The World University Games get started this week.  Here is a link WUG Schedule.  It looks like Ryan's first game is Saturday vs Canada and Edwards, with New Zealand, will be playing Russia.  Sounds like a couple of tough first round games for both teams. Does anyone know if these games will be broadcast either on TV or streaming video?

I'm anxious to follow the results and individual performances as well.  Hopefully there is a way to watch the action.

Some additional Horizon League participation:  Ray McCallum (Jr, surely, but they leave it off) is playing for the US.  And Brad Stevens is one of Matt Painter's (Purdue) assistants.

Update:  Whoops, I see we had a whole other thread on the non-Valpo participants.

Rowdy and the Aussies just played Serbia the Gold medalists from the 2009 WUG, we lost by 5 with Rowdy hitting 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocked shots. 1 turnover and was fouled off which was a shame.   A nice all round game though, thought you all might like to know  :)   Ritchie and the New Zealand team have not played yet.

Other noteworthy info from the game stats:

http://www.usabasketball.com/mens/worlduniversity/11_mwug_box_01.html

-Rowdy started and played the second highest minutes (28), even though he fouled out.
- He was 3-5 from the field, including 2-3 from 3.
- He was one of only 3 Aussie players who scored in double figures
- Australia dug themselves a big hole early, getting outscored 16-7 in the 1st quarter. To their credit, they were able to right the ship in the 2nd quarter (-1) and outscored Serbia in the 2nd half (+5).

It is great to see Ryan representing his country at the highest level of world basketball competition and playing at a high level, as well.  Good luck the rest of the way!

Richie Edwards with 31 points and 9 rebounds!

I was checking the heights of the Japanese players to see who Edwards was competing against. Their center Ota is 206 cm (6'11"), Yamada is 200 cm (6'6.5"), one of their bench guys, Hashimoto, is 201 cm (6'7").

I believe Richie is the tallest New Zealand player at 6'8".

Australia just smoked Hong Kong 103-51.  Ryan had a big game - 19 pts. in only 15 min. of action.  He was 7-11 from the field, including 3-4 from 3.  He tied another Aussie player for most points scored.

Game and individual stats: http://match.sz2011.org/pdf/BK/BKM001B05/BKM001B05.C73.ENG.1.0.pdf

Australia has a lot of talented players, including 2 from St. Mary's, 1 from Oregon State, 1 from Old Dominion, 1 from Santa Clara, 1 from Missouri State, and of course their best player Ryan Broekhoff from Valpo.  8)

Thanks 'wh' Ryan would be chuffed to hear that you said that.   Canada tomorrow a big game but he's feeling good and confident.

Ha ha knew chuffed would get some comments.   Chuffed means to be extremely happy, pleased.   Chafed means to wear away or irritate by rubbing so then use talcum powder    Go Rowdy and GO AUSSIES!!!

I appreciate the international linguistic lesson.  I have a term to share with my daughter who has been working hard on speaking Australian.

No would have loved to though to cheer Ryan and the team on.   It was either go to China this year or wait and make the trip to Valpo for Ryan's graduating year, Valpo won out  :)

koala

OMG just got the results of the game between the Aussies and Canada the AUSSIES won by 2 points yeah!!!   Looks like it was a hard slog and low scoring 63 to 61.   Rowdy was second top scorer with 9 points.   So pleased as Canada were undefeated in our pool and now it opens it up.   We need to beat Turkey tomorrow to remain in the hunt for the quarter finals.   We are so pleased AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE......OI OI OI!!!
