Valpo Basketball / Re: Recruiting: 2024
November 09, 2023, 07:21:56 AM
Time will tell on Rev's program building ability, but he absolutely nails the little things. Valpo has always had the fun little graphics for signees, but this video is really cool. Whole thing probably took 10-15 min to film, polish and post and this young man will remember it forever. More importantly, every recruit who follows him or Valpo Basketball on twitter will see it as well.

The curtain down on home games? In 1997?  My friend I was there at the same time. That is absolutely incorrect. Maybe in 87. But not Bryce's junior or senior years.

I don't follow recruiting as much as I used to but this seems odd. Two Top 10 recruits signed to play for Chicago State? I know the CSU coach was their AAU coach but this is all fishy as hell.

That said, I hope they get their injunction because, A. Eff the NCAA and it's random a$$ rules enforcement, and B. Would love to see these guys play in person at the ARC.

And we have our first negative post of the Powell era after one exhibition game. Glad I took the under.

The range of outcomes over the next 2-3 years is so wide I don't even know where to begin to express where I think we could end up.  But regardless of where the journey ends, it starts tonight!  Looking forward to seeing what The Rev is cooking up.  Go Valpo!

I would imagine (and hope) there's a lot of courting corporate donors going on behind closed doors.

I can get several bottles of GREAT bourbon and a couple dozen good cigars for $1,000.

But seriously, they're throwing a bunch of stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks, and I have no issue with that. Still, can't help think a $100 ticket and maybe a silent auction and/or soliciting more donations AT the event would be a better idea.

Never understood the Bud Light hate. It's the perfect drink to pair with anything at Cracker Barrel after a long day shopping at Target.

Lipstick on a pig? Couldn't disagree more.

Sure, the argument could be made these changes are at least 10 years late but LED lighting will make the arena look a little better in person and MILES better on TV. I was tired of watching home games on ESPN+ that looked like they were being played in a dimly lit cave. Also, it seemed we couldn't go a full season without at least 4-5 games with major problems on the scoreboard so hopefully this clears those up.

Seriously, in less than 3 months we've bought out a coach, hit a home run on the hire (or so we think, time will tell), and upgraded the arena. That's a helluva spring.

Sounds like a bad IPA.

Agreed on the color scheme.

And thanks, JBC, for having to attempt to explain to my 10 year old why you have a picture of Lebron James being sodomized as your profile picture. Stay classy, Valparaiso.

Did Padilla just randomly announce we're getting a new building during his opening remarks for the presser?

BREAKING!!!

My sources tell me Valpo is in fact hiring a Men's Basketball coach sometime before next season!

If Diebler is a point of contact with Bronny I can promise you they will not let him leave.

Beware these random accounts tweeting out rumors. They usually take a guess and if they're wrong they delete the tweet and nobody remembers. If they're right they crow on the rooftops for months afterwards. I'll believe the hire when a national reporter reports it and PO backs it up. Everything else is just wind.

Year 1 of the new regime probably will be loaded with portal guys and a few holdovers. Despite some coaches having some success right away recently I don't think we can reasonably expect that. I'll consider the new coach's first year to be a success if they achieve the following:

1. Show more competent game planning / managing on game days
2. Steady, consistent improvement over the course of the season
3. 5-7 'core' players through the portal or high school recruitment between this offseason and next that are ready to take the court in '24-'25

As far as scheduling it wouldn't shock me to see a schedule loaded with buy games to offset any costs of the coaching change.

I don't think those posts reflect poorly on ML, I think they reflect very poorly on Bakari.

Listen, we've all been friends with / worked with / know someone like him. Someone whose failure to live up to their potential is always someone else's fault. This guy will spend the rest of his life complaining about teammates, coaches, bosses, coworkers, etc. No one on this board shed a tear when he left and he won't even be the answer to a trivia question for the fans at Nebraska and Iowa.

There's a reason I stopped posting on that MVC board. I don't care what they think. We had the worst gym in the Horizon League as well.

The only think that matters is nailing this hire.

Thank you Matt. Seriously. Wish him all the success in the world.

I loved nearly every one of my professors at Valpo, 3 of which I am still in contact with today.

That said, I'm really sick of those spouting off against athletics, if that is accurate. To my knowledge, there are few if any professors who currently teach at Valpo who preceded the move to DI, which means they all took the job knowing we were a DI institution!

And any of them who object to buying out a failing coach while other jobs are being cut, guess what? We're not.

Costas will be mayor after the next election, so we'll see if he's on board.

The word "potential" stands out like the old inflatable Crusader in that first sentence.

I reached out to both MLB and the compliance department last year with some questions about NIL and what would be permissible. Two voicemails and two emails: Zero response.

Still not a peep?  Mr Oren, I'm assuming you've reached out to Dr Small for comment, but is there any indication if/when a statement is coming?  Or not coming?
