Title: VU Football @ Campbell
Post by: VULB#62 on October 30, 2012, 06:20:55 PM
Someone has to start it -- guess it'll be me.

FROM THE VALPO ATHLETIC SITE:
Scouting Campbell: The Camels are currently riding a six-game PFL losing skid after falling to Valpo last November. The Camels, who are coming off a 70-28 loss to Morehead State last week, boast the second worst scoring defense in the PFL, allowing just more than 39 points per contest. Junior quarterback Dakota Wolf is averaging 93.7 passing yards per game and is the team's leading rusher, averaging 72 yards per game. With an average of 296.5 yards per game, Campbell is the only PFL team with fewer than 300 yards a contest.

First of all, guess who is first worst in scoring defense?  Hint #1: they give up 46.4 points per PFL game this season but haven't allowed more than 70 points in a PFL game since 2010 when they gave up 86.  Hint #2:  they wear black sweat sox.

However, getting back to the task at hand, the lack of a competent Campbell offense makes me think there is a possibility that this game could squeak into the win column.

FORECAST
Valpo 28 - Campbell 27.  The difference:  Unable to locate their kicker and/or holder on four occasions, VU scores TDs on four of its 8 drives into the red zone and manages to hold Campbell to a field goal on one of its forays into the red zone instead of giving up a TD.

Well, this game should be competitive. I stress should. This is a game Valpo HAS to win if they are going to make progress for the future.

Valpo 28
Campbell 31

I agree that being able to find the kicker will play a big roll in this game, however not in favor of Valpo. Campbell finds their kicker and wins the toilet bowl by 3.

Call this the Sagarin Bowl?     Valpo is the favorite, but we're playing in N. Carolina right?

Camels          35
Crusaders      13

Buies Creek?    Sounds like the place where Jed was "shooting at some food."

Toilet Bowl it is. The problem for Valpo is that Campbell has the runs but VU can't plug the hole. Campell by 14+. Book it! :-[

I went to Buies Creek last spring for a baseball game w/ Campbell.  Jed indeed may have shot at some food there, but he would have had to go 20 miles away to find the ammo first.  Had to drive 45 mins for a hotel.  Coach Woodson got ejected in the game, and they CALLED THE COP (yes, one cop) who felt it was his job to make sure that Woodson made it out to the parking lot or whatever.  The last time I saw anything like that was at a Little League game in Hope, Indiana involving a guy with a blonde power mullett.  My advice for the football team: get there, win, and get on the bus with uniforms on and get out....good luck.

I can't predict a win on the road, even against what seems like an equally terrible Camel team.

I hope to be surprised, but I think our playcalling will be our downfall in a competitive game...with competitive meaning two sloppy teams

FWIW   It looks like there is a live video stream of the game from Barker-Lane stadium starting at 12:20 Eastern Time.  Don't know if it's free or if you have to subscribe.  Here is the link to the Campbell live event's page on their website.  I will give it a try for at least the 1st quarter --  every game has pretty much been settled by then.

14-0 Campbell, 4:07 left in 1st; Campbell took the kickoff and got a touchdown drive, Valpo drive dies in the red zone on a fumble during a sack that was returned for a TD. Between that and Presto Sports live stats, this is unbearable

The O looked pretty good (considering the opposition) until that fumble.  I am watching the live feed.  The D is not playing too tough.  The next drive after the 2nd TD -- 3 and out  :(

Hudson running well though.  They are running more like they did against Drake.

Hoffman to Summerville -TD.  That fumble for a TD is a killer so far.  PAT MISSED!  Could come back to haunt.

Seems like I am stuck at 543 posts.  Actually seems like everyone is stuck.

Held Campbell; forced a punt; and then held on the return (5th penalty in first half).

21-13 at half. The Toilet Bowl is going about as I expected it...for the two worst teams in D1 football. The kicker made it onto the field, but alas, he missed an extra point. Maybe they lost the kicker intentionally last time? Could an extra point be the difference between a win and loss? Let's hope not.

In the 3rd -- Hudson has 140 yards rushing.  Hoffman is 16 for 18 so far.
Hudson TD Long one!  62 yards!

27-21 Valpo  If this holds COVUFAN wins the pool.

That's the score at the end of the 3rd.  Let's see if this team has it in itself to hold onto this lead.

Summerville for 20.

So what do they do?  "Violated the leaping rule" on a terrible punt  1 -10 for Campbell.  Sheesh!

Dodged that one -- 4th down incomplete gives the ball back to VU.

Wood's punt fumbled by Campbell at the CU 6.

VU TD pass on a slant.  41-21.
Title: Re: VU Football @ Campbell
Post by: valporun on November 03, 2012, 02:12:09 PM
11:47 remains and Valpo has a 34-21 lead! Jake Hutson has his third rushing touchdown of the day. Jake has 242 yards on 26 carries. Jake has more rushing yards than Campbell has TOTAL yards. The offense has 476 total yards as well. Surprising showing today.
Sterling Summerville has 2 TD passes on the day on 3 catches for 39 yards. Hoffman is the QB in this game, with 20-of-22 passing for 196 yards and 2 TDs. Not the most exciting numbers, for the most part, but getting some good results, even if we're playing a team as equally bad as we are.

If we beat Davidson and finish with two wins, is that enough to keep Carlson another year?  Personally, I don't think beating two terrible PFL teams in three years and getting blown out most of the other games earns you more time.  Hoping the powers that be keep it in perspective when evaluating Carlson's future.

Happy for the players today though. They deserved the W!

Well, this is pleasantly surprising. When I made that "14-0" post a few hours ago I felt like we were done. We had a lot of games start that way where we would fail to score on a promising drive and the game went downhill from there. Nice job fighting through adversity on this one. Hopefully we can come out of the chute a little better next week.

Always happy for the kids.  Davidson IMO is a toss-up next Saturday despite being blown out by Morehead.  Valpo can win IF... they (1) stop Davidson's first drive and establish a winning tone (2) don't fumble away a ball for a TD on their first drive, (3) don't commit a slew of stupid penalties, (4) run the ball effectively (encore, Mr. Hudson!) (5) play smart (don't try to block a punt in Q4 when you're up 2 scores and wind up giving them the ball back). The coaches control 4 out of the 5 through preparation, sound game time coaching and play selection.  But my fear is that this will be a repeat of 2011, because the momentum of a win will not be properly optimized, and Davidson will capitalize on Valpo mistakes.  Morehead, if they are on, will move the FB better than we can ever defend -- even on a good day.  They beat Davidson 49-14 and have scored 119 points in the last two games while giving up only 42.  But take heart, Campbell score 28 on them.  Another slight thing in our favor is that next week they have to go to USD before they play us.

To answer your question 90, IMHO, beating Davidson should not be enough to warrant retaining the staff.  3 wins against the league weaklings in three seasons  (only one of which {Campbell}, so far, is a statement), non-competitive blowouts against all other PFL teams (especially this year), and two losses each to a D-III and a D-II team OOC in three seasons should be the governing perspective.

BTW, sarcasm aside, congrats on a big win for these kids who are busting their tails off.  I wonder when was the last time a Valpo RB had a game like that - Mr. Hudson, you are the man!

Also, I was happy to see that Howard Beale's pep talk made a difference.

Yep, Jeff Horton 253 yards against Wisconsin Lutheran in 05.  Next best is 191 by Dave Newman in 1977.

My hats off to the kids who have worked so hard, being out manned and against more experience.  It must have been very tough to keep grinding at practice, hoping, that things would get better.  Now, with a road win (when was the last one?) they can beat Davidson and maybe Morehead and end the season with some positive momentum.  Let's all hope so...

i don't understand why anybody predicts this team to win anything right now.
Well, picking them to finish close hasn't worked.  Maybe if I pick them to win the game will be close?

Valpo 27
Campbell 23

if that's your reasoning, i'd say pick them to win big. maybe then they'll win. ;)

Let's not get carried away

our bullsh!tting must have worked, milan. same time next week? :)

Count me in!
