Valpo Basketball / Re: Recruiting: 2023

I hope that Powell  saying his recruits like playing defense is backed by evidence and not just a player saying so.  You can tell the difference between the kids who know how to defend and those who are just shooters.

I am really looking forward to watching this team come together.  I have heard that it is already night and day different than from before (in a good way).  Let's hope that translates to quality basketball this season.

Failure should not be defined just by wins and losses.  If the product on the floor isn't as talented as the other teams, you expect the players to be positioned to be as successful as their talent allows.  Did they get open shots? Fight for rebounds?  Does the offensive system give them the best opportunities?  I did not lcare for Lottichs systems.  They were ineffective and  I think the team was frustrated with that ineffectiveness.

I would hope by year two we see a huge improvement over next year.  And again the year after.  That's the dream.

This will hopefully be a start of a new era for Valpo basketball.

 Nelson to Fort Wayne??

Maybe I'm missing something but that's seems like a strange move.

I would say there is a reason only three teams have brown and gold. I was watching softball on Sunday and the brown looks awful. The UPS reference is completely justifiable.    I do however love the gold.

It's hard to get excited about offers. Now commitments....  hoping with the new staff set we will have some really soon.

Having Dee Brown could be amazing.  Loved watching him play first at Proviso East and then at Illinois.  I hope we find out soon.

Great press conference.    He should be able to recruit because you can't help but want to be apart of what he going to build.

Ben gave Valpo four great years to Valpo.  I have no issue with him wanting to try a different experience, especially when it is at a much higher level. It is Big Ten after all.   He is anything but the typical college athlete today.

I had heard he really liked Iowa. So regardless of where he is in the pecking order, he is at a school he felt the best about.  It will be very different from his four years at Valpo.  Wishing him nothing but the best.

It's getting comical all these people in the know.  I really hope Paul gets to break the story.  It is the least the University can do for all he does for Valpo sports.

I understand the point of entering the portal but I do agree there is a risk.  If you were a player the new coach is on the bubble of keeping, if you enter the portal, that decision is made. They are more likely not going to ask you to return if the portal doesn't work out. If you don't enter the portal, the new coach may keep you to see how you develop under his system. And you can make a decision upon meeting the new coach.  Hopefully he is coach the players are excited to play for.

My bet is on Iowa.

The coaching change has definitely made me excited for the future, which is not something I've felt for a while. Change is good.

Wonder where Matt will land. I'm still betting it's an assistant job.  I know others disagree and that's okay.

I think the best situation is if a higher major hires Matt as an assistant coach and he leaves voluntary.  I don't think he will be offered a head job at this point.  And Valpo can't afford to terminate his contract.   Best future bet for Matt is to find a position as a high level assistant.

I am not saying I am okay with losing, but it sure was a fun game to watch, which isn't always the case.   You want to team to show up and give you something to be excited about.  Hope this continues.  If they play this hard consistently, they should (hopefully) win a few games, and get much needed fan support.

Barrett needs more playing time to get in a rhythm. He's a shooter

It's a great article.  And it is sad when a good person and those around him lose their jobs.  Unfortunately that is the harsh reality of coaching at the collegiate and professional levels.   It is a hard life.

Connor is a great shooter.  He needs time to get the wrinkles out but he is definitely a threat from the outside once he starts feeling his shot again.

Just turned the game on to see us lose almost lose our lead.  I'll be turning back the the Packer Bears game.  Justin fields is way more exciting to watch even if they lose.

Matt's agent negotiated a solid contract.  If Matt had panned out, Valpo would have had a great coach at an "affordable" price.  But unfortunately for Valpo that proved not to be the case and the buyout was expensive.
#24
The reason Valpo can't fire Matt now is money.  They have to pay him regardless so they might as well can see what he can do.  He knows his job is on the line.  That should be more motivation to try and get this right, or who else will hire him?  Regardless if the season turns around or not, we have to try something different.

I don't think I can watch. We were down 1 when I started watching and now we are down 11.  Where are our shooters??
