Title: 2/1/13: UWM @ Valpo Game Thread
Post by: talksalot on January 31, 2013, 04:36:35 PM
Since I did not see another one... I thought I'd start one...with a little history...

This is game #23 of the year.   Going back 20 years to the basketball reformation at Valpo...

We are 11-0 at home in game #23.  We are 4-5 on the road in game #23.    The last time we lost at home in the 23rd game of the season was to Green Bay in 1991-92, when we lost 76-48 (two weeks later, they beat us 69-25 at their place)

BUT wait!  this marks the first year since joining the HL that we have played a home game on #23.

We won at UWM last year 55-52; before that:
Lost at CSU
Won at GB
Lost at WSU
Lost at GB

as a footnote, the UIC game will be our 100th game in the Horizon League Regular Season... we are 56-42 so far...and still we are 1-game over .500 as a D-1 school at 531-530.

Milwaukee has been, well terrible is too kind of a word....really bad in the second half.  I think Valpo will win this one but won't blow them out of the gym.  I'll say a 13 point victory. Hoping for healthy bodies, better shooting, and just what would appear to be more effort then what I saw on TV the other night.

Those 3's and FT's that would not fall will begin to fall - at an alarming rate.

Valpo  - 83
UWM   - 53

I really hope that being in the friendly confines of the ARC will get us going again:

Valpo 81
Milwaukee 65

Bringing my dad to the game tonight...  Sure hope he gets to see a good showing.

I went to earlier UWM game and hope to see us start this game like we did that one.   Ryan drilled a three and it was contagious.   Everything looked easy after that.

I would really like to see us start the game with Carolina baseline pick alley oop to Ryan to get him started. Short of that, something easy for him early and lots of post touches early for KVW. If we do that, then maybe the clutching by Bogan, Dority and Coleman will turn into fluid, non-thinking 3 attempts that fall through the twine like a winter's soft snow. Also Jordan -- some parabolas on your shots.

It was awesome!  And it just seems to get everyone else going.  ( But i have to agree with 84 - running plays to Kevin early and a set play to get Ryan something early seems to be important for us.)

every night - without post touches, it is real easy to sit on our perimeter guys. the inside-out game is what we should strive for on most possessions.

So, I'm getting intermittent video with lots of blue circles and then into the action.  Two questions:  I'm getting the game on a computer without much RAM and my wireless router is about 7 years old.  suggestions? or are you all having the same issues?  Before i ran out and dropped a grand I thought I would ask!!

I've had no trouble with the HLN feed tonight.  It's done well.

If you're concerned about the wireless router, can you try plugging into it directly?  Even at seven years it may be adequate.  A seven year old computer might be a bigger problem, perhaps depending on what OS you're running.

Well, its a 10"er with one GB of memory.  Only about 3 years old though.  The comcast guy indicated that my router may be failing.

If you don't have a second ethernet cable, you could unplug the ethernet router, and try plugging it directly into your laptop.

Good to see a solid game for Bobby, and lots of decent minutes for Vashil too (only missed one dunk of three attempts!).

Fewest points Valpo's ever allowed in a Horizon League game.

Vashil tried a dunk (boinked but...) with under a minute left and a humongous lead.  (Shades of McCallum ??????).  Us Valpoites need to be careful about throwing stones at classless UDM.

There is so much more to it than even that.  In addition to the dunking nonsense, McCallum averaged 30 minutes a game in 40 and 50 point wins over YSU and UIC.  Detroit continued to fast break throughout both regardless of the lead.  They never took the air out of the ball to and extend offensive possessions to the end of the shot clock like we did tonight in the last 5 minutes.   They had alley-oops to the dunking showboat.  They continued their shark frenzy long after the opponent was dead and consumed.  They so showed up YSU trying to get to 100 points that Slocum was in McCallum's face about it.

I am a firm believer in the law of reciprocity.  A day of reckoning is coming.

I enjoyed beating them on their home court. I loved coming from behind 20 points and beating them on their home court. They must have been stunned and then starting blaming each other in the locker room.

BTW, With that win... Valpo extends it's streak to 12-0 at Home in the 23rd game of the season dating back 21 years...just saying...

So, Looking ahead to game #24 on the schedule... over the past 20 years...

We are 6-3 at home and 6-5 on the road, 12-8 overall, BUT, we are 0-2 when playing UIC in the 24th game of the season, with both losses at the Pavilion.

Anyway...17-6... been a while since were at this record...

2001-02, Ended the Season 8-2, Losing to Kentucky in the NCAA in St. Louis
2000-01, Ended the Season 7-2, Losing to Southern Utah in the Championship game in Ft. Wayne... no Post Season at 24-8
1998-99, Ended the Season 6-3, Losing to Maryland in the NCAA in Orlando
1994-95, Ended the Season 3-2, Beating Western Illinois in the MidCon Tournament in the ARC...No Post Season at 20-8
1993-94, Ended the Season 3-2, Losing to UIC in Round @ of the MidCon at the Rosemont ... No Post Season at 20-8

The only recent year we've been any better:
1996-97, we were 18-5, ended 6-2, losing to BC in SLC

It was one of those games where everything seemed to be going in the basket, even the most awkward shots, but this had to be the shot of the night. I snapped this picture just as Kevin was about to release the ball and fall flat on his back to watch the ball go through the net.

Good, I am not the only night owl that saw that  :).

This game will hopefully be a confidence booster for Bogan and Boggs.  Good to see Vashil get some minutes, as he really needs game time to improve.  I think that he can be a decent Antti-like player by his SR year, if he can get a little bit better hook shot and better hands.

Props to Valpo Athletics (re: Aaron Leavitt) for getting the highlight to ESPN. Normally you need to have some sort of crazy dunk, or just be named Lebron or Durant, to get on ESPN Top 10. It's fitting that Van Wijk's Top 10 moment comes one year after he was on Top 10 for getting absolutely posterized by Doug Anderson.

Almost exactly one year ago, too, if I'm right. I want to say it was about this time of the year when that happened.

Thanks for the list of 17-6 starts.     The  2001-2002 team was the last big hope to win an NCAA game.  Lubos was a senior and Raitis Grafs a junior.  But they hit the Kentucky buzzsaw and I think UK won the whole thing that year after underachieving.    We were all kind of down on Lubos for a bad game afterward, but the long arms of Teyshawn Prince were guarding him every step.
One more note......the Sweet 16 team actually lost to SLU in January and laid an egg at UIC so stubbing your toe doesn't block a good last month.

I seem to recall Raitis had a pretty good game, and I definitely recall Jared Nuness hitting a 3 or two to draw Valpo within 9 with 2 minutes to go (or something like that).  It was his last game in a Crusader uniform and he was the last remaining member of the sweet sixteen team.

Ben had a great shooting game against Milwaukee, but he can be thankful that in basketball, unlike other sports, points aren't deducted for style. On this 3-point shot by Ben, I think Ryan was whispering to Buggs: "Crikey, I believe he's attempting a Double Axel!"

Kentucky did not go to FF that year. Maryland won it that year with Juan Dixon in 2002, and was FF the year before. We seemed to have a habit of playing teams that were or would be very successful. We played Mich St the year Mateen Cleaves won it in the 1st rd. Raitis had a good game. We played at Syracuse the year Mello won it. Uk that year was very beatable and we were given a solid chance to win, but Tayshaun was on early and their point beat us late. We couldn't hit open 3s all afternoon. Interesting note from that pod was Kansas played in the evening, and Marquette and DWade were after our game. Kansas and Marquette were in FF in 2003.

I like this picture I took of Bobby hitting his 3-point shot, not because it is a great photo, since I'd rate it as average, but mostly for the reactions of the two boys just over Bobby's right shoulder. One has his hands up with joy and the other has his hands holding his head almost Home Alone style, as if to say "Oh, No!"

One thing that struck me the other night was how hopelessly overmatched Milw was.  Had we chosen to run up the score (which thankfully Bryce has too much character to do), the spread pretty easily could have been 40 points, or more.  It just goes to show how quickly a good program can fall on hard times.  I think we will always be competitive as long as Bryce stays, but finding the right replacement when he leaves will be absolutely critical to the future of the program.

Agree, finding that replacement for Bryce will be critical.  And, for the first time in many moons, it won't end with a Drew.  I'm sure that the replacement won't come far from the "Valpo Way", though.

Thanks for posting the highlights--my favorite, though, comes at 1:12, when, after Buggs hits the 3, the player guarding him looks at Jeter for a couple seconds as if to say "i thought you told me i didn't need to guard him out there"
