Sports Talk / Something in the water at Butler?
April 24, 2014, 07:35:02 AM
Butler's mens team had 5 players leave during and after this season.  The women's team just fired their coach after 4 players (including 3 starters) left immediately after the season.  They also lost one during the season.

Amazingly, since we joined the Horizon our women's tennis team has lost every conference match until this weekend's victory over Green Bay. With a loss the next day we sit at 1-51 career in the HL.  We are 13-134 overall in the same timeframe.

With 4 games remaining Ron is 28 points from being the all-time leading scorer in the D League!

Any word on how the existing players are transitioning to the new coach?  Did we lose anyone at semester?

Valpo Basketball / Women's Team
November 15, 2013, 12:47:13 PM
We left 3 open scholarships this year so we began practice with 12 plus a walk on (kudos for that).  2 players are transfers and will not play this year.  3 more are hurt and 2 of those are apparantly out for the year.  1 is recovering from a concussion. We were down to 7 for the Illinois game.  This is sounding hauntingly familiar to 2 years ago.

It seems that every week this is the same responses to the same questions.  I think Todd and coach even have the same clothes on each week.  Were these all produced at the same time?

Shake it up.....changes sides, do it somewhere else...how about asking about the development of the recruiting class.  This class was trumpted as a good one and it seems like only about 5 are contributing today, why?

Valpo Football / Football....on a positive note
October 07, 2013, 12:49:59 PM
Check this out...this website actually ranks all college football teams and has us 589 out of 752.  Perhaps not so positive...hopefully the football schedulers will see this and get us 3 preseason wins next year.

Valpo Football / It is really hard to be a VU football fan
September 15, 2013, 12:22:09 PM
I had basically stopped paying attention to our football team. When Carlson was named coach I decided to try to follow it again.  It is incredibly hard to follow this team and I am not even talking about the wins and losses.

There was no legimate preview ever published on this years team.  I do not count the coach and a few players talking.  The weekly preview is a joke and it basically is the same each week.  Players disappear from the roster, players are missing for games at a time with never a mention.

I actually monitor the weekly 2 deep to see who is where.  This staff can't even publish a legitimate one. It can't be that hard.  A few examples from this year.  They have listed 2 guys as #2's on the DL who by all accounts haven't played yet. For the St Joe game our punter was not listed as #1 or #2 and finally one of our starting OG's was hurt and not dressed but was proudly listed as starting.

If we can't even do this I guess it should not be too surprising the product on the field.

Mercer won again last night.  That is 2 victories in 2 games which compares to our 2 victories in 36 with Carlson.  They will be playing their third brand new football team next week and will pick up win #3.

Valpo Football / 2013 Football Schedule
April 02, 2013, 08:52:43 AM
http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/fcs-schedules/2013-fcs-football-schedules/pioneer-football-league-2013-schedules/

31-Aug   at North Dakota (Aug 29)
7-Sep   at St. Joseph's
14-Sep   William Jewel
21-Sep   Bye
28-Sep   Campbell
5-Oct   at Marist
12-Oct   at Mercer
19-Oct   Morehead State
26-Oct   at Drake
2-Nov   San Diego
9-Nov   at Butler
16-Nov   Dayton
23-Nov   Bye

We should have beaten St Joe (D2) last year, William Jewell (D2) was 2-9 last season and we have beaten Campbell twice in a row.  Could we start 3-1?

Butler is playing 12 games this season, are we headed that way?

Other Sports / Weird Tennis Question
February 18, 2013, 02:16:40 PM
Why do we show the women's tennis score vs Marquette as a 0-7 loss when the recap shows we lost 0-9.

This weekend Northern Illinois played U Indy and won according to their website 7-0 while U Indy's website says it was 0-9.

Is this a D1 thing where they only score 5-2 instead of 6-3?

Valpo Basketball / Paging Laura Richards....
November 28, 2012, 07:52:11 AM
Laura Richards, who probably played more minutes in a season than any player in Valpo history last year, has not played in 3 games. I have read nothing to explain want the problem is.

I was at the Butler game and she was there though in street clothes.

On The Horizon / The silence is deafening
July 10, 2012, 07:26:16 AM
The fact that the HL has announced nothing to date is disappointing.  With all of the conference changes happening you would have thought a plan would have been in place.  Everyone knew that Butler could leave at any time.

I was looking on Racer nation to see if Murray State fans were discussing a possible HL move but I did not locate one thread.

The Robert Morris board mentioned it but it quickly died out after a handful of posts.

Is anyone beyond Oakland interested?

Valpo Basketball / Greg Tonagel - Women's Coach?
March 16, 2012, 09:14:35 AM
Greg Tonagel has been a very successful NAIA coach at Indiana Wesleyan for the past seven seasons.  I wonder if he would be interested in switching to the women's game.

Steve Brooks, the women's coach at IWU, has an unbelievable record over 13 seasons including an NAIA Championship.  He has been coaching for 25 years so he may not be the perfect candidate. His primary recruiting is in Indiana.

Other Sports / Women's Tennis
February 26, 2012, 10:12:05 AM
It is early in the season but the women's tennis team is 3-3. Doesn't seem like that great of an accomplishment until you consider in the past 4 seasons they were a combined 5-81. They are playing a bunch of freshmen....even if they do not win another match, it is the best season in at least 5 years.

Other Sports / Media Guides
November 04, 2011, 07:33:48 AM
Why does our athletic website have a section for media guides if they are not updated? All the fall sports are still 2010 versions. If we are not planning on having these (though every D1 school seems too) then pull them.
