Title: Trivia Time
Post by: chef on August 17, 2015, 09:22:04 AM
In an effort to make this a weekly event....here goes.
Prior to college, Bryce and I were teammates. During college, I played against Valpo. After college, Bryce and I were teammates again. Who am I?
The first winner gets two tickets to a game during the 2015-2016 season.

Two very good guesses. Neither meet all three criteria.

Brian Cardinal?

Hard to get that first criteria, or know whether or not it's right.

I've found someone who played on the 94 All Star team, was on the roster of a university who played Valpo in the 94-95 season (no idea if he got in the game) and was in the D-League for a little while. No idea if they played overseas together professionally but I'm going to sit this one out.

A3uge: According to the Indy Star Miller wasn't on the '94 Indiana All Star team (http://archive.indystar.com/data/sports/allstars.shtml?appSession=332173854016849&RecordID=143&PageID=8&PrevPageID=2&cpipage=1&CPIsortType=&CPIorderBy=&cbCurrentRecordPosition=17). The team that Hanlon lists is a High School in Maine that Miller played for his junior and senior season. Not sure you can be eligible for the Indiana All Stars and play in Maine.

Brad Miller is the correct answer. He was added to the Indiana All-Stars that played the Illinois All-Stars in a game at Valpo High. Nice work a3uge! I'll have two tickets for you and I'll have another question next week.
Title: Re: Trivia Time
Post by: Kyle321n on August 17, 2015, 12:47:36 PM
I found Sean Daugherty who went to Wisconsin and played against Valpo in '94. My thought was they could have played together in Bryce's oversees stops. I couldn't find anything on Daugherty's post-college career outside of some D-League appearances. I didn't realize that the Indiana All-Stars played in Valpo and faced Illinois with Brad Miller.

Was the spelling "Arrest" a typo, a freudian slip or done on purpose?

I heard Ron A. has a lot more "Peace" in his life.

Name the two players in Valpo history who totaled over 800 points, 400 rebounds and 300 assists?
Title: Re: Trivia Time
Post by: valpo95 on August 24, 2015, 09:22:32 AM
Jarryd Loyd and Lubos Barton
Title: Re: Trivia Time
Post by: valpo95 on August 24, 2015, 09:25:38 AM
Actually, I amend that. Loyd only had 309 rebounds and 405 assists. (I reversed them!)

I'm not 100% sure, but instead of Loyd, Tracy Gipson?
Title: Re: Trivia Time
Post by: valpo95 on August 24, 2015, 09:30:13 AM
All right, it took me some digging, but the answer is Matt Kenney (+ Barton).

Gipson only had 396 rebounds.

The eternal trivia debate, to use the internet and other resources, or not?

I have more immediate guesses for the points+rebound superlatives, without adding assists into the category...
Title: Re: Trivia Time
Post by: chef on August 24, 2015, 01:21:19 PM
Matt Kenney and Lubos Barton are correct.....fine job 95. Next week we'll set some parameters about looking things up.
Title: Re: Trivia Time
Post by: chef on August 31, 2015, 08:28:58 AM
I think there's certain parameters when it comes to looking up answers for trivia questions. I see no problem in coming up with an answer and then looking into it to see if it's likely correct, but to just start researching as soon as you read the question ruins the spirit of the game. With that said, everyone is on the honor system.... ;D
This weeks question....During the Drew era, two players have played against the Crusaders and then became the number one pick in the following NBA draft.
Name both players. Good luck.

Hey, my apologies if I broke the rules, unwritten or otherwise.  My first guess was Barton and Gipson. Then I had the numbers right in front of me so it was hard not to answer.

Good luck to all...

Carmelo Anthony is not correct. Lebron was taking ahead of him (as was Darko Milicic). Barton and Gipson were neither a Crusader opponent or the number one pick in the NBA draft.

Greg Oden
Title: Re: Trivia Time

I've tried to look it up and can't even find the answer now. So unless you are feeling challenged in your internet search skills don't do it.

Valpo played @tOSU in his very first collegiate game, pretty sure he went #1 overall. I made the trek down I-71 and was one of few not in Scarlet and Grey.

I will make my entry complete and guess a second, Lamar Odom Rhode Island. Not sure if he went #1 though.

I will go with Glenn Robinson.

The Big Dog? Valpo played Purdue a bunch of times in the 90s.

Edit: damn, saw covufan replied first. I'll go with Andrew Bogut as a backup guess.

The kid from St. Louis was a lottery pick, not sure if he was number 1.  I think its Robinson and Oden.

The answer is Michael Olawakandi from Pacific University.  He graduated the same year as Bryce.   I saw him play vs Valpo in the Big Island Invitational.

I gave up so I glanced at number 1 overall picks and instantly got it. The coach appeared in the first trivia question (as a guess) about father son coaching duos.

Edit, gah so much for the hint.

Olawakandi and Oden, the biggest busts that aren't Sam Bowie.

Sam Bowie was not a number one pick. He went second behind Hakeem.

This week's trivia question.....
When Bryce Drew made "the shot" to beat Ole Miss it was the fourth time in two years that the Crusaders hit a shot at the buzzer to win a game. Name the three Crusaders that hit buzzer beaters during that period, with bonus points awarded if you can name the opponents. There were a few other game winners in the final 10 seconds, but I'm looking for the three true buzzer beaters. Good luck.

I think that Lance Barker shot came at the end of a tremendous rally, being down double figures in the last couple minutes. Not sure if that's the one the Chef was thinking of but I do remember watching that game on TV.

looking for a buzzer beater in 1996. Barker's shot did force OT, one of the 8 the Crusaders played that season.

Craig Brunes at Central Connecticut State. Jan. 1996.
Title: Re: Trivia Time
Post by: chef on September 07, 2015, 10:31:53 PM
Brunes's shot was was from the left corner after Bryce had drawn significant attention from CCSU defense. It definitely was a Saturday night, because moments after I got off the air, I was handed a note to call in to Indiana Sports Talk (Bob Lovell's longtime statewide radio show) with the details. When they put me on hold, the first thing I heard was Lovell saying "that was Brownsburg coach Steve Brunes, thanks Steve. From high school basketball the college basketball, Valpo beats Central Conn. State tonight in a close one....."
I'm guessing in the days of no internet and cell phones, Coach Brunes had no idea at that moment his son had hit a game winner.
