I know it doesn't change people's perspective a whole lot but UMKC knocked off Missouri, yes, the SEC Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, 80-66 this past Monday.

QuoteIf I were Matt I would start getting my resume in order. President and Mrs. Padilla are at the game and hosted a pre-game party.  He won't be happy.

Agree. I get these sense that 1) President Padilla understands the importance of basketball and 2) does not tolerate poor performance.

We hope. We will see.

My vote for a 1-6 November is shaping up pretty good.

I think Valpo will pull out one of the games in the Bahamas by 1 or 2 points when Anderson, Edwards, Taylor or Barrett has a good scoring game. The Beacons get 2 wins in November.

0 points, 2 turnovers, 25 minutes played

Can anyone guess who these stats belong to?

I'm beginning to believe no matter how bad this person plays he will get over 20 minutes per game.

Total stats for 3 games are 2 games started, 2 points, 72 minutes, 24 minutes average per game, 5 turnovers.

So I presume Emil is hurt or some such thing as he isn't playing. Shocking, just shocking.  :(

In the UIC post game press conference Lottich mentioned that EF-V had an respiratory infection of some kind.

I think it's time to release Eron Gordon.

Probably not but the head coach can be.

Valpo will be lucky to score 20 by halftime.

Does anyone find it ironic that the famous Hoosier Helmet that is so coveted by Butler and Valpo has a Crusader on it?

Quote from: humbleopinion on November 14, 2021, 03:43:46 PMI wonder how the conversation on the board would have been different if we had scored one more point in regulation.

I wonder if Kithier had scored 10 less points if he had been guarded by someone like Prim from MSU and Valpo had lost by 10 to UIC how much more wrath & frustration would have been directed at Lottich by this message board. The "what ifs" can go both ways.

Floor spacing? Put the best players on the floor. Find a way to win with them.

I agree. the only thing is is I don't believe that the coaches will figure out some way to make this happen with Krikke & Kithier on the floor at the same time. I'd almost rather have Ben & Thomas figure it out themselves.

Valpo post UIC game press conference: https://youtu.be/Uak4I8XuCrw

Coach Lottich says "Keyondre, obviously I thought going into this week, he doesn't practice 2 days ago and Connor did" "Slim came in and performed. I thought he did a really good job. You know it's hard with freshmen that aren't as experienced. I thought he executed, he came in and obviously banged a shot. I thought he guarded well. I thought that pull up that he had was the right read. He also entered the post a couple of times which was fantastic and so we've got to continue to work him in. He's been dealing with a little bit of a thumb thing, it's been painful. There's guys playing through a lot of stuff right now."

I just don't get it. There was no mention at all of Eron playing 29 minutes and not scoring. If you're praising your freshman so much why is he only playing 6 minutes to Eron's 29 minutes? A painful thumb?

Quote from: JD24 on November 13, 2021, 06:48:50 PMGordon? If he didn't play a minute would anyone miss him? Why would he even be in the rotation?

Playing Eron Gordon 29 minutes in an game that was so close it went into O.T. has to be one of the poorest decisions Lottich has ever made at Valpo as head coach.

Eron scored no points, went 0-4 from two, and had 2 turnovers. Eron made poor decisions on offense all game long. At least in the UIC game he didn't attempt any threes. Why did Eron play that much? ? ? Why didn't Keyondre, who has actually made more shots in his 18 minutes than Eron has made in his 47 minutes, get more playing time?

ML was at tonight's UIC basketball game and while walking around greeting people he was watching the Valpo/Butler football game on his tablet. One of my relatives mentioned that he was being criticized on this message board for not being at enough athletic events. He chuckled and said "let them think what they want."

What is our AD supposed to do?

Jacob Ognacevic scores 30 points and pulls in 7 rebounds in 30 minutes of play during his first game with Lipscomb to give them an opening night win.

Jacob didn't have a huge number of 3 pointers though against Div III Birmingham-Southern. He was 1 of 2 on three pointers, 5 of 10 on two pointers and 17 of 18 free throws. The Bisons beat Birmingham-Southern 105-98. The score at halftime was 50-50. Defense was not the name of the game in Nashville last night.

Yeah, you are right. Jacob only shot 50% from the field, including 3-pointers, and although he did a fine job getting to the line, he did miss one of his 18 free throws, so he merely had 95%; plus, though he did lead the team in offensive rebounds, he might have gotten more than 7 total rebounds, which was only 2nd on the team, if he wasn't just coming off the bench and was good enough to be a starter. I don't know what I was thinking when I was under the impression he had a good game!

Why do you find it necessary to criticize me for pointing out an aspect of Jacob's game that did not come through in your post? I never said that Jacob didn't have a very good game. I just felt it necessary to point out that this game was against a Div III team, that despite Jacob scoring 30 points Lipscomb only pulled the game out in the last minutes of the game and that their asst coach said "I don't feel like we played particularly well".

If Valpo had beaten Div. III DePauw University 105-98, the score was 50-50 at halftime and Sheldon Edwards had scored 30 points by shooting 1 of 2 threes, 5 of 10 two pointers, 17 of 18 free throws and had 7 rebounds and Luke Gore had said "I don't feel we played particularly well"

that if a another person had said "Sheldon Edwards scores 30 points pulls in 7 rebounds in 30 minutes of playing time during his first game with Valpo to give them an opening night win" that the statement didn't exactly characterize what kind of game it was?

I always thought JO was undervalued at Valpo and should have been given more opportunities to shoot 3 pointers which is where I thought Jacob's value was best applied.  But in Lipscomb's win against Div. III Birmingham-Southern this is not what Lipscomb did with Jacob. He was fouled at least 8 to 12 times (18 free throws) and Jacob obviously made his free throws and several lay ups/short two pointers and had a very good game.

We simply have to find a way to score more when the other team is making shots. When not hitting threes it's time to find another way to score. The fact that our football team outscored our basketball team is one fact that I never hope to hear about again.

"I'll be honest: I don't feel like we played particularly well", assistant coach Kevin Carroll said. "Ahsan Asadullah is our go-to guy, and he just had kind of an off night tonight. Even JO [Ognacevic] had a couple of uncharacteristic misses."

With Asadullah injured and fellow big man Parker Hazen on three fouls early in the half, Lipscomb lost most of its inside presence and quickly lost its lead as well.

Honestly, I don't really know how to react to this game. It was closer than I expected when I learned Krikke would be out, but somehow still managed to be even more frustrating than usual. That is saying a lot. I think the reason it was so frustrating is because you can see the individual skillsets on display, and see they have a lot of potential as a group, but you know it will never get realized.

I have never seen the inside of a real Valpo practice, but based on the play on the court, I have to imagine it is an extremely undisciplined environment. It is the same sloppiness every game. The same carless careless mistakes over and over. While we did miss a lot of open looks from three, we basically just threw away 6-10 possessions on just awful shots that should have never been taken. Players that fear some sort of playing time repercussions or discipline in practice aren't taking THAT MANY bad shots or being THAT carless careless with the ball so consistently. For heavens sake, Edwards has played over 30 games for us now and he is still jacking up 10 threes a game, 7 of which are essentially turnovers

Our defense also would not have been that bad if we didn't bail them out with fouls so often. Undisciplined. If specific players were having issues with these things, I would say it's on the player. But these are team wide issues over the course of 5 years over entire rosters. I feel like this same exact rosters, even with the injuries, would have won this game by double digits with a solid coach.

I am excited for Krikke to return because I know most teams we play this year will not be able to stop Krikke AND Kithier in the post together. They are simply too skilled. But I KNOW that when Krikke is healthy, we will not be using it to our advantage. We wont be attacking team down low until they force us to take open threes (which this roster, unlike past years, actually have the ability to hit). I know for a fact that instead of playing through one of the best skilled big men duos in mid major basketball, we will be content watching Edwards jack up 8 contested threes and have our guards turn it over 14 times. This roster has everything they need to compete for the Valley this year, but they do all the little things, the things that actually matter in winning games, completely wrong and have absolutely no game-plan.

I thought I would make it easier for others to read your post.

Valpo     72

Valpo improves greatly compared to their exhibition losses and having Krikke back helps a bunch but they aren't quite all the way there yet and lose the game by 3.

Valpo Basketball / Re: What will the nickname be
November 07, 2021, 06:10:59 PM
I think most of us missed it because we were concentrating on our own name change.

Recently on September 30, 2021 the Capital University Crusaders Div. III changed their nickname from Crusaders to Capital Comets.

https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/education/2021/09/30/capital-university-retires-old-mascot-become-comets/5935690001/

In July, Capital's board of trustees approved a resolution to change the university's nickname and mascot following "a 15-month process of study, discussion and reflection," according to a release at the time.

"We believe that the University nickname and mascot should be a unifying symbol that enhances school spirit and pride for all who are affiliated with Capital," the release said. "In recent years, our nickname has been challenged by students and faculty for its connection to the historic Crusades. The detailed study found a significant portion of the Capital Family shares this perspective."

A contingent of Capital alums and current undergrads had been pushing a write-in candidate for consideration: the Capital Capybaras, a nod to the world's largest species of rodent. A change.com petition circulated earlier this year to add the Capybaras to the list of finalists.

The group said the four finalists were "unoriginal, overused and indistinct" options; they wanted something that would make Capital stand out among other liberal arts schools.
