Hi... I'll start this thread with the CORRECT Game time at the ARC. Seems there are two schedules out... the correct time 1:05pm Central. So. I'm thinking Valpo by 15. These Lions are not Billikens. They have not been victorious against anyone with an RPI under 230. Back to Back Cross Country trips (played Friday 12/6 at Pitt, lost by 17. The beat Long Beach State (0-9) by ONE.
They have a 7-player rotation...when looking at their PITT boxscore:

Well this is a "big" game. It's MidMajorMadness's Game of the Week.
Valpo wins it by over 10.

I think we let LMU in for a little but in the first half. We come out in the second half and take control, but don't put them away until the end.

I'm the new guy here. Been reading the board for several years and finally decided to start posting. I jumped on the bandwagon after the '98 team and have attended at least 6 home games every year since then. So far I attended the Murray State, Mercer and Saint Louis games so far. This young team has molded well... much better than I had expected. I might get some backlash over this, but to me Fernandez is the worst player on the team. Sure he's tall and might get some rebounds, but he can't shoot at all. He misses everything from layups to free throws. Feel free to comment if i'm missing something.
My prediction:
Valpo 79
Loyola Marymount 66

Couldn't agree with you more on the Vashil comment. I was so optimistic after the MSU game where he exploded for 14 points or something but he gets in foul trouble quick which puts a lot of pressure on Moussa. He plays defense decently and is nowhere near as strong as Moussa who seems to be coming around lately. Vashil is a good player but he is the weakest link, at least in the regular rotation. He has improved greatly from last year and I'm not expecting him to be an offensive juggernaut. Hopefully he can learn something from Moussa who can absolutely shut someone down and be dominant down low.
As for the LMU game, I think it will be a blowout in favor of Valpo. LMU isn't that good this year and Valpo wants to get that bitter taste of losing on a buzzer beater to a very good SLU team out of their mouth

You are not too far off in regards to Vashil, but we need to focus on the fact that he has 3-4 years of basketball experience. Look at the strides he has made from last season to this season alone. He still does have trouble holding onto the ball, but not as much as last year, he gets more rebounds, and is developing some offensive moves. No, these moves have not paid off in points yet, but he is learning them. If he gets that hook shot to fall consistently next year, it will add a good component to our offense, as no one can reach that high.

Wonder how a bunch of California boys will fair in the beautiful NWI weather. Cold and snow will be a plenty!
I see that one of their guys - Gabe Levin - is from River Forest, IL. He graduated in 2012 (4th team all state), spent a year at a prep school, and is now a freshman. He has some good numbers - averaging nearly a double-double:

I would imagine our Chicago area players are familiar with him - maybe Alec, as well.

Add +5 to my score due to the weather. :)
In reality tho, I don't think it'll affect the game as I'm sure their already in the building a few hours before game time.
We all know how great the ARC's facilities are. The locker rooms could be quite frigid.

As small as the Saturday crowd was we might be able to shovel off an outdoor court, throw up some temporary bleachers and give everybody who wants to come a decent look at the game. I'll bet that all of our guys from the midwest have played a little basketball under similar conditions (not sure about Moussa or Vashil).
Hmmmm. Maybe we should challenge North Dakota State to an outdoor basketball exhibition game for next December up in the great white north. All we will need would be numbered insulated coveralls, earmuffs and mittens. It might be harder to find a crew of referees than a TV contract!
Where are you going to find a scorekeeper, clock operators and an announcer and a radio team willing to sit out in this?

They've got 3 stars that we need to watch. Outside of that we should win.

Remember that Coleman got hurt early on in the Mercer game. With a healthy Coleman we probably win that game.
We just ran into the LMU team at Wendy's a few minutes ago. It looks like they walked over from the Courtyard. A few were wearing hoodies and basketball shorts. Not exactly how I would have expected them to be dressed, considering it's 25 degrees and snowing heavily. Then again they are from LA. lol
The spread has us favored by 10 1/2.

Geez, that spread seems awfully large against what seems like a pretty good team.

If the kids are willing to play in a 30 below wind chill blizzard then I have to question the value of trained scorekeepers and timekeepers (hard to do with fogged up glasses and wearing mittens). As for the announcer and radio team they can probably find some real men up there who would be glad to do it either bare chested or in a tee shirt, just to say that they did and just for the love of the game!
I bring up this outrageous hypothetical only because there is almost as good a chance of it happening as there is of ND ever heading up to Fargo for a rematch and that is the shame of our college basketball pecking order. Hey is weathernerd still up there? He might show up in just sandals and swimming trunks.
I remember when the Valpo High press box burned down (circa 1990), and the next week we broadcasted from the stands with temps in the 20's and 25 mph winds. It was a whole lotta fun and I'm really hoping for a similar experience in the future.
Why are the zebras a west coast conference officiating crew?
These refs are horrible. I hope they all get pink slips for xmas. Totally ridiculous.
This is the weakest LMU team in awhile, but we're playing horribly. To a stronger team, we'd be down by 20 at least. Lucky we're even in this game. Interior defence continues to be poor this year, despite the talent. We are just too slow on the outside, can't adjust quickly, and can't stop penetration or baseline passes. Carter will help because of his quickness and good hands, but he can't do it alone.
Better 2nd half by the Crusaders.
Congrats to Alec for an outstanding offensive performance. Also glad to see Vashil playing quality minutes. I can't wait to see how the Carter era turns out. Should be very exciting.
Is Carter really this good? I am trying to temper my excitement until I see him play. If he is really our best shooter, even above Peters, I like our conference chances.
Great recovery in the second half, and very good minutes by Vashil. Solved our defensive rebounding issues by getting his hands in there.
2nd 30 point game for Alec, Need I say more? He basically said I don't wanna lose and brought the team back.
Overall the first half we looked awful. Defense was bad, offense was bad, it was just bad. 2nd half everybody played much, much better... Well except the refs. There were many phantom foul calls on us and not on them. Neither Moussa nor Bobby should've been in foul trouble.
Hard to imagine that Rowdy only scored 30 once, and it wasn't until his senior year against a very poor Bethune-Cookman team. I'm guessing Alec wins the FoW honors once again.
Few thoughts:
The refs were horrendous.
We were lucky they couldn't hit free throws.
It's Carter time.
Performances like that get you Player of the Week, not just Freshman in my opinion.
It would be a joke if he doesn't win POTW this week, and gets FOTW. Unless someone else in conference goes off on their opponent

Last time he deserved PotW honors Alec Brown had a triple double against a DII program. He definitely deserves the award. I know it might be a bit early but I would say that the Newcomer of the year is Alec's to lose. I thought he would be good but not this good.
So what is going on with Lexus? Obviously he didn't appear to be hurt....
Also, was Moussa hurt at the end? I saw Bryce giving him an earful and never got back on the court.

Moussa lost out because Vashil was playing well down the stretch. Once Moussa received his 4th foul and showed he wasn't able to keep his hands straight up, and then when Bobby fouled out, Vashil was the horse he was going to ride.

After watching Oakland lose by a few against Michigan State, my guess is Duke Mondy gets the nod. 24 points and several steals. That kid is the real deal.

SO... Couple of answers... YES, those were WCC officials (They attended Bloomsburg State, Cal-State Riverside and Oklahoma University). This was part of the Bracketbuster... and we have one more next year @ eastern kentucky. Here's a walk down memory lane on the 'buster. Game '1' means scheduled by whomever... and '2' means the return engagement.

Was it a bracketbuster rule that all 3 officials had to be from the WCC?
I got a good laugh when the ref pulled the ball out of play. My high school coach used to used to overinflate or underinflate the ball depending on the opponent.

IIRC, it was a general rule of thumb that the BracketBuster officials (both original games and the return trips) were officials from the visiting team's conference. Often, there'd be some crossover because you were playing a team within geographic proximity, but obviously that wouldn't be the case here.
Look back to the box score at LMU two years ago: you'll recognize all 3 names if you ever check out our officials - http://www.valpoathletics.com/media/basketball-men/2011-12/boxscores_stats//mb29-lmu.htm (http://www.valpoathletics.com/media/basketball-men/2011-12/boxscores_stats//mb29-lmu.htm)
Valpo played fairly well defensively after stinking up the joint on that end the first 10 minutes when they gave up I think it was 29 points. I loved Vashil's sweeping hook shot he hit in the second half, oh and his one handed slam was pretty spectacular too.
I have been concerned about the lack of size next year, with the loss of Moussa and Bobby but feel better envisioning Vashil a year from now plus then addition of E. Victor, who I thing will be a much bigger and better version of Jordan. We'll be fine...
This was an odd game to figure out. The first half I kept commenting that it seemed as if Valpo was playing its first exhibition of the season. The players were so out of sync that it appeared they hadn't played together before, and the combinations Bryce put on the court seemed like experimentation, plus everyone got playing time. However, the second half looked like Valpo was playing seriously, and Bryce didn't make many changes.
Consequently, all the highlights were in the second half, including those seen in my photos below. The first shows Bobby's circus shot that somehow went in while he was kneeling on the court. It reminded me of a similar shot made by Van Wijk last year. (Speaking of Bobby: he was hustling all the time and resembled Lexus a bit by the amount of time he was throwing himself with abandon across the court.) The second photo displays Vashil finishing his impressive slam dunk. In the third photo Alec is hitting one of his four 3-pointers. (Alec was a warrior throughout the game, playing until exhaustion a couple of times. In fact, if you saw Alec taking his free throws after he got hammered by a hard foul in the first half, he seemed dazed and his eyes were glazed, yet he played through it.) Finally, a picture of the students celebrating with the team after the victory.

I kept waiting for #3 to lose the ball in his shorts when he dribbled between his legs, I'm still not sure if they were that baggy or if he was in a skort.
A few thoughts from the game:
Once again the team came out slow and sluggish, very similar to the SLU game. They only shot 25% in the 1st half and at one point I think LMU was 11/13 or something from the field to start the half. The team seemed to gel in the 2nd half and I'm guessing from what it looks like, the back of the bench for the conference will be Chadwick and Davidson, with Clay getting some PT here and there but he'll be in the Jordan Coleman role I believe.
Alec -- Need I say more? 30 points & 8 boards. I understand Mondy played really well today for Oakland but he had a mediocre performance against IU earlier in the week and Oakland lost both games, Alec deserves PotW honors, without him we lose.
LVD -- Not his best game, shots weren't falling. Had a good 2nd half, had 10 points and he never seemed out of control either when going to the rim. Just not his night but overall not an awful performance.
Jordan -- Hoping he finds his 3 point shot again. He looked more like Jordan Coleman today, had some athletic plays and was good for a quiet 12 points and was stellar from the charity stripe again.
Moussa -- Played well, thought some of the foul calls on him were phantom calls. He really seems to be playing much better as of late and will be a defensive force down low and seems to be able to have a few moves offensively as well.
Vashil -- Played really good. Only 2 fouls and really played big minutes down the stretch. Got that hook shoot to finally drop and if he can do that regularly watch out.
Bobby -- Not his best nor his worst. Brought a lot of energy and plays with reckless abandon as well. Fell victim to poor reffing, overall though he is looking better and better at the 4.
Jubril -- Was quiet, made important FTs at the end (after missing a couple). Not his best performance but somehow the team plays really well when he's on the court, compared to sitting on the bench.
Lexus -- Injured??? Guess that's why he saw limited action today.
Clay -- Nice to see start but not a very good game and didn't play a whole lot either. Had 2 early points and a couple of assists but I see his court time decreasing as the season goes on.
Chadwick/Davidson -- 2 minutes of PT today!
Keith -- The Keith Carter era at Valpo will officially commence next tipoff against Southeastern on Saturday in bright and sunny Orlando, Florida.
I have uploaded 36 of my photos (many featuring the guy below) from yesterday's game at the following link: Enjoy! http://www.flickr.com/photos/96208998@N05/sets/72157638714433313/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/96208998@N05/sets/72157638714433313/)

The post game press conference for the Loyola Marymount game was mislabeled on YouTube as a second press conference for the Mercer game. Here is the actual link to the Loyola Marymount press conference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLC9X41gfKE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLC9X41gfKE) A very interesting press conference.
Saturday's announced attendance was an anemic 2548. That's probably about right because the ARC definitely had a "half full" look and feel. Yes, the weather was bad, but there has to be something else going on. This was one of the best OOC home schedules in years and the team is playing exciting basketball, but the community is simply not responding the way they have in the past.
Aside from the obvious "where is everybody at," someone in the Athletic Department needs to look at the on-line ticket ordering system because there is definitely something wrong. The ticket availability seating chart for both the St. Louis and LMU games showed the lower level all but full, and yet there were huge gaps all over the place, way too many to possibly be no-shows. The problem is when someone looking to buy tickets on-line sees that, they assume there are no good lower level seats available or that the place is going to be very crowded, when nothing could be further from the truth. I'm guessing that it is more than coincidence that this seemingly new problem coincides with Cindy Eaton retiring.
This problem -- low attendance -- is occurring at a LOT of programs. Drake, for instance, played New Mexico State here in DSM on Saturday night. Drake is off to a 6-2 start, with a new coach, against a good team. The attendance was a little over 3,000 in a facility that seats 7,000. This in a capitol city many times the size of Valparaiso.

The online ticketing is an embarrassment.
* The amount of steps you have to do to end up at the seat-chooser is completely unacceptable. It's almost completely hidden.
* The lack of a ticket link on the schedule is incredibly stupid.
* There's no calendar view with a schedule, unlike every sports teams website ever.
* Combining the men's and women's schedules makes everything confusing.
* The top sport, men's basketball doesn't have a direct link to the tickets page from the athletics website.
* Big home games do not have a ticket link from the main athletics site.
* Packages are seemingly non existent.
* Giveaways aren't really advertised
* Ticket prices are even a bit confusing
Marketing seems to be pretty clueless outside of the athletics website as well. Their idea of marketing a game is to buy billboard space. Marketing games via social media is incredibly lazy. The only time they advertise tickets is on game day when they post a graphic with the URL for the ticketing website. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THE LINK IN THEIR POST. They also fail when it comes to advertising games in advance. They had a week to advertise the LMU game and had 0 posts about it midweek. They had a tweet the night before, but didn't include the time or any other details other than a T-shirt giveaway. Completely unacceptable.
Also, the lack of an athletics email newsletter is baffling. I can't check out of a dollar store without the cashier asking for my email. I've bought tickets from the athletics site before and do not get promotional emails from the athletics department. If one such email list server exists, they do a horrible job of advertising it and getting people on it.
Also, before every game, they need to Tweet/Facebook a direct link to the Horizon League network. I would imagine a lot of people don't even realize how easy it is to watch a game and that they're all completely free.

It would, because avid fans go to more games. It's why blacking out games are incredibly stupid (see before the Blackhawks bandwagon). There's a lot of fans in Chicago, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, etc that aren't able to go to every game, but if they followed the team more closely, they might come back for a few home games. I don't think an increased viewership on the HL Net would come at a cost of attendance at an actual home game, because if you're dedicated enough to watch the grainy Horizon League Network, you're probably dedicated enough to attend some games live.
Oh, I think there's some truth to that. I just have to bust your chops every now and again so people think we're different people, not just different accounts.

* Combining the men's and women's schedules makes everything confusing.
* The top sport, men's basketball doesn't have a direct link to the tickets page from the athletics website.
* Big home games do not have a ticket link from the main athletics site.
* Packages are seemingly non existent.
* Giveaways aren't really advertised
This is constructive criticism at its best. I hope these thoughts and suggestions find their way into ml's office so someone will act on them.

Most viewers of college basketball on the internet would disagree with you that HLN broadcasts are grainy. Actually the quality of the video is very good compared to other conferences such as the OVC, MAC, MVC, A10, etc.

Very true. Watching our games on other networks just shows us how lucky we are to have a quality online product for the league!
