Valpo Basketball / Re: Coaching Rumors

VULB#62 hit it on the nose. This is a special situation here with Valpo basketball. Time for MH and the brass to walk the walk. I wonder if they really understand how important the Drew name is to the athletic department AND the university. The university as a whole seems to be in a very healthy financial state.

Men's basketball has the ability to be the biggest marketing tool for Valparaiso University. CBS, ESPN, TBS, and TNT don't air plays and musicals.

A new/renovated basketball facility is how many decades away? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the team doesn't even have a legit practice facility right? Can't blame Bryce one bit when he leaves. He doesn't seem to be too swayed by pay/salary. He deserves a better arena than the prep gym he's working with now. If the administration was worth even half its pay, it would've realized its apathy towards bettering the situation would eventually lead to the face of the athletic department leaving for greener pastures.

We might as well enjoy the last days/couple years while we can. We're in the twilight of our basketball heyday. Greg Tonagel/Jake Diebler as Bryce's successor? Talk about a fall from grace. Every effort needs to be made to show Bryce this is a respectable job. Valpo will regress alot without him.

Are we talking about the same ath dept that has their swimming team race in the 4th best pool in town behind the local hotels? As others have wisely pointed out, there are far too many upgrades that need to happen with current programs and facilities (ARC, new fieldhouse, pool, football locker rooms, baseball). Valpo can't afford to support anything that would resemble the money pit that hockey would be. And just for the record, I love hockey.

I doubt we'll see a statement from the Athletics department. That's not this regime's M.O. I asked a former staff member about why they're so hush-hush about personnel matters (injuries/suspensions) and she said it's because coaches don't want other teams to be aware of these things.

Even if there was a recruit at the party - and I've yet to read that anywhere else - it doesn't reflect any more poorly on the coaching staff than it does the Man in the Moon. I don't know the coaches personally but I'm sure that him/her didn't invite a high school senior on campus with a kegger as part of the nightly agenda.

College coaches are under enough stress as it is from the million things on their plate. I refuse to hold them responsible for what their players do at midnight on a Saturday.

I can only imagine what's going through Hamnik's mind right now. He came from an SEC school where this stuff was a nightly occurrence.

If the school doesn't come down hard and swift on these kids (scholarships revoked, public flogging, quartering, etc.), it'll just be a matter of time before they're adults removing tags from their mattresses.

How many scholarships do the teams hand out?

I think it's a pretty fair price to pay to see an 8-1 D1 team with an emerging superstar take on a perennial Tourney team. It's a Saturday night and in addition to what should be a great game, we're getting halftime entertainment (The Bucket Boys are impressive).  I'll be there - granted I purchased the five-game pack at the beginning of the season.

I expect a lot of fellow student-athletes and a handful of the general student population to be loud and rowdy in the student section. The ARC isn't the nicest place to watch a basketball game, but it doesn't take away from the product(s) on the court.

If a family of four can afford the cost of living in the city of Valparaiso, that family can most likely afford to spend just under $100 on a Saturday night. A night out at the movies with popcorn/candy/pop would run just as much.

i was back on campus for homecoming and while the new weight room is a baby step in the right direction, it was needed years ago.  Valpo has something like 20 sports and until this year used the one weight room in the arc? Brown field is still nothing more than a hs facility. I didn't notice anything different at the tennis courts except screens on the fences that finally have the new shield. I'd be happy to admit im wrong if I missed something there.

Speaking of the field house when is construction supposed to begin? these things look fancy on paper but can we expect it to be up and running in 10 years? what's the cost and will the university pitch in? I haven't heard much news on the field house/parking garage. I'm anxious but don't want to get disappointed. Athletics at valpo have taken a back seat for so long.

and here we are a year and half later with no progress or even promise except a running track that makes the university a little closer to valpo high in regards to facilities. It's just a matter of time before valpo is fortunate to have the horizon league and not the other way around. Other schools are bettering themselves. Valpo is obviously okay being middle of the road or lower.

Laugh at the ramblers all you want but take a look around the athletic buildings in valpo to see why our best days are behind us. "The shot" was last century. Time for the crusaders to get a new attraction.
