What happened to the "tampering" implication by the W. MI coach in the original story you posted?

Apparently it was in another article I read:

Juwan Howard Jr. done at Western Michigan, will play basketball for Detroit Titans

KALAMAZOO — Juwan Howard Jr.'s one-semester leave from Western Michigan University's basketball program has become permanent.

Adding juice to the story, the Broncos' standout freshman from last season will play for the University of Detroit Mercy. That's the same Detroit which also wound up with another prized WMU freshman, center LaMarcus Lowe, following the 2008-09 season.

WMU coach Steve Hawkins wasn't thrilled then and his "No comment" on his feelings about Howard's trek to Detroit said plenty this time, too.

WMU announced Howard's departure on Sept. 1, with Hawkins calling Howard's indefinite absence "a private matter," honoring the wishes of Howard's family, and adding that it wasn't related to basketball or academics.

Howard couldn't be reached then or now for comment. The 6-foot-6 Detroit Pershing High School graduate averaged 9.3 points as a freshman at WMU and scored 20 or more points four times.

He'll have to sit out this coming season and then will have three years of eligibility with the Titans.

"Didn't really see it coming," Hawkins said of Howard landing at Detroit. "I still stand behind Juwan, that's the main thing. I didn't know where he would end up. We gave him his release, which is a normal release, which means he can't go to a MAC school.

"I talked to his mom throughout and gave her my opinions on different places that he potentially would be at, including us. With what he was going through, I gave her my opinions throughout the whole thing. I knew that his family would probably feel like it was in his best interest to stay close to home.

"I had high hopes for him coming back, would have loved to have him back, great kid, love him to death, love the family, nothing but good things to say about all of them, but especially, if this was going to be a decision that was made sooner rather than later, I didn't think it'd work to come back to Western."

Hawkins doesn't have the same warm feelings toward the Detroit Titans program, at least not under its present coaching staff.

After Lowe's transfer to Detroit, Hawkins decided not to renew the Broncos' long-running series with the Titans after the current contract expires following this season's game at Calihan Hall.

Howard apparently worked out with members of the Detroit's men's basketball team while at home last summer.

Hawkins declined to comment when asked if he thought if the Titans coaches had tampered with Howard prior to his release from WMU.

A message was left Monday afternoon for Detroit head coach Ray McCallum.

That's the ethical/moral problem of college sports these days. Instead of being about the student-athlete, it's all about the coach, his record, the program, the school, and the student-athlete aspect is never addressed. Not meaning to open up a bad debate, but it feels like college athletics has become a new version of slavery.
