Title: Valpo - Youngstown Game Thread - 2/26
Post by: talksalot on February 21, 2013, 06:40:53 PM
From the Twitter world...
Will Haskett ‏@willhaskett
The Kendrick Perry knee injury at YSU sort of sums up their HL season... What could have been.

Valpo win Tues wraps 1 seed "@JoeScalzo1: YSU's Kendrick Perry may miss rest of regular season with knee injury suffered in Wed practice."

Oh man. RT @JoeScalzo1: Breaking: YSU guard Kendrick Perry [may] miss rest of regular season with knee injury he suffered during practice.

Breaking: YSU guard Kendrick Perry will miss rest of regular season with knee injury he suffered during Wednesday's practice.

Sources tell me that YSU's Kendrick Perry will miss the final three games of the regular season with a knee injury

OK... top that for your news of the night!!

So, if they lose one more starter, they'll be able to spot us 15 points, and still come back to tie the game?

When you lose a First team all conference player it is gigantic.  Still, Loyola had lost a first teamer in Avercamp and they gave us a serious run.  It sure will help but sometimes the other players rally to support each other in the face of the loss.

In addition to the opportunity to clinch the #1 seed in the YSU game, it will also be Senior Night, recognizing a large and excellent class. I had some free time this afternoon, so I put together a slide show from my photos of the seniors that appeared in this forum over the year. I also include below a photo of each senior as a sample. I hope you enjoy: http://celebratingvalposeniors.wordpress.com/ (http://celebratingvalposeniors.wordpress.com/)

We'll finally get the answer to the question:  will YSU miss Kendrick Perry more than Journey missed Steve Perry?

Maybe Arnel will suit up for YSU...  He could sing "separate ways" as a senior send off and "wheel in the sky" as a welcome to next years freshman.....  It would be legen........   Wait for it......

Welllllll... We probably still should practice... I see YST dropped 86 on Central Michigan in the BBuster game, granted, Senior Day...but... they will not roll over for us...They are fighting for a decent seed... Bellin scored 20, Eargle scored 20, Cole with 12 pts and 12 assists, overall 21 of 32 from inside the 3pt range, 9-18 from three... granted, it was the Chippewas, who are now 1-10 on the road and an rippy of 261.

NOW, the good news... Game #30 on the season...

Going back through years... since the ARC opened... we are 12-4 in game #30 on the season...  We have only played that many games 16 times in the past 27 seasons (and only once ['46-'47] before that).  In those 16 games, we are 4-1 at home, 0-2 on the road... and 8-1 on Neutral Courts, the Mid Con Tournament games... We have played the 'guins once in game #30...2008-09, we beat them in the ARC 67-59.

Thanks wh and talksalot for your kind comments on the photos. I don't know if players ever check this forum, and I think I'd sometimes advise them not to do so. However, I hope someone who speaks with the players will pass along the site for the slide show celebrating this senior class, since I think they would enjoy the pictures as well: http://celebratingvalposeniors.wordpress.com/ (http://celebratingvalposeniors.wordpress.com/)

Found this piece in the Torch on the student section at the Detroit game: http://www.valpotorch.com/sports/article_8ae35a8a-7d46-11e2-998a-0019bb30f31a.html (http://www.valpotorch.com/sports/article_8ae35a8a-7d46-11e2-998a-0019bb30f31a.html)

All the reviews on this forum were pretty positive about the student turnout and support. This article, however, concerns some poor behavior, including the following:
QuoteThe presence of a group of intoxicated football players in the front of the student section did nothing but detract from the game experience. This statement is not meant to be a sweeping generalization of football players, but a simple admission of the events in the front part of the Valparaizone last Saturday night and the involvement of members of VU's football team. (Coach Carlson, I am sorry that you have to deal with this, but you should probably advise your guys to win a few more games before they conduct themselves in that manner on national TV.) I will also say it is entirely possible that other members of the Valparaizone were intoxicated on Saturday night – it was simply the presence of certain late arriving people at the front of the section who drew the most attention to themselves (presumably for ESPN's cameras) and displayed dramatic signs of intoxication. How our athletes behave, on and off the field, is a reflection of VU and our athletics program, and such behavior is far from appropriate.
Give the whole piece a read if you have a chance. It covers a plethora of other topics, with the note about the football players standing out. Hope we have a good group of students for Tuesday's big game. So does the writer of the piece.
QuoteAnd finally, Senior Night is this Tuesday. Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7:05 pm. The final regular season home game in the ARC for seniors Will Bogan, Erik Buggs, Ben Boggs, Matt Kenney, Kevin Van Wijk and Ryan Broekhoff. You can't miss that. Make it happen.

The progress that the Valparizone has made this season is incredible and inspiring. But there is more work to be done. And you are the ones who can get it done.

Down here in Southwest Florida, we have come up with a bunch of creative ways to avoid calling people "old".

(Sidebar:  no one down here gives the pope any flak for retiring at almost 86.  people down here at that age have been retired AT LEAST 25 years, not working at one of the three most difficult jobs in the world.)

We all know Valpo is the oldest team in the country blah blah decrepit blah.

BUT what we haven't made a big enough deal over is that we are the most EXPERIENCED team in the country.  This is measured by what minutes are played by whom.  (We are more than 3 times more experienced than Texas, the least experienced in the country, which describes why they suck.  comical sound effect: kaBONGo! But I digress!)

Poking around on StatSheet (it's like getting caught in a YouTube timewarp if you're a geek) reveals this:
http://statsheet.com/mcb/stattracker/experience/teams (http://statsheet.com/mcb/stattracker/experience/teams)

Click "rank" twice to reorder.

We are so far ahead that the gap between us and number 2 (Middle Tenn) is as wide as the gap between #2 and #20.

Anyone else think this bodes well for March?

These are young adults in the prime of their youth. You honestly don't think every student section in college basketball contains intoxicated students. Its not just basketball, think out football and all that tailgating. This writer seems like a prude...no blood no foul. I don't expect the student section at valpo to live above the influence...keep it up best student section of the year. Football players or not they are young and having fun YOLO

Gotta get to March first.  Experience didn't help much in the last game against Detroit.  hashtag: bitterness

Although I agree that experience makes a big difference, especially in college basketball.  There is a huge difference between a 22 (or 24 KVW) year old and an 18 year old maturity-wise and that will hopefully play out to our advantage as the season concludes.

If anything we could use MORE obnoxious football players in the front row yelling at the refs and being ridiculous, instead of creeper Phil in the front row yelling 'WARM UP THE BUS' halfway through the first half and waving his crutches in the air.

One experience these seniors have never had that many fans might take for granted is that they have zero experience playing in the NCAA Tourney. Many of us fans who remember that Valpo went to the NCAA tournament several years in a row up to 2004 might forget that fact that just because we have experienced the Big Dance as fans doesn't mean the seniors know anything about how to play in the Big Dance.

Remember these are the seniors that have committed high numbers of turnovers in many games and that is very uncharacteristic of a senior laden team.

Totally agree with this sentiment. When is it good to celebrate public intoxication? It's when other people (including older folks) acknowledge that younger people "in the prime of their youth" will be getting drunk in public that younger people get the idea that it's okay and then it gets out of hand so easily.

Hello all...

I am VERY disappointed but there is a travel advisory for the areas around Milwaukee and Chicago.   At this point, my plan on attending is about 50/50.

I really feel bad because I wanted to show my support of this senior group.  They deserve it because I have enjoyed watching them play so much.

If I do decide not to attend I will have 3 seats in section C behind the team available.

Although there is currently sleet falling in Valpo, the NWI Times has now updated its forecast to a more favorable accumulation prediction of snow, "Winter Storm Could Largely Spare NWI": "A winter storm blowing toward the Chicago area could leave up to 6 inches of snow behind in some areas, but Northwest Indiana may get little more than a dusting...." http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/illinois/meteorologist-winter-storm-could-largely-spare-nwi/article_75f49dbd-7c3e-51a8-bbda-2c9fdec2b3c4.html (http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/illinois/meteorologist-winter-storm-could-largely-spare-nwi/article_75f49dbd-7c3e-51a8-bbda-2c9fdec2b3c4.html)

From the article, it looks like Perry could possibly try to play given that he participated in some practice.  That would seem somewhat foolish for YSU since he is more critical to them in the conference tournament than this game.

Valpo, in my view, has not historically done well in these  "finish the deal" opportunities.  Certainly the season where they beat Missouri State and then lost the conference title comes to mind.  It would be great to see a solid performance where Valpo confidently wins by 10+ to lock up the conference title.

As far as snow goes, we are getting our second snowstorm of close to a foot today.  Unlike Chicago and Valpo where a foot of snow is an annoyance, everything shuts down in Lawrence for 24-48 hours.  Of course everyone is probably still happy from last night's amazing win at Iowa State.

The other part of the problem with the Bracketbuster game against Missouri State....we had 3 games in a matter of 5 days, and if I remember correctly, it was 2 road games of significant travel distance, and the home game with Missouri State, and that hurt us when it mattered most.

In terms of the attendance issues in November thru early January, it is the same as any of the teams in lower conferences. Many of the schools in the NEC, MEAC, MAAC, A-Sun, Big West, and such have to play a lot of road games then because the teams they want to play won't travel, i.e. Syracuse, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Georgetown, because they have the money that we want, so they can draw the big numbers to their arenas, compared to our "penitentiaries", and that adds to our basketball budget. Sometimes you just have to deal with the fact that we're not going to get the big name teams to come to little Valparaiso, Indiana because they can make more money with a sold out home game, than we can with a sold out home game.

Also, overchanging for games that aren't going to make a huge dent in attendance interest doesn't help a program like Valpo. It's essentially like an MLB or NFL team upping the price of tickets, in most cases they do it because the owners want a little more money lining their greased palms, or to give excuse to sign an overpriced free agent that won't be anything more than a distraction in the team chemistry.

For those driving to Valpo, be wary of the ice more than the snow. Latest predictions have the area getting an inch or two of snow, but a potentially hazardous amount of sleet. Drive safe and cheer loudly!

Seems like a lot will depend on a degree or two of temperature difference.  Despite the hail/sleet this morning, the roads were OK in town.

Hopefully things will be salted ahead of time and the roads will stay wet, not frozen, even if the temperature drops.  I see forecasts now for a period of heavy snow in the next hour or two, and lighter stuff (probably more melting than accumulating, by current temperature forecasts) on through the evening and overnight.

The current forecast seems to be that air temperatures will stay above freezing.

true--heck, WE can make more money being the road team than being the home team, I would imagine at times.

This is the current radar map.  I think its insane with how many colors there are.

Our thunderstorms can be pretty crazy looking.  I hear that it has something to do with the heat and precipitation mixing?  We get lightning that lights up the sky with 10-12 bolts at once every so often.  It isn't that vertical lightning, but looks horizontal at times.

Earlier in this thread, I posted a Torch Op/Ed about the student section at the Detroit game. The author spent time pointing out the effect (negative in his opinion) of a group of intoxicated football players at the front of the group, while also praising the general atmosphere of the student section and encouraging its improvement as time moves on.

Just a moment ago, Matt Kenney tried to drum up some support heading into tonight's game. The following paragraph is a collection of tweets sent on Matt's account, referencing the article and even borrowing a small line from it (I assume the last bit is simply meant to be gender inclusive):

The student section is suppose to be loud, rowdy and yell things at the other team. That's what they do. There wasn't one point in the game where I thought they were out of control or "detracting from the game experience" They simply were just having fun and enjoying the game, while at the same time supporting their school. I hope they continue to come and support us and don't let one guys opinion keep them away. Keep it up fellas! We appreciate the support! That goes for the ladies in the student section as well!

Let's hope we get some students to the ARC tonight for him, the other seniors, and the rest of the program! LET'S WIN A TITLE!

It sounds like they won't be trying for a second redshirt year then, if he is expected to be in uniform.  Rossi has such a great-looking shot, I want to see it added to our arsenal for a few minutes here and there when we are struggling from 3!  Even if he is suspect on defense, just having someone come in and make a shot or two can change the other guy's mentality when they are taking their shots

Down by 13 and then come back to down 7 at the half.     A loss on senior night would be pretty devastating especially if it leads to coughing up the #1 seed and home court.

Attendance was miserable, and the students who didn't show up should be ashamed.  Snow or no snow, you can walk from the dorms.  Get off your a$$e$ and away from your computer/iPhone/iPad, and see something in real life.

Great comeback, and we were fortunate that YSU came back to earth in the second half.  They hit so many absurd shots in the first half, that you had to just laugh it off.  Let's clinch the outright title at GB, as they are playing for the 3 seed still, and will come to play.  If GB wins, I believe they are the 3, with a loss, the 4.  We don't want to share the title with Detroit, so kick some a$$ in GB!!  It's amazing to think that this should have been our third regular season title in a row, outside of a dumb loss to Loyola two seasons ago.  I will take the 2 and an NCAA this year though!

For a regular mid-week conference game on a snowy/slushy night I'd say the upper deck didn't look too bad.  BB had a decent number, and even AA had some folks.

For senior night, a bigger crowd would have been good.  But, not a disaster.

Quote from: valpotx on February 26, 2013, 09:51:43 PMAttendance was miserable, and the students who didn't show up should be ashamed.

I heard some students talking it up today, and saw at least one of mine in the student section.  It really is a very busy week academically - just before spring break.  I have a lot of trouble faulting students who were focusing on their classes instead of going to the game.  Is it possible to do both?  Sure - and kudos to those who managed.

Ridiculous shooting by the Penguins in the first half - and very good for the Crusaders to come back for a fairly comfortable lead in the end.

Very good to see Rowdy putting up big numbers.  I'm particularly happy to see him working hard on rebounds again - maybe the hips feeling better, or he's decided to let it all hang out? _Three_ offensive... tips... all off Buggs missed FT's?  Do those count as rebounds?  Did Rowdy save _every one_ of Buggs missed FT's?.  Crazy that he managed ten rebounds while KVW pulled down a sick 14 simultaneously.

Congrats on the championship!

Minnesota must not have classes because their student section was there tonight. Its truely sad that we were actually in the running for best student section in the country. I mean sure a few times a year its crazy but on most nights its average. The box score attendance was 3410 but I'm assuming that's paid attendance. The upper deck was maybe 10% full. The weather was that bad at least in valpo. Somethings gotta give why isn't this community and student body excited about college basketball.

I agree. In Valpo the weather wasn't that bad. The roads were drivable, and had been treated, and yes, it was messy, but it wasn't nearly as slick as I thought it might be. Now driving all the way to Michigan City or all the way from Milwaukee, through Chicago, to Valpo might have been a different story with the weather and snowfall amounts being different in different areas near Valpo.

Got to agree that from our inconsistent student turnout this is no "top student section" - sorry.   Wish I could say the student section was....

As for the game - YSU could not miss in the first.  Officiating sucked...   We came out to play in the second half.    CONGRATS TEAM!!!!

That's OK. The team was a joke in the first half, too. I've been attending nearly every Valpo home game and a lot of roadies for the past 10 years and that's the first time in those 10 years that I felt I had to leave at halftime. What an embarrassment.

After the first half, YSU was shooting 58.3% FG and 60% 3PT. Everything was bouncing in for them. Valpo, on the other hand, had balls that rattled in and out at least 4-5 times. Rebounds were also bouncing their way. It was incredibly frustrating watching the first half, but Valpo just dominated the game from the last 2:46 of the first half to the end of the game. It's not the first time Valpo was down by 12 in the first half, and down by 7 to close the half. At least we're not Detroit - they got bailed out by bad free throw shooting from Loyola, and won it on a last second layup.

Mildew, you picked a name that fits your attitude.     I was more embarrassed for the seniors' families after the game.    HLN kept their webcast through the senior comments to the crowd.   Matt Kenney had  60 family members there.   So that was probably 10% of the people who stayed to celebrate and applaud.   I hope no families of our new signees came out.   They might suggest the kid de-commit.

These seniors were not the greatest athletes I have seen at Valpo.   But they were champions twice.  Past teams won the MID-CON.   This team won the Horizon, a good mid-major conference, TWICE!!   They busted their tails.   What did we get in theiR LAST HOME GAME AND from a TITLE CLINCHING GAME from the students and non-chairbacks?   Freakin' YAWNS and CRICKETS!!

One thing that did puzzle me in the post-game recognition.   None of the guys said "come back a week from Saturday!!!"   They all seem to have either picked up Bryce's mild demeanor or he and Home recruit that modest manner.    I bet Van Vijk is the spark when they need it.

It seems at home we always start off awesome in the first 5 mins, the we struggle a bit. Rowdy although he ended with a great games had a few times where he looked outta sync. Its not the end of the world but if he was completely locked in this game could have been a 30 point victory. It also seems at times our guys get baseline happy and that gets frustrating. Basically we have to beat detroit to get to the ncaa tourny. I think we will make it to the championship easily but detroit will be waiting. Kvw has been the heart and soul of this team this season although with out buggs and rowdy he wouldn't get the looks he does. He owned the paint early last night and the made nice adjustments. I liked how buggs drained a 3 early, if he could shoot 30% from downtown he would be the best point in the confrence if he isn't already. I don't know if it would help, but if valpo had a big digital billboard by the new welcoming center that could advertise the games maybe we could draw some more fans. Just a poor turnout last night.

Over the years, have there been bridges burned between the community and University administration that have kept community members away from anything at the university? As was mentioned before, possibility that many community members don't want to shell out $20 a ticket to take 4 family members to a game, where they are in the cheap seats, and feel like they aren't a crucial part of the atmosphere...

Students are going to be what they are about these games. It has always been the case that some students put academics before athletics during big exam and project weeks. Especially now with so much to prove in terms of getting that job that pays back the student loans or validates the scholarships these kids received, with college costs being atmospheric, many Valpo students are going to focus more on the aspects of college that will get them a job, i.e. grades and academic performance, over attendance at a basketball game.

My favorite is when Eargle blocks Kevin, he gets the ball back, scores, and goes D-Generation X on the celebration. "LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLet's ready to suck iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit! And if you're not down with that, we've got two words for ya! (go to :28 in the video) SUCK IT!"

For a reference point, you can get Mavs tickets for $12-$15 in the top section at the AAC.  Obviously, these seats are a bit higher up than the mezz, but $20 does seem a bit much.  Wouldn't you rather charge less for admission, and hope that you have a bigger crowd for support, and possibly more concessions?

Can't speak to bridges burnt.

But an esteemed academic school like Duke with 6400 undergrads packs the Cameron Crazy section night after night.  But then, I guess winning year after year at their level is an addicting potion.  On the other hand, isn't it all relative?  We have a winner in the BB program.  We have appealing star power in kids like Rowdy and Kevin. We have a good academic rep.  We are in a competitive conference. We have close to 3000 undergrads.  We should be able to consistently pack the 'Zone, which by my guess is about 1/2 that of Duke's.  But we can't do it consistently.  To me part of it is the culture that is fostered by the university.  That culture is underscored by that Torch Op/Ed piece last week and things like dry tailgating at FB games.  All of these things have a chilling affect on people letting loose and coming for the dramatic impact of game night at the ARC.  I'll bet  a dozen donuts that the FB team was called on the carpet because of the Op/Ed piece, and they did what I would do -- say screw it, we tried to juice up the place and this is what we get for it?  Sad thing about that is that the chilling affect had two repercussions:  it curtailed the enthusiasm of the 'Zone by their organized absence and it disrupted a bonding moment for a FB team that needs all the bonding it can muster.

The athletic promotions people have two constituencies:  students and everyone else.  I'm sure that there is more that can always be done for "everyone else."  But more dedicated promotion to the students is essential to keep the 'Zone filled all the time and filled to overflowing for the biggies.  We've already discussed upgrading and improving the pep band -- they should be given whatever is needed to make them the loudest, best and most entertaining (i.e., antics, costumes, etc.) in the HL.  The students need to learn (be taught?) that they are an extension of team on the floor and they have a stake in every basket, forced turnover, rebound, etc.  Rowdy said it in his senior speech -- they feed off the 'Zone.

Really thought that Dority made some big plays last night.  He had some very nice drives and hit a big 3 that in my mind created some separation.  I think you can tell that the ankle is much better especially on D where he was able, for the most part, to stay in front of his man.  His minutes are so critical to the success of this team, we need him healthy and confident.

weather was undoubtedly a factor
Just an excuse.  Weather wasn't bad for a fan!

I drove from the Chicago suburbs and it was pretty hairy at times.  traffic was slow and there were a few bad accidents.  I wouldn't be surprised if many did not make the trip from this area because of the weather.

I recall seeing more in previous years about "family packs" of tickets that included tickets and food for a very inexpensive price.  Didn't see as much of that this year.  Also don't think there was as many community nights.  In the last year or two it seemed like at almost every other game there was little kids playing at halftime or some kind of church group at the game.  This year it seems as though more community groups are singing the anthem but thats about it.  Perhaps the administration felt that they didn't need to offer as many of these types of promos based on the success of the team?  Seems to me it would be better to give away free tickets than see the stands empty.

The details I turned up quickly are from 2010
http://www.valpoathletics.com/mbasketball/news/2010-11/10352/valparaiso-to-hold-first-of-four-family-nights-saturday-night/ (http://www.valpoathletics.com/mbasketball/news/2010-11/10352/valparaiso-to-hold-first-of-four-family-nights-saturday-night/)
"Families may purchase four tickets in the mezzanine and $20 in concessions vouchers for just $28.  Lower level bleacher seating packages are also available for $48. "
There were four that season.

I think there were at least two of these nights this season as well, but I don't know the details nor how well publicized they were.

Since we're comparing ticket prices with other venues: I happened to look at St. Mary's last home game of the season, against Santa Clara (not one of the top names in the WCC) on Saturday.  It's $25 for general admission to their top-most seating section.  $35 gets you a reserved seat in the bottom of that section.

I'll say, I work in Valpo, so the roads weren't that bad.  After the game though I went to Hammond and then back down to St. John.  If you live in Valpo, there is 0 excuse for not coming to the game last night, the roads in Valpo were fine.  Slushy, but no less drivable than if it was raining.  I would venture to say the same for Chesterton and Portage.  Now if you're a little further out, I understand to an extent.  94 and 49 weren't terrible after the game, but I don't know how they were pre-game.

Came from Chicagoland and the closer to Valpo we got, the better the roads. The main roads/expressways were wet, yet the biggest problem was the bad accident on 80/94 around I-65. It took about 30 minutes to go 2 miles. Luckily we were able to slide over and jump on 65 or we wouldn't have made the game til the 2nd half. Of course the only reason we made it out was because the weather was bad enough in Chicago area to cancel the basketball game I was supposed to coach. It was an awesome night honoring the seniors for those who were there and the roads were fine driving home afterwards!

Great post.

More thoughts.

We either have a student section full of lame people that write articles in the torch specifically calling out fans who showed up with enthusiasm. OR we have students who aren't going to bother showing up because they'll get called out for attending a sporting event with alcohol in their system. I've NEVER EVER EVER heard of ANYONE attending a SPORTING EVENT after/while drinking! Maybe it's because I'm from Wisconsin and we think it's customary to pregame a wake, but I'm failing to see how screaming football players in the student section makes our school look bad on TV. If anything it makes us look better compared to what we've had before in the front row. I'd be inclined to believe this person has never been to Lambeau or Wrigley game either. They'd probably write another crappy article in the torch about how sports should be subjected to the 21st amendment.

I hope they say "sorry I'm not sorry" and come to more games. Students will come to more games if they know it's a rowdy environment. If that means some fans are drunk, then so be it. Suck it up, and worry about cheering on your team instead of worrying about the other people cheering on the team.

A passionate campus should have the capacity to be passionate about everything Valpo.  Is the Valpo community truly passionate about anything?  We hear there is a passion for excellence, but is it true or just words?

I envy all of you alums within a decent drive of campus.  I also recall 6000 at VU football games against Indiana State, Ball State, Evansville and Butler, etc., and a filled newly expanded Hilltop Gym during the Bartow era.  There certainly was passion then.

A lot of parochial attitudes in the Vale of Paradise. Full of IU, Purdue and ND fans (alumni and otherwise), who will never see VU as worthy of following.  It is also "VHS-obsessed."

The most depressing thing about this is the apparent truism that people need to get intoxicated in order to bring the passion at the game.

If they were drunk, the only remaining question is: were they doing anything inappropriately disruptive?  By the way, there is a difference between drinking and being drunk.  That said, I have a few questions for a few people involved in this kerfuffle:

1.  Nate King sits on the opposite end of the court from the student section, so how does he know they were intoxicated?  (My guess: he was told)
2.  Matt Kenney presumably had more important things to focus on than scrutinizing the student section enough to be able to say with any certainty that they were doing nothing wrong.  Hell, I was there with no responsibilities whatsoever, and I had better things to focus on than that.  I didn't notice anything untoward, but I was too busy watching the game.  Both of us spent an inordinate amount of time on the opposite end of the court concentration on the game.  Neither one of us has any idea what all went on over there.  So why should I put much stock in his tweet fest in support of the FB players.

Furthermore, nobody is talking about how Nate King also agrees with some of you here about the student section not bringing the heat when Detroit made their move.

Finally, he saved his harshest critique for event staff, not the FB players.

I have no idea whether they were intoxicated or not.  I'm not taking a position on that one way or another (I do seem to recall the FB program has a somewhat checkered past, though).  If nothing inappropriate happened, I'm satisfied.

What annoys me is this notion that people getting intoxicated is worthy of celebration because it happens everywhere or because it is too hard to cheer and make noise otherwise.

I never found that to be true for me.

Unfortunately, it may have sounded in my comments like I was endorsing alcohol consumption as the preferred medium of choice for game time stimulation.  Not so, although as I read STL's viewpoint I can see how that could come across.  What I was trying to get across was the chilling affect of attitudes reflected by my chosen examples (and maybe there are others that I should/could have cited) which may contribute to a lack of desire to attend games or, once there, inhibiting people from letting go, enjoying, and being vocal and demonstrative fans.  Meaning that perhaps in the backs of people's (students mainly) minds might be this little voice saying "don't get too involved, stay a little restrained," because that's what the perceived behavioral expectation is at Valpo.  And those who consider ignoring that little voice might fear criticism.  Of course, all of this is conjecture on my part.  I wasn't there.  Just some thoughts in an effort to try to explain some of the observations others expressed. After all, once or twice a week in the winter, THE place to be for 2-3 hours should be, without question, the ARC. Yet, most agree that isn't quite the case right now.

I can feature Nate King being the only one silenced over this.  I'm having trouble seeing his editorial silencing anyone.

I can also feature the idea of this editorial not being entirely his.

I read the editorial again last night and I noticed that he wasn't so much upset at the alleged "drunkenness" as he was at the thought that there was a protocol to the Valparaizone that these FB players flouted, sauntering in at the last minute and taking places away from students who waited in line (I witnessed that line and it was long).  Again, I have no idea if that's true or not.

What I do know is that I've yet to read or hear anyone challenging any of the actual assertions in the editorial, save for a twitter friend who says he saw nothing over the line.  I'm inclined to accept that because the other thing I know is that there was no time during the game when the referees stopped play to eject one of them.  There was no announcement by John Bawker reiterating the expected behavior by fans (which he gives before every game).  Thus, I deduce there couldn't have been anything too terribly extreme going on.  Furthermore, TV cameras are inclined, at least in some sports, to avert the viewer's eyes from shenanigans anyway.

What concerns me is: One guy writes an editorial and the whole campus is up in arms.  If anyone's in for the big chill, it's him.  That's what I'm thinking.

As a student of this University, a friend of Nate King, and someone who has attended every single home game (while not on holiday breaks), I think it is getting to a point of utter ridiculousness that this discussion continues.

Yes, it was nice to have some great energy from the possibly drunk football players, but some of the shenanigans went too far, and I agree with Nate on this point. Not only were they on the basketball court during the "Harlem Shake," but the infamous beach ball landed on the court earlier, and someone chucked an empty bottle at the Detroit bench. Not only is this dangerous, but it's just terrible sportsmanship. It's not something Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Utah State or any of the other exciting student sections in the country do.

I arrived at the ARC around 3:40 and waited outside for the twenty minutes before getting inside to wait another hour. Yet, at five, these players get the "prime" seats on the floor. I can't disagree with this point either.

And finally, aside from personally paying students to come, what good does it do to continue to discuss the low attendance? Has it ever occurred to any of you people that not everyone at this University likes basketball? Would you rather have 100 people super focused on the game, or 500 all on their cell phones and not paying attention at all? With evening classes, papers, exams, meetings, and jobs, some people just can't make it to the games, especially on a Tuesday night, even if it is Senior Night. All of you that are not students have absolutely no control over this, so continuing to see this discussed is really start to make me angry.

We are 23-7 (12-3), we are hosting another conference tournament, we have the premier team in the Horizon League. How about we focus on that?

This sounds like a legitimate beef.  With event management, as Nate King said in his opinion piece.  Respecting the line makes sense - perhaps with exceptions for people with painted chests, superhero costumes, etc.

Interesting to hear the shenanigans listed!   The tricycles and whatever on the court would have been bad had we gotten a technical.  But, given that we didn't... tempting to write it off as goofy hijinks more or less in the spirit of the, apparently officially sanctioned, "Shake" video.

From way up in AA the beach ball looked pretty innocent.  But, I suppose if they _intentionally_ threw it on the court...

Throwing a bottle does sound bad.  Hopefully plastic?  But, that should probably get you ejected.  Is that what prompted the announcement?  It seemed a bit much for just the beach ball.

Well put.

Quote from: jloose128 on February 28, 2013, 03:16:45 PMbut the infamous beach ball landed on the court earlier, and someone chucked an empty bottle at the Detroit bench

If these things happened (I was there and I missed it -- I wouldn't know the Harlem Shake if it was pointed out to me, nor do I care to know it), then I think Nate was justified in raising his concerns.  The second thing mentioned here is incredibly stupid.

However, I would dispute the assertion that this discussion has become ridiculous.  It may have started out ridiculous, but it has gotten better, most notably by your contribution.  After all, in here, we're not preparing for Green Bay and the tourney.  We're multi-tasking fans.

See?  I even forgot the announcement ;)  Still can't remember it.

Yes, a plastic bottle hit the Detroit bench. Had they not been in timeout, there is no doubt in my mind there would have been a technical foul. At least the crazy people didn't come into contact with the Detroit players or coaches, that would not have been a good situation.

The beach ball was before the Harlem Shake incident. I myself was very confused when it happened, as I had not yet heard of this odd phenomenon. At one point, someone from the event staff took it away, and yet it somehow ended up back in the stands and ended up on the court. Another situation where we are lucky that a technical foul was not caused.

Speaking of Detroit, I find it humorous that they managed a whopping 1,357 for their Senior Night on Tuesday. The weather might have been bad in Detroit, but it's been pretty bad in Valpo too.

I have to say, as bad as this is or could have been, this looks like nothing compared to Kansas-Iowa State from earlier this week....

With evening classes, papers, exams, meetings, and jobs, some people just can't make it to the games, especially on a Tuesday night, even if it is Senior Night. All of you that are not students have absolutely no control over this, so continuing to see this discussed is really start to make me angry.

Amazing...the number of undergrads has increased dramatically since I graduated, yet we managed to pack the student section just about every game...even with evening classes, papers, exams, meetings and jobs.

The discussion is valid, but certainly nothing to get "angry" about.

That said, it's always nice to have current students post here and get their perspective so thank you for your thoughts.  I wish more would post.  Although, if we are having trouble getting students to the games, getting them on here might be impossible  :P

FYI for those not there - after the ref shooed the tricyclists off the court, someone from their coaching staff asked the ref to have us a tech.  He just smiled and shook his head from side to side as if to say not gonna happen.

I agree with your point 04, of course, as it sounds like you were in school around the same time as me.  Students had to sit at the top of the mezz because it was so crowded.  These things jloose lists as being taxing on a student, I would absolutely love to deal with again, instead of the stuff you deal with when you get to be 30+.  This discussion is VERY valid, as the student turnout is pathetic for most games.  As I have said many times, you add all that crap you just mentioned, plus 20-40 hours/week of baseball, 10-20 hours/week of volunteering at a local disability assistance center, and you have the schedule I did.  I made it to every game, and I didn't even like college basketball when I first set foot on campus, as we are a football and baseball state.  I feel absolutely no sympathy for college students who complain that they don't have time to do anything but school, as it was very easy for me in spite of all that I had to do.

I fully understand that some people aren't sports fans on campus, but getting a few hundred to a game shouldn't be a problem...

Personally, I missed out on studying for an exam, finishing homework for another class, and even completely skipping an important meeting in order to attend Tuesday's game and stay for the entirety of the post-game Senior Night festivities. I am in no way defending the student population that I wish was more interested in college basketball. However, your complaining about the turnout, valpotx, does absolutely nothing to this situation. Please continue to speculate on why the turnout is so bad, but don't you dare sit there and attack the majority without acknowledging the few of us that religiously attend every single game in addition to watching or at least following all the road games. I wish our number was greater, but it isn't. It's sad, it's terrible, but there is nothing to do but encourage people to go and hope they fall for it like valpotx did.

Kudos to jloose and all the other students who have made to all the games and sacrifice to do that. I really think we owe those students a huge debt of gratitude for being there and spurring the team to victories.

Please tell me where I have EVER attacked those that actually go to the games!  I always mention those that DON'T come out to the games because of various excuses, yet say that they are fans.  I have often said that I respect those that attend the games, and rather point my comments towards not getting the student stands full.  How can we not get 300 students at each game?  It doesn't have to be the same fans each time, but a few hundred students shouldn't be hard on a campus that is not a commuter-based school.  This is a fan message board, and what is the point of a message board if you can't complain about certain things?  I don't know how long you have read this board, but I am a staunch supporter of those that actually show up to VU sports.

As a background, I never once attended a HS basketball or volleyball game at my school, as I had no interest even though my friends played on the teams.  When I got to VU, I didn't think that would change.  However, when you live in an environment bubble such as college, that athletic pride should grow on you if you like sports.  I went to just about every volleyball game, men's and women's basketball game, soccer match, some softball, etc.  Everyone is always going to say, 'I am a ND fan,' or, 'I live IU sports.'  However, these people were just as avid VU sports fans when I was in school, since we lived and went to class with these athletes.  We had the other sport's athletes at our baseball games often, and we would go to theirs just the same.

Are the casual fans on campus now just more busy with Skype, their iPads, etc, to not leave their dorm room to live the campus athletic experience outside of the other activities?  How many campuses can say that they were able to interact with someone with the athletic quality of a Lubos Barton, Bryce Drew, Raitis Grafs, or Ryan Broekhoff on a daily basis?  Do you know how many larger schools would kill for that interaction?

Hello, and welcome to the ARC high schoolers. Please remember that if you accept our free entrance fee you may not play athletics at Valparaiso University....

By the way, that was not meant as an attack on you valpotx. People are legitimately both busy and not willing to sacrifice time to go to the games like a select few of us.

Not that easy. By offering free admission to anyone who qualifies as a prospective student-athlete, we are breaking ncaa rules, whether we would recruit them or they would play here or not. That part is irrelevant.

I would guess that you set a policy for cheap admission for a whole large group (e.g. High school students) it could not be seen as a recruiting violation as it does not discriminate for the benefit of any particular member of the group.  Does cheaper tuition at IU for students within the state violate NCAA rules?

If my thinking is befuddled, feel free to set me straight (as if anyone on the board needs permission).

"Letter to the Editor" in today's edition of the Torch written by Valpo volleyball player Sarah Dooms

QuoteTo Whom It May Concern:

Although I may be known as the type to get overly fired up about things, the subject matter discussed in the "Letter to VU Student Section," printed in last week's issue of The Torch, deserves my resentment.

In no way did the "group of intoxicated football players in the front of the student section" detract from the game experience. If anything, they enhanced it. Obviously we must lay to rest whether they were drunk or not. It's common knowledge that Valpo is a dry campus and drinking on anyone's part inside the ARC would be against those rules. However, let's also keep in mind that it's still a college campus. Like it or not, that's what happens. College kids drink. They see a successful basketball team they wish to support and an opportunity to go a little crazy in school spirit with their friends. Why would we discourage that?

Even though we've identified the rowdy group at the front of our student section as football players, that's not how they entered into the basketball game. They entered like everyone else, as hopeful and supportive fans of our men's basketball team. I'm more than sure the parentheticals used in the article directed towards Dale Carlson's apparent lack of control over his team should have been left out. The football team's record has nothing to do with their right and desire to support another team on campus. Did the group of guys who came to the game late and who stood in front of the student section do the nicest and most respectful thing? Of course not. But no one wants a nice and respectful student section. There's a reason there are no assigned seats and tickets distributed.

We want people to show up and cheer as loudly and creatively as they can for the duration of the game. Rules and stipulations on that will do nothing but create a civilized and nice student section, not something that any team on the court wishes to have. Allowing enthusiastic fans to the front of the student section, even when they didn't patiently wait their turn in line, was something I would have done, too. I applaud the ARC event staff. Thankfully, they didn't take their job too seriously and didn't choose to be every rowdy college kid's parent. Their job is to ensure safety and they did just that.

I would like to add apart from this response that I have the upmost respect for Nate King and his writing. This is in no way a personal attack, simply a difference of opinion.

Sincerely,
Sarah Dooms
VU Class of 2014

Well written by her...unfortunately, she doesn't seem to grasp that more than likely, if they were drunk, it is illegal for most college kids to do so (obviously only so many are 21+).  Saying that 'college kids drink' doesn't excuse breaking the law.  This is not to say that I waited until I was 21 either...but I wasn't putting my opinion in a paper that makes it sound like kids should be able to drink before 21 lol.  Even though I did it on occasion, I am a big proponent of it being at LEAST 21 to drink, as I truly had no clue what I was doing and the ramifications, and I was the 'smarter drinker/designated driver' most often.

I disagree a bit TX.  Here's what she wrote:
"Obviously we must lay to rest whether they were drunk or not. It's common knowledge that Valpo is a dry campus and drinking on anyone's part inside the ARC would be against those rules. However, let's also keep in mind that it's still a college campus. Like it or not, that's what happens. College kids drink.[/i]"  [I might add, that's what happens everywhere]

All she is doing is acknowledging, without proof either way, exactly what you mentioned. Were 30 FB players under the influence?  10?  2?  None?  Her point was, I believe, that there was energy there supplied by an identifiable group and she defended those kids who generated that energy and she is leaving it to others to determine the level (.00  or .08) of intoxication -- if any. I think also that she was rebutting a blanket indictment that may have had only some anecdotal or subjective basis.  She also is on solid ground in criticizing the cheap shot to Carlson on the team's record as irrelevant to the issue at hand.

But most of all I like to see kids standing behind their gut feelings (both Nick and Sarah).  So many in this generation do not.  I think we both agree on that.

She was off on one point that not a lot of people are aware of, we are technically no longer a dry campus. It is a wet campus but you cannot drink on campus, it has to be a closed container and it is allowed.

I remember that the Phi Sigs (I believe that was the name, was a smaller house) used to 'openly' advertise alcoholic parties by word of mouth.  My FR year, the VUPD busted one of these that I was at, and I was the only one who was not carted off to jail that night in the entire house lol (21 and under attendees).  The cop thought he had broken his alcohol detector when I blew into it (.0000), even being a smart a$$ to me when I said that I didn't have anything to drink before blowing into it.  This night was made possible by a football player friend who thought it would be funny to prank call 911 from the house phone...he never lived that down as it pretty much shut down that frat for my time on campus, and he ended up transferring after SO year.  They routinely had these types of parties, which probably wasn't too different from a few others.  The funniest thing about it, in looking back, is that we all hid in various spots throughout the house when we saw and heard them outside (VUPD).  My friends and I ended up in some 'hidden' room area, and I remember thinking the whole time that I didn't need to be hiding.  This is probably why the cop didn't believe it when I said that I hadn't done anything with alcohol that night  :)

I've heard about this for a few years.  I think Heckler is opening up the possibility of having alcohol at campus events for alumni, fundraising, etc.

they have done it in the past, but it was extremely limited. but that was different than the 'dry campus' policy regarding students. in these past events, locations and access were controlled, but this makes it sound as though the access will be more general, assuming those trying are over the age of 21.

I believe the policy for fundraising and alumni events was that they had to get the board of directors to approve of the alcohol, especially if a push came from President Harre, but not sure why President Heckler hasn't done it for these events under his administration, prior to this year? We'll see what happens with that overtime, won't we?

Yes, but other campus events, the policy was that the organization/group had to petition for alcohol to be allowed at the event. If it was voted down, there was no chance to appeal the decision, even if the purpose of the event was to fundraise for the university. I'm guessing that President Heckler is using the Homecoming beer tent as a specific study in "responsibility", to show if the community at-large of Valpo alums and current students could be responsible tailgaters or not.
