Shane Hammink begins career with Bilbao Basket

By Erik on June 30, 2017

It is not too often that you see a Spanish ACB club put their trust in a rookie straight out of college, but RetaBet Bilbao Basket (Spain-Liga Endesa and EuroCup) has seen the potential in Shane Hammink (201 cm, Valparaiso'17). He comes from a legendary Dutch basketball pedigree, being the son of retired Dutch professional basketball player, Geert Hammink. Geert was drafted by the Orlando Magic in the first round of the 1993 NBA Draft.

Shane is tall, strong, and athletic for his position (guard). He has seen action at point guard in the past but is able to play any position from 1 through 4. He is most comfortable being used as a combo guard. His versatility will give Bilbao Basket an advantage as far as exploiting mismatches are concerned and it will be interesting to observe how much of a splash Hammink will be able to make in his rookie season as a pro this 2017-18.

In his senior year at Valparaiso, Shane logged 32 games and was able to drop averages of 15.2 ppg and 3.9 rpg. He was efficient, hitting an average of 59.9% of his shot attempts from two-point range.

That was fun.  He truly was one of the greatest athletes/leapers to ever lace them up for Valpo!

The more guys that find a way to play professionally, the better off Valpo's program is going to be.  Hopefully he stays healthy and has success!

I hope Shane learns a lesson on never giving up on his team, the guys who have sweated, bled and pushed themselves to the limits with you no matter which teammate you have lost. It's not about who is on the bench but who is left on the floor and making the best of the situation.

Good for Shane and good for the program getting another player a professional contract. I have no numbers to back this up but Valpo has to be one of the better schools our size at getting guys pro contracts whether it be the NBA, D League or overseas.

How does this compare to broekoff's league? Same level of competition or a few clicks below?   I know nothing of foreign basketball.

Spain and Italy are the top European leagues.  Russia and Israel have some good teams, but Spain/Italy are considered the best

I found this which was written about six months ago by a former pro player:

In Euro league: the best 30 players make somewhere between 1 and 3 million USD per year

In the top national leagues such as the ACB, VTB, ESAKE, BSL etc. most players will make between 5–10k a month

On top of this: house, car, food, and sometimes even taxes is paid for the players

The ACB seems like the very top league in Europe. Lokomotiv, where Rowdy plays, is in the top league in Russia and they would play the top teams including Spain for the EuroLeague title.  The difference is that Rowdy is the starting small forward for Loko.  So no doubt is doing very well for himself.  Don't quote me but I think this info is accurate.
