Title: 12/15 Valpo at Missouri State
Post by: covufan on December 12, 2012, 06:34:06 PM
A week off, finals ending this week, will it be a slugish game or will they come out energized?  I'm hoping for a breakout game, one that we can build on going into these last days of 2012 and into the HL season.  An extra rebound here, a forced TO there, a few made threes, a hand in the face of the shooter...

I am hoping for an easy win over an 0-7 team. Hard to have a breakout win against a winless team with an RPI of 276. This should be a blowout and if they lose...well lets not go there.

Perhaps it bears reminding (I know it helped me) to know just how valuable to RPI a road win--ANY road win is:  (From wikipedia, emphases mine)

QuoteThe current and commonly used formula for determining the RPI of a college basketball team at any given time is as follows.
RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25)
where WP is Winning Percentage, OWP is Opponents' Winning Percentage and OOWP is Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage.
The WP is calculated by taking a team's wins divided by the number of games it has played (i.e. wins plus losses).
For Division 1 NCAA Men's basketball, the WP factor of the RPI was updated in 2004 to account for differences in home, away, and neutral games. A home win now counts as 0.6 win, while a road win counts as 1.4 wins. Inversely, a home loss equals 1.4 losses, while a road loss counts as 0.6 loss. A neutral game counts as 1 win or 1 loss. This change was based on statistical data that consistently showed home teams in Division I basketball winning about two-thirds of the time.[2] Note that this location adjustment applies only to the WP factor and not the OWP and OOWP factors. Only games against Division 1 teams are included for all RPI factors.

I saw on Twitter today that Capobianco had 6 stitches over his eye.  Shouldn't be a factor given the level of competition in the next week, but continues a streak of bad luck for him.

Took a look at the PPS for both teams and their opponents.  MSU really struggles rebounding, not fouling, and defending the paint (8 blocked shots).  A couple of Valpo's strengths has been our rebounding and KVW's ability to get to the line.

Yes, I saw him, and his right eye looks nearly swollen shut. Some faculty must give really tough final exams!

Depends on your definition of legit. He's a point guard who can actually shoot. You'll have to honor his jumper, which will eliminate the 4 on 5 offense. That makes him legit in my world. Buggs has a roll on this team but it's not starting point guard.

Dority started seven games as a sophomore for the Bulls and shot 45.5 percent from the 3-point line.

Well, OK.  While scoring less than 4 points a game he did go 5/11 from the 3PT line.  I guess "45.5%" is one way to describe that.

He definitely did get some minutes against big time teams.  His freshman and sophomore years both.

A nice piece though, as usual.

At least 45.5% is an accurate stat, even if Mark Twain might classify it as worse than a "damnable lie".  For his USF career he shot 39% from 3s (7 for 18, so slightly larger sample size).  On 2s, though, only 7 for 26, or 27%.

Hate saying this because it'll probably jinx him, but he has never missed a collegiate free throw either:  10 for 10.

The "20 ppg / 6 apg in HS" has simply been repeated often enough that everyone just accepts it, even though I went through his senior year box scores and there's like no way that could be accurate.

One more plug for the Hello post:  http://www.valpofanzone.com/2012/03/23/hello-lavonte-dority/ (http://www.valpofanzone.com/2012/03/23/hello-lavonte-dority/)  Money quote in lieu of the above shooting %:
QuoteEither way...given that Buggs is 49 / 24 / 44 for his career, let's hope Dority's a better shooter, and although smaller sample size caveats apply, let me repeat that at USF he shot 23 / 50 / 100 in starter's minutes and 27 / 39 / 100 career.  I know–let's have LaVonte shoot everything from outside the arc and at the stripe, and Erik everything else!
Hey, I love the kid, though, and let's see how does.  Doesn't have to get 20 and 6 a night to make us happy, that's for sure.

I would never "download" something from that site to play the video feed. Only use the links that play automatically. I also know there are complaints about the "ads". I use firefox as my browser with the add on called "adblock Plus". I never even see the ads, only the 'x' to close the ad window.

Anyway,

VU needs to play more controlled on offense as the refs have established they are going to call the offensive foul tonight. Dority can make threes though Bogan still can't! :banghead:

Well, it seems as though Dority took minutes from Will Bogan and Matt Kenney, who each only played 10 minutes tonight, well below their season averages.  However, those guys are team players and are willing to give up PT to help the team, so I don't think that will be an issue.

We need to see less Erik, less Will and less Ben.  Even Matt played limited minutes tonight.  Still haven't lost to anybody we shouldn't have, except maybe Nebraska, but all losses have been on the road.

With this team a win is a win and a ROAD win is a ROAD win.  MoSt really had a streak of making shots at the end of that game and started to foul with 3:15 left which kept it uncomfortable.  I like the tenacity of LvD and his scoring ability, might have to check the fouls though.  I liked the Cap, KVW, Rowdy, LvD, Buggs line.  Where was Kenney tonight?

truth, Kenney is usually our "energy" off the bench, but lately, I'm not sure if he's being messed around with in the rotations, it seems like he comes in just because Bryce is ready to put him in, and not because we're seeing a need to have Matt in to change the pace of our play to get some buckets or some kind of defensive something happening. I hope that changes when we get to HL play, and keep Matt in the "energy" spot, since Dority doesn't look like he's a bench guy, in terms of he can bring us energy off the bench.

Given the insertion of Dority into the equation, I'll cut Valpo some slack tonight.  However, MSU is horrible this year and is a team that Valpo should have destroyed.  I still have seen nothing out of this team that gives me any confidence that they can defeat a good major conference team.  A fluke victory, yes, but not anything that is predictable.

On the other hand, I really like what I'm hearing about the incoming freshmen.  I'm sure a couple of them will struggle in college, but if we hit on 3, we are going to be in good shape (provided that we bring in another big who is more athletic than Capo and more basketball-ready than Vashil).

It was nice to see that the bigger lineup some of us have been waiting to have on the court—with Ryan, Bobby, and Kevin playing alongside one another—paid off tonight when it was used in the second half. I hope we see more of this in the future.

To be honest, the HL has so many fours and fives that can shoot the three, and I'm not sure Bryce Drew wants either KVW or Capo guarding out on the perimeter.  Guys like Ben Averkamp, Cole Darlilng, Brennan Cougill,  Hayden Humes, etc. spend a lot of time on the perimeter, and with Capo and KVW in the game, one of them would be guarding these guys.

So I don't think we will see too much of Valpo's big lineup.

Why are we afflicted with so many Buggs?     Sharing water bottles?      Guess it happens across all the teams we play too.     Finals, too little sleep, living too close to other students is just part of college I guess.

I am less concerned about Capo guarding out on the perimeter than I am with his not being guarded when he goes there on offense. For the go-big attack to work best Capo must be respected and covered at and close to the 3 point line. The more all of our outside play is covered the more our complete game will open up. If Capo is just a 20% 3 point shooter then our big lineup will eventually become a twin small-tower approach and will only be effective against our weaker opposition.

Bogan boggs and kenney are not good they can't shoot they have no confidence. They have no upside

I'll agree about two out of three on that list, however the person who need their minutes reduced is Buggs.

I know that VU has never been a good pressing team but if Erik, Matt, Jordan and maybe Vashil were all to come off the bench together would we have the necessary speed and athleticism to temporarily turn the game into a track meet which might exploit Eriks strength and avoid his half court weakness? Maybe his playing 20 all out non-starter minutes unconcerned with fouls would be better for the team than our current approach. He would also spend more time being matched up against their second string point, which could also generate more turnovers.

Capo is currently 0 for 5 from three. At least Bobby is aware he's not a great three point shooter and has stopped shooting them. On the other hand Boggs is 9 of 27 for .333, Kenney is 11 of 28 for .393 and Bogan is 12 of 34 for .353. The best 3-point field goal shooter on the team is Alex Rossi, 4 for 6 for .666. But he doesn't play that much at all for some reason. Hmmmmm?

The officiating was terrible in Springfield.  Can the bloggers who were at the game or watched it explain the flagrant foul on LaVonte?  The officials called a personal foul on the Missouri State players but then called a flagrant on LaVonte.  I also thought the flagrant foul on Kevin was suspect.   ???

I hope we aren't relying on Capo to be a force inside.  I think we are anticipating much more than we will receive.  Perhaps he will go on a tear in Horizon League play.  I sure hope so.

As someone already mentioned, we have several guys who are 3-pt. jump shooters.  We have Kevin who is strictly a low post player with extremely limited range - nothing outside of 5 feet.  Until now, Ryan has been the only player capable of scoring from anywhere.  What he have been missing IMO are two things that hopefully Capo and Lavonte will add to the mix: (1) a 4 tall enough and skilled enough to hit a 10-15 foot baseline jump shot (hopefully this is where Capo comes in), and (2) a point guard that can drive all the way to the hoop, or pull up for a mid-range jump shot, or hit the 3 when left open (hopefully Lavonte).  Without a mid-range game, we have become pretty easy to defend - over play the perimeter to disrupt our around-the-horn passing, get out on our 3 pt. shooters, and deny Kevin the ball by using Erik's man to double down.  Hopefully, Capo's and Lavonte's mid-range game and other offensive skills will make us much harder to defend going forward.

We got more home-cooking than the home team, in my estimation.  Unfortunately, last night's taunting Tech has erased my memory from Friday night.  I think it was an elbow.
