I thought some of you alumni might get a kick out of seeing this guide book from 1971.

I actually remember having this book at our house.

I hope the conservative media that says to be cautious about getting a Covid vaccine are sued by families who lose members because those family members don't get vaccinated. That is a crime.

"Put bluntly, the league is surely smitten with UTA geographic location. While the addition of a Texas school could be burdensome for the travel costs of some of the other MVC schools, Arlington would bring a significant new market to the conference. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country, so the MVC would be tapping into an enormous new market. UTA would also be the conference's first Texas school, which could be meaningful for establishing recruiting pipelines in a state that is plush with talent."

Please don't shoot the messenger. If the MVC is truly looking at UTA then Valpo must acknowledge the true possibility of it happening whether we, as Valpo fans, like it or not.

It will be a month later but the recent uprising at the St Louis City Justice Center (also known as the St Louis City Jail) https://www.google.com/maps/@38.626103,-90.1989457,3a,75y,115.65h,95.3t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sO2VMgTUkyMN5xWaa3x_aEw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192
is just a couple blocks from the Enterprise Center. You may remember walking by the Thomas Eagleton US Court House which is next door to the Justice Center if you have attended Arch Madness before. The Justice Center is directly across the street from (Tucker Blvd./12th) from the old German style City Hall, modeled after the Rathaus (city hall) of Münster, Germany.

I got this from my cousin's Facebook page:

Memories of Scottie Ward:

During my twenty years of coaching basketball at Valpo High I had the privilege of knowing hundreds of deserving student athletes.  Fortunately, most of my former players came from homes of at least average, or above, family income.  The thing I admired most was I cannot name one who was spoiled by the financial stability of their family.

From that standpoint, the late Scottie Ward was an exception.  His Mama was a single mother and she worked hard to support her family of four children and Scottie always expressed his love for her.  He had her picture by his bed and on his last days on earth, he kissed per picture every morning.

Be that as it may, Scottie had a difficult early life. As a lad, Scottie sat on the curb and waited for Bob Johnson, who delivered milk and gave Scottie a bottle of chocolate milk each morning.  Delmar Graham,  intentionally left his pie-truck door open as he delivered a pie across the street, so Scottie could remove his favorite pie from the truck.  George Neely of Neeley's Men's Clothing Store made sure Scottie always look spiffy in new attire.

So Scottie belonged to the Community and he represented them well .  Everyone loved Scottie Ward.

Make no mistake, he was mischievous.  It was not unusual for students to ask me to get their money back that they loaned Scottie.  It seems he would say to them "if you loan me a quarter, I will pay you back when my Dad comes home" and they would hand him a quarter -  only to learn later that his Dad deserted the family when Scottie was three years old. Some of them lost fifty cents.

On the basketball floor, he caused me great concern.  His competitive spirit was such that he backed down from no one.  One night we were playing Gary Froebel and they had a huge center named Darryl White.  The night before I had watched White in a fight as he swung and broke the nose of Beshinsky in a game at Michigan City.  I warned our players to just play basketball and not get involved in any physical activity.  Late in the game Scottie and White both came down with a shared rebound.  White jerked the ball away and shoved Scottie to the floor.  I turned to Coach Ciciora and said "Call the ambulance" because I knew what was about to happen.  Scottie ran at White and stuck his chest up against White's belt buckle and started yelling at him - -  the referee saved his life.  I called time out and said "Scottie, White is going to kill you"  His reply was "Coach, no one is going to shove me around"

But Scottie was not an anomaly on that team, it was a combination of fierce competitors.  Dale Gott, Butch Jones, Chuck Kriston, Cecil White, and Scottie reversed the fortunes of Viking Basketball.  Previously, the school had players of equal ability  but didn't have the collection of competitors that the mentioned players possessed.

After college, Scottie became an insurance salesman in Columbia, South Carolina.  When he passed away, be had just retired as owner of a large insurance office.

When I came to Valparaiso I found, not only the players, but the entire student body were afraid of playing Chesterton and Portage.  Midway through my third season,   I moved them to the varsity when they were Sophomores and something magic happened.  It was not my coaching, it was the influx of confident competitors that enabled the Vikes to win the first Sectional in many years.

It was not the greatest team we ever had during my time there, it just happen to come along at the right time - - I am forever indebted to them.

Anybody watching this game? Anybody notice the start was moved 2:00 p.m. EASTERN?

Valpo is very fortunate to be down by only 4 after the early shooting and passing and rebounding display put on by the Bears. Krikke, Clay and Edwards have been hot in their own styles of play though. Barrett has changed the defense by coming up with four 1st half steals.

Sports Talk / GCU vs Gambling in Phoenix
November 26, 2020, 07:57:17 AM
Just watched the GCU vs Grambling MBB game from GCU Arena on ESPN 3 which was played late last night (Wednesday).

One criticism that I think all people wearing masks must pay attention to but especially Bryce Drew and the GCU coaching staff: you must also cover your nose when wearing a mask. It's just as important as wearing the mask over your mouth. For a team that has lost time due to Covid spread this seems vitally important!

Otherwise it was a nice opening win over an opponent that were clearly not near Grand Canyon in talent level. Final score 69-53 Lopes.

https://www.jfklibrary.org/learn/about-jfk/jfk-in-history/november-22-1963-death-of-the-president

Though initially reluctant to pursue civil rights legislation, in 1963 Kennedy proposed a major civil rights bill that ultimately became the Civil Rights Act of 1964. ... Kennedy also established the Peace Corps and promised to land an American on the moon, thereby intensifying the Space Race with the Soviet Union.

Crowds of excited people lined the streets and waved to the Kennedys. The car turned off Main Street at Dealey Plaza around 12:30 p.m. As it was passing the Texas School Book Depository, gunfire suddenly reverberated in the plaza.

Bullets struck the president's neck and head and he slumped over toward Mrs. Kennedy. The governor was shot in his back.

The car sped off to Parkland Memorial Hospital just a few minutes away. But little could be done for the President. A Catholic priest was summoned to administer the last rites, and at 1:00 p.m. John F. Kennedy was pronounced dead. Though seriously wounded, Governor Connally would recover.

The president's body was brought to Love Field and placed on Air Force One. Before the plane took off, a grim-faced Lyndon B. Johnson stood in the tight, crowded compartment and took the oath of office, administered by US District Court Judge Sarah Hughes. The brief ceremony took place at 2:38 p.m.

Less than an hour earlier, police had arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, a recently hired employee at the Texas School Book Depository. He was being held for the assassination of President Kennedy and the fatal shooting, shortly afterward, of Patrolman J. D. Tippit on a Dallas street.

On Sunday morning, November 24, Oswald was scheduled to be transferred from police headquarters to the county jail. Viewers across America watching the live television coverage suddenly saw a man aim a pistol and fire at point blank range. The assailant was identified as Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner. Oswald died two hours later at Parkland Hospital.

https://www.daytondailynews.com/sports/dayton-play-missouri-valley-conference-team-for-second-straight-season/Y2HEs5Yy0rnblwD8YMDPkO/amp.html

The Dayton Flyers and Indiana State Sycamores men's basketball programs announced Wednesday they will play Dec. 2 at UD Arena.

It's the second straight season the teams have played. Dayton beat Indiana State 86-81 in the season opener last season at UD Arena. That was the first matchup between the programs. Indiana State finished 18-12 last season

Dayton is 50-40 against the Missouri Valley Conference. Prior to the game against Indiana State last season, it last played an MVC team in the regular season in 2013 when it lost 81-75 at Illinois State. Illinois State beat Dayton 74-73 a year earlier at UD Arena.

Sports Talk / The Passing of Jerry Sloan
May 25, 2020, 11:05:13 AM
Last week a legend of Southern Illinois, Jerry Sloan, died in Salt Lake City after a long battle with illness.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.indystar.com/amp/1751829001

Having spent time in Valpo, Southern Illinois and Indy I had heard a lot about the life and family of Jerry Sloan. While growing up in Valpo I had watched Sloan play for the Bulls with Norm Van Lear, Bob Love and their coach, Dick Motta. In Southern Illinois I heard about some of the personal stories shared by people about Jerry Sloan coming back to McLeansboro, his hometown, in the off seasons to do charity work. Sloan coached the Bulls for 3 years after his playing years but was let go. After his firing by the Bulls Sloan moved back to McLeansboro so his son Brian could play for Coach David Lee at McLeansboro High School. David Lee had been a high school teammate of Jerry Sloan. That 1983-84 McLeansboro Foxes team went on to win the Illinois class A state championship including being undefeated. Brian Sloan was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in 1984 and went on to play for Bobby Knight at Indiana University. Brian Sloan is now a doctor at Wishard Hospital Emergency room (now called Eskenazi Hospital) in downtown Indy near IUPUI. Brian's two children both play sports at IU in Bloomington.

https://medicine.iu.edu/faculty/12465/sloan-brian

Jerry Sloan was one of 10 children. His father died when Jerry was 4 years old. His mother had to raise 10 children alone on a farm 15 miles south of McLeansboro in Gobbler's Knob. My favorite story about Sloan and his mother is about coming home one night in heavy snow after losing a high school sectional basketball game.

Lee said Sloan's mother, Jane, was a tough customer as well. After McLeansboro lost to Mount Vernon in the single-class sectional one year, the bus that Lee's father, drove got stuck in the snow so David ended up staying over at Sloan's house.

"She asked the next morning how we did and Jerry said, 'Oh, we lost.' She said, 'You must have not worked hard enough,''' Lee recalled.

In 2007 while visiting my son in Mount Vernon, IL I noticed a story about Sloan, then coaching the Jazz, who came back to the Rend Lake Resort, about 10 miles south of Mount Vernon, and held a charity event in the name of his wife, Bobbye Sloan, who died in 2004.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/thesouthern.com/news/local/rend-lake-resort-hosting-jerry-sloan-fundraiser/article_02c7afee-d51f-541b-9b9b-66d787387e83.amp.html

Something else I noticed after rereading the story in the Southern Illinoisan newspaper from 2007 was who wrote the story. Becky Malkovich, was a well known writer in Southern Illinois, who died of cancer in 2014. Becky was the sister of actor John Malkovich, who grew up in Benton, IL.

https://www.franklincounty-news.com/2014/09/22/friends-colleagues-pay-tribute-journalist-becky-malkovich/

Her father, the late Dan Malkovich founded and was publisher of "Outdoor Illinois" magazine and her mother Joe Anne (Choisser) Malkovich worked for many years at the Benton Evening News. The Choisser family owned and operated the Benton Evening News for parts of seven decades.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Malkovich

Malkovich was born in Christopher, Illinois, and grew up in Benton, Illinois. His father, Daniel Leon Malkovich (1926–1980), was a state conservation director and publisher of Outdoor Illinois, a conservation magazine. His mother, Joe Anne (née Choisser; 1928–2009), owned The Benton Evening News, as well as Outdoor Illinois.

Dan Muller, Illinois State---174

Brian Wardle, Bradley---158

Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa---83

95. Bryce Drew, Grand Canyon
Score: 64
Raw Rank: T-70th
Relative Rank: T-101st

Bryce Drew returns in 2021 as the head coach of Grand Canyon following a fall from grace at Vanderbilt. How bad was Drew's relative score from his 2019 Vanderbilt season? Really bad. And so was his 2018 Vandy season, for that matter. But, Drew significantly exceeded preseason expectations in 2017 and his entire Valparaiso tenure was a success, save for 2014. Drew's Valpo performance definitely is the primary reason behind his top-100 ranking, but he did notch a top 50 and top 100 finish at Vandy before being canned.

32. Scott Drew, Baylor

From his bio on the UNCW athletics website:

Lynch, 27, served as Director of Men's Basketball Operations for YSU coaching legend Jerry Slocum in 2015-16 and 2016-17 before acting as an interim assistant coach this past March (2017-18). He brings a strong background in video editing to the position.

Former UW-Milwaukee head coach and UW assistant Rob Jeter will be a head coach again

Jeter, 50, has been an assistant coach for the past four seasons, two at UNLV and the past two at the University of Minnesota. He was with the Panthers from 2005-16, coaching UWM to two Horizon League tournament tiles (and the conference's automatic NCAA Tournament berths), as well as two regular-season titles. Overall, he was 184-170 at UWM and won 20 games five times.

Western Illinois did not renew the contract of Billy Wright after six seasons.

Around the Valley / 80 Loyola profs to take buyout
January 08, 2020, 04:03:51 AM
http://loyolaphoenix.com/2020/01/80-loyola-professors-plan-to-leave-university-at-end-of-academic-year/

This has to have a pretty interesting effect on a university and it probably doesn't have much effect on the MBB team but it is really big for a school we compete against.

"If [the professors are] not going to be replaced by full-time faculty members, this is gonna be a huge, huge reduction of Loyola's basic educational mission," a history professor and president of Loyola's chapter of the American American Association of University Professors (AAAUP), Benjamin Johnson previously told The Phoenix.

In the past, some have criticized the university for focusing on cost savings, arguing the school is run more like a business than a university, including the AAAUP which recently wrote a letter stating Loyola's president is "ill-equipped" to run the university.

Callahan responded to this criticism and said universities are businesses. She said Loyola has to remain conscious of costs in order to make education accessible for more students.

"We absolutely do need to pay attention to our cost, to our structure," Callahan said. "If that's likened to just running a business, then so be it, but I think that's about us being responsible to our students and families."

Responsible profs to students paying higher and higher tuitions. What a concept! Although I'm sure many will argue that the value is in the job a graduate is able to get.

So Far, This is the Worst and the Best Rebounding Year in History

Arkansas knew all along with the loss of Daniel Gafford (8.7 rpg last season) and no size returning, rebounding was going to be an issue.
Arkansas ranks 314th NCAA/14th SEC in offensive rebounds per game (7.7 avg).
Arkansas ranks 271st NCAA/13th SEC in rebounds per game (34.2 avg).
Arkansas ranks 276th NCAA/13th SEC in rebound margin (-2.2 avg).
Arkansas ranks 151st NCAA/8th SEC in defensive rebounds per game (26.5 avg) ... BUT SEE BELOW
THIS IS THE WORST OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING YEAR DATING BACK TO 1986-87*
^ Arkansas gets 7.7 offensive boards while opponents get 26.0 defensive boards.
^ Arkansas gets a program worst 22.9% of available rebounds on the offensive end.

THIS IS THE BEST DEFENSIVE REBOUNDING YEAR DATING BACK TO 1986-87*
^ Arkansas gets 26.5 defensive boards while opponents get 10.4 offensive boards.
^ Arkansas gets a program-best 71.8% of available rebounds on the defensive end.

Whitt and Jones Among Guards in NCAA for FG%

Jimmy Whitt Jr., ranks fifth in the SEC (100th in the NCAA) in field goal percentage (52.9%).
^ Whitt ranks 24th in the NCAA among guards in overall FG% (52.9%).
Mason Jones ranks ninth in the SEC (131st in the NCAA) in field goal percentage (50.5%).
^ Jones ranks 39th in the NCAA among guards in overall FG% (50.5%).
However, Jones is shooting an impressive 68.6% (35-of-51) inside the 3-point arc this season.
^ To put his 2-point shooting in perspective, #6 on the NCAA FG% leaders list is 68.6% by 6-11 forward Zeke Nnaji (Arizona).

Joe – in Just 44 Games – is 6 3's From Career Top 10

Isaiah Joe went into several record books last season. He set four school records for 3-pointers, two SEC freshman records (while being just the fourth SEC frosh to lead the league 3PT%) and made the fourth-most 3-pointers by a freshman in NCAA history.
Joe is on the verge of entering the Arkansas career record for 3-pointers made.
^ Joe has made 147 career triples — six shy of 10th (153 by Jonathan Modica (2003-06).
^ Joe has made 147 treys in 44 career games. By comparison, Modica needed 118 games to make his 153.
^ Joe made 113 triples as a freshman and entered the season needing to make just 40 3's to enter the career top 10.
Joe makes 39.4% percent of his 3-pointers. At that pace, he would rank ninth in school history.
Isaiah Joe on Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Watch List

Now, Jones is making it hard on IU Kokomo opponents. He is associate head coach for the Cougars, who will play Butler in an exhibition game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Jones, 26, is remembered at Butler for his steal and buzzer-beater that upset No. 8 Gonzaga 64-63 in 2013. His offense was unconventional: scoops, floaters, push shots. That cannot be taught

Valparaiso officials have signed off on a proposal to demolish the former White House Restaurant in the downtown area and build 15 upscale new homes on the site.

The majestic four-story home was built by early Valparaiso civic leader William Calkins, whose family manufactured washing machines in the 1860s. It's often described as the Calkins-Brown House, or simply the Brown Home, because it was owned by early Valparaiso University President Henry Baker Brown.

Was Hightower the NCAA ref that Bobby Knight threw a chair out on the floor at in one of Knight's meltdown demonstrations?

Hightower received his bachelor's and master's degrees at SIU Edwardsville, as well as a specialist degree, in 1991. He worked as a principal and high school superintendent in the metro east area, and was a Division I basketball referee for 36 years, officiating in 12 NCAA Final Four tournament games, per his professional website.

Hightower served on the board of trustees previously, from 2001 to 2013, and helped SIUE become an NCAA Division I sports school, his website adds. He has also served on the St. Anthony Hospital Board, and the Saint Louis Zoo Board of Directors.

https://247sports.com/college/tennessee/Article/Tennessee-Vols-Basketball-At-Valparaiso-Bryce-Drew-thought-he-was-getting-Admiral-Schofield-128149648/Amp/

"We thought we were going to get him. We loved his intangibles. I think that's what you see. You see the heart of him come out in the (Tennessee) team. That's part of the reason that makes them special."

"There was no doubt in our mind," Drew said. "We saw him play. The toughness, the competitiveness, the will to win, the 'I'm not going to stop working until I get it right' attitude,' we saw all that. At the time, a lot of coaches thought he was a 'tweener, didn't have a position up north."

Drew said he knew it was over when he saw Tyndall show up at an AAU game to look at Schofield.

"Me and my associate head coach, Roger Powell, we were like, 'Crap, if any high-major comes and looks at him, they're going to offer,"" Drew said. "What is there not to like with the kid, with what he brings to the table? Sure enough right after that they offered him, he went down and visited and committed after."

Valpo Basketball / December 2018 Poll
December 03, 2018, 10:02:29 PM
Better late than never. With 1 win already in the books we still have to choose how many losses if any in the month of December 2018 for the Crusaders.

12/4 High Point (with Tubby Smith) at the ARC

12/8 at George Washington

12/17 Ball State at the ARC

12/19 at Texas A&M

12/29 Purdue Northwest at the ARC

Will there be a loss for the Saders of the ARC?

Around the Valley / Bradley loses to UIC

Reynolds: Last-second shot attempt doesn't erase game of regrets for Bradley

CHICAGO — Darrell Brown's last-second 18-foot jumper could have erased a game full of mistakes and regrets Saturday night for Bradley.

But like many of the Braves' efforts against Illinois-Chicago, this one came up a little short, too. The shot from the right wing bounced off the front iron and over the other side of the basket as the final horn sounded.

UIC 71, Bradley 70.

"I was wide open," Brown said. "I thought it was in."

BU coach Brian Wardle was pleased with the last-gasp attempt by Brown under the circumstances.

"I loved it, it was a great look," he said. "We just wanted Darrell to go downhill and raise up. It looked good, but he just missed it. We'll take that any time."

What Wardle won't take is the breakdowns the defensive-minded Braves suffered on that end of the court, allowing the hosts to take control of a tight game early in the second half.

Nursing a four-point halftime lead, the Flames burst from the locker room with a 15-5 salvo for a 14-point lead.

"Nothing they did we didn't cover on film and on the floor," Wardle said. "We had defensive lapses at times, a lack of talk. The problem is when you're on the road, you can't dig yourself a hole
like that."

Wake Forest will probably dominate Valpo on the boards.

(EDIT) This game will be on ESPNU.

If our 3 point shooters can get into some kind of groove maybe the Crusaders could pull this game out. Wake Forest is having a pretty poor year for a P5 team.

Monmouth ended up losing to West Virginia 71 - 53.

They play at Tennessee-Martin on 11/10/18 Saturday.

Sports Talk / Maybe Warsaw can knock out Penn
October 26, 2018, 11:53:51 AM
Will Warsaw be able to beat Penn this year without having the Northern half of the state depending on Valpo High to knock off Penn?

Warsaw (7-2) with losses to Plymouth and NorthWood.

Penn lost to a Birmingham, MI team and Mishawaka (4A).

FYI, Penn, Warsaw and Valpo are 6A.

Sports Talk / Surging Cardinals
August 22, 2018, 04:27:52 AM
Anybody else surprised by the sudden surging of the Cardinals after the firing of what seemed like a really good baseball guy in Mike Matheny. I've never seen a team react that well to an established manager's firing like that in quite some time. Matheny's relationship with Dexter Fowler showed that Matheny was stuck in his ways and a modern baseball manager has to find someway to relate to all his players. That and the fact that Matheny was the worst MLB manager of a bullpen. One writer said drawing random numbers out of a hat was better than having Mike Matheny manage your bullpen.
