Me too...if this team didn't redshirt Nick Davidson, then they won't redshirt Relvao either.  But I'll keep banging the redshirt drum.

Ironic, because some coaches LEAVE because of hecklers.

Peters is a stud, plays with a lot of grit, and from the other side he made a couple of borderline dirty plays

Uh... ?
You'll have to forgive him/her. S/he already proved s/he doesn't know the difference between Skara and Alec; s/he also doesn't know the difference between Alec and Dodd apparently either.

Quote from: FWalum on March 21, 2015, 11:42:41 AMI think we also need to add Tevonn into the equation
Very good point; I'm not sure where he fits in yet, though we'll have a better idea after next year.

Here are some freshman guard season numbers.

Some I don't have stats for; some don't belong in a comparison because there's just no comparison as freshman to freshman (B-Mac got 10 mpg for 25 games; Berdiel got 14 mpg for 31; Nuness was too long ago to have stats for, as was Tonagel).

http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/compare?add=jimmie-miles&erik-buggs=2008-2009&i=1&jarryd-loyd=2004-2005&jimmie-miles=2003-2004&milo-stovall=1998-1999&p1=tevonn-walker&p2=jarryd-loyd&p3=milo-stovall&p4=erik-buggs

As you can see, the best comparison for him in Valpo freshman terms is Milo Stovall.  Loyd and Buggs were 1s not 2s, so, duh.  But they're really the only freshman guards that got as heavy a run.  However, my recollection--feel free to challenge--was that Milo had an amazing freshman year that was pretty close to his ceiling (12.0 ppg as sr, 10.6 as fr).

I also threw in Jimmie Miles despite once calling on this site for a "moratorium on comparisons to Jimmie Miles".  I think the statute just ran out on that though.

The new season blocks record is 98.  The old one was 72.  So, should stand for a while.  We'll miss you, Vashil, especially the extra year you should've had.  His career mark was 170, #2 behind Raitis' 228.

The new record for most points in fresh-soph years is 1003.  Alec posted the #8 season for points with 570, and while having more games than most of the rest of those guys on the list helped, he still had to do it.  Had he hit one more 3 at the end (wouldn't that've been nice) he'd have tied senior Dan Oppland for season points, and he'd have passed senior Rowdy Broekhoff to have the #6 season in 3FGs alone.  (Let that sink in for a second.)

As it is, he posted the #5 all-time 3-pt shooting season, at 46.6%, and is just behind Seth Colclasure for the #5 3FG% career, at 42.55%.

So how much better could he be?  I'll leave that to Kyle to project improvement, and simply give the most conservative estimate (what else) and tell you where he'd be if he posts 2 more seasons just like these 2.  Just a baseline; obviously he'd do better, just as he exceeded last year this year.

Games
1.  Buggs 138
2.  Alec 136

Points
1. Bryce 2185
2. Alec 2006

Rebounds
t4. Dan Oppland 782
t4. Alec 782

Field Goals
1. Alec 698
2. Bryce 696

3FG
1. Bryce 364
2. Alec 280

FTs
6. Dan Oppland 364
7. Alec 330

After 20 more FTA he'll be top 10 for FTs as well as 3FGs.

Again, this is the baseline.  I mean, why would Bryce leave in the next two years?  Because he's the only one who can keep Alec from breaking most of his records ; )

I also considered "no-shot" (rejected because sounds like we'd no chance) and "got-shot" (rejected because overdramatic).

You know it's bad when all the press pool reporters even have to mention it.

Also, who knew you couldn't type the surname of Christopher and Maura  :censored: without getting censored?  That :censored:  :censored:.

At the 3:35 mark of the 2nd half, you might remember, Vashil put home a layup to pull us within one.  (unfortunately, that would be the last basket I would see, for reasons I don't care to go into.)

But what that one play did was flip the whole season's O/U away from FWAlum to the new champ, "valpo4life", because the flush was off a KC assist, giving him 3.708 apg for the season.  His O/U was set at 3.7.  (I'm sure FWAlum was so happy at the time he doesn't even mind now.)

But that's how close things were! (clicking embiggens)

I guess I'm running out of things to say, and for some reason the graphic is a lot of white space, so I guess just looking at this will do the talking for me:

Congrats, valpo4life, winner of the GOLD and to our own pgmado, winner of the... BROWN.

Congratulations for fitting two of our favorite three topics into the same paragraph.  However, I must subtract a point for not commenting on attendance.

HISTORYMAN makes, well, history, as the first Coaches' Challenge Champion!

Incredibly, he was within a minute on 5 different players--more than the total he was way off on (3).  Impressive.  I move you get a seat on the bench if one opens up.  (Hopefully it doesn't.)

There are some other interesting observations; the number in the rightmost column is how many points were scored on predicting each player.
--EVN and Max were the most points, but Vashil was the one everyone got right.
--Everyone thought Alec would play more than he did, but until the postseason he was under 30 mpg.
--Everyone also thought Jubril would play a lot more too. Good thing we're not actually the coaches, though.
--Some thought KC would play more, some less, but the injury obviously made things interesting.
--Closest to the pin was historyman, of course, on Skara--just a tenth away!  Well, not even: Skara was 19.794...

Says it all right there.  Also some dude lost his @#$ on that and was all calling him out for "not supporting his conference."

As if MD belongs in the B1G.  And as if Robbie should care.  (He played so long at Purdue when he got there Penn State wasn't even in the B1G yet. ...ok that's a lie.  but Nebraska wasn't.)

Quote from: Flinger29 on March 21, 2015, 06:31:48 AMAlso, how about MD's starting center Dodd who picked up his third and 4th foul on the clear block and then subsequent tech foul when Peters tried to dunk on him early in the 2nd half.  Peters was clearly not fouled, then fell to the feet of Dodd who stared down at him when he just laying there at his feet.
First of all, that was Skara (maybe "they all look alike" to you).

Second of all, it wasn't a block if he got hands rather than ball.

That's what I say.  But some people think he might be interested in DePaul, like they thought about godforsaken Tulsa.

(And maybe he was.)

But I say it'd gotta be a perfect situation and a perfect timing personally.  The longer he stays...

I don't mean things like "at least our white dudes don't have terrible facial hair/haircuts" or "our shot blocker never talked trash like a punk- ".

I'm thinking one for sure:  to lose like that moves the Bryce-o-meter at least two ticks closer to "Coming back to finish business".

Hard to imagine him leaving before next year plays out.

What else is there to take away?

Quote from: Valpower on March 20, 2015, 09:56:51 PMBy the way, my confusion revolved around the idea of whether 4-7 meant four out of seven or four to seven (4 out of 11).

what do you, adlai stevenson, and david ortiz have in common? ;)

Thankfully.

That I think is key, and why he's recruited in the first place.  We don't always get good guys, but we usually do; the few times we have reached for someone, it doesn't seem work out (shocking), and so it's good to hear.

I personally am always in favor of the redshirt, whenever it makes a bit of sense; since he is new to the sport, Daniel at 18-19 will be no comparison to where he will be at 23-24.  Same is true for everyone, not picking on him; but being a late 'convert' to roundball, a year should help him even more than most.

Plus we only lose Vashil in the front court while gaining Smits (while Hammink was listed as F by LSU we list him as G, a "perimeter player"), so that could be a wash.  Minutes down low might thus be hard to come by for a freshman.  If he redshirts, admittedly the logjam doesn't clear up much for a RS Fr, with Smits a soph and Adekoya, Peters seniors (eek put that thought back in the box), but it's better than getting Davidson/Chadwick minutes as a frosh.

Quote from: crusadermoe on March 20, 2015, 08:07:48 PMi can honestly say that if we played them 10 times we could win 4-7 of them.
Quote from: Valpower on March 20, 2015, 08:25:48 PMI don't agree. I think that we win 5 out of 10 times, if not more.

Naw, don't worry about it.  It was nice to have something positive after that, to me at least.

Thank you for being here and we hope to see more of you.

Do you think he'd benefit more from a redshirt or from playing immediately?
