Valpo Basketball / Ben Boggs
July 13, 2013, 11:59:49 PM
I've heard that Ben Boggs will be joining the Valpo MBB staff for this coming season. He's not replacing Jake Diebler, of course, but he will be a welcome addition to the staff.

So you tell us to avoid the comments section, and then make that comment.  ::)
I agree with 04. You have made one of the most offensive comments that can be made about people.

[/size]We show our prejudice by lumping a certain category of people together by saying because one or a certain number of that category of people has a certain trait that the whole group has that trait. Maybe an apology is owed.

General VU Discussion / Valpo Engineering
June 04, 2013, 09:08:44 AM
Quote from: vu72 on June 03, 2013, 08:14:43 PMthings like engineering, and having the only solar research facility in undergrad life, draws kids like Alex Peters.
Alec Peters could have gotten an engineering degree at a school like Purdue which would go a lot farther than an engineering degree at Valpo. He could have been a star in a bigger conference. What Peters really went to Valpo for was the coaching of Bryce Drew and Roger Powell and the christian atmosphere they promote on the men's basketball team at Valpo.

General Off Topic / Off Topic Custer Discussion
April 14, 2013, 06:04:07 AM
Quote from: bbtds on April 14, 2013, 04:46:09 AMCuster and his men at Little Big Horn

The biggest problem with Custer's defeat at the Battle of Little Big Horn Creek was the timing. It was actually a huge win for the Sioux and Sitting Bull in the midst of many defeats. Custer's discovery of roughly 1,000 Sioux braves at an Indian village on the banks of the Little Big Horn Creek in Montana about 65 miles from Billings happened on June 25, 1876. This was roughly 2 weeks before the Centennial of the United States on July 4th, 1876. This is like the Fall of Saigon happening 2 weeks before the Bicentennial. Custer took a little less than 300 men against these 1,000 Sioux braves who were induced by their Medicine Man, Sitting Bull, to resist the US Army and take a stand no matter what the later cost. This took Custer by surprise because the other Native American tribes had all been giving in to US demands because the saw that the inevitable of being driven to reservations was eventually going to happen. Ever since the discovery of gold in the Black Hills of South Dakota it was deemed necessary to round up the Sioux and northern Cheyenne into reservations and kill all Native Americans who didn't agree to be held on the reservations.

What the defeat of Little Big Horn did was ruin the Centennial celebration along with bringing in Colorado as a state on August 1, 1876 (the Centennial State) which was very close to the area where the Sioux were proving troublesome. Custer just made a calculated move that drove the US into a deep despair and ruined many Centennial celebrations across the land.

Sports Talk / 2013 All American Team-mens basketball

This hasn't been mentioned as far as I noticed. What view does anyone have on the 2013 mens basketball All-American team?

Sports Talk / Saders on banner in ARC
March 22, 2013, 03:25:21 AM
Just an interesting observation I made that some will get a kick out of. As I was strolling through the ARC tonight I noticed that the schools from the Lutheran basketball tournament had hung their banners on the rails that keep people from falling from the upper level to the lower level. One of the banners from a school with the mascot Crusaders had clearly shortened their name on the banner to simply "Saders." You have to wonder if our friend "Saders of the Lost ARC" had seen that what he would have thought of it.

I found this story and since it pertains to a discussion from another thread I thought I would post it here.

My opinion is that since people got used to calling the first four games "play-in" games that the NCAA should not keep changing things that the public has just gotten used to and they should keep calling them "play-in" games until there are more teams playing in those games than there are teams waiting to play.

Sports Talk / Notre who?
January 08, 2013, 04:05:53 PM
Anybody think Te'o should have won the Heisman Trophy now?

You really have to wonder about Notre Dame's selection in the BCS championship game now. They just weren't ready to play. Even if Alabama was just too good the Irish should have been more prepared to make a game out of it instead of falling flat on their faces. What a boring national championship!

Valpo Basketball / 1/9/13 Valpo at UIC game thread
December 22, 2012, 09:51:51 PM
I thought I would start this game thread early since tickets are going fast and people need to plan earlier than usual. Since my son is going to school near UIC and I've made the trip both by train and by car I can convey some important info.  Here's the info bbtds gave about the tickets:

Quote from: bbtds on December 22, 2012, 06:50:57 PMThere are seats in section 106 ($23.78 per seat-$18 plus $5.78 ticketmaster fees) and section 108 ($20.67 per seat-$15 plus $5.67 ticketmaster fees) per the Ticketmaster website for the Valpo at UIC game on Jan. 9 as of today/Saturday. http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/04004926D5085F85?artistid=843544&majorcatid=10004&minorcatid=7

If going by train: Take the NICTD/Southshore at the Dune Park Station. Hwy 49 north to US 12 east. After going under the bridge for Hwy 49 turn left into the Dune Park Station. I suggest taking the 3:02 p.m. westbound train, although you could also take the 5:05 p.m. westbound train which if everything goes right would get you to UIC Pavilion just as the game is starting if you buy your tickets ahead of time on ticketmaster. Cost is $7.25 for southshore train to downtown Chicago. You can pay the conductor on the train with cash or buy a ticket in the station through the vending machine using a credit card. The 3:02 train will get you to the Van Buren station (the station before the last stop at Millennium station) at 4:19 p.m. Walk west (away from the lake) through the tunnel till you come up in the park at the corner of Michigan Ave & Van Buren. Keep walking west (away from the lake) along Van Buren on the northside of the street. The elevated Loop train tracks will be overhead since this is the south end of the Loop. You will cross Wabash and State Streets and then come to Dearborn. At Dearborn turn right and you will see the Blue line subway entrance directly in front of you. Go down the stairs into the subway. Take the Blue line train towards Forest Park. It will cost you $2.25 and you will need exact change for the fare card vending machine. Select "BUY FARE CARD" button then put your money in the machine (no credit cards or change given) then press the "VEND" button. Your fare card will pop out near the bottom right of the machine. You insert the fare card with the white side facing away from you and with the yellow arrow pointing down into the turnstyle slot. After you insert the fare card it will pop back up and you take the fare card and proceed through the turnstyle. Board the train going towards Forest Park. At that time of day the trains run every 4 to 8 minutes. Go 3 stops to the UIC/Halsted station (which is in the middle of the Eisenhower/I-290 expressway). After getting off the train walk in the direction the train was traveling (west-away from the lake and in the opposite direction of the Sears/Willis Tower) towards Morgan Street. You will take the stairs/escalator up to street level. You should be facing west-in the opposite direction of the Sears/Willis Tower. Turn left/south on Morgan Street. Walk south on Morgan till you get to the next street Harrison and turn right. Walk on the north side of Harrison. Go past the UIC Education/Performing Arts building, then a surface parking lot, and then the UIC Harrison Street Parking Structure (a multiple level parking garage). After the parking garage is the UIC Pavilion. Gate 2 will be the first doors you will see after the parking garage (the parking garage is attached to the Pavilion by walk ramps). If you still need to buy tickets you must walk to the west side of the Pavilion where the ticket windows face Racine Street.

If going by car: Take US 30 west to I-65 north to I-80/94 west. Take the I-94 west ramp/Bishop Ford exit after you pass the state line. Take the I-94/Bishop Ford (I-94 will become the Dan Ryan Expressway after 95th Street) to the Roosevelt/Taylor exit, exit 52B, near downtown. Take the frontage road to a stop light and turn left on Roosevelt. Go over the Dan Ryan and then turn right on Halsted. Go to Harrison and turn left. Go past Morgan Street and look for the Harrison Street Parking Structure (multi level parking garage) on right. The parking garage is attached to the UIC Pavilion by walk ramps. It costs $5 to park for UIC events.

Returning by train: The southshore train times at the Van Buren station for returning to the Dune Park station are 8:43 p.m., 11:03 p.m. and 12:48 p.m. So if the game ends around 9:00 or 9:15 then you will have about 1.5 hours to kill. One suggestion is to walk east on Harrison to Halsted and turn left/north on Halsted and go to Greektown. It's about 3 or 4 blocks north on Halsted. When returning home walk south on Halsted to Van Buren (about 2 blocks & turn right/west. Go 2 blocks to Peoria Street and turn left. Go 1/2 block to the entrance for the UIC/Halsted Blue line station. Take the Blue line train in the direction of O'Hare. Go 3 stops to the Jackson station. Go back the same way you came by taking the stairs up to the corner of Dearborn and Van Buren. Walk east on Van Buren till you cross Michigan Ave into the park. Take the stairs under the sign that says "METRA"(this will get you back to the Van Buren station). Take the southshore train to the Dune Park station.

Grizz Vision with Greg Kampe 9/6/12

Coach Kampe talks about his incredibly difficult juice cleanse that benefitted "Coaches vs Cancer."

I've certainly been right there with Coach Kampe battling those late night urges to snack. A bag of fritos sounds so good right now.  ;)

Valpo Basketball / Robert Morris at Valpo 11/3/12
November 03, 2012, 09:50:48 PM
Valpo won after being down by 8 in the first half.

Rossi didn't play until the second half and Ben Boggs didn't play at all. Anyone know Boggs reason for sitting?

Capo needs to stop shooting the 3 and stay with the inside game. Capo's muscle in the post is outstanding and very very welcome.

Against a quick athletic team Bogan is not the answer at point guard. Boy, will Dority be welcome relief if he acclimates well to the rotation in December.

Fernandez has not perfected the dunk yet. Hopefully he improves before a meaningful dunk is missed. On the other hand Vashil is improving in his floor game ever more slightly but improve he has. A really good sign when he made 1 of his 2 FT's.

Buggs' athletic ability and tenacious defense is so awesome. He really is going to have a great year. Erik made 2 FT's and I almost forgot how many he missed the last few years.

Valpo Basketball / Big loss for Saint Louis U
October 18, 2012, 06:47:09 PM
http://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/slu/mitchell-will-miss-start-of-slu-season-with-broken-bone/article_b8ec881e-171d-11e2-bec1-0019bb30f31a.html

Kwamain Mitchell, SLU's best player and floor general, has broken his foot and will most likely be out till the beginning of 2013 and will miss the Dec.2 game against Valpo at Chaifetz Arena.

The loss of Mitchell, the team's captain and floor leader, is significant for a team picked to finish second in the A-10, though the guard position is the one spot where SLU has depth and experience, with juniors Mike McCall, who has played the point extensively over the past two seasons, and Jordair Jett, who has become the team's top defensive player. SLU also has a promising freshman guard, Keith Carter, who coach Rick Majerus described as the second best point guard he'd ever recruited, after only Andre Miller at Utah. Carter's playing time at the start of the season is likely to increase, and this also opens the door for junior Jake Barnett.

Mitchell averaged 12.4 points per game last season, most among returning players, and had 126 assists with a 2-1 assist-turnover ratio, which tied him for best in the A-10. He also led the team in minutes, averaging 31.4 per game. But just as important as his numbers is Mitchell's role as a team leader who makes good decisions with the ball.

Valpo Football / Valpo vs Dayton
October 16, 2012, 10:03:22 AM
I'm going to be more positive this time.

Valpo will lose this game despite making major improvements in it's game.

Valpo     24
Dayton   34

Valpo will take a 1 point lead in the 2nd half but will have trouble finishing again.

Overall it will set up Valpo to have wins against Marist, Campbell, Davidson and Morehead. Which will be the turning point for Valpo football for winning in the future.

General Off Topic / Penn State--could it be worse?
September 08, 2012, 04:13:34 PM
Penn State loses 17-16 to Virginia today (9/8/12). Their placekicker missed 4 FGs and an extra point, including a 42 yard FG with seconds left in the game. Anyone feeling sorry for the Nittany Lions yet?

By the way, their original placekicker was an all-conference player who transferred due to the penalties from the scandal.

On The Horizon / Third Seed in HL Tourney to Receive Bye
September 02, 2012, 10:52:56 PM
I was reading through some stories on the YSU athletics website on the big YSU win over Pitt when I just happen to notice this line at the end of one of the stories that their website had on the HL men's basketball tourney.

The Horizon League tournament runs March 5, 8, 9 and 12. With the departure of Butler, the tournament format has been tweaked. The top two seeds will earn byes to the semifinals while the third seed will receive a bye into the second round.

http://www.ysusports.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/releases/20120824v9axyc

That kind of struck me between the eyes because I know there have been some posters in the past that have been clamoring for a bye for the third seed for a while. Suddenly it has become reality and it seems to me a much more equitable situation that doesn't punish the third seed by dropping them 2 slots down from the second seed just because they didn't win their tie-breaker with the second seed.

For President Heckler the situation in Colorado must be very personal. The president's son was a student at Columbine High School during the time of the shooting there in 1999. He also was a VP at University of Colorado-Denver, where movie theater shooter, James Holmes, was a student, at one time, and where Holmes was receiving psychiatric therapy. I'm sure Mark knows many of the people deeply involved in both of these shootings.
