Title: Game 7: @ Oregon State 11/24
Post by: justducky on November 24, 2015, 09:41:26 AM
I had already forgotten how to start a new thread but here goes.

Must win for any at large discussion. I can already hear the March conversations saying "who did they beat" disregarding the fact that nobody would play us.

Did anybody see any of the OSU- Iona game? Will we go back to man or continue to mix in the zone?

Skara could really help with this effort. Will we see more of EVN?

Some links and such.

The game's 8:00 PM central time, 6:00 PM in Oregon

TV: PAC-12 Network, with a replay 8 hours later.
Some seem to have access to the PAC-12 streaming video, if authorized by their TV provider, even if they don't get the channel.

Not a good day for local media coverage.   Seems like the NWI Times is silent (two games in a row?).  The Post Tribune has a story up, but it's behind the paywall (naturally, I have a subscription to the Times, not the Post Trib).

Vegas lines have been moving around, but favoring Oregon State on their home court, by anywhere from 2.5 points to 4.

Yesterday Pomeroy had
QuoteValpo 26th with 10th best defense, 56th best offense.  Oregon 23rd best (maybe they slipped a little? their defense especially? now at 29th?).

Pomeroy's got Oregon State at 35th.  Giving Valpo a 1.9 point edge on defense (per 100 possessions), but Oregon State a 0.7 point edge on offense.  Close enough they could still be favorites on their home court?

One RealTimeRPI prediction has OSU by 4, but gives Vapo a 40% chance of winning. The other has OSU by 5.

Massey has us 43rd, OSU 46th, and gives OSU a 6 point edge, predicting our lowest score of the season in a 56-60 loss, with a 36% chance of winning.

Sagarin has us 41st, OSU 48th.

Should be a good game.  Would be a great win.

From the game stats that come up it appears that Gary Payton II is quite the one man team. He leads in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks, and steals!

Perhaps it's been noted and I overlooked it, but OSU was 17-14 last year, 15-2 at home!  Another example of why the bigs don't want to play good mid-majors on their floors and fear them on neutral courts.

Do any of you share the feeling/observation/gut that this team is approaching each 2015-16 game in a much more mature, determined manner than the same kids (excuse me, we are talking men here) last year?  I would hope so. I just look at AP in pressers, see pictures that spotlight the concentration of the guys and can't help but notice that something's different (in a good way).

I (me, just me) only wish Bryce would design more AP-only double screens, pics, whatever .... plays, to get him more scoring opportunities. This is his team.  Everybody knows that. His teammates look to him. He has the potential to dominate in every game, but sometimes he will need help. Yet at times his unselfish play can be unproductive in the grand scheme of things. I am reminded of Dougie McBuckets here. Don't think they didn't design offensive schemes around him? Just sayin ......

A Rowdy 2.0? I mean AP seems to be just as unselfish a player as Ryan Broekoeff was.

I've seemed to notice over the last game and a half that our offense tends to score more when we go small because Vashil is in foul trouble.

It's not that he's so much of a liability on offense -- we've all seen he's come a long way -- I think our approach changes and we stop trying to hammer it inside or drive the basket.

What a fun game to watch.  It never felt like we were going to lose, even when our lead started to shrink over the last 4 minutes.  Vashil will always have trouble with fouls against Power 5 teams, as they are used to going right at the big guys.  I was impressed that he was able to play as minutes as he did against Oregon and this game, once he got to 4 fouls, but he needs to know when to contest and when to just stand straight up at times.  Regardless, I will take this win, as this Oregon State team is better than the Nebraska and Missouri teams we should have beaten over the last few years!

Going into the run the clock mode with 6 minutes to go is probably too early. But when you're up 17 you have that luxury.

The process of getting there, was pretty dominant. I think Shane attacking the rim with a couple powerful dunks set the tone for us and may do that for the whole season. It just seemed to make us more aggressive overall. If this team starts playing with more of that swagger and authority. Watch out.

I wonder what might have happened if we had played Oregon State first and Oregon a couple of days later. As someone who has traveled to the west coast from the Midwest many times in my life, that time change can really mess you up physically (though I must admit it ifor me it was worse going from the west coast to the Midwest.). I think we realistically might have come away with two wins.

On live stats it's all about PaytonII .  Shut him DOWN.

For once it didn't seem like our defense keyed on their star. Tevonn seemed to be doing OK on him, but we didn't seem to go for instant double-teams, etc. More than usual, we let him get his.

Maybe we knew his teammates couldn't finish the game.

Or maybe he was just that unstoppable - he did look good.  Obviously not good enough.

I do NOT like the way we have been finishing this game.

I definitely didn't like the five second violation.

Milking the clock seems like a Bryce Drew patent.  At least this time we had a big enough lead that it could work. It certainly always makes me nervous.

But, it does make you wonder, what's the danger in running the offense?  Does Bryce know something we don't?  (OK, he knows a lot of things we don't. But, are we missing something about running the clock late in games?)

This OSU crowd is raucous...much louder than Eugene.  If they hold on here, this is tougher than any Horizon League road game.

They were noticeable, for sure. A loud drone on Valpo possessions, which Oregon did too I think - I wonder if the Valparaizone could get into that.

Thankfully, they weren't nearly as well miced as the Oregon students.  So, they were _considerably_ less annoying on TV.

Does this count as beating a "BCS" team?

Yes!  Great win over what should be, might be, a pretty good, middle-of-the-pack, PAC12 team.

Dominant from top... almost all the way to the bottom.  Really impressive stuff.

How on Earth did Paul Oren and Homer Drew end up watching this game at -Northside-?

Don't get me wrong, kudos to them for putting the game on with sound.

But it feels like the hospitality of Valparaiso Nation has failed.

Northside was only place in town that was showing the game. They also had Oregon game on Sunday. I watched some bootlegged stream on Sunday but couldn't get it tonight. Got a text from a friend that game was on there and that Homer was there watching. Sitting with him was a fantastic way to watch the game. Just paying attention to the game through his eyes was very insightful.

classy comments from Coach Trinkle.  It was as good a game from Valpo as I've seen since the Maryland game or maybe the GreenBay title game.  Some things have changed: right now Shane Hammink is our star. Alec is playing great given the attention he is given, but Shane has speed and athleticism that Alec lacks.  As for Tevonn?  I think MANY bigs are wetting their pants over what they could have had.  He is the most improved player, Period. Jabril is a close second.  With David back we should be very good going forward.
Tonight was a MUST win and we did it!!  GO VALPO!!

Were you judging from just an audio feed?  In the second half, it looked like every other seat was empty and most fans were sitting on their hands.  Crowd seemed pretty invisible to me.

I was at both games and the crowd at Oregon was subdued while the crowd at OSU was much more rowdy.  Could be that the Beaver fans are hungry for a winner after a disappointing football season.

OSU can be a tournament team.  Their guards are good and when their young post players develop, they'll be tough to beat.  I think this win will look better for Valpo as the season progresses.

Beaver Showcase Champs!

Great, great win for Valpo!!! I thought it was important we can beat, not just compete, a quality power 5 conference team, and the mission was accomplished. If they stay healthy, this is going to be a special year.

Delicious that one can say this just after a 7'1" center has season-ending ankle surgery and with another quality player (were we saying some of the same things about Skara last week we're saying about Hammink now?) still sidelined with an ankle.

Did we not see Joseph at all?

Were his minutes given to... E Vic?

A deep team, no question!

Wow.   That was fun to watch.    It felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.

The Valpo national hype is growing fast.  Steve Lavin (ex UCLA coach) was the color man and continuously said things like "this would be a great chance for the Beavers to notch a quality home win."  Lavin was clearly expecting from the very start that Valpo would win and a win by the "young OSU team" would be big step.   He kept talking about things VU was doing as the veteran "championship" Valpo team.  It was almost funny.

Hammink was a superstar in this game and they were in awe of him.  After his intimidating drive and "posterizing" dunk over an OSU player, Lavin developed a man crush and praised every aspect of Hammink's mechanics when he made foul shots.

I do admit that Hammink was amazing, not just in the two dunks, but later in the 2nd half when he seemed to weave around defenders at will on two more drives.   He also had a dunk where he drove the baseline and dunked from the other side.   He was very smooth and the driving moves looked effortless.   Why did he leave LSU?   Somehow, I had seen his photo on the roster and pictured a beefy front court player...maybe a Bobby Campo type.   But dare I say it, the NBA player he brought to mind for me when he attacked the rim was Kobe.  I doubt he can step back and shoot like Kobe, but the graceful quickness is there.

You suppose he's got a book in him, like David Woods of the Indy Star?

No question Bryce tightened up the lineup, using only 8 this game.  Max didn't see the floor.  His minutes? Not to E but rather to Shane who played 33 I think.  Darien also lost minutes, getting 13, also losing to Shane.  Shane showed amazing athleticism as he did one hand dunks with both hands!  I just loved watching Shane and E slash to the basket!  Great stuff!!

No question I'm with you you in loving on Shane, and on Shane and E Vic at the rack!

But, in terms of minutes at point guard, I guess it was probably E Vic and not Shane?

Seems like we've rarely seen Keith and Max in the game at the same time, with Max taking point against Oregon and Rhode Island when Keith was on the bench.

I remember Nickerson bringing the ball up against the press on at least one possession, and I wonder if he spent a decent chunk of his 18 minutes, or say 5-8 of them anyway, playing the 1.

But, yeah, I suppose Hammink's and Nickerson's minutes both came partially at the expense of D Walker.  (Or we could talk about a whole different comparison if we want to bring Skara back into it - it feels like a long time since we've seen him! I guess it's only been 10 days.)

Sounds like Paul phoned him up.

Presumably he had one for the local media after the game.  Probably it's less common to publish the visiting team's presser?

OSU did put up a highlight video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZNQ93c7Fkg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZNQ93c7Fkg)

But, if the broadcast swung a bit in Valpo's favor, this highlight reel is 100% OSU.

Will be interesting to see how Bryce divides up the minutes when Skara comes back. In close games Peters is not leaving the court, so no minutes there. Vashil and Jubril together have been adding up to around 40 minutes in recent games. Bryce has shown that he is not against playing the hot hand or resting the cold hand as Darien's minutes have been down especially against OSU. I think Skara's minutes will come from EVN/Darien at first until Bryce finds what works best. Will change night to night based on who has the hot hand.

Hammock is a monster. Leads Valpo with 8 at 3 minutes.

Hammocks are big but are they really monsters?

I feel like on balance, the slowing it down offense worked.  We had a few empty possessions, but those empty possessions drained minutes off the clock (albeit thanks to multiple offensive rebounds, but still).
