I became interested in football recruiting a few years back when a friends son was being recruited to play D1 (ended up at Ball State).

Recruiting at this level must be an amazing challenge.

Per the current list we have offers out to 170 players to find 30-40 players.

A fascinating list.  The range of recruits is really impressive and a big tip of the hat to the staff.  The list includes kids from 19 states ranging from Houston, Texas to Apple Valley, Minnesota and Richmond Virginia to West Hills, California. Still, there is plenty of local/Indiana kids including from LaPorte and Portage.

I do volunteer work with Concordia Lutheran High School's football program and as some of you may know they had a fantastic season here in Indiana and were the 3A State Champions this year.  They dominated the 3A playoffs averaging 53 PPG while giving up 21 PPG, most of those in the 4th quarter after the games were really over.  Asked our coach the other day whether any of our athletes, a number of whom were All State selections, had received any interest from VU and was surprised when he said "no", and that he rarely hears anything from VU in regards to our athletes.  I know that being a 3A school many times means that you don't get the looks many of the 6A and 5A school do, but this still surprised me that a close Lutheran university would not be more engaged with the largest local Lutheran high school.

Just sent the recruiting coordinator a copy of your post.  Hopefully something will come of it.

I've always thought that every VU football recruiting coordinator (actually every coach, not just football) should have a separate Lutheran High School database and maintain at least annual contact with the school's AD and Head FB Coach if just for the purposes of (1) emphasizing and reinforcing the Lutheran foundation of the university and (2) asking about any players who those coaches think can play at the PFL D-I level.  That should be a proactive outreach.  Even if it doesn't get us a player one year (or ever), it might the next or the next after that.  And it is contact with our traditional base which needs to happen to preserve our identity as a private university.

Not as a criticism but rather just a suggestion.  If you posters have a concern don't hesitate to reach out to the people at Valpo. My email to the recruiting coordinator took about an hour for a response.  Please see below:

Thanks so much for reaching out to us. Its always nice to hear from our fan base and alums, in this case both at the same time. I have forwarded the information about Concordia Lutheran High School to our LBs coach who recruits Fort Wayne.

Currently our coaches are in 8 different states looking for the next group of Crusaders, so there are some schools that slip through the cracks. Regardless, hopefully you will be able to make it out to a game next fall. As always, if there is anything you need from me, feel free to reach out. Thanks again.

72, you are spot on.  I have been in contact with the VU HC, OC, DC and RC on numerous occasions over the past few years.  And I make a point to shake a hand and say hello at every game I attend (too few unfortunately). All are responsive and a pleasure to chat with.  Which brings up a good point.  If there is a kid in a poster's area who could help a VU program, regardless of which sport, by all means email the coach and let him/her know.  Part of the problem these guys face is that they recruit NATIONALLY so there are bound to be local cracks that good players fall through.

Our football staff has done a fine job and I think we should all be pleased with the progress they have been making over the past three years.

Having said that, i find this boilerplate explanation from the recruiting coordinator to be completely unsatisfactory.  I simply do not believe that a Lutheran school an hour away from VU, with a state championship football team, somehow "slipped through the cracks."  A small public high school championship program from, say, Kentucky -- I can accept that.  But not Concordia Lutheran from Ft. Wayne.  Sorry, but I do not find this statement to hold water. It is disheartening to learn that a high school like this merits next to zero attention from VU.  We should have close ties to a school like this, for many reasons, and I am mystified why we don't.

Paul, If I'm not mistaken, you may have some "influence" in this regard.  Please exert it!!  I totally agree that the Lutheran nature of our university is being pushed to the side and that is not acceptable.

Just an FYI regarding recruiting.  I have been monitoring the PFL fan board for a couple of years and finally broke down and joined.  On one thread was some information on Drake's recruiting offers.  Interesting that Valpo came up quite often as extending offers to many of the same kids.  One disappointing class of 2017 loss to Drake was a 6-4, 295# OL from Muskego, WI.

Seems undersized as usual.  I think I'd rather have the 6'4" 295 lber who got away to Drake.

Undersized is much better than you think. With the weight program many kids that go non-scholarship football are either undersized or not talented enough. Carlson always recruited for size but the players were not as talented. Now we are bringing in kids that in 2-3 years of weight training will be able to compete with the big boys. As for Nico and recruiting getting any starter from St. Thomas Aquinas is a major win for Valpo. Will have time to grow into his role at center with RSSO Jack Jarnigan and SO Sean Pierce returning.

Saw two guys on the list from Stow HS, which has been a top D1 school in Ohio the past couple years.  Both would be very helpful to the football program. Lindsay also hit 3 3s in a game the other night and has a great looking shot....

Here's a couple links if you want to see them in action.

Jonah Weiland is a fantastic punter.  Had a 98 yder this year.  He should be getting D1 scholly offers from MAC and high end academic schools.  You can see Jonah kick in the link above or below.

Drake having a QB committ isn't surprising. I think they are down to 2 or 3 on the roster. Valpo's QB situation, to a recruit, is going to look pretty solid unless one or two of the fall rostered players didn't show up yesterday. It wouldn't shock me if Valpo picks up no QBs.

Yes, that would be a Presidential Scholarship.  Might it not quite cover everything?  Possibly, but not much.  The kid is a great student and probably wants to be challenged rather than skating by for four years.  Still, a win over the big boys (who may have offered a walk-on, is still great.  In this video he pancaked a bunch of dudes:

Presidential doesn't get you even half way to the true cost of attendance. Director's is about half the total cost.  There's another award which is given out to a couple of students more specific to outstanding Lutheran students.

I stand corrected.  The Directors Scholarship is the biggest non-athletic scholarship at $26,000.  The current sticker price is 46,680 per the website.  He could be getting other outside scholarships and/or  student loans and on-campus jobs or grant money if he comes from a high need family.  The only athletic full-rides are for basketball and volleyball.

A general number I use when talking to players is a cost of $50,000 per year when everything is factored in. If you're the Valedictorian you may get half of it paid for plus the other possibilities you mention.

Holy crap!  This kid is a stud and with breakaway speed.  A track site said he ran a 7.28 60 and a 23.99 200 meter.  That is before this coming spring season.  Watch the highlight film. The kid can fly!

Some terrific size, particularly at linebacker.  Not sure we have had a bunch off 200 plus lb. linebackers before.  Also better size at WR

300lbs at 6'2" may actually be too big to be athletic enough for the position. At that size, if he were athletic enough at the collegiate level he'd probably be headed to a scholarship program. Growing into the body is better in my opinion.

I think he HAS grown into his body and will only get bigger.  Take a look at his highlites.  He plays pulling guard in a winged T formation.  Pretty solid.

That's against HSers where size is going to outweigh the ability to move. I'd bet, if anything, the kid would trim down if there's an expectation he's going to improve at the collegiate level. As I said, a 6'2" 300lb OG (always a potential Center as well at that size) who's not recruited to play at a scholarship program says something in my opinion. It would probably be more impressive if he was 20 to 25 lbs lighter. For instance, the player who lined up next to Nick Antonacci (Valpo recruit) at STA is 6'3" and 270. He's being recruited fairly significantly as a Div I player. He'll be bigger when he plays in college but he's an athlete (as is Antonacci).

The new recruit for Valpo may actually be a fit at DT if he's got a solid enough base.

However, we shall see.

Interesting distribution. Lotsa beef which is good. 4 WRs and no QBs or RBs. One potential DB. With only 2 WRs graduating and only one of those who played significant time along with only one graduating next year it is only odd when compared to the same situation at both QB and RB. They could be having some problems getting a QB to committ with not a lot of room from a new recruit to fit in but they need to grab a RB and DB or two without putting up a zero for the new class OR some of these guys will find themselves at new positions.

With 6 QB's returning it could be a challenge to add one but we have several possibilities still out there. Watching Wright's tape he played wildcat last season.

I agree I would like to add a RB though we are pretty deep if it does not happen once again lots of offers out there. To me the only place where we have to add someone is at punter. As far as I know we have only one and made through last season at that level.

Having said that any new players would be welcomed regardless of position.

The roster as a whole should be good for next season. I was thinking more from a future distribution of positions throughout the roster standpoint.

Yep, 2 QBs.

Markoff is from Ohio -- 6-3, 200, 4.65 40.  Hudl clips show about 50-50 runs to passes.  Speedy and illusive.  Doesn't throw as well as Bilinski but can run option and scrambles really well.

Bilinski is from Illinois -- 6-3, 189 (no 40 time listed).  Hudl clips show he is the more polished passer of the two, but doesn't run as well.

Of the two, it would seem that Markoff is a better fit in the Cecchini offensive system (like Ben and like Dalton was supposed to be before being so frequently injured.)

As in the past, this is the first wave of signees -- they had all their paperwork in prior to NSD 2017 so their names could be released.   There will be more.

Very impressed by Markoff. VERY FAST and made some tough throws as well.  At one point he was at his own goal line being pressured and on his heals and threw it 40 yards in the air. He looks like the real deal and I would think he could be a very good compliment to Jimmy's skill set.

On paper this is an excellent class.....size on both lines, speed and lots of depth basically everywhere. We even added two long snappers as RB Haugh also snaps. Not announced yet but we added a punter/kicker out of Florida named Logan Robinson who was one the best kickers in Florida apparently.

Kudos to the coaching staff!!

Well then Mr. Ng will be watching from the bench.  He averaged 37.7 per punt while Mr. Robinson averaged 43 his senior year.

I'll text the coaches.

It's not always about yards.  Depending on what the coaches want in given situations a lot of emphasis is placed on field position and punts downed inside the 20 may of which reduce the yards but achieve objectives.

It'll always be wait and see in the fall.

The Greatest recruit name in America just signed with Illinois State. I kid you not his name is 'Kobe Buffalomeat'. Valpo missed a good one.

Native American or just a radical name changer?

Apparently I wasn't the only one curious about the origin of this recruit's name.

Wright went to St. Thomas freshman and sophomore year before traveling to Wellington to play along side Miami freshman star Richardson. This kid can be the next one.

Since our original announcement I had found the following additions:

K/P   ..           Logan Robinson   ..   Wellington, FL   ..   5-8   150
DB   ..           Jake Gapinski   ..   Mason, OH   ..           6-1   198
LB   ..           Luke Stansfield   ..   Philadelphia, PA   ..   6-2   240
WR/DB   ..   Bryce Leach   ..   Sacremento, CA   ..   6-3   180

Robinson had been mentioned previously. I am pretty sure there is one more commit I can not locate.

Coach Cecchini just released series of tweets announcing the addition of 8 new commits who augment the original release made right after 2017 NSD.  No Hudl links or stats (Ht. WT, etc.) were provided so those interested need to find them themselves.

https://twitter.com/valpoufootball

Bryce Leach - DB - California
Daniel LaRose - WR - Florida
Kyle Ulbrich - P/K - Ohio
Jacob Gapinski - LB - Ohio
Brett Bittner - TE - Chicago
Logan Robinson - K/P - Florida
Antonio DarGaj - WR - Ohio
Luke Stansfield - FB - Pennsylvania

Indy, you got all of them except the Chicago RB - good hunting.  Then there were a couple more too.  Will be interesting to get the heights and weights and watch some clips.  Interesting that Robinson is listed as a K/P and Ulbrich is a P/K probably reflecting their primary skill.

By my count this class now has 40 athletes.  Remains to be seen how many show up in August or whether some really late signings come in.

Bryce Leach - DB - Sacramento, California 6-3 180
Daniel LaRose - WR - Fort Lauderdale, Florida 6-1 210
Kyle Ulbrich - P/K - Mentor, Ohio 6-0 185
Jacob Gapinski - LB - Mason, Ohio 6-1 198
Brett Bittner - TE - Chicago, IL 6-5 205
Logan Robinson - K/P - Wellington, Florida 5-8 150
Antonio DarGaj - WR - Shaker Heights, Ohio 6-4 190
Luke Stansfield - FB - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 6-2 240

Some good size in this group.  Interestingly I missed Brett Bittner but had us recruiting a WR our of Florida named Brett Bitter. I am assuming that the RB out of Chicago, Corey Shannon's paperwork is not complete.

I wonder if the closing of St. Joe's will allow Valpo to add some quality athletes to the FB program.  They should be eligible immediately.  Any input of observations?
