Title: Valpo @ Drake
Post by: VULB#62 on October 21, 2013, 10:52:58 AM
Somebody's got to start it.   :snore:

Drake is 2-2 PFL and 3-4 overall.  Tied for 7th in the league with JU..  Mercer and Morehead are above them in the standings.  We are 9th.

From earlier this year:

Drake 31 U Indy 14
William Jewell 36 Valpo 34
U Indy 56 William Jewell 3

Not a good sign

More comparisons:

William Jewel is 1-6 - lone win VU.

Also lost to stellar FB programs South Dakota School Of Mines 48-70 and Truman State 7-45,

Sagarin says Drake by 40.  I'm skeptical.  Injuries have Drake thin at linebacker.

I talked to a Greyhound fan the other day and the U Indy loss to Drake, which is their only loss of the season and on the road, seemed to be U Indy falling apart and everything going wrong at the same time. U Indy took a 7-0 lead with 30 seconds to go in the 2nd quarter when a roughing the kicker penalty aided Drake in getting a FG as the half ended. U Indy missed 2 FG's in the first quarter also.

In the 2nd half, the Greyhounds had a blocked punt deep in their own end which resulted in a Drake touchdown and a two point conversion to put the Bulldogs up by 14. Later when U Indy intercepted Drake at the 2 yard line it ended up back firing as the Greyhounds fumbled in the end zone when the QB was sacked which resulted in 7 more points for the Bulldogs.

I'm not saying a lot of credit shouldn't be extended to Drake for a big win over U Indy but it wasn't one of the Greyhounds best days.

Here's my prediction for the Valpo/Drake game.

Valpo   21
Drake   51

My math says: Drake by 72.

I could have gotten the math wrong.  I was just operating on the ratio

31:14::56:3::36:34, reaching 1488 to 34.

That would be 212 TDs (and two safeties), or 53 TD per quarter, or 4.53 TD per minute, or a TD every 13.25 seconds.

So maybe the Transitive Rule of Football doesn't quite apply here.

I really have to wonder why we still bother with predictions.  ???  The only team they can beat is Campbell, and as I've said repeatedly (fill in misc. team), is not Campbell. I am still all for stealing the uniforms and replacing them with Campbell jerseys as somebody suggested.

I'll predict...Drake wins...by a large margin...offense puts up yards...sometimes points...Joel Osteen quotes to follow... :snore: :snore: :snore:

I think somebody is optimistically hoping that Carlson is released from his duties. I think it's unlikely and just wishful thinking. It's not out of the realm of possibility, but I would be surprised if it happened.

Your math is correct.  Instead of ratios, I used the difference: Jewell beat us by two, add 53 that UIndy beat them, add 17 that Drake beat UIndy to come up with 72 points that Drake could/should beat us by.

I was thinking of several ends...

The end of an era...

The end of the season...

The end of waiting for basketball season...    Football, at least at Valpo, is just a season before basketball commences.  Once basketball starts, there will be little football discussion until we get some news.

It's really sad to see over the past three seasons how a group of generally positive Valpo fans, myself included, have lost so much in the way of a positive attitude toward the progress (actually lack thereof) of our football program.  We're getting good kids, there have been cosmetic improvements (uniforms, some field decoration, office renovation - and whatever), and the OOC schedule has been generally upgraded.  We should be getting more and more excited about Valpo's prospects, but unfortunately, emotionally we are pretty much all sliding in the opposite direction.  This year there were 4 beatable teams on the schedule (and a 5th, Mercer - a first year program).  We found a variety of ways to lose all but 1.

Ahead lies:  Drake (A), USD (H), Butler PFL #1 (A) and Dayton PFL #2 (H).
Aggregated W-L record: 18-11

So, what if we beat St. Joe's and WJU and Campbell going into the rest of our schedule?  Maybe we would have had the confidence to win over Mercer and Morehead.  5 wins going into the last 4 games -- we cuddah been a contendah.  It all goes back to those first two D-II losses - IMO.  And we were not ready. There appeared to be no focused intensity.  There was no urgency.  The play was too casual. We did't have the credentials to play that way.  And I do not blame the kids. At this level, the leadership emmantes from the top.

My final word on the subject:  A FB program in distress has to first create a tough character, a desire to be competitive every play.  That is embodied by a defense that may not be super skilled but plays intensely.  How do you turn around a program that has lost and lost, with a finesse offense that depends on highly skilled players (but in limited quantity) and a defense treated as a necessary afterthought?

Lets look at Mercer's model. Start with a tough defense and a grind-it-out, running-dominant O.  Result: 6-1  Duh!   :banghead:

62, you are a dedicated fan with a lot of stake and interest in this team, and you have my respect.  I feel bad the university is letting you, the fans on this board, the players and their parents down.  The frustration for me is that the university does not care about this and not taking any actions to improve the situation.  This leadership performance is unacceptable.  What concerns me is the don't care, all is going fine attitude.  I want to see actions from the administration to attempt to resolve this sad, embarrassing situation.

Actually I think they do but that's okay. Interpreting intention on the interwebs can be difficult. Apparently everybody missed the part about stealing Campbell jerseys right after that...I am sure I was VERY serious about that. Yea, um, sure.

The gist of it is this...predicting anything other than a loss is just silly. We still do it and it's fun, but it's silly. Why? Because track record says so. Kind of like predicting the Cubs to win the world series every year. They haven't done it in over 100 years, so why would anybody who's reasonable think otherwise. Because we're fans, maybe we're delusional fans, but none the less fans.

People on here take stuff WAY to seriously... :whiteflag: (not pointing fingers at any specific individuals either)

I apologize if I misinterpreted what you were trying to say.

In the past I feel you have been pretty serious about the negative outcomes of Valpo teams. I didn't see you as someone who kids around about how bad Valpo football has become. It seemed you were suddenly attacking the prediction competition that we have for each Valpo football game (and during the basketball season men's basketball games). I really enjoy those "competitions" to see who can come closest because I like to be a competitor and would enjoy being the closest to the actual score some day. I enjoy the prediction competitions whether they're for a Valpo football team that might lose every game of the season or a men's basketball team that wins a lot. I don't "feel crazy" predicting a Valpo football loss each week because that is just being realistic. If Valpo football is too depressing to predict then we can switch to Valpo volleyball or men's soccer which are sports where Valpo wins more often. I feel the Valpo football games are the games the posters on this board are paying more attention to this time of year and that makes it more enjoyable to predict the outcomes of these games because we have more knowledge about these games.

Obviously I was wrong in thinking you didn't like the prediction competitions and again I apologize for that.

To me Valpo's negative results should have nothing to do with our enjoyment of competing to see who can come closest to the actual score.

It really says a lot about our problems when you consider the overall record against Drake or other PFL teams. Drake holds a 17-3 record against us and I think Morehead State is about the same, maybe 16-3.  The battle for the "Hoosier Helmut" is a joke as we've one once in what, seven tries?  17-3 with Drake winning the last 9 says that this isn't just a Dale Carlson problem as it is just unfair to him to indicate that he hasn't fixed the problem in four years.  Sure, things haven't gotten better, and possibly worse, but winning three times in 20 years against a school with very similar characteristics is just sad and indicative of a much greater, deeper problem.

72, I tend to disagree.  When someone comes in with the intention to fix the problem, they need to be held accountable. Carlson came in with an understanding of the problem and his performance has certainly been unsatisfactory.

We don't disagree.  Carlson should be held accountable.  My point is only that the problem is very deep seeded, like 20-30 years deep.  I think the turnaround guy theory doesn't work.  We need a guy who can win and inspire and recruit.  We don't have that now.

I'll agree with everybody else...this is a MUCH bigger problem than Carlson. While he is certainly to blame for much of what is going on, he's not the only person, or should I say persons. The commitment to football just hasn't been there and after years of neglect, we see the results.

Since 1973, when Amundsen completed a stretch of 5 winning seasons, we've only had six eight winning seasons.  That is correct - only six eight winning seasons in 40 years!  Horne did have a stretch of 3 non-losing seasons in '93-95, and three other winning seasons.  To Horne's credit, after his first three seasons he was nearly 0.500.  The problem is much bigger than just one coach.

http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_iaa/pioneer/valparaiso/yearly_totals.php (http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_iaa/pioneer/valparaiso/yearly_totals.php)

Edit: My math was incorrect.  It is actually eight winning seasons.  I was looking at consecutive winning seasons, and only counted those six in the last 40 seasons.

Thanks for reminding me of that site.

(that one) Lady and gentlemen, the worst teams in VU history.

1)  Criterion one:  WINLESS.  obviously you cannot be the worst if you won a game.
2)  Criterion two:  rate of points to opponent points, as a manner of how much you were outscored while offering correction for differences in eras (and number of games).

...spastic drumroll sound please...

4)  1989
Tom Horne's first year saw 0 and 10 (a slight decrease, but we'll get to that later), and being outscored 431 to 100 for a percent of 23.2%.  Bonus points for the first time VU ever had lost double-digit games.

3)  2010
Dale Carlos Teen's first year joelted off with 0 and 11, a still-unmatched record for most losses in a season.  Plus we got railed 514 to 100 (there's that number again) for a percent of 19.46%.

EXCURSUS: if motivational quotes worked, then explain his results?...& thus, if they don't work, then why bother? discuss.

2)  1941
Oh, sure, blame the war for the fact that we went winless for the first time in VU history, in coach Victor Dauer's first (and only) year.  Well, guess what, history major?  We hadn't entered the war yet duh.  We managed just 33 points and gave up 170 for a percent of 19.41%...which, is weird.  So...by my math, it took us 69 years to improve 0.05% [insert Bush-Obama economy joke here]!

BONUS POINT: For all y'all hankerin' fer a coaching change (sorry posting from 'Bama this week), please note that all three of these so far have been first year hires...

cymbalsplash.gif

1) 1988--0-9 & 1, 76 PF, 452 PA
What? you say?  Inconceivable!  Bill Koch's last year saw a tie!  Well, that's still winless, Wallace Shawn.

And getting outscored that bad leaves a percentage of just 16.81%, or losing EVERY GAME 45-7.

I feel that you should now reread this entire post in a Rod Serling or Vincent Price voice over.

--Although we think of our football program as a napalmed tire fire threatening to engulf the Cute Kitten Orphanage (what? ok maybe it's just me), there are some good things.

--It wasn't until our 7th season (1925) that we had a losing year.  (Again, under a first-year coach.)

--It wasn't until our 9th season (1927) that we fell under .500 as a program.

First ineptness period:  1925 to 1929 saw five years (under four different coaches) of just one win each year.

--And then in our 14th season (1932) we went undefeated for the first time and crawled back above .500.

--The JM Christiansen era also saw us fall back under again, in our 21st season (1939).

--Em Bauer nosed us back up again, but it took until 1952, our 34th season, and second undefeated one.  (see, good things happen when you go undefeated).

First golden period:  from 1949 to 1959, VU was over .500 for 11 straight years, and 13 of 16 from 1949 to 1964.

--And it wasn't until 1988, our 70th season (!), and second winless one, that we finally went under again!  (see, bad things happen when you go winless).

--That underscores and introduces our current period of ineptness, because as a program in 85 seasons of play, we are 368-465 (and 25 ties), or NINETY-SEVEN GAMES UNDER .500, all of which were earned after Ronald Reagan left office.  Coincidence?  You decide.

--39 seasons above .500, 6 seasons at .500, 40 seasons below .500.  Basically, we're .500 at being .500.

What? you say?  Inconceivable!  Bill Koch's last year saw a tie!  Well, that's still winless, Wallace Shawn.
If a tie is like kissing your sister, what is a 0-0 tie?  Yes, that tie from Koch's last year was 0 to 0.  That year also brought us the "Lonesome Polecat"

Cookie was an offensive minded genius, and I cannot be more sarcastic on that statement.  However, he was a gentleman and a very nice person.  Not a good coach though.  I would take Cookie over Carlson - at least Cookie tried to make changes with what he had.

With 5:10 left in Q1 Drake get's its first score -- now &-).  VU were able to halt Drake's first drive on a 4th & 1 stand on the VU 10. Then went 3 and out (a 2 yard run and two INCs). I suspect no one honors our run game so QB pressure and 5 deep pretty much will be what we'll be seeing all afternoon.

Valpo responding.  Driving with  some loger passes (29 and 18) to the 19.  Penalty and -2 rush. 2&17 on the DU 26.  38 yd FG from Newman!  A kicking game is emerging?

How on earth did Valpo manage to hold a team, ANY team to 7 points for three quarters? Thats a moral victory if you're into that sort of thing.

*Drake 14 Valpo 10

Am I reading game cast correctly, in the last five minutes we've had a 14 yard punt and two lost fumbles? Drake turns that into 16 points (we managed to block a PAT). What a way to piss away a game. Suddenly it's 23-10 with 2 minutes left. Ouch.

Yup, either Drake realized they were playing Valpo or Valpo finally recognized they weren't playing Campbell. Either way it's now 23 - 10.

Drake 23 Valpo 10 - They managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. In truth, Drake doubled up VU in total yards, so I think the better team actually won.

4, yes 4 yards rushing for the Crusaders ground attack. Four?!? How is that even possible?

Two huge turnovers at the end sends Drake to a 23-10 victory. Valpo just doesn't know how to finish close games.

Somehow we have played Drake tough the last two years.  Two fumbles and an interception by the QB and a 14 yard punt in the last six minutes of the game was the reason for the collapse.  The punt and fumbles gave Drake the ball three times at the twenty yard line and a short field which resulted in 16 points.  The kids battled but made mistakes when it mattered most.  The rushing attack needs to be addressed, four yards rushing is embarrassing.

Our Punter seems to do quite a few 10-20 yard punts.  It looks like he had 2 or 3 this game...

Yeah, erratic.  Ah.. inconsistent.  Bad punts at crucial situations are another symptom of a team's overall lack of confidence.  Team chemistry and emotion are really a type of karma and it infuses all of the players.  The great teams fight off the negative karma -- they don't acknowledge it.  Our team cannot do that.  All 100 kids are waiting for the other shoe to drop. And so they allow the self-fulfilling prophesy.

A good head coach and staff can WILL that away, but it has to be part of their make-up as well.  That also may not be present in zip codes 46383-46385.

Observations from watching the game at Drake Stadium today.

1.  Beautiful day in Iowa's state capital.  Not a big crowd.  Maybe 2000.  Drake fans were watching Iowa and ISU at the stadiums or their favorite watering holes.  About 100 Valpo fans were there - all were parents or relatives of the players.  No alums were at the game.  I was sadly surprised at the lack Valpo alums at the game - just parents.

2. Defense should be well commended. They played great overall and were on the field throughout the majority of the game.   Their tacking was fundamentaly excellent.  They kept Valpo competitive.  Drake was struggling to run the ball.  They had some great tackles for loss and some sacks.

3. Taibi's TD was awesome.  Nice pass, great running and effort after the catch.  The Valpo fans were excited and ready to experience a much needed win.  They were hopeful but cautious - who can blame them!

4.  Valpo's running game was pretty much non existent.  The RB could not hit the hole - it was like the anti Oregon.

5.  Hoffman was feeling pressure big time in the fourth quarter, he needed to gid rid of the ball earlier.  Too many bubble passes and screens.

6.  Budweiser Play of the game - Drake punt to the Valpo 1.  They were fortunate not to get a safety.  Then ... the 14 yard punt to the Valpo 19.  And then... depression set in.

7. The stay classy moment of the day - After Hoffman's second fumble, the defensive coordinator came over to chew out the offensive team at their bench.  There's a role model to follow.

8. The parents were quiet, bummed and frustrated at the end.  They were strongly critiquing the offense and the 3 and outs.  You know they love and support their kids after going through this.  This team needs to win and win bad.

just a couple points...The punter today is not a punter. He's been forced into duty because the two punters on the roster are ill. This was an obvious factor throughout. Secondly, the defensive coordinator could not have chewed anybody out on the sidelines as watches each game upstairs in the coaches box. Otherwise, some very fair points made by all.

The word I got is that one of the defensive coaches went over to the offensive players and said "Keep your head up guys, we'll get the ball back for you. Be ready when we get the ball back." There was no trashing or yelling from one side of the ball to the other. I confirmed this with several players.

If that is what happened, then my bad.  It looked different from where I was sitting and the coach was going off.  That being said, the defense did a great job yesterday.

Some quick notes from Drake: Great effort from the team in the game; in the 2nd half no adjustments were made on our side...they send the house , 8 in the box and we do nothing to extend the field (except for the TD pass, we ran no middle screens, no quick slants, no skinny posts, no stop / go routes etc). D played well but had chances to key stop drives when still 10-7 and gave up some big pass plays with the middle again wide open and 1 or 2 blown coverages. Need to get the freshman RB's more touches, their D see's Hall and knows its prob gonna be a run. We have a bruising power back in a spread...with 8 in the box he gets stuffed before he can get going upfield, yet we continued to do that??  Going against the wind we had some WR's way too far out on splits for a even 50/50 chance to make a completion. With our record, 4th and short...you go!!!!Was told the Drake TV/radio announcers spoke highly of the efforts of the  Valpo team and remarked often of the bright future with our team on the field.  Would agree with most posted comments, and I have said since game 2 that the karma is bit negative; need to have the kids in a mindset where they are instilled with confidence, with the accountability for their mistakes and some 'tude, a chip on the shoulder, and "refuse to lose" mentality.

Hall seemed to be a step or two behind, but I agree that there needs to be more of running game - the defense was on the field most of the game (37 to 23).

Announcers on the winning end, especially in a non cuttthroat conference like the Pioneer, will hestitate to say negative, critical comments about the opposition.   It's not like they are going to say that this team has won 3 games in 4 years and suck.

Defensively, this is the best they have played in Carlson's 4 years.  Regarding attitude and confidence, as this has prolonged over 4 years it is likely a coaching issue and certainly a lack of support from the Valpo adminstration.  I feel bad for the players and parents regarding this.

Only this football team could have not one but 2 punters ill for two staight games....I did see that one of them (Pando) was listed as playing.  I am assuming that is an error.

Also we listed a back up long snapper (Mandersheid) as starting at DE.  Is that in fact true?

yes so that if there's a fumble in the backfield he can get it to the free safety in a hurry

Where is Mandersheid listed as a starting defensive end? He hasn't played there, although he is now handling long some long snapping duties.

That info comes from the Drake stat crew. Nobody from Valpo would have anything to do with the published box score, but I do understand your frustration. John Guilford 90, would have started at DE, not 99.
