Title: Calbert Cheaney to visit the ARC
Post by: bbtds on August 26, 2013, 12:09:05 PM
Expect to see Calbert Cheaney at the ARC this December. He was hired as an assistant coach by Jim Crews at Saint Louis. Calbert was the DOB at Bloomington under Crean up till his hiring at SLU on Wed., August 21st.

Cheaney played on Bob Knight's 1992-93 Indiana team that was #1 most of the year and lost to Kansas in the Elite Eight. The previous year, 1991-92, Cheaney and the Hoosiers lost to Duke in Minneapolis in the Final Four.

Cheaney went on to a good NBA career finishing with the Golden State Warriors in 2006. Calbert started with the Washington Bullets (now Wizards) in 1993 and also played for the Celtics, Nuggets and Utah Jazz.

The new asst coach at SLU was also in the movie Blue Chips in 1994.

Cheaney is taking over the position Jim Whitesell vacated at SLU when he took an assistant coach position at St. John's under Steve Lavin. After Whitesell was named the Associate Head coach at SLU but was passed over for head coach by Jim Crews when Rick Majerus became ill it was evident Whitesell's future at SLU was limited.

Cheaney the answer to the trivia question...Who is the Big Ten's all-time leading scorer?

He was on some fun teams to watch at IU.  From what I recall he was well recruited, but even the IU coaches were surprised by how well he picked up the IU system, and scored within it.  As a true freshman he averaged more than 30 minutes and 17 points for Knight - quite an accomplishment.  I watched most IU games at that time, and it never really seemed like he was forcing his shot, even when he was averaging 21-22 points a game.  His points came within the flow of the game.  He would score 25, and you'd say "gosh, it didn't seem like he scored that much".

Towards the bottom of the link are his IU stats:

Well, for once Bryce won't be the best player in the gym. Calbert still looks to be in pretty good shape too. He was good when he was at IU...really, really good.
