Besides the outcome of the game itself, I am very interested in the student and overall attendance. First really good home game and school is in session. I don't expect the ARC or student section to be packed, but attendance tonight could be a first checkpoint at progress on developing new/renewed interest.

valpopal - An organization looking to hold itself to the "highest standards of ethical behavior" is a worthy vision. The problem in universities (and some other types of organizations) is that when a hard business decision needs to be made the stakeholders who disagree with the decision just run and point to that statement and say "you're not being consistent with that statement." I do think that Valpo is an ethnical organization...I just recognize that there are hard business-oriented decisions that must be made and that there are many other stakeholders besides those who place nearly infinite value in art that is not associated with the university mission.

valpopal - While that is not a realistic scenario, we can agree that selling paintings to someone who would destroy them would be unethical.

The problem with statements like "highest standard of ethical behavior" and "maintain a high level of public trust" is that those phrases have wildly differing definitions across the range of stakeholders. Indeed, people who feel wronged choose aspirational, but fairly ambiguous, statements like these to justify their cause. One could make darn near any argument and use those phrases as justification.

Your arguments regarding ethical behavior don't hold a lot of water when you bring in the perspective of donors. What you are effectively arguing is that donors should donate more money for capital projects because the university should not sell the paintings or should sell the paintings at a lower price to someone whom the art community approves. Since the amount of money needed is the same regardless, the net effect would be (since the art can be sold) that the donors for capital projects (i.e., dorms) are expected to fund the art.

valpopal - I think you are confusing ethical behavior with a perspective that all stakeholders must be satisfied/happy for an action to be ethical. Valpo is doing something that you, some others in the university, and a group of art associations (the latter of whom should have no consideration in decisions made by Valpo) disagree with. That does not make it unethical. Further, I ,as an alum and donor, would argue that not applying resources that are clearly not within the mission of the university to advance the mission of the university is unethical.

valpopal - With all due respect, your compromise plan would reduce revenues from the art by millions - which is not acceptable for the university. In some cases, a compromise makes no sense and this is one of them.

crusader05 - While I agree with your points about waiting for the right time to get the right price for the art, I do not believe that Valpo should be evaluating buyers by who is the most ethical. If someone offers a million dollars more than other prospective buyers or the estimated market price and they want to hang it in their house where almost no one can see it, that is not Valpo's problem. Valpo's mission does not include preserving or maintaining societal value for art.

crusader05 - On a broad scale, I think you are correct - but there is another option. You can prioritize players who are also relationship oriented...meaning that you can manage the team towards a longer term vision (a few years rather than one year). This is one of the reasons that I am so optimistic about Coach Powell - he seems to really emphasize relationships within the team.

Yeah, I meant 49  :-[. And thanks for adding 2. Forgot that one.

Historyman...you are living up to your name with that stream of consciousness. The scary thing (for me) is that I followed it.

A step in the right direction regarding progress. I enjoy watching a team grow and improve, which will happen this season. I'm not a believer in moral victories, but steady progress, something not happening with Coach Prime at Colorado,  is a beautiful thing.

A vision of what is possible with the path that Coach Powell has started...

Shannon and Hawkins have some potential of playing in the NBA, so they will be very difficult for Valpo's young players to defend. Domask and Goode can shoot the three. Biggest weakness for Illinois is that they do not have a point guard, so pressuring the ball could reduce Illinois' offensive effectiveness. Biggest worry for Valpo is Illinois' defense....Marquette struggled at times to score against them and had seven shots blocked (and Marquette is one of the very best offensive efficiency teams in the country).

Yea...about that. I don't see any way we don't lose by 40. We might (hopefully) improve a lot this season, but we are starting from a LOW point based on these last two games. I see something along the lines of 96-42.

Saw Illinois tonight. They are not really together on offense (no developed point guard), but they are long, athletic and can play good defense. For where Valpo is right now, it will be tough to score 60.

Just looked at the box score: Shots comparison. ND 33 (11 on net).  VU 1 ( 0 on net).  Nikki must still be shell shocked. I didn't see the game, but I'll bet Valpo played a very compact D and had few counter opportunities.

Yes, it is likely that Valpo "parked the bus" against Notre Dame.

Going down to ND 2-0 is a great reflection on our WSO program. The recruiting carrot is huge.

Congrats to the women of our soccer team. The future is bright.

Scoreless tie at the half and losing 2-0 against the #3 team in the country is very impressive. Valpo's women's team belonged there and held their own. From the box score, my guess is that Valpos goalie (Coryell) was amazing.

Great season for the ladies team!

I like Valpo to cover the spread and I like the over. My suspicion is that Valpo can score, but that the team defense needs to make progress.

I also like the over a 3s. Well under 3200 on attendance - Friday nights are tough nights to get attendance unless you are playing a really good opponent.

"The Jaguars played Spaulding University Eagles (Downtown Louisville, 1500 students) at the IUPUI home arena (Indiana Farmers Coliseum) for their regular season opener on Monday night..."

Did not know that Judge Schmales grandson had a university named after him.

Also, does this mean that you cannot major in engineering, computer science or other tech fields and play sports for IU-Indianapolis?

Watched the first half after I got back last night. Clearly an inferior opponent relative to any D1 team and, especially teams in the MVC. However, it was very encouraging to see multiple players who seem like they can score the ball. Continue to develop the system and this should get better. Defense seems to be a work in progress...but we'll know far more on that front after playing some D1 opponents.

Prediction: Valpo by 26 in Roger Powell's opener.

What kind of services does GCE provide as a public company?

From Grand Canyon Education's website:

GCE is a shared services partner dedicated to serving colleges and universities. GCE's leadership team has been leading educational transformation since 1983, and supports partner institutions' students through operational functions that achieve organizational growth and student success. GCE can design programs that serve your diverse student body on campus or online at the undergraduate, master and doctoral program levels.

These functions support the complete student life cycle including strategic enrollment management, academic counseling, financial services, learning management system support, technical support, student information system support, compliance, marketing, human resources, classroom operations, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and training, among others.

-Of course, GCE sells any and all of these services to GCU at whatever price GCE decides. Thus, GCU effectively acts as a shell company to hide costs and artificially inflate GCE's margins.

--------------------
One of the big things that GCE tries to sell to other universities is developing, managing, and operating online education systems for other universities. As noted in posts several years ago, Valpo signed an LOU with GCE (which, by definition, is non-binding - but GCE promoted nonetheless). Numerous people (myself included) pushed back on this with the university - arguing that working with a third party to provide online education might be a good idea for Valpo (in certain programs), but that Valpo should not work with a fraudulent entity like Grand Canyon (instead, work with any number of other qualified companies). To my knowledge, any relationship with Valpo and Grand Canyon has not moved forward.

Any international student should fear coming to the US right now, not just Indiana.  So many Americans have such a generalized view of where people come from, if they don't look like them.  It wouldn't surprise me if this assailant thinks that people from India and Palestine/Gaza are of the same culture, just given general American ignorance on other cultures.

I'm picking your post out, but I could just as easily have selected any other post in this thread to take issue with. Where did you get the idea that this was a racially or ethnically motivated attack? The local story I read indicated that the attacker had a history of mental problems, and the victim was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you guys have the receipts, produce them. If not, I'll look forward to reading your retractions.

I have no idea that this was a racially or ethnically related attack, nor do I know the assailant's ideology. All I was saying is that people in India, including those who would be considering attending Valpo's program (as well as their families), may interpret this as a racially or ethnically motivated attack or may interpret this as "no place in the US is safe" - which hurts the university. The point here is that, besides being awful and something for which the assailant should be prosecutedto the fullest extend of the law, it creates a marketing challenge for Valpo to attract students from India (and elsewhere).

So, I guess that there is another postseason tournament coming. I really don't see why these postseason tournaments are interested in teams that finished 12th in the Big Ten, SEC, etc. Its not like their fans are going to say, we finished 13-18 overall and 7-11 in conference...but now I am excited about the team being in the ______  tournament in Las Vegas.

A few points here:
-First, there is a distinct difference between PhD programs and doctorate programs that do not involve a PhD. One big difference is that PhD students do not pay tuition and receive a modest stipend intended to cover living expenses while completing their PhD. Most doctorate students pay tuition and do not have stipends. My guess is that Grand Canyon is not only engaging in deceptive pricing, but are also deceiving doctorate students regarding potential job opportunities in some disciplines.
-Second (adding on to some points raised by crusadermoe), the relationship between GCE (the publicly traded stock company) and GCU (the university) is ripe with fraud (think Enron). GCU is required  contractually to buy most services from GCE at whatever price GCE dictates GCU should pay. Thus, GCE's reported financial performance is grossly misleading. Oh...and the President of Grand Canyon University is Brian Mueller. Who is the CEO of Grand Canyon Education? you guessed it...Brian Mueller.

This is terrible and your comments on the generalized view of the US by potential international students (especially those that are non-White) are valid. But we do not know the assailant's motive or ideology, so we should refrain from tying this to any specific ideological group in the US. We can say that this person was seriously disturbed and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Most for-profit businesses that engage in deceptive pricing do not exist for very long. Customers choose not to renew with them and potential customers get word of deception.

I am shocked....shocked... that an entity like Grand Canyon, whose principles like Brian Mueller engaged in fraud at Apollo (parent of University of Phoenix) and setup GCE and GCU in a model similar to Enron, has been cited for fraud.
