As a kid, I loved keeping a scorebook at the games I went to...and I started keeping track of the star, Jim Ford, and his progress up the all-time ranks at that time. Later on I kept diligent track of my friend Jeanette Gray as she "Bolened" the women's book.
So I thought it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to our favorite players as they crusade up the all-time charts.
Tonight, as of the Bethune-Cookman game:
--Ryan Broekhoff has passed the great Jim Ford for rebounds and now sits 11th all time with 644, just 3 behind the immortal Harry Bell and the top 10. It is plausible that Ryan could end his career 3rd all-time, behind the underappreciated Chris Ensminger and all-timer Raitis Grafs.
--As for points, he's just 6 shy of hair-timer Urule Igbavboa and the top 20. It's easy to see him ending up 6th, just ahead of seminal figure Bruce Lindner but behind Grafs and the Top 5--although, after tonight's 30 points on 11 shots, anyone care to bet against him going higher?
--In 3-pointers, in the first 5 games he shot (pun intended) from 7th to 3rd! He now has 182. He could pass the criminally-underrated Lubos Barton (244) for 2nd by averaging 2 per game the rest of the season, but he will never catch his coach.
--He's moved into 7th in blocks; notched his 101st steal tonight (might crack top 10). Could make top 20 for assists.
--On the heels of his 11 for 11 night from the line, let's take a moment to appreciate: he's 29-30 on the year, or 96.7%, Rob Cavanaugh territory! Last year was his previous best, but he didn't even crack 80% then...
...As for his cohorts, not as much to say, but:
--The indefatigable Erik Buggs is 2 behind Mr. Cavanaugh for 9th on the assist list; he very well could end up 4th all time. I mean, it's early to assume he'll play all the games to get there, but would anyone care to imagine something keeping that man out of a game? Thus,
--It would only be fitting, but if we play a couple postseason games, Erik will hit the previously unfathomable number of 140 games, 7 more than current record-holder Howard Little. For the record, he's 2 games played ahead of Ryan.
--On the subject of improved fundamentals, he has gone from 43% FT freshman to 33% soph to 52% junior to 75% FT (12-16) so far! Way to be. And he should get credit for one of those misses, since if he doesn't, we lose that game.
--Matt Kenney has passed Fort-Wayne's-Finest, Ron Howard, for 17th on the all-time assist mark. He has an outside shot pass at knocking the immortal Tracy Gipson and still-out-of-eligibility-unfortunately Brandon MacPherson out of the top ten (!). He's 7 GP behind Buggs (5 behind Ryan).
(Any help and thoughts would be appreciated on this!)
I don't think Lubos is underrated at all. He was a plain stud for us in many ways! My favorite player, right up there with Raitis. If Lubos didn't get hurt during the NBA camp with Cleveland, he would have made a roster. He has been a stud in the top European leagues, and has been the best player on the Czech national team since college, even above Jiri Welsch who was playing in the NBA several years ago.
tex, that's your takeaway from everything above? :/
look, i don't want to hijack my own thread, but i feel he's always forgotten about when people talk about the greats. Like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar--an amazing player, but when was the last time you heard him put forth as a candidate for the Best Ever?
I think Lubos is underrated because people always expected more from him--it was an awkward era for the team in the shadow of '98, and sometimes awkward for him in the shadow of Grafs or Stovall at times, even. Etc., etc.
But back to the all-time greats! Not all-time grates.
Love the post, looking forward to updates after each game!
Buggs is shooting free throws real well and looks comfortable doing it. I'd much rather see him toe the line then Kenney or Vashil or Capo

Since I like seeing where current players are record-wise versus past players, I didn't feel I needed to comment on anything in that area since it was already listed. I am glad someone is keeping up with some of these stats as the season progresses, but still felt the need to mention that there is at least one person who thought Lubos was a great player for us against any past player :)
Like valpotx, Lubos was the first player with a name at Valpo that I really got attached to. I didn't get to see Bryce play, so I didn't get to see one of the greats, but I saw Lubos, who is up there, or at least the shooting guard on the 2nd team, as one of the Greatest Valparaiso Crusaders of All-Time.
Thanks for the good info. Lubos gave the program a much needed lift, especially after most of the '98 team graduated. He was a team player, not necessarily looking for his shot or points.
I will always remember the night of the draft just after Lubos graduated that Quinn Snyder, then coach at Mizzou, was one of the commentators. He was asked which player he was most surprised by his not getting drafted and he instantly said Lubos Barton of Valparaiso.

And I think that's part of why he is underrated. He played that European style (i.e. not seeking to be on SportsCenter) and many people--myself included--wanted to give him the Vince Vaughn peptalk from Swingers--the one about the bunny and you've got the claws... Not a "fill-the-stat-sheet" guy, though he accumulated quite a few before he was done, but a subtler style...more ninja when people wanted a BEAR with BIG CLAWS to just TEAR THE BUNNY APART. He
could, but it wasn't his style, any more than being Vince Vaughn was Jon Favreau's style.
Lubos BEARTON. (warning: I counted at least 7 f-bombs in the embedded: )

Here's the tie in with Valpo football. In the movie "Rudy" Vince Vaughn played ND 3rd string-prep squad quarterback Jamie O'Hara.
And both suck!

Thought this link may be helpful when referencing records. Since we were throwing out talk of Rowdy's first half against BCU, it does look like BWood holds the D-1 record of 39 against Georgia Southern.

Along with those mentioned, it seems like there a number of other categories where we have at least a half-reasonable chance of capping off career-marks this year.
Broekhoff has a shot at top-20 assists, top-10 steals, top-10 for 3P%, maybe top-10 FT's, maybe top-10 FT% (you don't have to crack 80%, in fact - Gipson's 10th at 78.8%).
Kenney's got a shot at top-10 steals, and, would you believe, top-10 blocks?
Buggs has a fair shot at top-10 steals.
Van Wijk actually has a chance at top-10 FT's made, in only three years.
It's very early, of course, but it's not too hard to imagine Ferandez in the top-10 list for blocks.
Oh, and if he stopped today, Will Bogan would finish 7th on the career 3PT% chart - at 41.4%. He has to keep making them, of course.
This was always a feature I loved in the game notes. Is it absent entirely this year?
If Antti can be 6th in blocks with his limited minutes over his career (around 10/game), I am sure Vashil will finish much higher up. The blocks category seems like the most wide open, as we have only had really 3-4 prolific shot blockers to play long enough to get a decent amount. I doubt Raitis' number will ever be touched, but second and third are up for grabs if we get someone good at positioning and timing.

Saw Lubos play against UNC-Charlotte some years ago at Charlotte. We came back from a half time deficit to WIN the game. Ratis was terrific,Lubos,so so. I always thought Lubos was over rated, but he was the " beast from the least" (Mid-Con.) When Lubos faced good competition he all but disappeared (Prince of KY., in the first round of the NCAA's,completely shut Lubos down). Hell, IMO,Lubos would never have made it in the NBA. Never!
Ah! Sorry, clearly working too fast.

At his current rate of 16.7 ppg he could score another 300 points, leaving him #6 all-time, ahead of Bruce Lindner but behind Raitis. 2 more postseason games at average would move him ahead of Raitis into #5, but only a ridiculous post-season run (3 post-conference tourney wins) on both his and the team's part would boost him past Lubos. Five more would put him in front of the legendary Harry Bell, which is about as good as he could hope for.

At his current rate of 3.1 apg, Matt could end up with 55 more assists, leaving him tied with Rob Cavanaugh for #9 all-time. It would be extremely difficult to pass anyone else (Jamie Sykes is 30 ahead of that), but in the post-Dority era, he is averaging 3.4 apg (4.0 last 4).
At his current rate of 1.64 apg, Ryan could end up with 30 more assists, leaving him #20 with 224 and knocking Mike Jones out of the top 20. 8 more would leave him solidly 18th. I really like this tread, thanks for keeping it going!
Nice update! Thanks for doing it.
I didn't check all of the others on the watch list (RB for top-10 FT's, rather than "just" FT%, Kenney and Buggs for steals, Kenney for blocks, KVW for top-10 FT's). But, I do notice that RB's ahead of Bogan for 3PT%. 199/490 = 40.6%. Hitting the next would plausibly tie him with BMac. Hitting two in a row would move him into 10th on his own.
Thanks for the kind words, brothers. And thanks for catching that on Rowdy. I'll have to add him to that watch list--EXCEPT that what you have listed are pre-MSU stats, SO:
--Ryan is now 202/496, or 40.7%, or more or less tied with B-Mac for 10th place all-time! HUZZAH!
I checked the other things of which you speak, but, barring several statistical anomalies,
--RB will end up about 30 shy of the top 10 in FTs.
--actually, KVW, who I had thought unable to reach in FTs: if he continues going to the line at his current rate (and making them at this season's higher rate), could end up with 328 FTs, or tied for 7. (Cut-off is 324 FTs!)
--Kenney is not a threat in blocks; although he had a great year last year he has only two this season, giving him 49. Even at last year's rate for the rest of the season he wouldn't get there. Although--he is playing more minutes...
--Nor is he a threat in steals (he's behind Rowdy in both total and rate, and Rowdy isn't going to make the top 10 at his current rate)
--Buggs, though, has 119 and at his current rate could grab another 22, leaving him with 141 and just ahead of Tracey Gipson for #10 all-time! I'll have to add him to the watch list too.
Thanks for catching those!
I should also have noted that these projections are based on only 18 games: Conf + bracketbuster + the one postseason game we're guaranteed, so that you need not worry that I'm guessing we play 20-odd more games. Of course, it also assumes no injuries.
It should also be noted that playing these 18 more games for everyone involved will leave:
--Kenney tied for fourth with 129
--Ryan in third with 132 (sitting out P-Cal cost him Howard Little's 133, but another postseason game or four should take care of that), and
--Buggs, with 136, takes the Greg Tonagel Tenure Award and the top spot.

Let me add a couple of "Macro" record book items...
Since inception, VU has played 2,373 games. Through the Loyola debacle, we have scored a total of 149,944 points. So we are 56 shy of the 150,000 mark. In those games, our opponents have scored 148,222 we have outscored our opponents by 1,722 points, an average of .7257 points per game. If you really care about this stuff, we have an overall record of 1227 - 1146, 51.7%
Since turning to D-1 in 1977, we are 525-529... which shows you just how horrible things were in the 80's. In those games our opponents have outscored us by a total of 288 points (73,783 to 73,495). Nit Pickers: Yes, I have the Purdue forfeit in here as if it were a "real game". ok, back to your regularly scheduled RB update.
Those are definitely very cool stats. Nice to know that we will have our first chance to go above 0.500 in D-1 this year all-time, unless we were above 0.500 sometime soon after moving divisions.
I hope that we reach 150,000 in the midst of a victorious evening tomorrow.
Thanks for the stats!

Quote from: humbleopinion on January 03, 2013, 06:22:45 PMI hope that we reach 150,000 in the midst of a victorious evening tomorrow. Thanks for the stats!
It kind of struck me as being funny that any program would have the public address announcer announce that their program had scored a certain amount of points, during a game. The fact that Ryan Broekhoff scored the 150,000 point in the history of Valpo basketball was kind of cool. I wonder how many fans will remember who scored the 150,000th point when the 200,000th point in the history of Valpo basketball is scored several years from now.
OK... one footnote, asterisk, the 150,000 includes the actual final score of the 1994-5 Purdue game that they wound up forfeiting due to using an ineligible player. Talking to the ESPN stat's guy, he said that "most" of the time, a forfeit will only be reflected in the W-L record of the team, and that all individual stats (player points, rebounds, etc) are retained.
OH, Trust Me. That would NOT have been announced if it we weren't up by 23 points late in the game. I have a direct "no distraction" rule I have to follow. Notice no HL scores are announced when the team is on the floor. Scores are only given during halftime and pre-game. Player stats are only given when it is obvious they are coming out of the game for the last time. If a player hits the 1,000 point mark, I have to get permission to go with it in advance... again, unless its a blowout in our favor.
I thought it was a great fun - and thanks for the sneak preview here!

I will remember the play: Ryan got that 150,000th point putting back the layup missed by Matt when he got hit hard in the ribs and no foul was called. Matt was lying on the floor under the basket then doubled over on his way up court yelling at the official while everyone was cheering the milestone, and Bryce grabbed Matt pulling him away from the direction of the official toward the bench. Matt was in pain the rest of the game.
In fact, the trainer's room will be busy today with players getting attention: Matt for his ribs, Erik for the ankle he twisted stepping on his own player's foot, Jordan for the arm he fell on when he was hit hard and slammed the court, Ben for his turf toe, and others for assorted bumps and bruises. Welcome to the physical play of the Horizon League!
OK a number of you have asked...(and lot more of you did not)...but here goes.
I don't have the play-by-play to pinpoint the player... but if someone has the old record books and cares enough to go through it...
The 100,000th point was scored November 24, 1990 in Boise Idaho in game 2 of their tournament against Eastern Washington. We lost the game 77-66, but the 100,000 point was the 45th point scored in that game.
The 50,000th point was scored February 6, 1965 in Hilltop Gym in an 80-74 win over Butler. the 44th point in that game would be #50,000.
Point #1 was scored in 1917, against Chicago "sometime before December 14th, when the second game was played". We lost our opener 45-20.
And the answer to the question of whether we have ever been above .500 since turning to D-1 in 1977:... no. We started that year with 5 straight losses to (home) Western Michigan, @Illinois State, @Notre Dame, @Northwestern and @ Missouri. We then won the Crusader Classic, and our first D-1 win as a D-1 program was against Navy 62-60 in Hilltop on December 29, 1977.
In the first 10 years in D-1 we were a symmetrical 90-180.
Yes, we've come a long way...
My father played football/basketball/baseball at St. Olaf, and has a program from when he played in the Crusader Classic at Hilltop against Valpo and some other schools (I believe Luther College was another). I'll have to find it to see what year it was, but it would have been early 1970s.
I look forward to being over 0.500 for the first time as a D-1 program by end of year!!

Before the Crusader Classic was a bowling tournament it was a basketball tournament between Lutheran schools held in Hilltop Gym every year. Some of the colleges invited were St Olaf, Luther, Carthage(WI), Augustana(SD), Augustana(IL), Wartburg, Wittenberg, Pacific Lutheran, Gustavus Adolphus, Augsburg, etc. In 1977 near the end of the time Valpo hosted the Crusader Classic they played Carthage College and the game went to double OT before the Crusaders pulled it out. The pressure was really on the Crusaders because Valpo had never lost a Crusader Classic basketball game. The final score was 94-87. When Valpo decided to switch to Div.I they ended the Crusader Classic and were undefeated in that tournament.
I actually talked to Mark and Homer about this some time ago. My point was that in Lutheran terms, the Crusader Classic made it clear that there was Valpo, and everybody else. Now, given the fact that we play non-D1 exhibition games, why not replace those games with the CC? In the case of Wagner (the only other Lutheran school playing D1) you pick up a D1 game as well. You now understand how much influence I have! :o
If it had a better RPI impact, we could have a Crusader Classic series with Holy Cross of the Patriot League. It would be a home-at-home competition for the "Best Crusader". The winner of the yearly classic would come home with a Shield of Glory to engrave the win into, have a nice history lesson out of that.
I'd prefer calling that the "(Counter-)Reformation Classic".
BTW, some schools are scrapping the Crusader as a mascot due to PC -- all the death and mayhem associated with the crusades (we won't get into 9/11, OK)
http://www.jihadwatch.org/2004/04/texas-university-scraps-crusader-mascot.html (http://www.jihadwatch.org/2004/04/texas-university-scraps-crusader-mascot.html)

So, the Counter Reformation Classic is getting my vote.
.....and a BBTW, if you are gonna do a faceless mascot, I like this guy (in the attachment, but with a color change) better. However, saying that, and with a nod to the Mascot string, the new Valpo Crusader has a lot pictures out there (as does the previous guy).
That's just sad. Every now and then some VU students get all huffy about the "Crusader".
They could bill it as the "Reformation Classic" when played at VU and call it the "Counter-Reformation Classic" at Holy Cross.
Hey, I remember a few years ago we played the Capital (ELCA) University from Bexley, Ohio... those purple Crusaders... 4 months later, my daughter enrolled there...

I like these stats you are coming up with. Good to see that we have proven a lot of the naysayers incorrect when some thought we would not be able to compete in this league. We have shown from the start that we could go toe-to-toe with anyone in the HL, barring the one season where two key cogs (Bouchie and Haanpaa) left without much notice.
Ryan had a block in the UIC game - it was obvious but missed in the stats....

You have to read that whole paragraph. It is purely an assessment of Raitis by one man. It's also poorly written and extremely subjective.
More than 20 years ago now in kindergarten, a tall boy named Raitis met a smaller one named Kristaps and they became fast friends.[citation needed] Since then, the two (Raitis Grafs and Kristaps Valters) have grown to be best friends and teammates on the Latvia national basketball team. As a teenager, Grafs was regarded as one of the best prospects in Europe averaging 13.8 points and 10.5 rebounds at the 1998 U18 European Championship. He posted similar numbers (11.9 ppg and11.0 rpg) at the 1999 World Junior Championship during which he was voted a First Team All-Star. At 16 years 5 months, Grafs became the youngest Latvian National Team member. Unfortunately, during four years at Valparaiso University (NCAA), Grafs did not improve his skills much and so far his first three seasons after returning to Europe have been less than impressive. This year, as he returned to his hometown club ASK Riga, he performed well (10.1 ppg and 5.6 rpg in Baltic league). Grafs is not athletic enough to become a star but he can be a solid back-up center and give his team a good 10–15 minutes per game. You can rewrite that wikipedia paragraph on Raitis yourself by clicking on the
[edit] button next to the paragraph.
By following the references in the wikipedia article on Grafs I found this picture and the teams he has played for since he left Valpo. For a 31 year old Raitis is looking rather young. I guess he always did look younger than his age.
During his career, Graf played in Riga "Broceni", Valparaiso University (NCAA), Ostende 'Telindus' (Belgium) Wroclaw "Slaski" (Poland), BK "Ventspils" ASK Riga, "Šiauliai" (Lithuania), Riga VEF, "Nitra" (Slovakia) and Limassol "Apollon" (Cyprus).

Just a reminder for those who lost too many brain cells last night...drinking to forget the first half and drinking to celebrate the second half... anyway... a few tidbits
Our D-1 Record: 529 wins and 529 losses. We have never been above 500 since we began as a D-1 Program in 1977... our opponents have still out-scored us, 74,043 to 73,809 (diff: -234)
Before last night, we were holding our opponents to under 60 points per game. We have not done that for a full season since 1948-49! If we can hold Wright State to 46 points or fewer, we will once again be below the 60PPG defense point.
Last night we picked up our 6th Road win of the year. Going back to the opening of the ARC, we have never won more than 9 Road games in a single season, and we did that once.... 97-98 we went 9-3 on the road. We have 5 more road games on the regular season schedule.
Since the ARC opened, we have played 382 (70.2% W) games at home, 383 (36.3% W) games on the road and 107 (57% W) neutral sites.
and perhaps the most fun little statistic... The Wright State game will be our 20th game of the year.... going back to 1984, we are 19-7 in the 20th game of the year, including an astounding 12-3 at home.
see y'all tomorrow... bring a friend!
Awesome, our first chance in 36 years to be above 0.500 as a program! We can then say that we are a winning program overall :)

Back during the 1972-73 season the PA announcer was a guy named Kenneth Korby. He was a bald guy with a thick black mustache. He had a voice like Norman Nagel (the dean of the chapel) but without the Australian accent. He was also part of the theology department at Valpo. Kenneth was pretty straight forward in his PA announcing. When he announced the line-ups and gave the scoring plays and fouls there was no inflection in his voice he just announced everything plainly so everyone could understand him. After all he was a member of Valpo's theology department and that was a serious time for theology in the Lutheran Church.
I remember the game that clinched the conference for Valpo. It was actually a tie for first in the ICC (probably with Evansville) but Valpo had won the bid to the NCAA "college division" tournament by the tie-breaker method. At the end of the game when the conference champion was announced as Valpo, Kenneth Korby started using inflection in his voice and whooping it up. This was a huge deal for Valpo. They announced that John Wolfenberg had won some conference award for points scored or something like that and Kenneth Korby let out the best "JOHN WWWWOOOOLF-ENNNN-BUUUUURG!! I had ever heard up till that time.
Of course now John Bowker is much better at it but remember that was a serious time at Valpo. ;)
I did find kind of a biograhy of Kenneth Korby and some mentions of his writings on the internet:
http://www.ctsfw.edu/document.doc?id=281 (http://www.ctsfw.edu/document.doc?id=281)
A number of individuals could be cited as contributing to this renewed interest in Loehe
and his influence in the LCMS within the last three decades, but none is more significant
or substantial than Kenneth F. Korby (1924-2006). Korby graduated from Concordia
Seminary, St. Louis in 1945 and after pastorates in Minnesota and Oregon, he was called
to the department of theology at Valparaiso University in 1958 where he would serve
until 1980. While at Valparaiso, Korby earned a Masters in Sacred Theology from Yale
and in 1976 he obtained a doctorate from Concordia Seminary in Exile for a thesis
entitled The Theology of Pastoral Care in Wilhelm Loehe With Special Attention to the
Function of the Liturgy and the Laity[10]. In 1980, Korby left Valparaiso to serve as
pastor of Chatham Fields Lutheran Church, an African American parish on the south side
of Chicago. Retiring in 1987 and moving to St. Paul, Minnesota, Korby would serve as
vacancy pastor of Zion Lutheran Church until he completely retired from pastoral
ministry and moved to Port Angeles , Washington in 1997. Until he suffered a
debilitating stroke in 2001,Kenneth Korby died in 2006.

Do you know which basketball alum from the 1972-73 team is which?
My guess is that John Wolfenburg is the furthest on the left and Tom Haeberle is the 4th from the left (2nd from right). Wally Schultz always wore thick black glasses (in the days before contact lenses were common) so I'm guessing Wally is 2nd from the left. I'm just not sure about who the other two are. Is one of them Paul Fredlake?
Thanks so much for the picture!
EDIT: Just found something on the internet that names the whole 1972-73 team:
http://www.fanbase.com/Valparaiso-Crusaders-Mens-Basketball-1972-73 (http://www.fanbase.com/Valparaiso-Crusaders-Mens-Basketball-1972-73)

Thomas Haeberle
Thomas Hoerl
Jeff Holmes
Dale Lesicki
Milt McGee
Tom Mueller
Joel Oberman
Mark Peters
Wally Schultz
John Semmelhack
John Wolfenberg
It should have been pretty easy to pick out John as he is/was about 6'11" None of them look firmiliar to me! ;)
I'm not sure which is which... but the 5 names I read last night:
John Wolfenberg
Thomas Haeberle
Thomas Hoerl
Dale Lesicki
Thomas Mueller
Might ask John Mutka of the post-Trib, he covered that team !! They pre-date my coming to Vu by about 12 months.

I remember Coach Purden never called anyone on that team by their first name because there were 3 Toms and 2 Johns. How interesting that all 3 Toms showed up.
I believe going left to right on the photo they are : John Wolfenberg, Dale Lesicki, Tom Hoerl, Tom Haeberle and Tom Mueller.
Interesting, as my dad remembers playing against some of those guys in the Crusader Classic when he was at St. Olaf. He definitely remembers Wolfenberg apparently
Yes, that was one of the Valpo basketball teams that never lost a Crusader Classic game.

We are approximately two-thirds of the way through the regular season (21 games to go, 10 more games scheduled), and though the way we are playing we are going to play far more than the one post-season game we are promised, it'd be interested to see what we might do on the season all-times. Everything, thus figured for 11 games more:
At his current rate, Rowdy would get 533 points for the year; all-time Vern Curtis (66-67) and B-Wood (9-10) are #10 with 565. He'd still be ahead of his last year self (508).
At his current rate, Rowdy would grab 263 boards for the year; that would tie him with Urule (7-8 model) for 9th all time, but still more than a bit behind his last year self (290).
No one is threatening in assists, but after his amazing night Buggs has gone from not threatening the top 10 list to projecting for 56 steals for the year--which would be tied for 5th with Stalin Ortiz (2-3)...two more would leave him alone in 3rd all time.
No one is threatening in field goals or blocks, but Rowdy's 3-pters are on pace for 84, which would be 6th all-time and ahead of Bryce Drew! (That's freshman Bryce, but not soph, jr, or sr.)
Even after his monster night, Rowdy's on pace for 130 FTs, and #10 is 133. KVW is on for 132.
Guess we'll just have to go deep into it! But who would have thought that (in terms of totals only; aside from percentages) the most exceptional season we're having is Buggy with steals!
Dan Oppland holds the mark for most combined points and rebounds with 2562. Ryan Broekhoff currently has 2188. He has been averaging close to 30 a game of late. If Valpo gets the 14 games that appear likely, then Broekhoff could very well pass Oppland in his last game in a Valpo uniform.

Indeed!
They're at just about the same rate on the season, and might both make it. Of course, a bit of a post-reason run would help, as would picking up the pace slightly. More games like last night would, naturally, let Ryan do it double time (triple time?).
Hopefully LaPorte doesn't mind me tossing in an update. I couldn't handle the suspense!

Wow, it looks like Rowdy will be able to catch Raitis in rebounds and Lubos in 3s. Very impressive!
Can you imagine how long it's going to take on Senior Day to read all of those accomplishments...??? Can't Wait! Tuesday, 2/26... Youngstown would be the last regular season home game...
After this year you will have a 4 year break while we wait for this new big class of incoming freshmen to graduate.
The future. ???
Rowdy: I love this kid. What a great person and what a talented player (Koala, you've got to be proud). It would be nice to leverage Rowdy's experience here into making Valpo THE place for young Aussies to come to develop their international BB skills. I've known a few Aussies through business relationships and they are just like him -- smiles start even before hello. Once he graduates we will miss him deeply. Let's get another one like him! (er... impossible. Maybe kinda similar.)
At the women's game today he took time out and was signing a few autographs and stopped and took a picture with my son. Great player, even better person! Well done koala!
Thank you so much we are very proud of him as he is a wonderful young man and oh so nice. We will all miss Valpo so much as it has been such a fantastic place for him to grow as a person and a player, all credit to him and everyone at Valpo. We arrive soon so we are looking forward to seeing everyone and watching Ryan and the team play live. You will know who we are, we will be the ones with the big smiles ;D

Just for fun, I went to the old ValpoFans message board and looked at threads of discussion about Ryan and Kevin when word first leaked out that they might be coming to Valpo, since they were so unknown compared to local recruits. I wasn't a member then, but I do recognize some of the contributors to the conversations.
The thread of speculation on Kevin began in June 2010 and lasted through the summer with folks finding pictures of him on Facebook and trying to guess about his age (at 21), height, or experience, wondering if he'd really be able to get cleared to play in the US. When he was spotted on campus at the bookstore before being cleared, more speculation about his height and weight occurred. There were some comments wondering if he would be another Benjamin Fumey, Paul Guede, or Beas Hamga. The day Kevin was cleared to play, Paul Oren interviewed Kevin and had a perceptive piece that declared he seemed different from others he'd interviewed: "He could be a starter, he might be a Milosevic or Halvorsen. There was just something about his confidence and sense of being on Wednesday that struck me as a player who is ready to contribute...and a player who is ready to work."
The initial thread of speculation on Ryan was even more interesting, especially since he was so young. When a video surfaced, there was a question about the low release of his shot. When he was seen on campus, he was thought to be smaller and very skinny. Koala got on the board and promised to fatten up her son and strength coach Brooks would build Rowdy's muscles. There was even a poll on the board: "Broekhoff: Will He Be a Stinker or a Stud." For the record, there were 10 votes cast, 7 said he would be a "star," 2 said he'd be "average," and 1 said he would be a "stinker." (Anyone want to confess to that last vote?)
As their senior year winds down, I think we can all agree we've been fortunate to have both of them at Valpo, on and off the court.

Came out blurry, but we didn't want to take up more of his time. I about had to lay on the floor to get them both in the photo.

I certainly was a part of those debates, but then again, I so promise in Chris Halverson! ;)
Through the Feb 5 UIC game, with the starters playing limited minutes, again. It didn't stop Broekhoff from going 6-9 from behind the arc. But, it dead mean that KVW didn't take a shot.
Matt Kenney apparently became only the second crusader, after Lubos Barton, to cross the 400 rebound/300 assist level. I'm not sure we're setup to look for other such milestones.

Buggs at 143 steals. Rowdy at 221 assists. And KVW at 107/172 this season.
I have to admit I liked the flare gun in the crotch thing. I also must admit the picture of the solar? flare went right over my head.

Part of the statistical reasons that this team is so sweet is its efficiency (at shooting, not ball-handling).
KVW is t-13th in the nation at PPWS (points per weighted shot) with 1.34. Rowdy t-19th with 1.32.
Additionally, ranks in the top-100 of the country:
Rowdy
--40th in FT%
--t86th in 3PT%
--t74th in eFG%
(and just outside at t-103rd in RPG and t-104th in Reb Rate)
KVW

--t40th in eFG%
--t56th in pts/40
Bogan
--t15th in FT% (only 15/16, but that's 93.8%!)
Points per game - Defense. We have given up 61.19 ppg. That's the best defense since... 1951-52, when we gave up 58.04 ppg. That was in a year we went 12-12...
We are now 8-5 on the road, guaranteed better than .500 record...'01-02 we ended at 8-5, and '97-98 was last time we won 9 road games.
It's a little late to talk about "best starts". But, are you set up to ask what the most wins we've ever had is, with only six losses?
Is it safe to say that this is our "best start" ever?

How in the world does someone shoot 70.4%? Even KVW is at 63.2%, with the majority being lay-ups lol.
Wayne Charles was Doug Anderson before there was Doug Anderson (maybe literally as well as figuratively! : ). These were all dunks and putbacks.
The interesting thing to me is the asterisk...he didn't have 75 attempts to qualify, but "retains position when given 75 attempts"...does that mean he actually shot BETTER than 70.4, and like in MLB, you're given 0-for-the at-bats you need to qualify for the title?
Quote from: LaPorteAveApostle on February 14, 2013, 10:44:55 AMbut "retains position when given 75 attempts"...does that mean he actually shot BETTER than 70.4, and like in MLB, you're given 0-for-the at-bats you need to qualify for the title?
That's my understanding. That's why I want to see his actual stats!
Anderson's awesome, but he's only shooting in the low 50's. He must actually take a shot from the field now and then.
Wayne Charles never shot anything but a dunk or layup. It seemed like he was 2/2 or 2/3 every game. Anderson gets off a lot more shots, with many of those shots mid-range jumpers.
Quote from: agibson on February 14, 2013, 12:23:07 PMAnderson's awesome, but he's only shooting in the low 50's. He must actually take a shot from the field now and then.
If you have watched any Detroit games you saw that Anderson is constantly missing from "beyond the rim."
He's shot a fair number of threes (25). The problem is he has only made 8.

I'm still not set up to find these, but here's another one from chef:
Todd Ickow @ToddIckow
@RBroekhoff45 needs 16 points today and 1 rebound to join Raitis Grafs as only other player in Valpo history with 1500 pts and 800 rbs.

Ah, was it not something new then? Somehow the way John said it made me think it was something very recently achieved.
Anyhow, apparently, nothing to see here folks!
I believe Matt set that mark 3 weeks ago vs UIC. Speaking of Kenney, I think he's 11th now in asts not 10th. I see him listed behind Dr. Cavanaugh 329 to Matt's 319. Rob started the season 9th, but has been passed by Buggs. Thus Cavanaugh 10th now and Kenney 11th. Could Apostle have made an error? It's a rare occurrence if he did.

NICE pickup!
AND he is just SEVEN points away from 1000 for his career...which is impressive for 3 years' work.
Unless you're Bruce Lindner.
Also, when you're looking at these and projecting, we are guaranteed THREE more games, but a maximum of only NINE more is possible.
I posted the full script on the "Senior Night" page... Chef is right... It was a nice number-combination, but he did hit it a few weeks ago. By the way, if you combine Chef's, Mine and Broekhoff's points and rebounds we are the only group with 1500+ points and 800+ rebounds in VU history.
reminds me of my favorite Stacey King quote, after all he did was contribute a free throw to MJ's career high 69 points dropped on the Cavs:
"I'll always remember this as the night Michael Jordan and I combined to score 70 points."
Interestingly, I thought "how many times could VU have had 3 players in the top 20 in career assists on the same roster?"
well...more than maybe you'd think:
1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89: Todd Smith, Scott Anselm, Mike Jones (although Jones just dropped off because of Rowdy)
2004-05: Ali Berdiel, Jarryd Loyd, Ron Howard
2005-06: Ali Berdiel, Jarryd Loyd, Brandon MacPherson, Ron Howard, Jake Diebler (FIVE!!!)
2012-13: Erik Buggs, Matt Kenney, Ryan Broekhoff
I believe 04-05 was Berdiel's red-shirt year....so does that count? Also, Loyd and Howard were not in the top 20 at that point in their career...so does that count?
Quote from: chef on February 28, 2013, 12:13:40 AMI believe 04-05 was Berdiel's red-shirt year....so does that count? Also, Loyd and Howard were not in the top 20 at that point in their career...so does that count?
Good point--I wanted to say "roster" rather than "team" to make clear it didn't matter whether active or not.
As far as whether they were top-20, that would require going back through each year's media guide, and even I don't have that kind of drive.
Besides, as a kid (early 90s) I remember them only listing a top-10 list for many years. Wonder when they went to 20?
As a side note, check out what Nebraska (sorry to bring them up) does in their media guide for their 1000-point scorers (they have several Regionites in their history) at this link. http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=205718312 (http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=205718312). It's hard to get to, but they have 40 pages of history (161-200)--the 1000 point club is at 171 through 174.
I think we really need to bring out our history more -- we have a great past and these players deserve more than just a line, a date, and a number.

um...i had the GB update here. and then i wrote over it.

ryan broekhoff - first ballot vu hall of famer. no doubt. hands down one of the best all-around players to don the brown and gold.
Hey LaPorte...I know we could find it elsewhere, but since you have everything set up already...and chance you could include the #1 spot in each of these categories...just for perspective?
good point. when i am home from work i will add it.
speaking of #1, scary to think that Doug McDermott of Creighton has more points than Bryce...and he's a junior.
OK, I've got to know.
Horizon League Tournament: Most turnovers? Most in a win?
If we don't set those, most in a championship game?
Turnovers in a Valpo game? In a winning effort?
In thirteen years of stats, 25 Valpo turnovers is the most I see in _any_ game. The only other instance, apart from tonight's win, was a loss against UNC at the United Center, December 20, 2008.
Apart from that, the most I can find is 24 Valpo turnovers. February 4, 2012. In a home win. Over Wright State.
23 earlier this season at New Mexico, of course. In a losing effort.
Not sure if I'll manage any longer back than that for Valpo. Or any history for the Horizon League tournament or championship game. I'd love to know the stats, if someone has access to a better archive.
For what it's worth, we've _forced_ more than 25 (26, 27) but only against non-D1 teams.

QuoteThe Fort Wayne Mad Ants announced today that they have acquired Ron Howard. Howard has spent the 2010-11 season in Australia and has recently been waived. Howard will fill the spot of Carlos English who was waived by the team last week.
Howard, nicknamed "Mr. Mad Ant", is a Fort Wayne fan favorite since he has been with the Ants since their inaugural season. Howard has played in 124 games for the Ants, has recorded a total of 2,018 points, and has averaged 16.3 points per game in his career. He averaged 20.6 points per game and was named to the 2009-2010 NBA D-League All-Star team last season.
This was enjoyable to read LPAA thanks for keeping it up all season. Unfortunately I feel the only thing that could be in trouble is a top 10 FG% for Bobby next season. Maybe LaVonte could put together a top 10 FT% next year too? This is wishful thinking.

Thank you so much. It was fun, and you're right--next year will be a lot less work (sadly).
One more re-cap, wrap-up on the records for this years class...
Nobody can argue about the 26 wins. cool
16 wins at home...
1944-45: Final tally for 1944/45 was 21-3
12-0 home
6-2 away
3-1 neutral ... including wins at the Boston Garden (Holy Cross), Buffalo Coliseum and Madison Square Garden (LIU)
as verified by a combination of the Official Score Book in the Archives, and the books of our opponents....
so the only other years that might upset the applecart on Home wins (16) and Road wins (10) was 1923-24.
Judy Miller in the Archives did some checking:
Hate to burst your bubble. The 1923-24 season - all played after 1/1/24 --
13 home wins
11 road wins (Some may have been neutral Sites... they are still checking some of the books)
Record for '23/'24 = 24 wins, 4 losses
Interesting that all of the games that year were played after 1/1/24. The Old College Main building had just burned down and a lot of campus activities were curtailed. The Gymnasium didn't burn down until 1927, when we started a 12-year run of playing our home games at then-Valpo High School (now Ben Franklin Middle School).
So, one more 'research issue' on Number of Road Wins during a single season, but the record set this year is at least 89-years-old. But the record for Home Wins was set by this year's team.
Very cool that this data is still available in the archives. I bet it was kind of neat to go through that old stuff. ;D
Fun stuff.
But, I still want to know about turnovers!
Have we ever had 25 in a win before? Have we ever had more than 25 in a loss?
Has anyone in the Horizon League?
Is 25 turnovers a record (win or loss) in the HL tournament? Or at least a record for a win?
Do people just not compile turnover stats in the same way they do for points, assists, etc?

Since 1997 25 is our highest turnover amount of turnovers in a win. 30 vs Purdue in 1997 is highest in a loss.

In 2002 we destroyed IUPUI in the conference tourney game, but committed 20 turnovers. That's our next highest mark in a conference tourney game, with 25 being the highest.
Can't go back any further, but I don't think they even played basketball before 1997.
As y'all know, there hasn't been a lot to do on this thread this year, since it's kind of a 'transitional' year between the previous excellence of a great sr. class and the potential excellence of a great fr. class.
Nevertheless! Some things to keep an eye on:
--If Dority scores his average for the rest of the year (assuming only the games we're guaranteed--10 more plus 1 conf tourney) he would end up with 544 points. The 10th best single season mark is 565, most recently by B-Wood. Given he's averaged 20 ppg the last 5, who wants to bet against him?
--Gueye needs just 4 more blocks to move into top-10 country (season). At his current rate, he would end up with 58, and the 3rd best season all time (behind soph & jr Raitis). He'll have to step it up to move into top-10 all time (Jim Stueve with 72), but still, for one season, not bad. Also will win the "Seven Footer Shooting FTs Award", of course given out by Shaq and Dwight Howard at halftime of the NIT quarterfinals on OLN.
--More Dority--at his current rate, 69 3 pointers for the season, which would leave him just shy of top-10 seasons--quietly, I should think! An extra postseason game would get pace him to 71, #10 and tied with sr Jim Ford and jr Casey Schmidt.
--He's on pace to make 151 FTs, which would be the third best season here EVER, behind sr Bruce Lindner and jr Dick Jones.
Fun with numbers:
How good is Gueye? If he didn't take another FT all year, Carter could make his next 20 in a row and still be behind him.
Jubril has one more made FT--and 13 more attempts.
Vashil has 5 fewer FTs--despite 50% more attempts!!!
Here's how many consecutive makes Vashil would have to make just to get to Gueye-level excellence: 125.
(Hell, Rob Cavanaugh couldn't even do that.)
Jordan Coleman: 9 more 3PT attempts than Capo. ...5 fewer makes.

Good guess. But wrong. I'm sorry you wagered so much, but I appreciate your self-confidence.
The correct answer is
"Who were Zoran Viscovic & Ivan Vujic?" in 1998-99.
That was actually the only time Valpo had two players with 40 blocks in a season....that is until today.

I wonder what his brother Mike is Opp to?
anyway, just one little thing... the game on Saturday is the 1100th game since we turned D1 in 1977.... we are at 556-543 for the first 1,099 games...and the point total is equally close 76,844 (69.92ppg) for, and 76,772 (69.86ppg) against... a difference of 72 points.
We are 55 points away from 2,000 for the season... a plateau we have hit every year since 1992-93... Except in 2008-09, when we only managed 1,901.

Logan playing basketball (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB9Zb-RLU80#)
Probably we should have followed him a little longer before we offered... ;)
I thought about bringing up Logan Jones too but at least I managed to restrain the impulse. Like I said a few years back I suspected that we might have been making a mistake with that recruitment when I saw the reaction ??? of a Madison resident to the VU interest in him. I hope Milan doesn't catch wind that we are again talking about his favorite player.
For the record that was the one and only season that I watched more girls games than guys and it wasn't even close.

Noticed that when Jubril grabs one more board, we will have 6 with 100+ rebounds.
Now, on one hand, that doesn't seem like a lot--it's just 3 per game when you play 33, right? I MEAN DEAR GOD YOU CAN JUST STAND THERE AND PROBABLY THE BALL WILL BOUNCE TO YOU THREE TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF FORTY MINUTES RIGHT?
...and yet, it's hard to do:
WSU only has 2 (possible 2 more);
CSU 4 (possible 5th);
Det 4;
GB 4 (probable 5th);
MILW 4;
Oak 3 (likely 4th);
UIC 3;
YSU 4.
And it's not just HL teams either...here are some of this year's opponents.
Murray St 2 (possible 2 more);
Illinois 4 (possible 5th);
Ohio 2 (possible 2 more);
Evansville 3;
UCF 3;
Mercer 3 (possible 4th)
St. Louis 4 (probable 5th)
That's just impressive. Let's put it in team perspective:

1999: 4. 1998: 5.

Toatley was one of my favorite players to watch in my first few years. I never would have guessed that Jason Jenkins had 100+ rebounds in 2 different seasons, as he literally set up a house along the 3-pt line :)
Do you have any figures for how close Moussa is to breaking the record for travels in a season? I swear he has at least one every game.

I would guess that he averages over 1 traveling call per game. Vashil has shown improvement around the basket in taking it to the hoop quicker when he is given a pass in low, but Moussa absolutely needs to be very close to the basket to have a chance at scoring (outside of his random jump shot the other game). He has shown the ability to seal off his defender directly under the hoop, though.

Takeaways...LVD part of the 500-point club. I know that history doesn't work this way, but his two-year stats over four years would leave him #13 on the all time scoring list. I think that's a fair comparison of how good he is, because it's not taking into account the games he missed last year, nor the rest of his games this year. (Anyone who doesn't like him, what's your freakin' problem? do you CARE to imagine how/where we'd be without him? I'll tell you: somewhere between UIC and YSU, that's where.)
Furthermore, I would be willing to bet that of people who have played at least 1000 or 1500 minutes for VU, he's top-10 in points-per-minute played.

Against an NAIA school from Indiana that beat Valpo, I believe in an exhibition game. Was it Grace? Or Bethel? Or Goshen?
Didn't Bryce miss the Stanford game his senior year as well? I recall wanting that rematch with Bryce if we had pulled out the win against Rhode Island.
Also, the talk of the TOs and history reminded me of a game, and I'm not sure if it was Smith's last year as coach or Homer's first, but around that time. We had a game with 40 turnovers. A TO a minute, baby.

At Alabama, he averaged a block every 10.3 minutes. Playing 20.6 minutes for Valpo and playing every game would give him 68 blocks, which would be...let's see -- oh look! -- the top season ever at Valpo. 4-5 more would put him in the top 10 ever. In one season.
How dare they mortgage our future!!!1!
Lubos is the one with 1675, not Raitis. Bryce missed games against Purdue and Bethel. He did then play versus Stanford in Hilo, and was named MVP in the tournament, even though we went 2-1, with a 3-pt loss to Stanford. The Cardinal went to the final four that season with a dramatic last second comeback versus Rhode Island.

He seems to have eliminated last year's (intentional? rhythm building?) shimmy, but against New Mexico it seemed like he was getting some weird motion on the ball, sort of side spin?
It seems like he's definitely been working hard on it, for years! Best of luck to him, certainly.

Well, because he has truly been the definition of "a work in progress". The level of progress has been very predictable even when considering the number of minutes played.
His FG% has increased each year, as has his FT%, rebounds, scoring average, and of course, blocks. More importantly, without Moussa, his need, to be able to stay on the floor, has increased and he has responded accordingly.
We have three guys on track for all conference awards if they can keep playing at this level. Let's all hope so...
Odds n'ends:
vashil: 44 blox
rest of team: 29
At 19 ppg Alec is on pace for 608, or the 5th best season of all time.
10 more points would leave him 3rd -- he would pass sr and jr Bryce.
Alec is also on pace for 94 3FG this year, which would tie him for second with sr Bryce and leave him 6 behind jr Bryce.
50.6% (can he keep that up? ...do you want to bet against him?) would only be the 2nd best season at valpo (and if you said Lance "The Mask" Barker, I'll treat you to a cold one at McNamara's Cuckoo Club...wait, it what?).
Keith Carter on pace for 52 or 53 steals, which would be the 9th or 8th best season (the latter would tie him with sr Bryce--his high-water mark!)
It probably won't last, but we have 8 players averaging 20 minutes or more. We've never had that; at least as far back as I can check (2001-02). Last year we had 4; Rowdy's sr. yr 6; 2012 & 2005 7, but not 8.
I guess the rotation's pretty well set in stone :) not every day you have a 9 man rotation, but it looks like we will. E-Victor is trending up at 13.4 too, so we'll see. It seems like every conference year there's a change in the rotation at some point (case in point being jordan coleman last year), so stay tuned.
speaking of upward trends, it was noted that we are playing 3 non-D1s this year when normally we do 2. That seemed wrong to me, so I checked and this is the second straight year we've played 3 non-D1s! Of course, year before that, Rowdy's sr. year (can we think of something else to call it? that's catchy? catchier than '2012-13'?) we only played 1, so maybe that evens out. breaking news: Vashil leads the nation with 44 blocks.
Huh? What about the guy from washington?
E-Victor is trending up at 13.4 too, so we'll see.
The goal was for Nickerson to be healthy by the time conference play rolled around. Playing two games in less than 24 hours for a total of 32 minutes this weekend seemed to be an indication as to how far he has progressed. With one more non-conference game and about two weeks before the conference schedule starts, he appears to be nearing his destination at the end of the road to full recovery. I look forward to seeing his play when he gets there!

welp. i was just going by what stat sheet said, but you're right, dude from wash has one more block.
alec peters 8th in NCAA in 3FGM AND has the highest percentage of all the top 14.
tied for 33 in PPG. the only other person playing as few minutes as he does among the leaders is ETSU's Riley with an identical 26.9 mpg (you remember he got 27 against us even though he's no bigger'n a minit); the rest of the top 100 all have more than 28 mpg, although most are well over 30.
47th in ORtg, 9th in pts/40.

Amazing the number of projects and unknowns Valpo seems to bring in that work. Vashil is well on his way to have one of the strongest, if not the best defensive season in VU history. He takes away the easiest buckets around the rim, has been able to pull down rebounds, take care of the ball, and stay out of foul trouble (for the most part). He should be front-runner for defensive player of the year in the HL. Not many players can take away a whole dimension of the game like Vashil has been able to this season. I would imagine he'll keep these strong numbers up in the HL, a guard heavy league. Last season he played great defensively in league play and there's been nothing to change my mind this season. It'll be fun to watch him shut down guys like Hain and Petros, while KC takes away the scoring of Sykes and Howard, while Vashil is a vacuum on the inside. There's no secret to why we have one of the best defenses in the HL, KC's on-ball pressure with Vashil clogging up the inside. Forces teams to take low-percentage outside shots.
KC and Vashil, as of now, are 2 of the top 5 defenders in the league.

yeah, stat sheet hasn't updated upshaw's stats yet. espn giving him 45 now
I should note that when projecting stats for the season, I assume 32 games--12-2 plus JMU, 16 conference games, and the 1 playoff game we're guaranteed.
Obviously I hope we get more. But won't assume.

Valpo's site lists 56 as vusupporter mentioned. That has to be the most accurate. Once again, love correcting Saders :):

Actually, it could also be the most biased.
EDIT: tracked down the VU game by game (that is, Valpo's account). Remember, VU says 56 while the ESPN group says 55.
...whoo boy, this will not be easy.
First discrepancy: VU credits him with 6 for Maine, ESPN etc. 5.
Next: VU credits him with 3 for Portland, ESPN for 4. So tied again.
Those are the only discrepancies.
So the problem is one of addition, since they add, not the same set of numbers, but the same numeric equivalents (i.e. 6+3=5+4).
The answer is, for some reason, 56: ESPN etc.'s numbers add up to 56, but they claim 55.

OK... back to the "Record Watch". (Rolex).... but seriously folks...
Lets talk Defense. Through 19 games this year, we've only given up 1,151 points. 60.58 oppg The last time we were that low? 1951-52 58.04 oppg; 1,393 for the entire 24-game season.
Lets talk Offense. Through 19 games this year, we've scored, 1,398 points. 73.58 ppg. The last time we were that high was 2005-06 with 78.76 for the year.
I know you are just dying to know:
We're scored 155,129 points over the lifetime. Given up 152,824. A difference of .9431 points per game
We won 1,277 games and lost 1,167 games

Would be better to know over how many seasons for all of them.
Nope not helpful
How many GAMES would be, howeva
I respectfully disagree ;)
Bartow's 93 wins over 13 seasons averages out to just over 7 wins a season -- terrible. Oh, wait. He was only at Valpo for 6 seasons. That's 15+ games per season. Much better.
But I could also go for the overall games coached vs. wins. Bartow according to the Valpo Athletic site records has a 92-70 W/L record.
Tom Smith, on the other hand, had 84 wins. Over 4 seasons that would be 21 wins preseason, But wait (again) he was here for 8 seasons, so his wins per season was half that -- 10.5. His overall record was 84-138.
I like Bryce. 82 wins. Over 3.6 seasons = 22.7 wins per season. Pretty cool. 82-39 overall. Either way you cut it it is helpful. Actually I REALLY like Bryce. Scary, with those numbers, he might not be around much longer. Geez, I hope he stays at least this season and the next two.

George Keogan was not at Valpo for long but he did become a famous coach in three sports at a school about a one hour drive from Valpo.
George E. Keogan (March 8, 1890 – February 17, 1943) was an American football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football), basketball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball), and baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball) coach, most known for coaching University of Notre Dame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Notre_Dame) from 1923 to 1943. Keogan never had a losing season in his 20 years at Notre Dame.
The Minnesota Lake, Minnesota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Lake,_Minnesota) native attended University of Minnesota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Minnesota) from 1909 to 1913. He began coaching high school varsities after his freshman year in college, guiding first Lockport High School (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockport_High_School) (1910–1911) followed by Riverside High School (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riverside-Brookfield_High_School) (1911–1912). Meanwhile he was also coaching several college basketball teams: Charles City College (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_City_College) in Iowa (1909–1910), Superior State Teachers College (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Wisconsin%E2%80%93Superior) in Wisconsin (1912–1914), Saint Louis University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Louis_University)(1914–15) and the University of St. Thomas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_St._Thomas_(Minnesota)) in St. Paul, Minnesota (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Paul,_Minnesota) (1917–1918). During World War I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I) he served at Great Lakes Naval Training Station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes_Naval_Training_Station). After briefly coaching Allegheny College (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegheny_College) in Meadville, Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meadville,_Pennsylvania) (1919–1920) and
Valparaiso, Keogan arrived at University of Notre Dame. He served as head basketball and baseball coach, as well as assistant to the legendary football coach Knute Rockne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knute_Rockne). Keogan compiled a 327–96–1 at Notre Dame.
Keogan died on February 17, 1943 of a heart attack at his home in South Bend, Indiana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Bend,_Indiana).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Keogan#cite_note-1)
After his death, Moose Krause (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose_Krause) took over his job as Notre Dame's head basketball coach.
But I could also go for the overall games coached vs. wins. Bartow according to the Valpo Athletic site records has a 92-70 W/L record.

He was smoking hot (or at least a word that rhymes with hot).
Washington Huskies junior 7-footer Robert Upshaw has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules, the school announced.
"We wish Rob well as he moves forward in his life, and we will do our best to support him in the future," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said in a statement.
Upshaw, who transferred to UW from Fresno State, has failed multiple drug tests while at both schools, sources close to the situation told ESPN.
The ultra-talented big man averaged 10.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game for the Huskies and leads the nation in blocks.
Washington is coming off a loss at Utah on Sunday in which Upshaw scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots. The Huskies (14-5, 3-4 Pac-12) will host Stanford on Wednesday.http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12232892/washington-huskies-dismiss-robert-upshaw-program-violation-team-rules (http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/12232892/washington-huskies-dismiss-robert-upshaw-program-violation-team-rules)
In Things No One Predicted This Year, Vashil has the season block record ... before February.
With 73 blocks, he has the record, but he's not going to pass Raitis for the all-time record (unless the NCAA wises up and finally gives him that extra year of eligibility).
So he's in block limbo. 73 blocks season (old record Moussa's 72) and 145 career (interestingly...had 72 in his previous two years...now has lapped himself, so to speak). 145 still far behind Raitis' 228, unless he starts averaging 8 a game.
So let's turn to other things.
Most points, first two seasons
1) Bryce, 912
2) Alec, 859 (speaking of passing self's entire previous career--almost! 433 last year, 426 this)
At his current rate of 17.8 ppg, Alec could tie or break this record with 3 more games. Pace would give him 570 for the season, or the 8th best season ever.
Since slowing his torrid early pace, Alec's on pace for the 6th most 3s in a season, with 81 (61 now). His current rate of 46.2% is good for 5th all-time, should it hold.
Most points, first two seasons
1) Bryce, 912
2) Alec, 871
Needing 129 pts to become the first player to score 1000 in his first 2 years, Alec needs one more game than the 7 we're guaranteed to get (although since we'll go to the postseason someplace, maybe we should start projecting based on 8) at his current rate of 17.5 ppg.
...Did you know that in the D1 era VU has only had 1 player score more than 20 ppt, and that only in one season? Don't cheat by looking it up, but just think about it for a second...

4) jr Casey Schmidt 47.7%

It's pretty amazing to see what Vashil has done this season. Top 3 in the nation in blocked shots, one of the best defenders in the country, he has been sure handed this season, his offensive have increased as well.
I recall early in the season Ickow asked Coach Gore (I think it was Gore) who was most likely to be in the NBA, his response was Vashil. Will he be NBA ready next season? No. But the steps he has taken in his brief basketball career is pretty amazing. He still hasn't plateaued out, he is still improving and getting better day-by-day. In his 3 playing season he went from a little used guy sitting on the bench to a top-tier defender in the country. He does have NBA potential, he still needs to add more to his game but interior defense is always a plus to have.
Is he gonna be playing for the Bulls next season? No. After 3 to 4 seasons of playing basketball in Europe or elsewhere? Maybe.

It was Ashby that I was most likely remembering. He did attend SB Adams, and played four years at Valpo. His 1247 points are still good for 17th on our all-time scoring list, passed by 12 that played after Ashby finished his career.
After my earlier post, I had to look it up. How soon we forget. After Smith and before Homer's teams were competitive.

Daryl Ashby was by far the star of the Adams Eagles who lost to Valpo High in the Saturday night championship game. I also remember attending the semi-state games at Purdue but I don't remember who Valpo High played against. When I heard Ashby was going to Valpo U it was really exciting for a kid like me.

Oh yeah, Glen Sudhop. Ended up at NC or NC State, didn't he? It sure was a big man's game back then. Feed it to the post and he gets fouled or just slips it over the top of the rim.

That makes sense. Ashby played for Ken Rochlitz. Life was rough for Valpo and Rochlitz. Dick Koenig was adamant that Valpo move into Div. I (University Division). It did eventually bring Homer Drew and son Bryce here.

Except, and I'm sure I'm repeating myself, on that night, little Billy Hart owned him in the paint, at least on defense.
Most points, first two seasons
1) Bryce, 912
2) Alec, 882
...Did you know that in the D1 era VU has only had 1 player score more than 20 ppg, and that only in one season? Don't cheat by looking it up, but just think about it for a second... my favorite TRACY GIPSON, 21.3, 1992-93.
3FG%, season
4) jr Casey Schmidt 47.7%
5) Alec, 46.7%
6) soph Scott Anselm, 46.1%
3FG%, career
t6. Alec, 42.3%
t6. Rob Cavanaugh, 42.3%
(I'm sure they're not literally tied, but I can't find any of Rob's stats to break it down further.)
As an aside, Alec has 121 3s in his first 60 games. At 2 a game, he's no threat to Bryce's record of 364. Which is a lot of 3s.
He already has more rebounds than last year (167-164). Roughly on pace to be #6 all-time.
And, oh yeah, points. On pace to be #2.
But first things first.
TRIVIA! *WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP* who has VU's steals record?
I will go with Buggs since that's when I really started paying a little bit of attention.
Berdiel?
Isn't it funny? Both are good guesses--Buggs is 6 and Berdiel 3--but neither correct.
I would be willing to wager that if you asked everyone who #1 is in pretty much every other category, they'd be right 95% of the time.
Steals is a funny thing though.

Is it just me or is all the archived old past seasons records and information any longer available? A lot of good defenders come to mind but none seem to stand out. Jarod Loyd comes to mind but he didn't play much his freshman year and his senior year saw him come off the bench for maybe 24 minutes per game. I would think he would still be in the top ten. Brandon McPherson might also be surprisingly up there. He had the slight advantage of playing a few extra games before injury redshirting one season. I am just thinking out loud because I doubt that either would be the correct answer.
Stalin Ortiz, the Columbian?
The only 2 that come to mind that haven't already been mentioned are Lubos and Bryce, although I can't picture either one being quick enough or aggressive enough on defense to our all time leader.
If we are picking 2 then I would say Milo Stovall or Lubos Barton.
My guess is Lubos Barton. He is at the top of almost every stat and given his playing time over all four years he seems like the logical choice.

Since people are asking various trivia questions, I will pose this one.
Assuming a minimum of 4 points scored in their first game, name the three Valpo players in the last 20 years that had their ultimate career high scoring game in their very first game at Valpo.
now that's a great question. wow.
Tony Falu.
Ooof I think Jordan Coleman was one of those.
edit: nope, he had 15 in his first game of his junior year and 16 twice his senior year.

Lubos Barton was one. Scored 27 in his first game, followed it up with 24 the next. Chased those numbers for the rest of his career.
I can't say that I had researched this question completely, though I am very confident that I have the right answers. However, I had to go back and look at Falu. He had 21 in his first game and only eclipsed it once. His best scoring game was 22 at Arizona.
It is not Jordan Coleman (I had to check that one too)
Lubos Barton is one. 27 points against South Carolina in November 1998 at the old RCA Dome in Indianapolis ("this place is bigger than Czech Airport")

Anyone care to have a guess at the other players with a minimum of four points in their first game at Valpo, to have their points in their first game be their ultimate career high? 10 seconds, which completely wrecked his career PPG.
Griffyn Carpenter was the third. He and Stegelmann both played their first games against IU-Kokoma, a program playing its first year at any level.

I think we can return to these now...
The second one is easy--Rowdy's senior year set the record with 26. But more than 22? Hmm...I would have to say ...just guessing years: 6?
Has to be more. This is the 4th time in five years for Valpo winning at least 22 (I think). Seems like a lot of 23 and 24 win seasons in the late 90's early 2000's, but I may be off and I'm too tired to look it up.
Yeah, I'm sure you're right; I didn't think they played enough games a year back in the day to be over 22, so I was just counting the last 20 years, but sometimes they did!
I looked it up, but I won't divulge...ok now someone guess because now it's killing me
I KNOW SOMETHING YOU DON'T KNOW
If we're saying D1 era only I would guess 8 seasons of 22+. If I remember correctly there was a stat Rowdy's senior year that it was the 10th 20+ win season in D1 history, but I might be misremembering.
I counted 8 total--only 1 pre-D1.
So you win!
If we keep winning basketball games, I'm not going to complain.
But, at some point, Alec's either going to have to have a couple of big games, or we're going to need to win a game in a post-season tourney, if he's going to break 1000.

I find it interesting that when we played Butler in the HL and the Bulldogs went to two national championship games some discussed the fact that Butler started their practices every season with emphasizing defense and not working at all on offense during those beginning of the season practices.
When Valpo turns a corner on success this season they are definitely also emphasizing defense. I'm sure that offense is given it's proper due amount of time but if a team doesn't start with defense I really don't believe there can be success.

Wasn't Purdue ranked in 2010? Also if you go way back the Luther Miracle game when they beat no. 19 Notre Dame.

Of course, the most famous game is the Miracle on Mound Street in 1988 when we beat #19 Notre Dame. I remember it fondly as I was sitting right behind Digger Phelps the entire game, and I got to see and hear him throughout, including his comments to the team in a late huddle that they absolutely were not going to lose this game.
I remember the thrill of game-intro... "LaPhonso Ellis"... the first of many future NBA players to scroll through the ARC over the past 30 years...
that might make a fun list to compile.
1. Bryce Drew
2. Chris Kaman, then of CMU, to match up with Raitis
3. Tony Bennett
4. Gordon Hayward

JaJuan Johnson as well from this game. Hummel was injured that season and did not play. He did play pick up games at the ARC, does that count?
Winston Garland, SW MO St, 1986-87
Clinton Smith, Cleveland State, 1985-86
Hilltop counts, presumably? Larry Bird played there? Against Valpo?
While looking up players that played in the NBA from our mid-con days, I found Sherell Ford, from UIC, 1993 and 1994 he would have played at the ARC. He played 36 games in the NBA:

To answer my own question: Butler was ranked at the ARC in 2008, 2009, and 2010. All Valpo losses, alas. So, indeed, a missed opportunity.

That Marquette game was a thriller too. They had to hit a 3 at the buzzer to win. I just checked out the box score. For a Monday night in November we had 4,935 people there. That's more than the championship game in 2013 and any game this season.

That whole core felt way better than they actually were. The next year they had a lead against Wisconsin at half, played #1 Duke (or someone like that) close, and should have beat Butler (Lloyd airballed the front end of a 1 and 1), but looking back, they actually ended up 9-9 in conference with a ~100 RPI. At the time they felt amazing because it was the first year in the new league. But maybe the whole league was a bit better back then.
and a little cross-over on the two questions...
#19 Cincinnati came to the ARC in Fall '03... (and won 68-49) NBA'er Tony Bobbitt was a bearcat. Under Head Coach Bobbie Huggins.
Nate Huffman, Central Michigan 2002
I can remember seeing #3 De Paul in Hilltop February of 1980.
Aguirre and Cummings
Gary Talton.... wait... Does the D-League count? XD
Grant Long, Eastern Michigan 1988
Rawle Marshall - Oakland 2003-2005
Jermaine Taylor, Central Florida 2008-09

What is it about HL refs/rims/cheerleaders/conspiracies? That's who I blame for this split.

I find it interesting that a freshman SUU T-Bird player is the number one 3FG% shooter in the nation with over 50%. That is amazing.
It doesn't surprise me that he is so high up on the national chart, when only being 5th on our all-time list. They moved the 3-pt line back a few feet several seasons ago...
The new season blocks record is 98. The old one was 72. So, should stand for a while. We'll miss you, Vashil, especially the extra year you should've had. His career mark was 170, #2 behind Raitis' 228.
The new record for most points in fresh-soph years is 1003. Alec posted the #8 season for points with 570, and while having more games than most of the rest of those guys on the list helped, he still had to do it. Had he hit one more 3 at the end (wouldn't that've been nice) he'd have tied senior Dan Oppland for season points, and he'd have passed senior Rowdy Broekhoff to have the #6 season in 3FGs alone. (Let that sink in for a second.)
As it is, he posted the #5 all-time 3-pt shooting season, at 46.6%, and is just behind Seth Colclasure for the #5 3FG% career, at 42.55%.
So how much better could he be? I'll leave that to Kyle to project improvement, and simply give the most conservative estimate (what else) and tell you where he'd be if he posts 2 more seasons just like these 2. Just a baseline; obviously he'd do better, just as he exceeded last year this year.
Games
1. Buggs 138
2. Alec 136
Points
1. Bryce 2185
2. Alec 2006
Rebounds
t4. Dan Oppland 782
t4. Alec 782
Field Goals
1. Alec 698
2. Bryce 696
3FG
1. Bryce 364
2. Alec 280
FTs
6. Dan Oppland 364
7. Alec 330
After 20 more FTA he'll be top 10 for FTs as well as 3FGs.
Again, this is the baseline. I mean, why would Bryce leave in the next two years? Because he's the only one who can keep Alec from breaking most of his records ; )
Keep on talking about Alec, but I think we also need to add Tevonn into the equation. I think many of us speculated what it would have been like to have Brandon Woods for three years paired with Rowdy, well now I think we will have a better combination with Tevonn and Alec. I expect Tevonn to improve considerably over the summer, his outside shooting got better as the season progressed and if you look at just conference numbers his 3pt shooting percentage was in the low 40% range. He could easily average 15-16 a game next year.
Quote from: FWalum on March 21, 2015, 11:42:41 AMI think we also need to add Tevonn into the equation
Very good point; I'm not sure where he fits in yet, though we'll have a better idea after next year.
Here are some freshman guard season numbers.
Some I don't have stats for; some don't belong in a comparison because there's just no comparison as freshman to freshman (B-Mac got 10 mpg for 25 games; Berdiel got 14 mpg for 31; Nuness was too long ago to have stats for, as was Tonagel).

As you can see, the best comparison for him in Valpo freshman terms is Milo Stovall. Loyd and Buggs were 1s not 2s, so, duh. But they're really the only freshman guards that got as heavy a run. However, my recollection--feel free to challenge--was that Milo had an amazing freshman year that was pretty close to his ceiling (12.0 ppg as sr, 10.6 as fr).
I also threw in Jimmie Miles despite once calling on this site for a "moratorium on comparisons to Jimmie Miles". I think the statute just ran out on that though.
With LAA out of the picture, at least for a while, we should probably renew this thread.
I took a few notes while listening to my recording of the WVUR broadcast of Chicago State. Others are welcome to clean it up, or update it, etc.
With Vashil getting that extra year after all, there's every chance that Raitis Grafs all-time block mark will fall... maybe against Wright State in February. Vashil's on pace for 72 for this year (with a conservative game estimate, throughout this post), just past Moussa for the second best season, but well off his own mark from last year.
Vashil's also on pace to make it... about #15 in the career rebound standings.
Alec was setting youth records after his sophomore year, so no surprise that career records will come. He's on pace to make it into the top 10 in career scoring, in just his third season. In fact it looks like he entered the record books at #20 tonight. (On the same night he entered a three-way tie for best single game 3P%.)
He's also moved to #8 on the career 3PM chart. (That's right, part way into his junior season.) 3 behind Shawn Huff.
How about FT's? Alec's got a chance to make it into the top-10 single season FTM ranks this year.
He'll soon be eligible for the career FT% ranks, where he'd currently place 9th, behind Rowdy.
How about rebounds? Alec's on pace to make it to 14th in the career ranks this year. After only his junior season.
That's Alec and Vashil, anyone else?
It looks like Keith Carter's got a chance at knocking Jake Diebler out of that #20 career assist spot... in just three seasons.
Skara and some others currently have FG% numbers high enough for the top-10 single season ranks, but it's early. Probably they'll come down a bit towards Earth.

We should make an update for individual records, but the Valpo SID's gotten us started with some team league records.
[tweet]704100169529303044[/tweet]
Seems like the "league" records are regular-season only, not sure about the "all games" records that include non-conference (do they also include the league tournament?).
But, some of these we seem to beat rather soundly

p. 22 or so).
Scoring margin was 09-10 Butler at 13.2, to our 14.7. Rebounding Margin 86-87 Loyola +11.1 to our +13.0. Overall rebounding is tighter, 81-82 Loyola had 43.2 to our 43.6 (higher tempo for their team, perhaps?).
With 93 blocks in the league season, we came very close to the current record, Green Bay 11-12 at 94, but UIC takes it at 101. (Was UIC also the most blocked? Suffering 88. One could wonder about their official scorer...)
For the "all games" records, currently overall rebounding seems too close to call vs. Dayton 90-91. Xavier 89-90 keeps their rebounding margin record. Looks like scoring margin is ours, +14.3 over Butler 01-02 +12.6.
Despite Oakland leading the country in scoring (87.3, 88.2 in conference) they don't come close to 87-88 Xavier which was at 95.2/95.0.
Ending the 2016-17 campaign...

Considering Homer was 24-87 (21.62%) after four seasons, his final tally is quite impressive!
Last 18 years for Homer: 347-218 for a 61.42%.
Not a lot of outstanding things this year... except #6 performance on the court.

I was hoping that it would be acknowledged in the write-up after our loss today, but do we have some type of ultimatum to only spin positive news about this season in those after game summaries? After today, we have officially clinched our first under .500 home record since the 1991-1992 season. That is not some simple thing to be swept under the rug. That is 32 seasons of at least .500 ball at home, which is quite a feat, and unfortunately, the last vestige of our successful days to go away. SID, why no mention of this aspect??

Tim Hostetler was one great ball handler and assist man. He, like a lot of point guards, passed first and looked to shoot when there weren't any better options.
I tried to look up some facts but could only find that his niece, Kasey, played soccer at Seattle U & Western Washington.
