Senior Night. Two Years ago, the engagement; Last year, the Pregnancy... what's up this year?
(Oh, we'll probably win the game handily...as if that will be the focus of the evening.)
Panther Nation has lost 6 straight.
=======================from the UDM Recap======================
The Crusaders (22-6, 12-3 Horizon) maintained their one-game lead in the Horizon League standings with the win and return home for the regular season home finale on Tuesday evening at the ARC. It will be Senior Night at the ARC, as – along with senior team managers, band members, cheerleaders and Crusaderettes – Peters, Hammink, Jubril Adekoya, Nick Davidson and Jason Karys will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., but be sure to arrive early to catch the Senior Night ceremony. As always, the game can be seen live on ESPN3, WatchESPN and the ESPN app, and heard live on the Valpo Sports Network (WVUR, 95.1 FM, Valparaiso; WVLP, 103.1 FM, Valparaiso). Links for the live coverage will be available via ValpoAthletics.com.
Thank you, Seniors. I hope the ARC is standing room only and louder than ever so that this group of men has an appropriate send-off.
The note says arrive early, I thought senior night stuff occurred after the game?
Anywho...Valpo 83-66 winners.
Unfortunately we will not be able to be there Tuesday. Will the VU
Athletic site tape the senior night "festivities"? That may be the most exciting event of the evening.
Thanks to the seniors.
If ESPN3 does not stream the senior speeches, Valpo should.
Valpo 83
Milw 53
Last time to see our Seniors play at home. Going to miss the great plays from Alec and the Hammink Hammers. Going to miss seeing Alec's little ritual before the starting line up and the entertaining insane antics of Nick Davidson on the bench. When Espn shows them as highlights you know he's got game.

Historically, I've read the rather-lengthy script of the player/manager accomplishments (sometimes Cheerleaders, Crusaderettes and Band Members)... the Post game was the player speeches.
One final time for the record: J yes; Jubril no.
Did we just go 10 minutes without play stopping? Is that a record in college basketball the past 10 years?
Smits is just a complete liability.

His Defensive game is getting exposed. Just picking up obvious fouls.
I'm sure he's going to have a long offseason with Coach Gore working on his rim protection and hopefully learning to use his size on the defensive side of the ball.

There's only a few games left and he's still running to the top of the three point line to double team the dribbler/high ball screen. He either gets out of position there, forcing a mismatch down low, picks up a foul at the top, or picks up a foul trying to cover back. Just camp out in the paint dude!

Are we really contemplating losing on our home court to one of the worst teams/programs in D1 hoops?
We are gutless, aren't we? The sweep to Oakland without being competitive gave it away, but this would be the nail in the coffin that this team just doesn't have an ounce of intestinal fortitude.
What is going on? The guys just look content tonight. We need to step on the gas pedal and kill this Milwaukee teams confidence.
Valpo plays to the level of our competition sometimes... We are always going to get the best effort from the bottom feeder teams.
(speak of the devil as I'm typing this out we're showing a little more effort)
Smits. Ugh.
5 point lead disappears in seconds.
Again.
This team is a clown show. If they lose on senior night, it'd actually be pretty fitting for the seniors. We'll remember them as a gigantic fart.
We will go as far as Sorrola can carry us
This could be a senior night debacle. Hope not!!

I'll guess that the staff wants the double but Smits just can't get back. Typical play these days.

Ok lets not get dramatic. This is the winningest class in Valpo history.
This team definitely plays to its level of competition.
They've had 2 bad losses in conference. The 2nd time to Green Bay and 1st time to Oakland. The second game to Oakland we played better but Oakland was great that game and were hitting all their shots. Credit to them.

I believe we were down at half and had to come up with a dominant 2nd half to pull out the W. Lost senior night in '14 as well but that was our "down" year and against a 2nd place Cleveland State team.
It was nice to see a close game for once, I just wish it was against a better team.

So have I. During the game we can hear only half of what John says.
Third game in five days for Valpo, including a 4-hour bus ride back following Sunday's game. Meanwhile, Milwaukee hosted Green Bay on Saturday and hadn't played since the previous Saturday.
I couldn't listen to Senior Night. Any notable remarks from Jubril or others?
Lottich was pretty emotional regarding Jubril. Praising him for his outstanding leadership and ability to manage the stress. Definitely seems like Jubril is the heart of the team which explains why his full suspension has taken the air out of the team. Alec spoke about coming back to play at Valpo and how hard the team will work to get to the NCAA tournament cause the fans deserve it.
I kinda feel bad for Lottich. First year as head coach and you have this giant moral killer and it apparently happens to the de facto leader of the team for what should be the capstone year for your star player. All things considered I think this team has rallied well, despite the last two games. Plus our two big guys have gotten way more experience then we expected from them and they are both in their first year of eligibility. Micah has also got minutes and showed great ability even with inconsistency.

I think it's very easy to label a team a poor team when they have several poor performances. What we fail to see is that this Milwaukee has many talented players. They went to OT with Oakland and Detroit on the road. If not for 3 missed free throws would have beaten both of them.

Milwaukee having their second overtime game in 3 days had to really hurt their chances of upsetting the slumping Grizzlies. The Panthers' Wichman missed 3 straight FT's with 5.5 seconds left with any one of those misses being a made FT would have won Milwaukee the game.
It's easier to think that Valpo is playing to Milwaukee's level when what I saw was that Milwaukee has truly stepped up their game (I saw them play the Crusaders in Milwaukee) and played more to Valpo's level. Yes, Valpo could have played to a higher level and blew out the Panthers but what I saw is much improvement from Milwaukee (especially the long range shooting of Brock Stull) that challenged a "good/not great" Valpo showing.

I get your overall point, but for the record, Valpo DID play Detroit in between Oakland and Milwaukee and had scrubs in with like 5 minutes left.

You're on to something - I thought Milwaukee played pretty well at times. They were draining some deep threes, shot clock buzzer beaters, and smooth floaters, while Valpo was missing open looks and commiting stupid fouls. Valpo's defense really kicked in gear at the end, and I didn't ever think Milwaukee had a chance to actually win.

Agree with you, and so do I. He's the guy who had to take over the reigns of the Drew dynasty, as if that isn't enough pressure to begin with. Then he gets hit with the Skara situation shortly thereafter. Then comes the Keith Carter denial. Then comes the NCAA investigation and the JA suspension. That's a hell of a lot of drama for a first year head coach. I think he's handled it extraordinarily well all things considered.
One thing though. I hope Lottich puts the breaks on the JA team protest/statement/movement moving forward. The black tees need to be packed away. Alec needs to go back to #25. The team has made their point. Enough. It's over. Life isn't fair. Time to get back to putting the entire focus on getting to the NCAA tournament. If we care about the #1 seed, the post season essentially starts this weekend.
Why wasn't there a press conference?

I agree with you CrusaderJoe, a lot of distractions for a first time first year HC. But that's the real world as you put it, we all have these distractions and pitfalls in our jobs.
I'm still torn on the Skara situation....THIS IS THE WAY AAU AND NCAAM BBALL IS, why fight up hill both ways? The Drews weren't perfect clearly, they had their pipeline...
My opinion on the Skara situation is that it could have been avoided. Matt has the right to choose his staff. However, I see nothing wrong adding an alumni to the staff that could help recruit Europe and Skara would have stayed.
I don't understand why they guarded 13 so close. The guy wouldn't take the shot if he was the only one in the gym. Chasing him left Stull open for several of his 3s.
Happy with a win, happy with a win when challenged. Let's wrap up the (not so) important 1 seed this weekend!!

There was one. The crew that usually tapes it was in the Arena taping the senior speeches and by the time they had all of their cables and cameras set, the conference was ending. So, they asked ML for a quote in the hallway.
I'm told they had not intended to do a press conference but it happened.

Well said. It's not unlike losing coworkers due to downsizing. There's a time to mourn, but it becomes self-destructive to remain in that emotional state too long.
The entire team needs to pick up the pieces and move on, or risk bringing the whole ship down. It's Matt's job to lead the way.

Alec needs to get back to rebounding for sure. Valpo only won the rebounding battle by 2, 27-25. If Milwaukee had shot the few FT's they did take more consistently (4 for 9) that game would have been dangerously close. Valpo shot 9 for 12 from the FT line so it was an improvement over the Detroit game.
Both teams shot 51% from the field but Brock Stull's 3-point shooting made a huge difference as the Panthers shot 38.9% from three with Stull, a freshman from Rockford Boylan, going 6 for 7 from three for 86%. Valpo shot 31.6% from three with Alec going 4 for 9 from three.
Valpo has the Best record in the league, the best talent, best rebounders and defensive players, time to get to work and wrap this thing Friday. Time to show that they can over come adversity
We can't wrap it up on Friday... Best we can do on Friday is clinch "no worse than a tie" for first place in the regular season (aka banner-time), unless Green Bay does us a favor. Have I told you how much I like the Green Bay team in the Resch Center?

Anyone with a pair of eyes can see they're not "wearing it" well. Last night's win was another lackluster performance, at best. When the end of this year's story is written, it is not going to be about what happened to Jubril, or how bad the players felt, or how many "23's" they wore. Those are just events along the way. The "story" will either be about the adversity the team dealt with and overcame to reach their goals --or-- how they allowed adversity to destroy everything they had worked for. Right now, I see a team that's staggering to the finishing line at the very moment we need to be playing our best basketball of the year.

No. Being the #1 seed in the conference tournament does.
If we were to split our games and Oakland wins out, they would be the #1 seed based on sweeping the season series.
I agree that the performance last night was lackluster. However, it was senior night and the Jubril thing is still fresh. Doesn't mean we can't turn it around on this next road trip.
The next two weeks will say a lot about just how good of a coach Lottich is. Can he get this team past the emotional trauma and make the necessary game adjustments to deal with the likes of Oakland/Green Bay/Wright State/NKU?
Some thoughts on last nights game. We are a completely different team when Tevonn is able to knock down his mid-range jumper and drive aggressively to the basket. The problem is he has been really inconsistent. He showed flashes last night of still being able to finish through contact and pull up for the quick 17 footer. Hopefully that trend continues. I think his biggest problem is that he plays best angry and borderline out of control, which gets him into foul trouble. We need Tevonn to find his happy medium of agression. We pretty much know what we are going to get from everyone else. He is our X factor and our end of the year success will largely fall on his shoulders.
I predict:
Valpo beats Wright State.
Oakland Loses to Green Bay.
Jason Karys starts at point guard against Northern Kentucky.
A Valpo win and Oakland loss on Friday wraps up the No. 1 seed and NIT bid for the Crusaders.
A Valpo loss and Oakland win on Friday gives Oakland the inside track for No. 1 seed and NIT bid. Valpo would need to win on Sunday and have Oakland lose to Milwaukee to finish No. 1.
A Valpo loss and Oakland loss on Friday does nothing but delay the final outcome to Sunday and it brings Green Bay closer.
I think if the refs had not let as much contact go and called more fouls ( I really don't understand how Derrik was able to foul out on ticky-tack fouls) Valpo could have gone to the FT line a lot more than Milwaukee, which is not unusual for the home team, and spread the lead out more and won the game more easily. The FT difference was Valpo 12, Milw 9. That is not the usual difference for the home team. What the refs let go was awful at some points along with the 9/10? minute section with no stoppage in play. It was at the 11:26 mark in the 1st half that the third foul of the game was called.

Different people deal with adversity in different ways. The immediate confusion and disappointment of the NCAA ruling has, by now, dissipated. The members of the team are now faced with three choices (two of which push them in a positive direction and can give them the energy they need to move past this -- either one works):
1) Use this as a rallying point, keep it in the forefront of everything they do, don't lose sight of the situation -- essentially play with a big chip on their shoulders the rest of the way and don't take s%$# from anyone. Play mean and punish our opponents for the NCAA's decision - why? cuz we can't get at the suits at the NCAA.
2) Erase the past two weeks (actually the whole JA suspension) from everyone's memory banks and take care of business the way they know they are capable of. Put it out of mind and get back to fundamentals and come closer together as a team -- (cliche' time -- do your job!).
3) Come to the conclusion "oh, woe is us." Give into the temptation that says we've been screwed over so why continue to bang our heads against a wall that we can't break through. Go through the motions and play listlessly.
I sense that #3 was the immediate, short-term reaction -- more like a fog of disbelief. I hope that the players use these next couple of days before they travel to WSU and NKU (and into MCM) to snap out of it, decide to not lay down and feel sorry for themselves and go either with #1 (just my way of dealing with stuff like this, so I like this one) or #2.

Agreed with #3 being the short term, and the mark of a good team is short term memory loss!! Oakland just has our number, like Wright State last year. Going to have those type of battles...it's dang hard to beat a good team 3x in the same season.

Derrick has great potential and has streaked that during this season. He's going to get his legs and brain to match up some games...just didn't tonight because he truly deserved to foul out.
We led the nation for a chunk of this year because Alec was getting calls against him as well as Shane. In games where we aren't leading the FT battle we have had trouble....period. Those games have had rebound lapses too. My observation is that aggression gets both of those categories humming.
