After all the clamoring for Saint Louis to rejoin the Missouri Valley it was revealed that SLU now has a baseball player with multiple sexual assault allegations against him. You might remember that their basketball program started off this year with three to four of their players being accused of sexual assault. Now it's an outfielder. They seem to need an ultra religious Mike Matheny in their clubhouse these days.

A friend of mine asked me to get this news out to other parts of the state.

On June 2 Zionsville is holding a Porsche car show and festival. There is car judging, kids' activities and family fun all in downtown Zionsville. There is no admission charge and it's not all that often you see a Porsche car show. You're also liable to see famous athletes, such as Brad Stevens, Colts and Pacer players, Gordon Hayward, Eric Gordon (the famous brother of Valpo Crusader, Eron Gordon), NFL ref Mark Baltz, Antoine Bethea, Jeff Belskus, President of Hulman Racing and the Indy Motor Speedway, Drag Racer Brandon Bernstein, Jack Trudeau--former Colts QB before Payton Manning, and many other famous people from Zionsville.

Anyone get any of this action. Just my luck I was in the office on the east side of Indy at the time. I could have at least paid for a part of the new fieldhouse.

I noticed that Baseball alum Kyle Gaedele is now playing for a new team in the same league as the Gary Railcats. The new team is the Chicago Dogs (their emblem shows a hot dog on the uniform) and the Dogs will be playing at Impact Field which can be seen off of I-294 near the I-190 interchange by O'Hare Airport in Rosemont. If you are coming east on I-190 out of the airport and take the ramp for I-294 south Indiana look to your right and you will see Impact Field.

Kyle is one of the first outfielders listed on the Dogs roster.

Did you ever play with matches/fire before you turned 5?

Imagine what that young boy in the Bronx who started a fire in the apartments he and his family lived in by playing with the stove will have to deal with his whole life. He accidentally caused the death of 12 people including 4 children.

I will admit that I once started a fire on the back porch of my house in St Louis when I was 4 years old. I have had nightmares about what might have happened if our neighbor hadn't smelled the smoke grabbed me off the porch and notified my siblings and parents. My mother had only just put down the matches for a few seconds before I noticed and grabbed them and decided playing with fire could be fun.

I totally see how these things can happen and how children must be watched every second.

As I was watching last night's World Series game I remembered that the last time the Houston Astros played in the WS was 2005 when they represented the National League against the American League's White Sox. This is the first time since teams started switching leagues that a team has represented both leagues in the WS. And only 12 years apart. The other team to switch leagues was the Milwaukee Brewers. The last time the Brewers were in the WS was 1982 when they represented the American League. If the Brewers ever face the Astros in the WS how much confusion would there be for fans about which team was representing which league and does it really matter?

I understand that the new commissioner, Rob Manfred, is thinking about expanding to 32 teams (adding 2 expansion teams) and dividing into 4 divisions of 8 teams each that are based solely on regions so as to help with travel expenses and distances of travel. He also said (very quietly) that he would eliminate the National and American League titles. The one thing that would have to change, finally for good, is the designated hitter rule. If the NL title is eliminated then those NL teams that would be put in four regional divisions would have to adopt the DH. The DH is not going away because the players union is not going to allow baseball ownership to eliminate 15 DH jobs in the AL.

I think MLB has been preparing the fans for the game of baseball without the pitcher having to hit but what do you National League fans truly think of having the DH for all the 30 to 32 teams in MLB?

I happened across this Letter to the Editor in this morning's (Wed) NWI Times while looking at it online.

http://www.nwitimes.com/opinion/letters/valpo-u-president-turned-welcoming-speech-into-anti-trump-rant/article_65044557-0447-5080-9bd2-a5122f8538ea.html

I had the opportunity to listen to Valparaiso University President Mark Heckler's speech to all the new students.

He started his speech off in a pleasant manner and progressively turned his welcome speech into his own political rally against President Donald Trump. I have never heard Trump endorse the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis or any other white supremacist organizations.

I am a retired firefighter and upset he took the right as a university president and so-called pillar of our community to be able to direct his own personal feelings on new independent young adults.

Shame on him. I really don't believe he has that right from that position, whether I supported or did not support our current president. I believe the freedom of speech is still alive but should not be used by someone in his position welcoming new students to higher education.

I guess you all could consider this an editorial from the publisher, posted on the Message Board instead of the Front Page of Ramblermania. But I'm so tired and lazy right now I can't bear putting it up on the front page with the WordPress stuff and trying to find a photo.... whatever....

1. Valpo was the Best Add That Could Reasonably Be Expected for the MVC.

I remember the harsh language that Valpo fans started to use against Loyola when they started to surpass Loyola in the HL standings, when they routinely beat Loyola in the HL, and when they were snubbed by the MVC. Some of the quotes on the Valpo message boards were as nasty as you would expect from the Wichita State folks. So we've already got a good candidate for taking over the trash-talk void that will be opening up with the absence of Shocker Nation, and Koch-funded Wichita State bizzness.

So..... Welcome Valpo!!!! Everybody's happy to add Valpo to the MVC, but were pissed off to add Loyola. So let's scrape their noses bloody against the dirty pavement under the stink of their crap. By the way, Loyola is 34-15 all time against Valpo, so we might actually now have a positive W-L record against other MVC teams now.

2. Loyola's Recruiting

OK. Take it easy. Breathe slow.

Loyola has--- FAR AND AWAY --- the best recruiting class in the league coming into the 2017-18 season. This is on top of having three returning senior starters and the league's 6th man. I suppose this is why ESPN's Bracketology puts Loyola as the favorite in the league for the 2017-18 season. According to Verbal Commits, Loyola has a better level of recruits than Wichita State.

3. Have Dignity, Please.

Even when Loyola was going up against Butler in the HL, I was pleading.... please... when we start to dominate... please... be logical, gracious, and realistic. Obviously, there's never EVER been a penalty in the United States for being illogical, rude, outrageous, impractical, offensive, or stupid. Look at the current President of the United States. There is no penalty for being ill-informed, obnoxious, offensive, sexist, or racist. It's a low bar right now to ask our fans to be nicer and more diplomatic than the President of the United States, but I hope we do so while imagining the nice precedent set by Presidents Reagan, Obama, Clinton, and George H.W. Bush.

4. We are all Billboards.

Everyone you know, and some of the people THEY know, should be aware of Loyola Basketball. Buy extra tickets and invite people you only know through friends!!! If you have extra tickets that you're not going to use, think carefully about WHO and WHERE and WHAT TYPE of people might want to see a Loyola game. Do you have friends who don't spend enough time with their kids? Donate your tickets that you're not going to use in advance.

5. This is the year we break the 32-year streak, if we all agree this is the year.

Everybody has to agree, and vow to one another that this is the year, and nothing will stop us. Every day, every game, every road trip, every tournament game, every practice, every freakin' step of the road--- the players have to admit and pledge to each other that THIS IS THE YEAR THAT NO ONE WILL STOP US AND WE ARE GOING TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT. We need to scream this vow at each other.

Other suggestions are welcome. I also hope to see a thread with people signing up for more than an ordinary commitment.

I never said Loyola was a bad pick for the MVC or that they didn't have excellent facilities.

This is a good opportunity to put a good foot forward in the MVC. Loyola has come a long way.

I noticed that Brian Wardle at Bradley has a signed LOI from Ryan Stipanovich, the nephew of former NBA and Missouri star, Steve Stipanovich. Ryan is a 6'7" guard from St Louis DeSmet high school in the St Louis suburbs. Ryan has been compared to Robbie Hummel by some of the experts who pay attention to college hoops.

Greg Oden: 'I'm still trying to figure out my life'

Dana Hunsinger Benbow , dana.benbow@indystar.com 3:22 p.m. EDT October 29, 2016

Life, basketball -- none of it turned out how he had dreamed. Now Greg Oden is starting all over again.

Emotion overwhelmed Greg Oden as he picked up his identification card inside the student center at Ohio State University, surrounded by giddy 18-year-olds.

What happened? He thought to himself. What happened the past 10 years?

A decade ago he had done the same thing in the same place. Back then, he was a giddy young student with his own dreams in front of him.

He remembers the feeling of invincibility in 2006 as he embarked on an Ohio State basketball career. He was there, having just led his Lawrence North High School team to three consecutive state championships. He had been named IndyStar Mr. Basketball and had been showered with  national accolades.

He was there as the player Buckeyes coach Thad Matta recruited with glee. A player who, after one year at Ohio State, Matta swore "was going to be one of the greatest to ever play in the NBA." A player who left the Buckeyes after one year to be taken No. 1 overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.

But there he was again, two months ago, standing in line, an NBA bust — some say the biggest bust of all time — picking up where he left off.

Oden is enrolled this semester at Ohio State, a 28-year-old sophomore majoring in sports industry. Asked whether he'd play basketball again, he said, "I wish. It's over." Instead, he is back with the Buckeyes as a student coach, helping out the players and Matta any way he can.

"I wouldn't say I regret anything," Oden told IndyStar Thursday in a phone interview. "I would say I just wish I did things better."

Because if things had been done better, if luck had been on his side, if injuries hadn't happened, he might not be restarting his life at the same place the dreams started.

"I'm like, 10 years later, I'm back in line," Oden said. "I definitely feel like an old man."

Some of Oden's best times came during that freshman year at Ohio State. In the Sweet Sixteen, Oden blocked the potential winning shot in the final seconds against Tennessee. He was the hero as Ohio State won 85-84.

He remained the hero as he led the Buckeyes past Memphis and Georgetown and on to the national championship game. There, Oden scored 25 points, had 12 rebounds and four blocks against Florida.

Ohio State lost 84-75, but the NBA scouts had seen enough. Professional basketball was ready for this 7-0 phenom.

Oden says he doesn't regret jumping into the NBA at 19, but he does wonder how things might have been different. He now mentors Ohio State players about that life-changing decision.

"I have talked to them about the situation and going to the pros and what's expected," he said.

Oden — selected No. 1 overall, ahead of Kevin Durant — signed a four-year, $22-million contract with Portland but had to sit out his first season because of microfracture surgery on his right knee. A foot injury delayed the start of what became his rookie season in 2008-09, but he played a total of 61 games for Portland, flashing his potential in a five-game stretch in January, averaging 16.4 points, 11.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. But Oden was not able to consistently maintain that level of performance and a collision with Corey Maggette in February led to another knee injury.

Oden managed just 21 games in 2009-10 — including another five-game stretch in which he averaged 17.4 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks — before a patella injury caused him to miss the rest of the season. He had another microfracture surgery on his knee the following November, suffered a setback in rehabilitation and re-signed with Portland for $1.5 million, but he couldn't get back on the court. There were two more knee surgeries — causing him to miss three more full seasons — before he played 23 games with Miami in 2013-14. Oden's NBA career was over after 105 games. He averaged 8.0 points and 6.2 rebounds. He played in China last season, but was cut in January.

"Honestly, it was definitely unbelievable," Oden said of his injuries. "With the third injury in a row, I was like, 'Are you kidding me right now?'"

Oden said he's tried to be tough. But he also said some things have been very tough on him.

Oden was a free agent in 2014. He was also a man, he said, who had known nothing but basketball since he was a child.

Back in his mother's Lawrence home in August 2014, Oden's life took its worst turn, when police allege he attacked his former girlfriend after a night of drinking. Oden was accused of punching Christina Green in the face three times, fracturing a bone in her nose. Oden's mother, awakened by the commotion, had to pull Oden off Green to bring the incident to an end, court documents stated.

When investigators initially questioned Oden, police said he was "calm, apologetic and cooperative."

"I was wrong, and I know what has to happen," Oden told police, according to a Lawrence Police Department report.

"I was wrong, and I know what has to happen," Oden told police, according to a Lawrence Police Department report.

Oden was arrested and charged with one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and battery resulting in bodily injury. Oden was fined $200 and ordered to complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, alcoholics anonymous classes and 909 days of probation, as part of a plea agreement, according to court documents. A no-contact order was also put into place.

Oden didn't talk Thursday specifically about that time in his life, but did allude several times to how he wished he'd "done some things better" and how he is "trying to move on and make a new life for himself and his family."

Just five weeks ago, Oden became father to a little girl. He and the baby's mother live off campus in Columbus.

"I wanted to stay around basketball, and coach gave me a lifeline to be here," he said. "To give me something to do with my afternoons.

"I'm still trying to figure out my life. Since I've been in fourth grade, all I've known was basketball. I'm just trying to better myself and work on my degree and set something up for the future of my family."

Oden seems to have taken one of the positions vacated by Jake Diebler at Ohio State

Isn't very popular in the LCMS but..................

The goal of the theological dialogue, the statement said, was to bring Catholics and Lutherans together at the Eucharistic table.

Francis' visit "is proof of how far we have come ecumenically over the past 25-30 years," said Lisa Valkehed, a Lutheran watching the Lund event at a nearby arena.

In alternating prayers in the Lund cathedral, the Catholic and Lutheran leaders lamented the divisions and guilt of the schism and asked forgiveness for the deaths and pain that their divisions caused over history.

"We have the opportunity to mend a critical moment of our history by moving beyond the controversies and disagreements that have often prevented us from understanding one another," Francis said. "We too must look with love and honesty at our past, recognizing error and seeking forgiveness, for God alone is our judge."

http://whoradio.iheart.com/onair/simon-conway-42296/bbc-warns-english-soccer-fans-dressing-14781182/

Posing the question: "Is it wrong to dress as a crusader for an England match?" the answer appears to be a resounding "yes".

"Crusaders were the perpetrators of violent attacks across Europe and the Middle East on Muslims, Jews and pagans," the website intones, suggesting that fans may simply want to don the English flag instead, as "this has nothing to do with crusaders or what they stood for".

Valpo Basketball / Butler Bball Scheduling
May 26, 2016, 10:09:38 AM
Here is a question I'd like Butler fans to answer.

I noticed it a couple years ago when the scheduling was announced but forgot to post it on this board. I noticed it in a post on the SLU board about Indiana State's schedule.

http://www.billikens.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=27136

Scroll down to HoosierPal's post (#18) on May 20th when he quotes a line about Indiana State's schedule that was in the Terre Haute Tribune Star:

QuoteThe rest? Butler visits Hulman Center to conclude a 2-for-1, a rare two where the pair was at Hulman Center. ISU plays at Utah State in the Mountain West/MVC Challenge.

There's the mix of the traditional in-state/nearby mid-major foes (Valparaiso, Ball State, Eastern Illinois). Western Kentucky visits Hulman Center and so will a likely Division II team. ISU might do a buy game, but given its schedule, it might not have to.
– Todd Golden, Tribune-Star

Butler gave Indiana State a 2-for-1 with the 2 games at the Hulman Center. Yet they demand a 2-for-1 from Valpo with the 2 games at Hinkle. WHY? What makes Indiana State so much better than Valpo? ISU, a team Valpo beat last season. The simple answer is Butler is scared they will lose to Valpo!!!

Sports Talk / Brad Stevens absence from Celtics bench
January 07, 2016, 06:06:10 PM
I'm afraid the fact that Brad Stevens decided to fly to Indy today and not be on the Celtics bench can only mean one thing. It was announced with the fact that Stevens would be missing was that he was visiting a former Butler player. I'm afraid this means the relapse of Andrew Smith's cancer is getting to the point of calling in the friends and family so they can say good bye. A truly sad situation after all the fighting Andrew did to keep himself alive. My sincere apologies if I'm wrong. My prayers go for the Smith family and Andrew and his wife.

OL was the representative for the Big XII on the football selection committee. The Big XII will appoint a new representative to the selection committee in the spring.

I'm sure that Oliver is moving to Indianapolis for purely selfless reasons. There is no way the fact that his son is quarterback of the Colts has anything to do with taking this job.

It's not that Chicago and NW Indiana don't have restaurants such as this. It's just that in an old, small, college town the chances of dining in that restaurant are a lot greater. I truly believe that the reason the McDonough County Board of Health hasn't shut this restaurant down for good is that it hurts the local economy so much. There probably won't be a well run restaurant to take it's place.

Sports Talk / Homer Drew on ESPN 3 broadcast tonight
November 14, 2014, 10:51:21 PM
I don't this was mentioned earlier. Homer Drew was part of the broadcast team that did the Illinois-Georgia Southern game tonight on ESPN3.

http://www.nwitimes.com/sports/basketball/college/homer-drew-set-to-make-espn-broadcasting-debut/article_539d3a83-29c5-5e85-834d-563543eaf613.html

VALPARAISO | Homer Drew can't remember the last time he attended a college basketball game that didn't involve Valparaiso or Baylor.

The former Valparaiso men's basketball coach will certainly remember after tonight when Drew makes his broadcasting debut for ESPN. Drew will serve as the color commentator on the ESPN3 broadcast of Illinois and Georgia Southern, alongside play-by-play announcer Zach Zaidman.

Drew, who is set to do a package of Big Ten games this season, has formerly served as a studio analyst for various networks during the NCAA tournament.

"Wow, I certainly haven't seen a normal game in many years," Drew said. "The NCAA changed the rules and we couldn't go scout anymore so we had to rely on game tape. It's been a long time that's for sure."

Always thinking of his fellow coaching fraternity, Drew didn't want to agree to broadcast tonight's game until he had the chance to talk with Illinois coach John Groce. The Illini are playing in a tournament in Las Vegas later this month and could be matched against Scott Drew's Baylor Bears. Drew wanted to be sure Groce didn't have any problems with a possible conflict of interest.

"John is a truly great individual," Drew said. "He told me to come on down, invited me to practice. He's doing a great job at Illinois."

Drew has always had the broadcasting itch and his debut tonight will be a long time coming. Shortly after Drew retired from coaching Valparaiso in 2011, he was set to take some meetings to discuss beginning his broadcasting career. Those meetings were put on hold when both he and wife Janet were diagnosed with cancer. Three years later and both with clean bills of health, Drew decided it was time to tackle his next adventure.

"When I first retired, I started to ask what would be interesting to do," Drew said. "Broadcasting was a possibility and then the cancer came and other things became more important."

Drew is excited to broadcast for the main goal that it will keep him involved in the game that he loves. With new generations of players and coaches coming on to television screens and mobile devices all over the world, Drew is just happy to have a seat at the table. That doesn't mean he knows what kind of analyst he's going to be or if he is going to eventually develop some Dickie V-esque catchphrases.

"I really have no idea what I'll be like," Drew said. "The best advice I received was from (ESPN announcer and former coach) Fran Fraschilla. He told me just to be myself. I'm going to call the game as I see it and it's in my nature to look for the good from the coaches and the players."

Since Sunday will be coming up soon after the Friday night game I thought I would start this thread now and because it will be the bigger game for the Crusaders. I also wanted to remind posters that Mizzou is really bad at making music videos.

Unfortunately incredibly easy and yet the Canadians very much seem to want to keep their seat of government open to the Canadian public.

If the RCMP had actually been mounted as in the old cold western days then there would have been more than one new horses' a$$ in that building.

If this had been in Toronto the Flashpoint team would have handled it without much issue at all.

This is a little old but I love that it didn't come directly from Valpo or this message board.

Valpo Basketball / new Mizzou BB coach has some issues
September 17, 2014, 06:25:19 PM
http://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/mizzou/eye-on-the-tigers/mizzou-freshman-basketball-players-arrested/article_1cac0fc6-178b-51eb-b3b0-e166ae284804.html

It seems two freshmen basketball players at Mizzou have got themselves in a heap of trouble. It may not really effect the Valpo game in Nov but it does show that Mizzou may continue their troubling issues and Haith issues in the future.

I wonder if the two 18 year olds thought they could keep it out of the news. They allegedly committed their supposed crime near the Journalism School on the MU campus.

I haven't heard the details yet but 1A Lutheran Indy beat 2A #1 Indy Ritter 42-6. It's remarkably shocking since Ritter played in the 2A state championship game two years ago and only had two losses last year against catholic schools 3A Brebeuf Jesuit and 4A Bishop Chatard.

Almost forgot to mention that Ritter won the 2A state championship last year 56-6.

Many tourists are some times interested in getting to Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, CO by train. The public loves the views and traveling by train in the rockies is very scenic. When the National Park people advertise this they tell people to take the train to Granby, CO and rent a car to travel 20 minutes to the western entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park. The Amtrak Station in Granby, CO has a code of GRA. When a ticket is stamped for RMNP they include the designation via GRA. One tourist saw that designation on his ticket VIA-GRA and said "wow--this is going to be a real uplifting train trip."

Sports Talk / England vs Germany

Roy Hodgson demands major progress from England against Germany

Didn't King George demand the same of Monty?

Da-da-da-da-damn itttt, Mon-mon-mon-ty! W-w-w-w-win this w-w-w-w-w-war!

Churchill would have demanded it too but he was drunk most of the war.

I hear the English football side has been feeling a bit cold this fall. Even a bit Chile after a defeat to a South American side.

I thought I'd get this one started also.

From what I have seen you can watch this game for $6.95 by starting an account on AcesTV.

I'm hoping some "private entrepreneurs" will feel "quasi-obliged" to provide a free feed somewhere on the internet. (wink, wink)
