Inspired by the guys at MarchArchPod, I took a dive into the depths of MVC mediocrity in an attempt to dig up the single worst Valley basketball team this millennium. What was my conclusion? Click below, dear reader, to find out.https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/quick-hitter-worst-mvc-team-this-millennium

I'm not sure where you are getting the formatting from in your posts, but for some reason you are setting the font size to 3px. I edited the latest post to make it legible.

"Because he's black"? Are you kidding me? It's bad enough that thought entered your head. Doubly bad you thought it worthy of putting on here.

I agree they'll keep him, but they'll keep him because he wins and he's an alum. This is the kind of s*** that parents of recruits read on our board and say "No thanks".

To your point, this is a raindrop in an ocean compared to the potential damage caused to the program by the incessant trashing of our head coach by people on this very same board - calling for his resignation, praying for someone to buyout his contract, acting like the world came to an end when we found out his contract goes through 2025, comparing him unfavorably to every other coach in the league by name, labeling his offensive and defensive schemes as lacking creativity, accusing him of not knowing how to coach players up, blaming every player failure on the coach, questioning his starting and substitution patterns, accusing him of running players off, he coddles his favorites, he's too easy, he's not a player's coach, we should have done a national search, he's never been a head coach before albeit there are tons of successful first time head coaches in D-1 over the years, blaming him because we can't win when we have injured players, didn't he ever hear of "next man up" and other grade school-level cliches, even blaming him for having so many injured players every year, endless blah, blah, blah.

How ironic is it that two of Lottich's biggest trashers (you know who you are) are on record a few posts up feigning shock that someone would dare say something that might offend or alienate an outsider. Give me a freaking break. The hypocricy is absolutely mind blowing. Finally, let me make something perfectly clear. I'm glad politics has been removed from the board. I'm probably as guilty of abusing it an anyone on the board. I'm glad the tempation has been removed. I also fully agree that the Howard postgame incident for totally divisive and could be hurtful to many people. Having said that, the destructive nonsense on this board doesn't stop there, not by a longshot. In fact, it only starts there. This would be the perfect time for our resident coach and player trashers to stop posting poison for our recruits and potential recruits and their families to read.

Not to sidetrack this thread any further, but I do want to acknowledge a very good point here.

This isn't just about politics. Now is a perfect time for all of us to reflect and think about how we interact with each other, and how we can respectfully comment on the various topics discussed here. We can disagree or voice displeasure or what have you while maintaining a respectful and constructive tone.

We should always be mindful of the open and public nature of this forum. We should think about who may read it, and what they may take away from it. The last thing ANY of us want is to be perceived negatively, or to cast our school, and our support for Valpo in a negative light.

Now back to the topic...

Just in case you need a refresher, here are our forum posting guidelines:

Quote from: valpo04 on June 01, 2011, 06:19:52 AMWhen posting in this forum, you should keep in mind the following:

1. Get Educated. Read the Terms of Service for this website. While most sites will have similar rules, there can be key differences from community to community, so it's a good idea to acquaint yourself with what is allowed and what is not.

2. Read Before Participating. It's best to browse a message board for a while before you post your first message. Read a couple week's worth of messages the first time you visit a board, and then read new messages for another couple of days. You'll see what topics are hot and which are cold, you'll get to know some of the key participants, and you'll become familiar with the demeanor of the board.

3. Communicate Clearly. Write clearly when you compose a message. Preview and review your message carefully before clicking Post. Typos can be confusing. Remember, if your message can be misunderstood, it will be.

4. Refrain from using ALL CAPS. Typing in all capital letters is frowned upon; it's the equivalent of screaming. It's considered an aggressive way to post and it doesn't come off as being very friendly. It also makes your message more difficult to read. Moderators often delete topics or posts that use ALL CAPS.

5. Utilize Formatting Codes and Smilies. Since tone can be difficult to convey simply using the written word, most forums are equipped with coding options (such as HTML and BB Code) and smileys. Using these options can help clarify what you are saying. Italicizing a word may help the reader understand what you are stressing. Putting a winking smiley in your message will help show you are just kidding or teasing and help avoid a person taking a comment personally.

6. Correction and Retraction. If you realize that you made a mistake in a previous message, please add a new message acknowledging the mistake and correcting it promptly. You will find most people are understanding of mistakes if they are dealt with immediately.

7. Be Respectful, Kind and Honest. Don't issue personal attacks, use profanity, or post threatening, abusive, harassing, or otherwise offensive language or images. Keep your messages appropriate and courteous at all times. Please disagree with other opinions respectfully. If you are unsure if something is inappropriate, ask yourself these questions: Would you say it to the person if she were standing right in front of you? Would you say it to your best friend or loved one? Are you calling someone names? How would you feel and react if faced with the same message from someone else? If it would anger or upset you, you might consider re-framing your thoughts in a less objectionable tone.

8. Personal Communication. Personal messages, and especially critical comments, are more appropriate when sent directly and privately. Many forums have a private messaging feature that can be utilized for this purpose. If not, an e-mail to the individual is also an acceptable option.

9. Problems with Another Poster. If you find yourself having a problem with another poster, it is poor form to voice your concerns on the forum. It is much better to contact the moderator or webmaster privately through email or private-message.  If all else fails, consider using the "ignore poster" feature.

10. This is a Family-Friendly Site. Because of the nature of the internet, you cannot be sure who may be reading your post. Try to use only appropriate language in your post.

11. Trolls. Ignore "trolls." Some people get a thrill from posting flames (really obnoxious messages) just to get a rise out of others. The best way to make them go away is to ignore them; they'll get bored and go somewhere else.

12. Be Careful When Posting Personal Information. Be careful about including private information about yourself, such as phone numbers and street addresses. It's not only a personal risk to you, but can also make other members of a community feel uncomfortable or wary. If you must share information of that nature, it should be sent by e-mail or private message.

13. Be Kind to Newcomers a/k/a Noobs. Writing a first topic on a forum can be daunting, so please be friendly and welcoming. Also, while trolls are a reality, and sometimes members may feel apprehensive about opening up to those they don't know, remember that everyone was a "newbie" at one time or another. It is best to extend the benefit of the doubt to guests and new members.

14. Respecting the Forum. Most Message Boards and Forums are provided as a service to the internet community. As a result, posting on forums should be viewed as a privilege, not a right. You would not consider acting hostile or inappropriately in a restaurant or other "public" location, and therefore you should not expect the right to do so on a forum.

15. Respecting the Moderators and Admins. Just as the world needs law enforcement to help keep the peace, Message Boards often employ moderators to help enforce the rules and keep things running smoothly. Most do so on a voluntary basis. While you may not agree with them, moderators are there for the general better of the community, and should be afforded respect and courtesy. If you have a problem with a moderator, you should contact the webmaster privately through email or private-message.

16. Freedom of Speech. The U.S. Bill of Rights allows citizens the right to free speech in a public forum without limitations imposed by the State/Government. Most message boards are not actually public forums, but rather private forums open to the public. While you will find most communities allow free and open discussion, private communities have a right to limit what is discussed and how it is discussed, as well as defining what is appropriate behavior for their forums. Freedom of speech is not the right to say something anywhere you want, but the right to say it somewhere. Freedom of Speech is the right to find another forum where you can speak your mind, or the right to start your own community in which to discuss what you wish. If you do not like the rules of a particular community, it is best if you find another which is more to your comfort level.

17. Remember the Golden Rule. It is very easy to misinterpret a person's word when you cannot see them and/or hear their tone, so please keep in mind the Golden Rule of Message Board Etiquette: It's not just what you say, it's how you say it.

Valpo Basketball / Please Read: Some changes to the forum
February 22, 2022, 06:45:39 AM
After much thought, I have decided to make some changes effective immediately. The first is a minor restructuring of the structure and layout, to help with navigation and prioritization of topics. The second is a blanket "no politics" rule. As hopeful as I was, the political discourse here is no better than anywhere else, and does not strengthen our community. In fact, it has divided and stifled discussion, including outside of the "Off Topic" board. That is not what this site is for. There are plenty of other avenues to share your political beliefs. Starting today, this forum is not one of them.

The purpose of this forum is to bring fans of Valparaiso University together, and provide a place to discuss Valpo sports, the school, and other topics in a constructive and congenial manner. It is time to take steps to return to that purpose and make this a welcoming, non-combative place for all who wish to participate.

I will be removing all of the political posts from the Off Topic board, and will heavily moderate the conversations there (and elsewhere) to ensure that this remains a politics free, and welcoming place for all.

I agree he will not be fired but he should be already gone.  However, because of a number of factors, he will continue as the head coach.  Disgusting!

Howard is an angry black man with a chip on his shoulders. He's behaved like a thug before. This is not his first instance. Howard threatened Maryland coach Mark Turgeon before he was ejected during a game last year. No action was taken. He thinks he can say and do anything he wants without any consequences. He's right. They will not do what should be done. Fire him. Oh, but he wins games.
Ha! If a white coach had threatened the life of a black coach and a few months later slapped a black coach in a handshake line, many of you guilty white liberals (not you 64) would be howling racism and demanding that he be fired. But no, we can't hold a black man to the same standard. It is taboo to criticize any black man for bad behavior. Spare me the faux outrage for having the audacity of criticizing a black man who obviously has anger issues and is so arrogant that he thinks he can slap another coach and thinks he doesn't have to exercise self-control; thinking because he is black, he's entitled to act in ways that would get any other human being fired.

Ok that's enough. A lot of insinuation, accusation, and racial overtones that are not backed by any fact.

Quotehe thinks he can slap another coach and thinks he doesn't have to exercise self-control; thinking because he is black, he's entitled to act in ways that would get any other human being fired.

You have no clue what he thinks, so stop.

And all of this, without even knowing what his consequences will be...

In the late 90's and early 2000's, I subscribed (paid) to a newspaper that was mailed to me that had a hyper focus on VU athletics. From what I remember, it was written and published primarily by one guy, Dick Harlan. He was totally independent from the local media and the university, just a big Valpo booster. His son is still in the area and has been a high school volleyball coach since a short stint of writing about local athletics in the Times. Maybe Paul can do a hybrid approach for all Valpo Athletics with a focus on Men's Basketball? He could produce a weekly or monthly print newsletter, on-line daily articles, and his periodic podcast to cover all bases.  It could be paid for via subscriber payments and local businesses. He did say, "Covering college athletics is all I've ever wanted to do", so let's see how resourceful he is. Anybody here willing to provide some seed money?

If there is interest in doing something like this, we certainly already have the infrastructure on this site to do it.

When I created this site, I wanted a blog/article component and built it on a Wordpress platform to provide the needed backend to do it. We used to have some activity in the past: https://www.valpofanzone.com/blog/

I haven't done much to maintain it since there hasn't been any demand, but I can certainly update and modify it.

Yes, they look great and should be an example for the VU administration to adopt as well. Thanks valpo04 and Bryan! (Can we get rid of the lighthouse now?)

Done! (at least on our banner)  :)

The shield symbol is already tied and recognizable to Valpo.  Just keep the symbol and dump the nickname.  Save some considerable cash doing this also.

I agree some of them sound like WNBA names or car brands.

It still boggles the mind that the (interim) leader of this university supported this boondoggle during a financial calamity. Just call it children's hour at Valpo U.  BTW, with rare exception women are terrible business leaders - way too emotional and insecure.

A boondoggle is a project that is considered a waste of both time and money, yet is often continued due to extraneous policy or political motivations. Wikipedia

Say what you want about the mascot, the choices, or the process, but cut out the sexism.

The Ramblers are 20-point favorites for Valpo/Loyola 2.0. This is the biggest underdog spread I can recall against a conference opponent, going all the way back to our Mid Con days.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have almost no glass-half-full optimism about this one.

If you are going to continue to start the game threads in an effort to *start* using "Crusaders," can you at least flip the icon to game thread? Thanks.

Georgia reports lowest number of COVID patients in a month

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/georgia-reports-lowest-number-covid-patients-in-a-month

Georgia opened up before anyone else. Wasn't this predicted to be an unmitigated disaster?  Even President Trump was mad at their Governor. As someone who is anxious to see our country return to some sense of normalcy sooner rather than later, this is good news. But how will the moral narcissists react?

Moral narcissist: A liberal who projects moral superiority to discredit or dismiss conservative views. Moral narcissism is self-aggrandizing. It requires no personal evidence of adherence to high moral standards on the part of the claimant. It is pretense.

Serious question...Why do you feel the need to add the second paragraph? Do you find that making sweeping generalizations, or attacking characterizations and misrepresentations makes for a better discourse or quality of discussion and debate? I don't.

I agree with being smart while letting businesses open.  And imo Sweden has done its population a great service by not putting it in lockdown and causing panic (the same panic that prevents people who have had heart attacks from going to the hospital to get treatments that would've save their lives and a myriad of other health problems).

So please do not take this the wrong way but it was my understanding that we won't see the results of this opening for between 2 to 4 weeks when any current infections peek out.

Sweden has a death rate of about 100 more per million than us, and it is significantly higher than its Scandinavian neighbors. I'm not sure that's doing their population a great service.

Just found out this afternoon that one of my friends was diagnosed with Covid-19 via TeleMed. She could not get a doctors appointment and was directed to use the Parkview Hospital TeleMed service. She had actually been sent to the ER about 8 days ago by her doctor.  She was tested for the flu and told that is what she probably had. Was told today the flu test came back negative and that all her symptoms match Covid-19 and that is most likely what she has but that they would not test her unless she was admitted to the hospital, but that she should not come in unless it was an emergency. She was then prescribed Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin... we all know what that means.  :-X

This just confirms the suspicions that the numbers for this outbreak are way off. My wife is a biochemist and chair of the Life Science Department at one of the local colleges and she has been saying the same thing for weeks. My daughter is on the first response team at Children's National Hospital and they are seeing the first pediatric patients coming in now.  Starting to get real now for the wife and I.

Sorry to hear that, FW. I think it's inevitable that we all will start to have similar stories, unfortunately. Best wishes to your family and my thoughts are with your daughter as she prepares for what will likely be a very trying time.

I wanted to create a thread where we can share ideas, memes, stories, etc. to help us get through these isolating times. Let's keep it light; leave the politics, policies, and statistics out. As Jimmy Buffett once said "If we couldn't laugh we would all go insane."

I'll start...

I've been teleworking since Thursday, March 12. My company was proactive and ran a test to ensure our infrastructure could support it. We are on mandatory telework until April 10th (at least) and schools have been closed since March 16 and will be until the end of this week (at least).

My family and I have been isolating as best as we can. There's lots of Disney+ streaming, and online educational games, but we try to get the girls outside each day to play and get some exercise since sports are canceled as well. It is a challenge to keep them 6 feet away from their friends, but we do our best. Me and my wife have been binging Schitt's Creek on Netflix, and attending "virtual happy hours" with the extended family via Zoom.

We've been eating every meal at home, but last night to break the monotony (and to support a local business), we did order delivery - I'm starting to feel bad for my dishwasher!

All in all, we are getting by and doing fine. We certainly know others have it a lot worse than us. To amuse myself, and since I am not going into the office, I decided to grow a beard. It also amuses my girls, but my wife hates it :-)

Between that and needing a haircut, it's going to be interesting look  ;)

Speaking of haircuts, here's a funny tweet I saw yesterday...
