Title: Bobby Capobianco
Post by: BigDWSU on July 03, 2011, 11:28:28 AM
Heard a rumor about IU transfer Bobby Capobianco heading to Valpo.  Anyone know if there is any truth to it?

Yes, that is what I have heard from a number of sources. Also, posted on what appears to be his twitter account: "Going to Valpo. Pumped." However, as always, I will wait for official word.

Here is an article on Capobianco, http://kentsterling.com/2011/05/20/iu-basketball-math-getting-clearer-as-bobby-capobianco-leaves/ (http://kentsterling.com/2011/05/20/iu-basketball-math-getting-clearer-as-bobby-capobianco-leaves/)

Here are some stats from his two years at IU.  http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/player/indiana/bobby-capobianco (http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/player/indiana/bobby-capobianco)

He is a big kid 6'9'' but just wasn't getting the minutes it looks like.  I suppose he would have to sit a year before being eligible, which is probably a good thing since we have so many new faces already.

this could be another good pickup inside. for once maybe we won't have to worry much about our inside presence. his ft shooting needs work, but i like his 48% fg.

Did the story say he is on scholarship for 3 years, when he only has 2 years of eligibility to play?  How many guys on the team are on scholarship now?

I count 8 scholarship guys returning plus 5 new guys (Boggs, Edwards, Jakolis, Bogan and Capobianco).  That's the max, so some other move will be needed if Fernandez is added.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but it appears Capobianco was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree. Therefore, it seems we have another quality recruit in the classroom as well.

Bingo.Ironic that in order for an IU transfer to get a scholarship here, someone from VU has to get "Creaned".

I have a buddy that follows IU real closely.  Here is what he had to say about Capo:
Yeah, I still follow IU and he's already put in his paperwork to transfer from IU. I thought he might go to a MAC school since he's from Ohio originally but maybe not. He's pretty much a big body (6-8, 240'ish) to fill the paint. He doesn't do much on offense but at one point he had a 10-12 foot jumper that he liked to take a lot, unfortunately he didn't make it very often. He was a below average rebounder in the B10 and his slow footwork put him into foul trouble pretty much as soon as he stepped foot into the game. I think when he came out of HS he might have been a top-100 rated recruit but I'm not 100% certain. He's a good kid, a good person and seemingly a good student so don't worry about him being a knucklehead.

The numbers dont quite add up either....that seems to put us at the limit for scholarships, with the Fernandez kid still on the bubble (awaiting approval).

Could it be that Fernandez was not approved?  Or does that move someone off the team?  Or is the article incorrect (3 years scholarship)?

Sounds like a solid kid, lets hope he can bang a little for us.

Unless the information I received from someone close to Fernandez is incorrect, my understanding is that he has been approved.

Bogan, Witt, Broekhoff, Boggs, Buggs, Edwards, Kenney, Van Wijk, Capobianco, Harris, Kurth, Vucic, Jakolis, and Fernandez (if he is still coming?) plus Shelton our lone walk on. Thats 14 scholarship players. Some one would seem to have to leave or pay their own way. Any info on someone leaving?

Vashil's last Twitter update was "praying to God this thing come through, will be at school tomorrow. :)" on June 28.  Anyone have any updates on whether he was able to be admitted and if he is eligible?  Obviously I am speculating here, but that post sure sounds like he is/wasn't sure if everything would come together at VU.  His Facebook does list him as  VU student, though, so what do I know?

I am told Vashil has been admitted to summer school and is living in Valpo. He has been seen around campus. I have been informed he believes he has been approved and is awaiting completion of paperwork or other formalities (perhaps also regarding scholarship space) before an announcement can be made about his eligibility by the university.

A bit more on Bobby.  From what I'm told from an avid IU fan is that Bobby is a hustle player.  He hasn't much of a jumper and isn't very fast up and down the court.  He also said Capo can have a bit a weight problem if he isn't careful and that might be something to watch as he is forced to sit out this next season.
From what I'm hearing, I'm liking this less and less.  Hopefully he can find new life here at Valpo and turn this doubter into an believer.

Do you really think Bryce would take "a shorter version of Calum McLeod"??  The Indiana fans called Bobby the "vanilla gorilla".  A true banger who can hit the three? Come on guys. He will be a very good addition.

As for Cam leaving, it would surprise me.  He is a senior and nearing his degree. If he does then the entire team would be in place for the next two years as Cam is the only senior.  I was thinking it might be a point guard transferring.

Whether you are wrong or right, there are some things that need to be left alone in fairness to the individual, until the university decides to release it.  As mentioned before, sometimes some of us know things that we cannot disclose until the right time, and especially when it concerns a young mans future.

Since most avid IU fans are sitting around waiting for Bob Knight to return and actually think he might, I put zero credence in most everything that is said.  He need big guys, this one has some experience at the Big Ten level and in my mind is worth the risk.

Good point. I think there is a big difference between speculating on what players might be recruited to the program and commenting upon the future of current players who (unlike Brandon Wood, for example) have not spoken publicly about possible changes in their future connection to the program.

I can tell you this is not the case with this individual.  He is definitely able to keep personal opinions out of his diagnosis of a player.  Hopefully Capo can be the player we all hope he can be at Valpo.

The difference is both IU and Capo (on his Facebook account) have publically said this is happening.  There is a difference....If that happens with one of our current players, then I wouldn't have a problem with discussing that either.  Just so you know, I too have heard rumors, about players and coaches, but until confirmed can't say anything.  I'm glad you understand

Very funny.  I think the bigger point is his ability to move and hit jump shots with range. He doesn't look like your typical 6'9" 245 lbs plodder.

I have to say that one of the most fun things of having attended a smaller mid-major school was these open gym sessions always talked about.  I remember playing against Milo Stovall, Raitis Grafs, Kikas Gomes, Lubos Barton, Antti Nikkila, etc during my undergrad days, and then watching them take on some of the big boys a few months later.  That definitely does not happen at a larger school.

My worst experience was when I was the tallest person on my team one session, and Phil Wille decided to play on the other team.  Well, I am only 5'11"-6'0" so it did not go well  :)

It is interesting to me that it took this long to officially announce Capobianco and Carpenter, particularly Carpenter.  In any event, this finalizes the team for the next two years!

After playing Ryan at the 4 at 6'6" and Cory at the 5 at maybe 6'7" it will be very interesting to possibily see a 7 footer, a 6'11" guy and a/or a 6'9"260 lber playing the front line.  That doesn't even count Kevin or Richie.  Clearly we have moved from undersized to big when you think about the possibility of playing a guy like Ryan at the 2.  Obviously size can also slow you down but we will provide some interesting matchups the next few years.

This is an important point. There are no seniors among scholarship players on this year's team; therefore, unless something unforeseen happens, this is the team that will play together for the next two years. It will take a while for the many new players to work as a team this year. But no matter how well they do this year, next year (when Capobianco is eligible) should be where they reach their full potential as a unit.

Let's hope this is a group that stays healthy, improves with time, and learns to blend well, a team we will enjoy watching for the next couple of seasons.

From the article:

Drew also announced Thursday that Griffyn Carpenter has joined the Valpo men's basketball program as a walk-on.  Carpenter comes to Valpo from Triton [Ind.] H.S., where he led the Trojans as a senior with 19.1 points per game while shooting 57% from the floor.  He received Honorable Mention All-State honors from the IBCA as well, as he helped the Trojans to the Class A IHSAA title game

I know it was only 1A or whatever, but a perimeter high school player shooting 57% is very impressive.  Heck, most high school guards couldn't shoot 57% if they were left unguarded.  I don't think you ever count anyone out (not that anyone is), even a walk-on.  One of my all-time favorite Crusaders is Dwayne Toatley, who went from walk-on to starter.  You never know...he may really blossom.

I didn't know Toatley was originally a walk-on!  His last two years were my FR and SO years, and I just figured he was always someone who played a lot (thus a scholarship player).

Maybe Griffyn can do that, or even give Andrew Ferry contributions every few games.

THE STORY OF VALPO
The Crusaders of Valparaiso have turned into a mini-juggernaut in the NCAA Tournament. This year marks their fifth straight appearance. But it didn't look likely early in the year, when they opened the season 2-6. That was when Homer Drew grabbed a walk-on named Dwayne Toatley and made him a starter. Valpo promptly won 12 of its last 13.

Valpo is a year away from doing some exciting things I think.  This year will be a year of coming together and learning each others style of play.  Who knows, maybe they gel quickly and make things happen this year.  I still think Detroit is the team to beat this season, but this group for the next two years has me excited for the winter months!
