The LAST time we will ever play this team....
We have not played them since 12/20/2012, when we beat them 89-69. We had 5 players in Double Figures: Broekhoff, Kenney, VanWijk, Boggs and Capobianco. Vashil Fernandez played 1 minute and got 1 rebound.
SO... You ask "Why are we tipping off so late?" Have we got a deal for you! Friday night is a double-header in the ARC. the OUTSTANDING Volleyball team has a revenge match with Drake starting at 5pm. YOUR BASKETBALL TICKETS ARE GOOD FOR THIS GAME TOO! What a great opportunity to support the Volleyball program.
The Jaguars played Spaulding University Eagles (Downtown Louisville, 1500 students) at the IUPUI home arena (Indiana Farmers Coliseum) for their regular season opener on Monday night...
IUPUI (1-0) plays in front of a record crowd of 4,867 at Indiana Farmers Coliseum: Fun Fact: That attendance is more than the total number of people to watch Spaulding during ALL of 2022-23 season combined home and away.
INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team kicked off all of college basketball with a home court win over visiting Spalding on Monday (Nov. 6), 70-63, before a record setting crowd of 4,867 on NCAA 'Readers Become Leaders' Day. Junior Jlynn Counter tallied a game-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting and Abdou Samb added 10 points and four boards off the bench in the win.
"It was very exciting, just being out (there)," graduate transfer Qwanzi Samuels said following his IUPUI debut. "It was definitely exciting with all the kids. I'm just happy we got the win, really.
"We played together as a team. We've got things to work on, but excited we got the win today."
Anthony Dillard paced three Spalding players in double-digits with 19 points and eight rebounds.
IUPUI shot a respectable 43.1 percent from the floor and led from wire-to-wire against the NCAA Division III opponent.
The Coliseum was lively from the outset as elementary school kids began piling into their seats nearly an hour before the 11:00 a.m. tipoff, which marked the first game in the nation for the 2023-24 season. The Jaguars didn't disappoint, surging out to a 12-2 lead in the opening six-plus minutes. The lead stayed in double-digits for the bulk of the first half before Spalding cut it to 33-25 at the break.
IUPUI (1-0) tried to land an early knockout blow behind Counter, but consistently saw the Golden Eagles counterpunch to keep within striking distance. An 11-0 run pushed the lead out to 64-47 with 6:50 to play as DJ Jackson scored six points during the burst and John Egbuta capped it with a driving layup on the left side.
The Jaguars went scoreless over the final three-plus minutes with the outcome in hand as Spalding cut the final margin to seven.
Vincent Brady II, Jackson and Kidtrell Blocker all finished with eight points and Qwanzi Samuels and Yves Nkomba closed with six apiece in starting roles. Samuels grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in 22 minutes.
"It felt being out there with the team. We went through a lot of obstacles but, just overcoming them and we got the dub today," Blocker said. "We're still getting into our roles, but I just feel like there's chemistry overall."
IUPUI held Spalding to 42 percent shooting and just 2-of-10 from three-point range. The Jaguars bench scored 30 of the team's 70 points as reserve firepower came in the form of Samb, Brady and Jackson. Jackson's eight points came in under 12 minutes on 3-of-6 shooting.
IUPUI will return to action on Friday (Nov. 10) when it treks to Valparaiso for an 8:00 p.m. Central (9 Eastern) tip-off on ESPN+.

We pull away late in second half for 77 - 64 win.
No Ron Hunter antics, sadly
From an athletic standpoint they are merely hanging out a new shingle.

"IUPUI will officially end on June 30, 2024. All IUPUI programs will become a part of IU Indianapolis by July 2024, except for the schools of engineering, technology and computer science, which will become part of the Purdue system.
As aforementioned, IU Indianapolis will retain all athletic programs and compete in the Horizon League."

Also, does this mean that you cannot major in engineering, computer science or other tech fields and play sports for IU-Indianapolis?
Ron Hunter was cool. Valpo wins by 12.

FYI, IUPUI moved over to the Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on the east side of Indy on 38th Street several years ago. Some people in Indy call the State Fair, White Expo. As opposed to the National Black Expo which used to be held in Indy until Gov. Pence pissed them off with Indiana's LGBTQ laws. Now the National Black Expo brings $millions$ to Chicago.

I'll take the over on both the spread and the total. That line is predicting a 73-69 kinda game... Heck, we put 62 up in the first half the other day...
I'll take the under on the 3200 attendance. Might get a spike due to the Volleyball game, but late Friday night start, with VHS playing in the Regional football game at Merrillville. Might also get a spike from all of the parents in town for the senior day at Football on Saturday. Hoping the 6th man student section is out in force.
I'll take the OVER on the 3 pointers.
The last time we played them...we won 89-69... I'm feeling a repeat.
I like Valpo to cover the spread and I like the over. My suspicion is that Valpo can score, but that the team defense needs to make progress.
I also like the over a 3s. Well under 3200 on attendance - Friday nights are tough nights to get attendance unless you are playing a really good opponent.
Our half court offense is putrid. I really like what I see when we are able to push the pace, it usually ends in a very good look, but it's been a challenge to speed the game up. We are reallllllly going to need to play better in the half court if we are going to avoid a ton of 25 point losses in conference play.
I don't disagree about the half court offense being rather sluggish.
This a situation in which we get to see if Coach Powell can make adjustments at halftime to get his best scorers going. We think he can recruit and he's good at the rah rah stuff but his mark will be made by what happens on the court.
I think he may have to shorten the rotation for some Schweiger was out of gas after about 8 mins and I thought he struggled a bit after that.
On another note...how stupid is it that the referees don't know who's ball it is prior to the start of the 2nd half. That's established prior to everyone leaving the court when the first half ends. Either the referee crew is inept or the score/clock people didn't do what they are supposed to do. I'll guess they are volunteers?
We've seem to hit a rough spot. Going to be hard to beat anyone if the 3's don't fall.
There have been some possessions in the second half where if the person with the ball would have made one more pass we would have had an open shot.
Coach might want to suggest to Jerome Palm that bouncing the ball two or three times in the paint before either taking a bad shot or having the ball taken the other way as he's done at least 3 times this game might best be eliminated from his game.
He's been a beast on the boards however.
Disappointing.
Well...we knew it was going to be a long season.
We're not gonna shoot 12.5% from 3 every night (I hope)
Cooper is a beast. And I like Ola's game. But we don't have a ton of depth this season.
I'm want to know more about what Edwards said near the end of the game. Did he really get ejected? That is troubling, if true.
As somebody who anticipated this game to be close and would've been content with just a win, that was embarrassing. Couldn't execute simple passes in the half court. Didn't look like we wanted to play as a team. Player gets ejected. Never mind the poor shooting night, which will happen from time to time.
Growing pains. live and die by the three. Youth and inexperience showed on defense. Palm gave great effort. Valley games...grind it out in the half court. How will we be able to speed teams up? IUPUI, not that impressive. Beatable. UWGW next week, they are really bad.
IUPUI played well in second half. Cold shooting on our part. I liked the way we got to the line. Our offensive rebounding was great, as was theirs unfortunately. Palm and Schwieger will have their hands full rebounding against much of our MVC schedule. Need some help on boards

Too much dribble and fling.
Play Williamson and Scroggins...
There are some big holes in the Beacons game.
We are who we thought we would be.
Rebounding was not awful but shooting was awful.
This IUPUI team will finish in the lowest quarter of the Horizon League.
It will be very interesting to see if Coach Powell can have his team rebound from this loss and barely beat a poor Green Bay team.
Jerome Palm must score the easy ones. There is no excuse!
The Beacons have a long, long way to go if they want to win playing way up tempo like Coach Powell wants them to play.
IUPUI's #4 from San Francisco was a real spark plug that really put them up at a great time so they could coast to a win.
It will be interesting to see how this team responds.
Not sure what was said to Counter, but probably wasn't about what route IUPUI was taking back to Indy.
I saw potential in our youth, and Palm was good.
8 for 31 in second half won't close many games with a win.
Get a little better each week.
This team will learn together.
Ultimately, nothing this season is going to matter, and it never was. Powell was hired late so there wasn't enough time to recruit his ideal team.
The purpose of this season will be to teach fans a lesson in appreciating the effort that goes into Valpo basketball, and to enjoy it no matter the outcome.
IUPUI basketball situation is very bad. To the point they've had to have tryouts to field a full team.
Valpos is not that bad and still have full belief in Coach Powell. Bad loss to start his division 1 career.
Beacs will be better by the end of the season. Large gap to bridge to MVC
Counter seems to be quite the jerk. He had an altercation with Stafford early in the game, and I wonder if he got into Isaiah's head. At this level it shouldn't happen. I can only imagine what Counter said or did to Jaxson as he (Counter) left the game.
The game reinforced my concerns about shooting that I had after the scrimmage and exhibition game. After the Trinity game I hoped that those two earlier appearances were anomalies. Now I fear that the anomaly was the strong shooting performance against the Trolls. Still it showed possibilities.
We have an emerging star in Cooper, and I really like what I have seen from Edwards. I guess we'll have to continue to look for positive aspects from the stats other than the team point totals.
Playing a small point guard major minutes that can't score has and will hurt us. Also, play Scroggins at this point.

DaVeiro gets the ball up the court to the top of the 3 point line really quick which is great. It appears his offensive game ends there. He won't shoot and won't go to the hole. I suspect that, if me and others on the board have noticed this, that a collegiate basketball program may have picked up on this. This leaves Valpo two offensive players short on every possession. Palm should not be handling the ball the way he was last night and/or he's got to make the point blank shots he gets.
With that said, there were a lot of traits I saw last night which I recall from the last few years. Each year I'd have a guy on the court who I'd want to forcibly remove from the court if I were running things. Donovan Clay and Sheldon Edwards come to mind. They of the 1 on 5 drives to the hoop. Now Valpo seems to have 3-4 candidates for this honor as that's what was happening last night. Piled on top of the 3 pointers taken without feet being set and dribbling all over the place and this was not a pretty effort.
Scroggins? Where is he?
DaViero is no different this season than his past . As was just mentioned, once he gets to half court he is done. He can't shoot, create, get to the bucket or play defense against anyone he guards, most of which are bigger and stronger than he. We can't be playing 4 vs. 5 when we are on offense. He will be MIA once the MVC season begins, if not before.
However, it is still early and things will develop as the season progresses, especially in the area of who gets playing time.
As expected, it will be a long season and Valpo needs lots and lots of talent. It will be cool to see how this team grows and improves.
Stats: Darius tied Cooper for
Most minutes at 36 and had one point. Jahari played six minutes and doubled the points by Darius with two points.
I am sure that Coach has a long list of issues on his clipboard of things that need to be addressed. Probably all of the comments already put forth on this board are already there. After watching the replay the list will double. It is almost like playing whack a mole. Fix one thing and another pops up. We have had three contests with each one presenting more issues. Keeping in mind that we almost have a completely new team and essentially a rookie head coach, it may take longer than usual to show improvement. With Illinois in a week and Drake coming soon time is not on our side. Incidentally, language is usually not a reason for a level two technical. My guess is after looking at the monitor, a greater issue was observed.
I think we now see Valpo can get away with a point guard that doesn't score when the other guards put up good numbers, as Stafford (20), Edwards (16), and Williamson (16) did in the Trinity Christian game. However, when they are not compensating for DeAveiro's lack of point production—especially Williamson, who for some reason only saw the court for 6 minutes last night after playing 20 minutes in the previous game—the offense is going to fall short, especially against D-1 opponents.
Also, even given that the high school football team played in Merrillville last night, it was disappointing that a Friday night game against a D-1 in-state team drew only 1809 people, less that the 1900 that attended a Monday night game against a non-D1 team.
Spot on Valpopal. I am not saying start Jahari. I would be happy if he got 12 minutes and Darius got 30 minutes. Cooper looked gassed at times too with 36 minutes. The Rev is learning too this season. We will see what happens next game.
There are 200 player minutes to distribute. The only reason 1 player should be awarded 40 minutes by himself is if he is a constant scoring threat. Normally, when you have players who cannot score, you try to slow the game down, not speed it up.
Our spoty play and the game result shouldn't surprise because nothing in this first month and year of transition will be easy. Every game will reviel more but looks like lots of holes to be grown into or filled by future recruits.
Disagree. Watch the tape especially in the first half Darius got guys at least 3-4 wide open shots that weren't made. He certainly can be more aggressive attacking the rim and trying to get his own in the midrange for sure but he's out there primarily to get other people shots which he did very well in my opinion. Who else on this roster can find others shots like that ?

I agree that he handles and distributes the ball well. He doesn't need to be a 20-point scorer. If he averaged even 6 PPG, it could mean the difference between winning and losing close games.
Hell, I would love it if Darius could average four points a game. Zero points and one point is not enough in close games.

Getting 3 or 4 shots for other guys for a point guard, particularly one who is nearly a complete zero otherwise offensively, is not all that impressive. If he doesn't pose a threat to score even the plays he's making won't be there.
He's probably starting at the moment because Powell trusts him the most to run the team. For the sake of the team, that will have to change with either a different player or Darius becoming more aggressive as a scorer.
I told myself I was going to be patient with this new group, and here I am singling out Darius already, and dragging other posters into to it, as well. Not good.

Feel better. I think I brought up Darius first...at least this year...and if I wasn't first I was certainly thinking it. There's a difference between ripping the team to shreds which no one is doing and pointing out obvious flaws in the roster and/or offense/defense strategy.
We must all remember that we need to be patient with this "new" group as someone said. However, Darius is not part of the "new" group. We know what he can do as he has shown us in the past seasons. However, looking ahead I believe Coach will develop a new, younger point guard who with experience will have the ability to score and run the team on offense. Let's face it, last year the MVC teams completely neutralized our offense daring Darius to shoot, which in effect had us play our 4 vs. their 5 guys when we were on offense.
Again, this team is very low on overall talent. We need patience, not at the same of patience we gave Lottich or Carlson, but enough to turn it around.
With all due respect Darius had limited minutes under Lottich and rarely touched the ball in the half court offense once the first pass was made under the old regime. So this is his first opportunity to play meaningful minutes especially playing off the ball screen which Lottich rarely ran. That said 1 point and 3 shots in 36 minutes is too little.
All due respect he's had many more mins in the games so far and is doing exactly the same thing he did with less minutes....which is exactly the concern being expressed by some. It's not a bulletin to say the situation has to change.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State men's basketball team dominated on their home court Tuesday night, handling the IUPUI Jaguars in a 96-57 victory. For the second-straight game, the Sycamores had four players finish in double-digit scoring, led by Robbie Avila (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/robbie-avila/7641) and Isaiah Swope (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/isaiah-swope/7651) with 16 each. This marks Swope's third game at the top of the scoring category for the Sycamores. On top of Avila's 16 points, he recorded four rebounds and five assists. Jayson Kent (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jayson-kent/7643) recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Xavier Bledson (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bledson/7642) also scored 11 points, grabbing three rebounds and dishing out four assists in only 18 minutes on the court. Multiple other Sycamores added to the high-scoring affair, leading to 10 total Sycamores adding points to the stat sheet. In his first minutes of the season, Avila made up for lost time by accounting for ISU's first 12 points of the game. Avila recorded six points and assisted the other six points. Swope also made his presence known throughout the first half. In the first 10 minutes of the first half, he recorded 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting. ISU used a 20-5 attack to close out the first half, utilizing six different Sycamores in the stretch. Indiana State closed out the half with 48 points on 62% shooting, the most points in a half this season. Swope led the way with 16 points at the break, draining four three pointers. Just over midway through the second half, Kent eclipsed the 10-point scoring mark on from a massive one-handed slam on a fastbreak outlet pass from Xavier Bledson (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bledson/7642), marking his first career double-double. The ISU defense held IUPUI to its lowest-scoring effort of the season, not allowing a made three pointers in the entire game.News & NotesRobbie Avila (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/robbie-avila/7641) scored 16 points in his season debut. Dating back to last season, this is Avila's fourth-straight game with at least 10 points.
- Jayson Kent (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jayson-kent/7643) recorded a career-high 10 rebounds in his double-double effort.
- Isaiah Swope (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/isaiah-swope/7651) knocked down four threes for the third-straight game. He's shooting 59.1% from behind the arc in those games.
- As a team, ISU shot 60.3% from the floor and 40.5% from three-point land, each the highest for the season.
- For the first time in the Coach Schertz, ISU held a team without a three pointer. The last time Indiana State held a team without a three pointer was on January 23, 2013 when Illinois State went 0-for-13.
- Masen Miller (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/masen-miller/7645) (8), Eli Shetlar (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/eli-shetlar/7648) (7), and Jaden Daughtry (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaden-daughtry/7647) (6) all recorded career highs in points scored.
- Jake Wolfe (https://gosycamores.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jake-wolfe/7653) led the team in assists with 6, marking his career high.
- Indiana State dominated their opponent in scoring from the paint by a 20-point margin (56 total) and in total assists (28 to 6).
- The 96 points by the Sycamores is the most points this season, and last season the team only scored 96 or more four times.
- Long, long, way to go for the Beacons to compete in the MVC!!!!!!
