Title: 1/18 - Youngstown State @ the Beeghly Center
Post by: talksalot on January 16, 2016, 11:05:42 PM
The Guins have victories this year over two teams with winning records:  Oakland on "The Tip In" game; and their 103-93 win over GBay last weekend.... They are 2-8 in their last 10 D1 games, losing to American #338, Purdue #29, Michigan #38, Notre Dame #39, Detroit #169, Milwaukee #163, Northern Ky #320 (by 20) and to Wright State #161 by 36

Statistically speaking and with how well we have done in HL play so far, this SHOULD be another double digit win, but this game has me slightly concerned for a couple reasons. Here's some food for thought...

1. With the intensity of the last four games and the quick turn around to the long road trip to Youngstown, I can certainly see us not looking as sharp as our more recent games.
2. In 2014, they only lost to us by 3 in Ohio and in our great 2013 year, they handily beat us at the Beeghly Center, so they can certainly be competitive. And with their surprising wins over Oakland and Green Bay, I can see them stepping up to play us.
3. Will we look ahead? The game at Wright State on Friday will be HL #1 vs. #2 and WSU is a team that even I feel like I have overlooked until now, so we may need to prepare a bit extra for them and their more defensive style compared to the Michigan and Wisconsin schools. So will we take YSU for granted now that we have built some sense of a cushion in the HL standings? I can see it.

Anyway, on another note, I will be making the trip over to Youngstown from Cleveland to see the Beeghly Center for the first time. Should be an interesting experience! GO VALPO!  :)

With the way Youngstown can sometimes shoot hot as they did against Oakland at the O'rena and at home against Green Bay there is no way the Crusaders can look ahead to Wright State in Dayton on Friday. Valpo must take the sometimes streaky YSU Penguins seriously or a Ball State could happen to Valpo again. Oakland and Green Bay are still probably wondering why they couldn't beat YSU.

Actually the Beeghly Center is quite nice.   Parking close by and lots of security around.  The only challenge I have ever experienced is the weather on the drive over and the 9 hour total drive time to see a game.  Did it before and would do it again if the game weren't on a Monday night.

Forget about looking ahead against YSU...it's not going to happen.  The schedule actually permits plenty of time for Valpo to prepare and rest for WSU (and NKU) after the YSU game.  I would imagine that they'll travel to Dayton the day after YSU for the travel partnered swing on this road trip, so there will be time.  Fatigue against YSU though is a concern.

I thought the NCAA limited the number of days a team can be out of the "classroom".  Unless this rule has been relaxed I'd bet the team will travel back to Valpo Monday night and head to Dayton on Thursday night

Isn't CSU travel partners with ysu?  This doesn't make sense schedule wise.  And therefore much more expensive.  Somebody please explain.

Coach Gore mentioned on the radio post game interview that the team would be flying out to Youngstown from Porter County Airport just after noon today and returning after the game Mon. night.

From personal experience nothing is easier than flying out of PCA. 5 min drive over, get out of your car, walk on the plane and go. No long ride to the airport, no early arrival needed, no security checks, no dealing with other travelers, nothing. It makes the YSU trip about as easy as going to UIC.

I am not familiar with a flight out of PCA except for a charter.   Are there flight options for the general public?

There is no commercial service out of Porter County - just private planes, company jets and charters. Someone used to run an air shuttle service to O'Hare and Midway. I don't know if they still do that or not.

On WSU broadcast last night, they said Bobby Hayne is out with a broken foot.  He's been tough on us.  Our defense should help us win.  We'll be there and it's always cold and snowy for this game.  Beware the slushee penguin! Usually rough and refs are no friends there.

He has been out for the last few weeks and they seem to be a different and more dangerous team without him.  ???  Speculation on the Oakland board was that this is a case of less is more and that Slocum's creative coaching ability is also improved by Haynes absence.

I look for our defense to show up, play mostly man, and hold them in check for a hard fought win.

"Slocum" and "coaching ability" shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

The real question should be why does Slocum still have a job at YSU after 11 years of mediocrity?

I never root for someone to get fired, but I am really curious to know what does he tell the AD and the administration year after year after year. The guy must be a genius...just not in coaching.

I think it largely has to do with YSU being a football school. Basketball absolutely plays second fiddle. Short of scandal or winless season, his job security is higher than one might think.

Personally, I think a lot of people underrate Slocum as a coach. Just three seasons ago, YSU had back-to-back winning seasons, kicking (HL champion) Valpo's *** at the Beeghly both years. He also got Kendrick Perry, Damian Eargle, and Bobby Hain to come from warmer climes to the recruiting hellhole that is Youngstown, Ohio, and just might be making something out of nothing with this year's team.

There are gamblers out there who will take Valpo by 17?  I suppose you're looking for even odds... Half the time?  Maybe...

Part 1:  Bobby Hain      That's the players name, I've seen his name spelled a few ways...and yes, he's been a thorn

What I like about this game is Valpo's ability to key on the best player on the other team and keep that player from getting his points.  YSU goes where Morse takes them.  He's averaging 26ppg in HL play.  Donlon figured it out, held him to 18... and WSU wins by 30-something.    Valpo can do the same.

from their game notes:... The Starting Line (up?)... Donlan and Santiago are the only two to start every game.
Player Ht. Wt. Yr. Hometown PPG RPG Other
G 23 Francisco Santiago 6-1 160 So. Cleveland, Ohio 7.7 4.0 80 assts
G 24 Cameron Morse 6-2 180 So. Flint, Mich. 18.7 2.5 31 steals
G 25 Jordan Andrews 6-5 180 Fr. LaPlace, La. 6.4 2.8 25 3's
F 0 Matt Donlan 6-7 190 Jr. Melbourne, Australia 13.4 4.5 55 3's
C 5 Sidney Umude 6-7 205 So. San Antonio, Texas 7.6 3.6 10 blks

Kaufman (7' Junior)  has played in 16 games, averaging 17 min/game... shooting 54% from the line.
Nickels (6'9 Freshman) has played in 10 games, averaging 13min /game

• The Youngstown State men's basketball team returns home to host first-place Valparaiso, Monday, Jan. 18, at the Beeghly Center.
• Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and is on 570 AM WKBN, ESPN3, and the WatchESPN app.
• This is the Penguins' third game in five days.  (Valpo, too!)  • The Penguins are coming off an 81-45 loss to Wright State on Jan. 16.
• Sophomore Cameron Morse scored a game high 18 points to lead the Penguins.
• Morse recorded his 15th double-figure scoring performance and scored at least 18 points for the seventh straight game.
• This is the 41st meeting between Youngstown State and Valparaiso in a series that started in 1989.
• The Crusaders own a 31-9 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last five contests.
• Valparaiso won the last meeting, 77-62, at the Beeghly Center.
• The last time YSU defeated the Crusaders was in 2013, 80-68, at the Beeghly Center.
• Head Coach Jerry Slocum has 706 career wins and became the 38th head coach in NCAA history
to reach 700 wins. He ranks 37th with 706 career wins and ranks eighth among active NCAA Division I coaches with 706 wins.
• Junior Matt Donlan leads the Horizon League with a .478 3-point percentage and is tied for second with 2.9 3-pointers made per game.
• Morse leads the Horizon League with 26.0 points per game in league games and is second overall with 18.7 points per game.
• Sophomore Francisco Santiago ranks third in the league with 4.2 assists per game.

Overall: Valpo leads, 31-9
In Youngstown: Valpo leads, 10-8
In Valparaiso: Valpo leads, 20-1
Neutral Sites: Valpo leads, 1-0
Current Streak: YSU, L5
Last Meeting: YSU lost, 77-62, on Jan. 20, 2015
Slocum vs. Valpo, 2-15

A WIN WOULD
• Give Youngstown State its 10th win over Valparaiso.
• Mark YSU's fi rst win over the Crusaders since
2013.
• Snap a fi ve-game losing streak to the Crusaders.
• Mark Jerry Slocum's 707th career win and his
126th at Youngstown State.
• Mark Jerry Slocum's third win over Valparaiso.
• Mark the 1,060th victory in program history.

and from the Wright State recap of their game....
====================================
Short-handed: Youngstown State's Bobby Hain, a 6-10, 240-pound forward, sat out again with a foot injury and hasn't played since Dec. 21. He was a preseason second-team all-league pick.

Starting forward Sidney Umude, averaging 8.1 points, suffered an ankle injury less than two minutes into the game and didn't return.
====================================

all the write-ups I can find on Hain is the injury would keep him side-lined for 4-8 weeks...he's been out since December 21.

Anyone have any idea what this costs?  For one person?  For a traveling party of, what, 20?  I don't even know where to start.  Could it be as little as $10,000 for the traveling party?  As much as $50,000? More?

I don't know if the League is paying for this? or is Valpo making the decision to fly?

with today's weather conditions, not sure driving would have been a fun thing to do; and, the long drive home on Monday night would not be a good idea for classes on Tuesday.

FYI. Per his tweet, former Valpo assistant coach Chris Sparks is part of broadcasting team covering Valpo v. YSU on ESPN3. Should be interesting. If I recall right, he was the lead recruiter for Valpo with Ryan Broekoff?
Coach Sparks tweet as follows.
I will be broadcasting the Valpo v Youngstown State game Monday at 7pm Eastern on @ESPN3 @HLHoops

Was there something about the league footing the bill for one a year, something like that?  Related perhaps to Butler's (nearly extinct?) NCAA money?

Very hazy memories here...

To be clear, whether this is coming from VU Athletics funds, or from the League, I'm not saying it's a bad investment necessarily, or a waste of money, etc.  It could well be prudent, or certainly comfortable and plausibly justified, etc.

It depends on the size of the aircraft of course, but I'm guessing between $5,000 and $10,000 per flight hour for something large enough for the team, coaches, training staff, broadcasters, etc. I'm not sure exactly how many would travel, but a total cost of $20-25K round trip might get you in the ballpark. Of course, if 20 people flew commercial at a cost of $500 per ticket (not that it would be possible between Valpo and YSU), that is $10K right there.

$243 Round Trip on Delta from Ohare (or Midway) to Akron (Charter went to Youngstown Airport)  with a layover in Detroit.... with baggage restrictions.... and no returning flights after 5:45pm...and it's 68 miles from Youngstown.

Allegiant Air does fly to Youngstown, twice a week...so you could go from South Bend to St.Pete and then up to Youngstown... but it takes about a week for the round-trip due to the schedules.

Amtrak's Capitol Limited out of South Bend (9:05pm) for $100 stops in Alliance Ohio at 3:05am... which is only 38 miles from Youngstown....

Now, aren't you glad you asked?

The thing to remember is the restrictions the NCAA imposed last  year or the year before that really limits the number of days you can be on the road as relates to game days.  Realistically a bus trip back would get the team into Valpo about 1AM with class in the am.   The trip to Dayton is on Friday which means that travel time back is not as critical.  I do recognize the expense related to air travel and one of the early benefits of the Horizon League is the 2 for 1 pairing we got for road trips.  With changes in the league and NCAA restrictions it is really a necessity vs a luxury.  still...I have memories of Evansville back in the back of my mind.

I believe either the Horizon league or NCAA, not sure which, covers a good chunk (60-70%) of the cost with the team being responsible for the rest.

again, why isn't this game played with their travel partner?

I think it has to do with CSU playing a number of games, including the Valpo one, at the Quicken Loans Arena instead of the Wolstein Center. My guess is that the Cavs' schedule (or other things happening at the Q) made the regular Thursday/Saturday or Friday/Sunday pairing impossible (perhaps also with other things going on at Wolstein), so splitting it up made the most sense to allow the game on the Cavs' floor. But that's just an educated guess.

We didn't start conference games until January.  I am guessing their are not enough weekends to go a full travel partner schedule and still have the conference tournament the first weekend in March.  Just a guess, I didn't look it up.  I am guessing that every team has at least one week like this in their schedule.

I also think it has to do with the fact that we don't have a logical travel partner for UIC, hence those games and our Youngstown and Cleveland road games don't have a "partner."  Like SanityLost, I haven't checked the schedules of other teams, but I presume that have a similar situation with one or two teams.  Clearly UIC-Valpo, Detroit-Oakland, Milwaukee-Green Bay are good geographical partners, but when those teams play each other, finding a logical "partner" for that weekend without scrambling the schedule for everyone is not as easy.

UIC and Valpo are travel partners. Period. There's not enough weekends to have every team use travel partners for every game. Thus, there's a couple of weekday games that don't use the travel partners. For example NKU travels to Oakland on Tuesday, comes home for UIC/Valpo, and then goes back to Detroit to play UDM.

I believe either the Horizon league or NCAA, not sure which, covers a good chunk (60-70%) of the cost with the team being responsible for the rest.
It was rumored that the Horizon provided teams 1 flight a year.

More speculation on my part, but I think that was from using Butler's cut of the NCAA tournament money they did not receive for leaving the league.

so Valpo/YST and UIC/CSU play tonight... the "3-games-in-5-days" scenario...

Wright State is playing UDM tonight...for the first of two times they have that same schedule fluke
Wright State:  2/11 @ UIC, 2/13 @ Valpo and 2/15 Home to Oakland

Milwaukee's turn:  2/11 @ Oakland 2/13 @ Detroit 2/15 @ Green Bay
Green Bay's turn:  2/11 @ Detroit 2/13 @ Oakland 2/15 home to Milwaukee
Oakland's turn:  2/11 Home to Milwaukee, 2/13 Home to Green Bay 2/15 @ Wright State

Detroit 2/11 Home to Green Bay 2/13 Home to Milwaukee and 2/16 @ Northern Kentucky (one extra day)
Northern Ky's turn:  2/11 @ Valpo, 2/13 @ UIC ... and 2/16 home to UDM (one extra day)

(I'm guessing something is going on 2/15 in the Northern Kentucky arena so they pushed that back a day)

The RPI was at 22 before Nolan posted the final...

Stat Line on that game...

The Man in the Middle with another DoubleDouble...

18-19 Free Throws... E Vic gets to carry all the luggage to the plane.

Bench Points:  53-19
2nd Chance points: 23-3

Rebounds:
Valpo: 21 offense + 30 defense = 51 total rebounds
Young: 4  offense + 16 defense = 20 total rebounds

I missed the fact that the game started at 6 and not 7 so missed Alec Peters completely!  Wow!  Inspite of the lengthy garbage time we win by 31 on the road.  That has got to get some attention.  The rebounding margins are world class.  Alec had 18 points in 14 minutes.  Just Wow...

Was wondering this also. We took him out after the elbow to his head, and we didn't see him the rest of the game. Hoping it was just precautionary, since we were up 20+ at the time. He looked just fine and animated on the bench.

Speaking of the bench, it was nice that the starters were so into the game after taken out. The bench has been supportive all year, despite some of the players having their minutes cut considerably over the past couple years.

It was also nice seeing Davidson play center and hilariously calling for entry passes into the post. Guy is a gamer.

Another dominating performance...8 guys had more minutes than Alec who had 14!  Maybe the guy who predicted that we would win the league by 7 games will be correct!   Another blown game by that coaching genius Ray McC as Detroit loses at WSU.  That Detroit situation is really bad as you can read it on the faces of the players at every time out.  I wonder how long the coach will survive.

Nice to see D. Walker find his 3 point stroke about the time T. Walker seems to be struggling a bit from 3.  E Vic seems to still be a step slower guarding quicker guards than he was last year. Hope he gets that back as the season goes on and he gets back into playing shape.  The depth and unselfish play of this team is amazing.  Nice performance.

His 4 of 5 shooting raises his 3 point average to 33.9%. That gives me some hope that I might still get one of the "over-under" questions answered correctly. I took him for over 38% and that was looking really stupid until just recently.

Yes, Darien has been steadily improving over the last few conference games.  His release point is back to where it was last year.  He was releasing the ball too late as he came down, which led to some abysmal looking shots off the backboard and well short of the rim.  He looks a lot more smooth when he is shooting, so maybe he figured out that he was holding onto it too long.  This is a great sign heading into the halfway point of conference.

Youngstown... didn't rebound very hard.  And we, as usual, often had four guys rebounding.

Rebounding margin? 51-20.  +31.  Could it be a Valpo record?

On our misses, they rebounded 16 of them.  We rebounded 21.

Not sure anybody keeps track of single game records like that...

The Horizon League does keep a _fairly_ extensive record book.

Season average record scoring margin in league games? 13.2.  Butler 2009-10.  We'll see...

Season average record rebounding margin in league games?  +11.1, a Loyola team in the 80's.  So far we're at +18.  _Average_.  Over six league games.

Not trying to quell the enthusiasm, but remember that YSU has some serious injury issues.

I think Chris Sparks had a lot of praise for VU and felt he needed to balance out his commentary by staying upbeat in regards to YSU. I don't really blame him for that probably required performance.

Chris Sparks really praised the performance of the Freshmen on the YSU team and talked about their strong potential for the future.  He was overly enthusiastic about Slocum.  Hard not find a lot to talk about the Crusaders given the fact that we played at least the last 7 min with mostly bench players who usually enter the game in the closing minutes....and we still maintaned the lead.

Hard to be too critical about last night's game - it was good to have so many players contribute and it was a good win.

However, Carter, T. Walker and Skara combined to go 0-9 from 3 point range. That was balanced by the hot shooting from Peters and D. Walker, but in the long run that a major issue.

Aaron gives some historical context on the rebounding in the Wright State game notes

Quote
- Valpo out-rebounded YSU 51-20 and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds versus
the Penguins' 16 defensive boards.
- The +31 edge on the glass was the largest by the Crusaders against a D-I team
in at least two decades, and was the largest in any game since Valpo was +38
against Purdue North Central on Nov. 18, 2010.

and

Quote
- Combined with their stellar defense has been a tremendous effort on the glass
this season for the Crusaders, as Valpo currently ranks 15th nationally with a
+9.5 rebound margin.
- Valpo's +31 advantage at Youngstown State was its best against a Division I
opponent in at least two decades.
- The Crusaders have been at least +8 on the boards in all six Horizon League
games, including a double-fi gure advantage four times.
- In league play to date, Valpo owns an average edge on the boards of +18, while
Vashil Fernandez (10.7 rpg) and Alec Peters (9.8 rpg) rank 1-2 in the league in
rebounding in league-only action.

I'm sure we can't maintain a +18 average.  But, I do wonder if the average will be historic.  Not the easiest numbers to come by...

And I can't resist quoting a defense stat as well

Quote
- Valpo's scoring defense (60.0 ppg) ranks fourth nationally, while its field goal
percentage defense (37.1%) is good for sixth in the nation
