Title: 2021 Volleyball
Post by: valpotx on February 13, 2021, 11:43:42 AM
Does anyone know if Brittany Anderson chose Softball over Volleyball, due to the similar schedules?  I noticed that she hasn't been playing in any Volleyball matches, though is listed on the roster, but played in the first 2 Softball games.

Yes, I think they mentioned it during the Loyola broadcast.

I think around Valpo they call it the "Samardzija Dilemma" Could Jeff have pushed the Bears over the Colts in the Super Bowl?

It appears that way.  Don't know about why vut obviously she couldn't be in two places at once.  I guess with the highly regarded freshman setter coming in she thought she was more needed on the softball team.

It sounds like she hopes to come back for a 5th year, and I hope that will be at Valpo.  It wouldn't surprise me if a P5 comes after her, as she is good.  I don't remember reading about it, but Kelsie Packard, a solid pitcher on the softball team, ended up going to the Illini for her grad transfer year.

It will be interesting as Coach Avery does not rotate setters and Buhlman seems to be pretty solid.

So nobody noticed that Valpo almost took down #13 Notre Dame?  Had a chance to watch from my office.  Great match but we lost in 5.  That is maybe the third of fourth 5 setter we have lost.  We need to get over that hump and this team could be very good.

Yep, I noticed.  Our FR setter is really good, and seems to have improved the play of her sister, as well!

If you want to watch a defensive clinic, you will want to check out our 3-2 victory over a solid ISUr team on Monday!  In particular, sets 4 and 5.  Great first victory over the Redbirds, since entering the MVC, which was picked to finish second this season.  I know that it helps that Cookerly is just 5'1" in the Libero position, but her reaction times to some booming shots, are just amazing.

I watched most of it and finally, they win a five setter.  15-2 in the final is an off the charts butt kicking!  They are now 4-6 but 4 of the loses came in five setters.  I think they can be very good.

Quality win against Bradley today, and hope for the same tomorrow!  If you haven't watched us this season, you should.  Amazing digs by our team in each match.  We are currently #2 in the nation in digs/set, and the MVC actually has the top 3 in the nation in this category (Bradley #1).  Definitely a defensive league.

Volleyball has definitely stepped it up to the MVC level. Another top 7 or 8 conference in this sport.  Very fun to watch.  Get it done again today against a team that was 7-3 in conference!

Our Volleyball program is just so good historically, and proving itself year-in and year-out since our move to the MVC, which is one of the toughest Volleyball conferences in the nation.  It is consistently a multi-bid league.

I just watched us earn our first ever win over a Northern Iowa program, which has been ranked at several times over the last few years.  We went up 2 sets to none, fell down 10-2 in set 3, and almost came back to sweep, losing that set 27-25.  We eventually pull it out 3-2!

Fyi, the net pole pads still say 'Crusaders,' as does the massive backdrop over the Mezzanine, and the chairs that the athletes sit on.  What stupid timing in the announcement on our mascot name.  It could have waited until this Summer.  Whether it was an Interim President or Padilla, it would have made no difference at that point.  People would have still been upset or supportive, if it waited until after the athletic season completed.

As was the win earlier over Illinois State.  Clearly a team on the rise and with a freshman setter to boot!  After losing the first four five setters of the season, they have won three in a row!

I read somewhere Cookerly is coming back. Based on this I assume McCarthy is as well. I big question is what do you do with Anderson as our current setter is really solid. Does anyone play 2 setters at once?

I had thought that Brittany was graduating, she is also returning?  The younger Bulmahn is very good, and not to discount the SR Bulmahn's individual efforts, but she has drastically improved her older sister's play.  I don't think that you can sit that type of talent, solely because a Senior is coming back.

Yes, running what is known as a 6-2 formation is quite common - it allows you to always have your setter in the back row, which means you always have three hitters up front. The downside is different setters have different rhythms, and in the 6-2, each is only setting half the time. It also decreases your flexibility for subbing other spots on the floor, given the number of subs it uses.

My understanding is that Anderson is such a good athlete that she can play in different positions, not just setter.  She is 5'11" the same as outside hitter Jillie Grant. Karen has always wanted players who can play different positions, witness Bella Ravotto, who ended up being the libero when Rylee was out for a death in the family.

Congrats all around, and to the overall team on a 5th place regular season finish, in a very competitive conference.  The improvement from the elder Bulmahn in her Senior year, has been nothing short of amazing.  In her first few seasons, honestly, I had wondered if she would ever contribute meaningful stats.  I am sure that a lot of it was personal work ethic to improve, but I have to imagine having a stellar younger sister Setter, with whom she would have tons of practice, only helped.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this team lost 4 matches early in the season by a score of 3-2, meaning that they were a few points away from being 15-5 instead of  11-9. One of those 3-2 losses was to #13 Notre Dame.  They return all but three players so should be very tough next year.

Very unfortunate finish to the season...due to COVID.  This team had a legitimate shot at getting hot and winning the tourney.  We proved that we could beat any team in the MVC.

Sorry for the VU volleyball squad, tough luck! Coach Avery has a solid program built for the long term in the MVC. Unfortunately, COVID is not a friendly adversary. Fairfield University, the No#1 Seed in the MAAC Conference, just had to end their season due to a Tier 1 COVID positive case. It can happen to any team at any time.

Agree, all while being "undersized". Interesting to me is the fact that Valpo only has one assistant coach while other schools 3 plus a student assistant.  Obviously Karen is a wonderful coach.

Great win for the Beacons tonight!  3-0 over Missouri State, a traditional powerhouse who beat us 3-1 at their place.  We are still down a couple of starters to injury. Hopefully they will be back soon for the stretch run.  Very good crowd tonight as you might expect on a nice Friday night.

For what it's worth, the arena looks great with the new floor and new Beacon curtain as well as them finally getting the "Homer Drew" court  floor mess done correctly.  the TV work is outstanding and should be a joy to watch basketball broadcasts.

VUVB won a terrific on the road match against 3rd place Evansville - 25-13, 9-25, 25-20 , 25-22.
After easily winning set 1, VU offense hid in set two, 9-25.  But, in true VU VB fashion, they roared back winning set 3, never trailing, and set 4, pulling away after 8-8.  VU moved past EU, into 4th place.
Kills leaders -
  Haley Hart - 15 for .385
  Peyton McCarthy - 14 for .706
  Maddy Boyer - 7 for .333
Digs leaders -
  Rylee  Cookerly - 13
  Bella Ravotto - 8
Brittany Anderson and Elise Swistek - 7 each
Assists -
  Anderson - 23
Victoria Bulmahn - 16

A strong fourth in conference now, with home matches this coming weekend against the two teams tied for second (Bradley and Illinois State). Will likely need to win the conference tournament to make the NCAA tournament, but RPI has improved to 69. Only team in the MVC with a better RPI is Loyola.

What is the tiebreaker for volleyball?  If they finish out strong and win the last two matches they will have a tie for 3rd/4th place.  Not that it really matters they split with every team except ISUr.  We probably do not want to play them on their home court in the tournament.

The major fall non-basketball sports (soccer and volleyball) have clearly shown that Valpo belongs in the top half (or higher) in the Valley. Now we need to get basketball, baseball and softball there.  Great season for the Volleyball team.  I have high hopes for a title. We end up on the Loyola side of the bracket which may not be all bad as we split with them during the season while Illinois State swept us and of course is hosting the tournament.

Good chance of an invite to the second tier tournament again, if we don't make the NCAAs.

What is the tiebreaker for volleyball?  If they finish out strong and win the last two matches they will have a tie for 3rd/4th place.  Not that it really matters they split with every team except ISUr.  We probably do not want to play them on their home court in the tournament.
I think the tie break is the RPI score.

Good match against Loyola so far.  We were up 18-11 in set 3, only to lose 26-24, falling behind 2-1 sets after winning the first set.  Hopefully we can win the last 2 sets and get to the championship game!

Tough 3-2 loss, going down 15-13 to Loyola in set 5.  It looks like the NIVC tournament is playing this year, and we should get an invite, as this team deserves to play in a postseason.  Our RPI comparison with Loyola was 70 to their 71 going into this match, so this was a battle of the top 2 RPIs in the MVC.

Valpo will host Butler in the NIVC on Thursday. Their RPI of 65 is by far the highest of the four team pod they host. Rylee Cookerly will now have a shot at breaking the NCAA all time digs record.

We have the best RPI on our side of the bracket, 4th best overall. We play as we are capable and perhaps more home matches will happen.

Kudos to Chicago State, their RPI isn't  very good but they were 17-10 and are a 1st Round host.

The WAC and the Valley obviously consider this tournament worthwhile.

Exactly, congrats to Chicago State on a winning record, as that program has always been terrible.

Not only do we have that solid of an RPI versus the rest of this field, we ended up with the best RPI in the MVC!  I would be interested to know why Loyola didn't go to the NIVC.  Did they feel slighted to not receive an NCAA at-large bid, or maybe were directed by the Atlantic-10 that their teams are above such a thing?  Regardless, let's make this a fun run!

I'll admit that I had no idea there was an NIT equivalent for volleyball, but very glad this is the case since Valpo can continue to play (and even host!)

I can't see why Loyola would decline based on the prestige of the NIVC tournament. There are teams from the Big East, SEC and ACC in the tournament. I also have no idea what constitutes "automatic qualifier", since UConn (for instance) was third in the Big East.

Another good win.  Evansville must hate us.  Can you imagine going 0-4 against a conference opponent in the same season?

This team has the same feel as our Men's Basketball team that went to the NIT championship.  Veteran-laden and high expectations, and probably just on the outside of getting an NCAA at-large bid with our RPI.

Very good news! Not sure what the criteria for home court is for the tournament (UConn is hosting North Florida and North Florida has a better RPI). If they use RPI for determining home court for the finals, only Weber State has a worse RPI that Valpo. The best is Arkansas at 44, but they have not hosted any matches.

If you didn't watch the match against UConn, you missed one hell of a volleyball match.  Valpo wins 3-0, but every set was by 2, and had non-stop lead changes/ties throughout.  There had to be at least 1,000 folks at the match, as well, with a great student showing.  We get to host the championship against UNLV.  Let's win it all!

It appears Cookerly will only need 11 digs on Sunday to tie the all-time NCAA record. Ironically, her quest for the goal has been made more difficult by the excellent efficiency of the team, which has swept its last four matches by 3-0 counts and limited the number of sets played.

Official attendance says 1,267 fans showed up.  I don't believe that I've seen that many fans at a Valpo Volleyball game previously.  It harkens back to when I was on campus, and we were in the WNIT, hosting against the University of Houston in the Quarterfinal round, as well as our NIT run in Men's Basketball.  It looks like that WNIT game had 1,947 fans show up, which has to be a Women's Basketball record.

Fantastic performance and can't wait to see the final!  This team has a ton of heart and peaking at the right time.  The turnout and student section was AWESOME to watch!  Volleyball has clearly past women's basketball in the heart of fans.  Even before this tournament the team was getting 600 per match while basketball was drawing about 300.  With the current state of the women's team the fan participation may drop even further.

GO BEACONS!!  BRING HOME A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Without the band, or even cheerleaders, the student section was more packed and rowdier than any Men's basketball game in years, including the NIT run. Final exams start on Monday so let's see if they have one more night in them. High quality play for both teams. Men's basketball should note that winning contributes to increased student and community interest. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more fans than the announced 1,267, a Valpo volleyball record. The ticket scanners for athletic events are very fickle and if it doesn't read after a few attempts and there are people waiting behind you they waive you through. This has been going on all semester.

Brian Jennings and Renee' Turpa, our primary volleyball broadcast crew. Agreed on Todd, and it's bene fun to have him on a few volleyball matches this season, but Brian has been our primary play-by-play voice for volleyball for several seasons and does and excellent job. With Dave Huseman's departure before this season, Brian now calls all of the home women's basketball on ESPN3/+ as well.

Great season, and unfortunate end, losing 3-0.  To me, the key point in the match was in set 1, when their 6'2" player (Freeman) basically threw the ball over the net for a point, and you apparently can't challenge such a play in volleyball.  That put UNLV in the lead 16-15 (?), and seemed to suck the air out of the set for Valpo.  No idea how the official missed such a thing, as it was basically a lacrosse throw with her arm.  Cookerly finishes 1 dig shy of the NCAA record, I believe.  UNLV had several big hitters, so it was going to be tough, regardless.  Towards the beginning of the match, the announcers said that there were 2,200+ fans in attendance.

Great job, ladies!

I am sure that you are aware, but you can't half throw the ball in volleyball.  She pushed and held onto it for too long, essentially dunking the ball.  Regardless, I am not questioning the result, but rather what I viewed as a key moment in the match.  The crowd seemed a bit down after that point.

Unfortunately, the better team did win tonight. Agree with both the bad throw call but also overall good refereeing for the tournament. What a heartbreaker for Rylee Cookerly. Maybe we could have an intern review every game over her career to see if she could pick up one or two more digs? Aside from the absolutely jam packed (what pandemic?) student section, there were indeed another 75-100 students standing the entire match on the west side of the bleacher section. A UNLV parent told me they watched the student section on TV against UCONN and were so happy to see that again in person.  They apparently don't draw very well themselves and the only other crowd that rivalled ours all season was BYU. President Padilla was at every game and has to be impressed with the potential for athletics. Congrats to the ladies!

For all those here who lament the lack of sports interest from the student body, all you needed to see was the atmosphere at the ARC last night.  A Sunday night, the night before final exams and the place was packed with students.  That should tell everyone that the issue isn't a lack of student support, it's a lack of student support for bad teams. Win and they will come. Posting videos of previous years and the student interest is only part of the answer.  The missing part is the wins those teams put together.

Great job by our Volleyball team.  A great season. Now, how about the men's and women's basketball teams providing something to cheer about!

Ladies you represented the university and the MVC wonderfully and have no reason whatsoever to hang your heads! You put together a great season that we will all remember fondly for a long time. Thank you and congratulations once again! This is perhaps the biggest step the athletic department has made in showing that it belongs in the MVC and we have you to thank for that. I would say that in volleyball and women's soccer we are certainly there already. The other sports still need some work but thanks to this season in these two sports there is legitimate hope for the future of Valpo athletics! Thank you!
