General VU Discussion / Moving on…-
October 29, 2022, 07:56:06 PM
Please delete if not allowed...

I've been moved on for a little while now (my wife no longer works for VU, we are at ND now). Anyways, been going throw some things and it's time to get rid of some of the VU I've collected through the years.

I've got some Homer Bobbleheads, a couple Crusader Bobbleheads, and so far 1 Victory Bell (there's another around here someplace). Also have a signed Homer/Bryce South Shore poster and an Alan Harre South Shore poster. Also have pieces of the old gym floor around here somewhere.

I probably won't be checking here very much so maybe best to send a DM, I think I get an email when that happens, if you're interested in any of it and we can try to make a deal.

Valpo Basketball / Transfers 2020
March 08, 2020, 07:33:28 PM
Javon opened up the conversation (after I imagine he was asked the question by a reporter) when he announced he is returning next year!  Here's where I put my confidence level on guys returning based on absolutely no knowledge.

He's Back: JFL, McMillan, Sackey, Robinson, Gordon, Krikke

50/50: Clay, Morgan, Lorange, Freese-Villien

Clay really played great and I could see where bigger programs may have got in his ear. Morgan didn't have much of a role, maybe that changes maybe it doesn't for next year. Siggurd and Emil never really had much of an opportunity. I don't see that changing much next season either. I could understand them looking elsewhere.

It'll be interesting to see where how the dominoes start falling, not just with Valpo but everywhere. Hopefully there will be a couple more tournament games in our future before things in this thread progress too far.

Other Sports / Ultimate Frisbee
May 02, 2019, 10:54:10 AM
Valpo's Ultimate Frisbee team has made it to nationals for the first time.  I don't know much about this team, but that is a pretty exciting accomplishment.

Valpo Basketball / Transfers
March 08, 2019, 02:22:02 PM
I'm not sure how I feel about speculating who will, won't, should or shouldn't transfer (I can be swayed either way). I see no harm in speculating how many may head out looking elsewhere.

Sports Talk / Indiana High School State Tournament
February 25, 2019, 11:01:53 AM
Which (region or not so region) teams/players are you following during this state tournament?

Teams
I'll be closely watching Valpo HS since thats where I live, Calumet since I teach in that school system, and 21st Century/Kouts/WT.
Valpo - Newman obviously is a Mr. Basketball candidate. I really like how Aerts plays, he is smooth and the fact that he can do just about anything at that size is impressive. Valpo also has a few big strong guys that seem happy to do the dirty work in the lane.

Calumet - Da'Vion Davis can is capable of going off any given night and will probably be a repeat all area selection. His backcourt teammates of Paris Hernandez (think Rajon Rondo numbers) and Jerrell Johnson both play their roles very well. When guys on this team do their jobs right they really are a tough team to beat.

The 1A sectional with 21st Century, Kouts, and Washington Twp is probably one of the best around.  I'm not sure the two PCC schools can beat 21st and Nelly Davis but all three teams have been pretty highly rated in single A this year.

Players
Brandon Newman -Valpo, Sr.  idk when they announce Mr. Basketball but I'm interested to see if how far he can carry this Valpo team.
Nate Aerts - Valpo, Sr.  really under appreciated player by most outside of Valpo, super smoother and can do it all.
G'Angelo Reillo - Whiting, Sr. has some D1 offers and is another stat sheet filler, a scoring machine. On a terrible team but is capable of 30 points or more every single game
Jake Wadding - Chesterton, Jr.   match up nightmare. I'm not sure he has the help to do much this year but he is only a junior and should put up good numbers against whoever Chesterton sees.
Jonelle Davis - 21st Centry, Jr.  has several nice D1 offers and is a stat sheet filler. I think 21st is going to make a deep run.
Da'Vion Davis - Calumet New Tech, Jr.  is a scoring machine. They won the sectional as an underdog last year, can he lead his team when they're the favorites?
Keon Thompson - Merrillville, Soph. he can fill it up. Can he carry M'ville to a sectional upset?
Jalen Bullock - Michigan City, Fr.  who was poached from the middle school I teach/coach at. He is going to be a good one and at 6'6'' or so might be a name we hear from in another year or two

Around the Valley / Drake
February 14, 2019, 02:04:53 PM
Drake is at it again. Scooping up region kids. Heard they just offered former Merrillville SF Jonah Jackson (heard he will probably accept). He is currently at John A Logan JUCO. Drake going to be able to run an entire region five out there pretty soon.

Around the Valley / MoState Buzzer Beater
February 11, 2019, 12:17:44 PM
I don't know how to put a link in here or a video clip...but that play on the buzzer beater was wild. Double dribble, travels, fouls...looks like it all probably happened in that one play and all went uncalled.  Result, half court bomb to win it. Haha
#10
Valpo hosting Drake. Drake has several region guys the team.  It is HOF night, Valpo trying to bounce back and protect home court.

Valpo wins 73-66.

https://crowdfunding.valpo.edu/s/1347/17/cf-home.aspx

I know this is posted elsewhere, but there is an athletics project going on in this round of crowd funding.  An Athletic Training Room Vectra Laser. They're looking to raise $2,600 to help all of VU's athletes recover from injuries.

https://www.valpo.edu/forevervalpo/proud-to-be-valpo/

It's right around the corner. I always enjoy all the social media posts about past and current students' experiences and seeing all the love/appreciation for the university.

Looks like some new crowd funding projects are coming too!

General VU Discussion / Crowd Funding at VU
January 30, 2018, 06:30:06 PM
Brand new to the university is crowd funding. They got their first tree projects listed. Looks like a neat opportunity to give to specific projects that you find worthy of your money. Here is a link, https://crowdfunding.valpo.edu/s/1347/17/cf-home.aspx

I think this is a neat idea. I'm not rolling in the dough, but I sent a crisp electronic $5 bill to each project.

I will be staying off twitter the entire game  :-X

Not even sure what to say about this game. Hoping for a win (like always), but just want to see a good basketball game.

Looking to improve my game thread record to 3-1 with this one.  Come on Crusaders, don't let me down!
#17
I've heard your cries.....With my topic starting help, the team has won back to back MVC games for the first time in school history   Looking to keep the streak alive vs. a down on their luck UNI team.

Gimme the Crusaders 78-70!

Valpo Basketball / Drake Wednesday, January 10 at 7pm
January 06, 2018, 06:05:46 PM
Come on team extend my game thread streak to 2!  I've got a coach my middle school squad this night, hoping to have a victory to watch on replay when I get home!

Valpo 72-67 win.
#19
I'll try to turn our luck by starting this game thread.

I think Illinois state is facing some injuries. Valpo showed some signs on offense at Bradley let's hope they can bring that and the rebounding on saturday and get that elusive first MVC Victory.

Valpo 72-61 win.

Sports Talk / Vanderbilt
November 13, 2017, 11:52:19 AM
Just saw Vandy landed a huge recruit in Darius Garland and they are a finalist for Romeo Langford (his AAU team is Nike and of the three finalist only Vandy is a Nike school).  Also heard they are going to land another real solid recruit real soon.  We all knew Drew and Powell could really recruit.

Other Sports / Robot Football National Championship
April 08, 2017, 09:01:30 AM
Our best team on campus isn't getting any attention, our all time undefeated National Champion robotic football team! They are trying to defend their title in today's tournament at the ARC!

If you're around you should check it out. Lots of fun, I enjoy it more then NFL, plus VU is really really good. I want to say the games are at 10, 11 and 2 (National Championship) with the consolation game at 1.

Valpo Basketball / Valpo Day of Giving
April 12, 2016, 08:08:28 AM
http://www.valpo.edu/proudtobevalpo   Consider making your first gift, extra gift, any gift.  I'm proud to be Valpo.  Valpo gave me an opportunity to get my graduate degree in education.  I was the first to go through this particular program as a married man with a kid.  Valpo took a chance on me and I'm grateful for the opportunity everyday since.
