What?

Assuming it's about Valpo being ranked 183. Seems bad, but it is about 40 spots higher than where the team finished this past season.

I would also say that finishing 7th in the MVC is 2 spots higher than last season. We were placed above ISUr, UE & SIU.

However, it also suggests Valpo would finish 6th in the Horizon League!

I expect no less than a top-4 finish. This is not a prediction, but a personal expectation. The problem children are gone. We have talent. It's time to step up.

Ok its out and that makes it official!  The reason we have been saving our last scholarship is because we are trying to clone this guy.  :o

Not a top 4/5 finish? Can lottich. Hes had his time, hes got his players. The MVC is a step up from the HL, but not THAT far ahead where we are finishing near the bottom for several years. Hes had his chances.

That said, I think he gets it done this year. I think Valpo has a great season (although that 5 spot is scary).

I think firing a coach based on a predetermined finishing spot isn't the right way to go about it. If progress isn't shown, then yes, go ahead and get rid of him, but I think attention should be paid to the program as a whole, taking into consideration injuries or other things that might be beyond the coach's control.

On paper, Valpo should be a better team, but it's hard to predict chemistry considering UNI, Loyola, Missouri State, Indiana State and Bradley return more of their rosters from a year ago.

Our Valpo team may have finished tops of the HL before going to the MVC but the team Valpo had the last two years after the departure of Alec Peters was a mid level HL team.

I agree relative to the results, but the causes were much more than just Alec graduating.  First, Alec never made it to the end of his final year due to injury.  Next, Jabril didn't make it more than a few games of his final year due to academic issues.  The next year we lost a 4 star due to academic issues and Tevonn goes down with illness. Most recently we lost our best shooter to injury and we were short handed to begin with due to two redshirts and and Micah's season ending injury. That left 10 scholarship players to start the season.  Half way through we couldn't even practice 5 on 5.

That's a lot of excuses, I know.  Nonetheless, I maintain that if we had a full complement of the players recruited, we would have finished in the top half of the last two seasons.

Agreed, progress has to be demonstrated at levels we as fans can see and others that are more core to the day-to-day which ML will have to judge.  A concern is that even if we dropped $400,000 on a coach in the near term, is that going to get us a program changing coach?  Are we a destination for coaches?  I think Valpo is currently in that zone where only new first year HC with great energy are willing to take a try.  If you look at some conference mates, they are also getting professionals who have proven records in other walks of life (playing) but are maybe first time HC themselves.

Don't know....but 2 of the last 3 coaches at Valpo have gone to P5 big contract jobs.  Could have been 3 of the last 4 coaches.  That shows that winning at Valpo can position you into a good high paying job.

That stat is a little misleading when the coaches all had the same last name.

oklahomamick

Maybe but pretty sure they were hired for the success and job they did rather than the last name.

I think it means they grew up in a family that had very qualified mentors and great work ethics the same as a lot of the good coaches around the country. Are you saying it's misleading because they chose Valpo because of the last name of the coach/mentor that went before them? I think that is true for many coaches around the country and who knows which coaches would have chosen Valpo if the Drews had not chosen Valpo.

and if we don't....?

For me personally, I'll be disappointed.  ;)

For Matt, it will probably depend on a couple of factors - how much improvement we make (5th is a lot different than 8th) and to a lesser extent injuries to key players along the way (as others have mentioned).
