Valpo Basketball / Re: Transfers 2022/2023

I get the kids want the big payday.  If they are not projected as a first round pick they should stay in school.

I believe the last couple years, about 15-20% of players that entered the transfer portal, did not get picked up by another school. That hasn't been the case for Valpo players. More the case with lower mid-Majors.
That is because Lottich can can't recruit but and can't coach.

I fixed it for you. If Lottich could recruit he probably would have had a better record and may not have been fired.
Not necessarily..... you can be a good recruiter and a bad leader.    To recruit he just needed to be a good salesman.   That is why the good players would leave the program.    He got them to VU but then realized they need to get out of the program.

My guy says Ed Schilling is going to get the job.

I hope it's Jake Diebler, but I can't get a sense of who is in or out right now. The people who are in the know are aren't talking.
My knowledge is based on history.  Based on past history Schillings run with Wright state is not impressive.   At least Tonagel has a winning program.   For those of you who say it's NAIA Homer came from Bethel an NAIA school.

Not interested in any Valpo alums or past coaches/assistants with all do respect to Tonagel, Powell, Diebler, Nuness, or any of the rest.  Valpo is in desperate need of a fresh start.  A new perspective and above all new leadership as the press release called it is in order.  A break from the past legitimizes Valpo as a serious basketball program.

Thank you Gore, Bowen, Drews, Powell, Tonagel, Diebler, etc.  Its time for a new era of Valpo basketball to begin.  We have tried to hang on to the past for far too long.
Tonagel runs a good program.   Scholar athletes and a winning program.   VU bringing in Tonagel would be like Baylor bringing in Scott.   Time will tell but Tonagel recently lost in the 2nd round of the NAIA tournament.    Maybe related, maybe not.

https://www.uppermichiganssource.com/2023/03/02/finlandia-university-end-operations-not-enroll-students-2023-2024-academic-year/?outputType=amp

Announced three weeks ago but haven't seen a post here. Finlandia is/was a private lutheran university in the UP of Michigan that is now closing. Looks like they recently held a transfer fair... Valpo was not one of the 25 schools there although no "peer" schools were either. Ideally I'd hope we pursue getting/buying admissions data since it's a lutheran school in the Midwest.

Unless there's some justifiable backstory, this should be regarded as a genuine, lost opportunity. And while the buzzards circling imagery of schools looking to pick up students about to be orphaned by their school may appear unseemly, in VU's case it's an appropriate outreach to invite students who opted for another Lutheran college to apply for transfer. Am I missing something here?????
Some might argue, but Valpo is lightly referred to as Lutheran these days.   They don't follow much Lutheran doctrine.   They have a catholic president.  Any church service is geared to the masses.  I would say they are more of a Christian School.    A true Lutheran school is Concordia.

Valpo was always content....  Sure, They made a leap up in conferences twice.   Looking back they probably should not have done that if they were not going to put the money into it.  They were always happy with the small school, small city in the NCAA tournament and being one and done.   One time they happened to catch lightning in a bottle.   Look at a school like Gonzaga who made a name for themselves and continued to improve the team.   They are also content with the VU name.  But I don't think Valparaiso University's name is a sign of excellence anymore.  I think their accredited business school has dropped off peoples radar.  It's all about Kelly now.   Even the education school is cutting back.   I heard a rumor they might do away with the elementary education major.   They have just become another university.

How about this.   Southern Indiana University, the largest high school in indiana, joined division I this year in the OVC.   They finished .500 and played in the CBI.   GO VU Leachers!

If Valpo wasn't going to invest in the proper coach and facilities they should have never joined the Valley.

VU needs to get into high end alumni's deep pockets. Maybe they need to hire a high end fundraiser.   Get funding for a Redenbacher School of Business.    The Homer Drew School of Education.   If the Brandt family can't donate to remodel the dorm than find an alumni who will and rename it.

The idea that this painting is somehow the soul of Valpo is ridiculous. Very few people even knew it existed!

President Padilla is facing the hard task of cleaning up the financial mess of Heckler. And that means making hard decisions. Don't want Valpo to sell the painting? Then help recruit students to VU. Or start donating millions of dollars.
I will no longer donate or return to the university based on the name change.  I am sure the name change is minor to some people but I avoid the woke world.   I steered both my kids aways from VU because of what VU has become.  I can't believe I still follow VU basketball.  For some reason I can't pull away from it.   I think the name change created a PR nightmare.   It will take at least 10 years to recover from that.    The painting is a small part of the issue.   If VU needs to sell a painting to fund a remodel then there are bigger financial issues going on.   If they feel a remodeled dorm will increase admissions then by all means sell the paintings to get more students to the university.   I have been to many college campus visits with my kids and VU does lag behind in what they offer students.   I graduated from VU from the business School.  I don't think the VU business school is attractive as it was in the 80's/90's.   Again, other schools offer more attractive facilities and learning labs than VU business school.   More is needed than just a remodeled dorm.

Homer and Bryce will show up for reunions and put on a good face publicly about how great is Valpo, but privately you know they're talking amongst themselves about how big of a dumpster fire VU has become.
Don't you think VU hired Lottich because the Drew's said he was best for the job.

This letter sounds like once Bryce is done this season he will come back to Valpo.   They are waiting for Bryce to be done with his season.   Once that happens Lottich will be replaced by Bryce.

Assuming this is sarcasm: yeah, right. [emoji849]

No way will Bryce, Scott or even the patriarch, Homer, ever come back to this dumpster fire. They invested so much. They pleaded for investment. They excelled despite lip service and unfulfilled promises. A million dollars invested in the program tomorrow, Monday 3/13, won't even get an eyebrow raise from them. VU burned that bridge.
That's the only explanation I can come up with.   What program in their right mind would keep Lottich.   I am sure Lottich is surprised he is still around.   He should be embarrassed.

Trinity Trolls.... I could get behind that name and mascot.   They are even christian with the name trolls.  Love to see Christians not afraid of their school name.

The problem is they let students get involved with these decisions.  They don't think of the ramifications of these decisions.   From all the conversations I have had with alumni I graduated with none of them like the name change.   My father-in-law graduated in 1967.   Him and his friends were against it as well.   I would love to see the results of the survey of the name change.   I would bet it didn't support the change.  VU should have consult with a marketing consulting group about this.   I can't imagine a professional consultant suggesting this.

I have never posted here.  Mainly just read basketball information.  Both my wife and I graduated from VU in 93.    Both my kids were accepted into VU.    One went to Purdue and the other went to IU.   Don't get me wrong.   I loved my time and VU and go back often.    However, after visiting my kids I can see why they wanted to go to IU and Purdue.    In terms of campus and surrounding towns those two schools have so much more to offer.
