Well, let's walk the walk for a change.  I agree, but it is the execution of it that counts.

Yes, we can beat these guys.  We let one get away (Morehead State), and really gave a good portion of the game to Dayton (turnovers, etc.) - so yes, we could win this one.

Valpo    -  30
Butler   -   27

I sure hope you are correct.  I think any of us would say it was a successful season with a Butler win.  Unfortunately we are facing a bunch of critical player questions.  Will Karamata be able to go?  Will Hall be able to go?  Will Cassara be able to go?  How much rope will Coach give to Ben?  If we are ner full strength I also like our chances.

Are Camerota, Cassera and Hall replaceable?  Yes.  Can we beat Butler?  Yes.

My bad on that.  I mixed up the name with the CNN and Fox News reporter.

Karamata may be a preseason AA and he is good, but they were 100's of preseason AA's on that list.  He is good but he is not irreplaceable.  No player is irreplaceable when you have been 5-37 the past four years.

Time to see what the young guns can do and move forward.
Title: Re: Game #10 - Vs. Butler Bulldogs

KUramata and the other receivers have a significant dependency on our QBs getting the ball within their catch range.  No one can be a AA receiver without that.  And while I really like the more diverse attack, the increased emphasis on the running game, and the increased mobility demanded of our QBs in the new scheme, we need to be able to deliver the ball better to make the passing attack more effective.  Part of it is progressions.  I recall one particular (3rd and 2) play against Dayton, in which the RB circled out of the backfield to the weak side and was open by 15 yards, but the play went strong side, with no look to the back, and was incomplete as Dayton rolled up strong side.  With full field vision, that would have been an easy 1st down +.

FYI

Butler 62 - MSU 52
Stetson 28 - Campbell 24
USD 17 - Drake 14

UPSET OF THE SEASON (SO FAR, IMO)

Marist 17 - Jacksonville 16

By next year I want our program to be in the discussion that surrounds close scores and/or upsets like the Stetson and Marist results this week..

Roger that.  This is a winnable game if we protect the ball, don't drop easy interceptions and hang onto our passes thrown on target.  It would be great to watch it. Too bad.

Butler, up to the Morehead game explosion, only had scored 105 points in PFL play.  Yeah, I know, so far we have only scored 106 so far, but they have also given up 204 to our 176.

Some interesting facts in this write up from the Butler Athletics website:

Butler will wrap up its 2014 road slate on Saturday, Nov. 8, when it visits long-time foe Valparaiso.  The Pioneer Football League contest at Brown Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT, 2 p.m. in Indianapolis).  The Bulldogs (4-5, 2-4 PFL) are looking to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season.  The Indianapolis squad turned in its biggest offensive performance of the season last weekend with a 62-52 victory over Morehead State at the Butler Bowl.  That game featured more than 1,100 combined yards, and the 114 combined points were a Butler single game record!  Valparaiso (2-7, 0-5 PFL) dropped its last outing at Dayton, 42-19, last weekend.  The Crusaders trailed just 14-12 in the third quarter of that game, before Dayton took control with 28 unanswered points.  Butler and Valparaiso will be continuing a series that dates back to 1927 and has been contested through four different conferences.  The two teams have met on the football field 72 previous times, including every year since 1951.  Following the trip to Valparaiso, Butler will close out the regular season at home  against Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Butler has won three straight games at Brown Field.

What a turnaround it would be for Valpo if they could win this game! Last year they lost 72-12 at Butler.  Valpo is better and at home,  Butler is not as good as last year.  It could be a W but I would not bet my ranch on it.

Then I have to reprise my role ;)

John Winger: Cut it out! Cut it out! Cut it out! The hell's the matter with you? Stupid! We're all very different people. We're not Bulldogs. We're not Camels. We're Crusaders, with a capital 'C', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the Middle East. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold! But there's no animal that's more faithful, that's more loyal, more loveable than the mutt. Who saw "The Shot?" Who cried when Bryce hugged his dad at the end?
[raises his hand]

John Winger: *sarcastically* Nobody cried when Bryce hit The Shot? I'm sure.
[hands are reluctantly raised]

John Winger: I cried my eyes out. So we're all dogfaces, we're all very, very different, but there is one thing that we all have in common: we were all stupid enough to sign with VU football. We're mutants. There's something wrong with us, something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us - we're football players. But we're VU football players! We've been taking asskickings since Em Bauer retired! We're 1 and 10! Now we don't have to worry about whether or not we practiced. We don't have to worry about whether Mark LaBarbera wants to have us hung. All we have to do is to be the great American fighting Crusader that is inside each one of us. Now do what I do, and say what I say. And make me proud.

*wow that was 2 years ago i thought just one these seasons are starting to all blend together

It appeears that my prayers over the last few years have finally begun to be answered: Play some defense and keep the scores close --  and win it with basic football.  Can there be any doubt that the negative slide this program has been experiencing has finally been stopped?  Now we need to start climbing back up into respectability.

It appears from Todd's commentary that Guilford is having a career game.  Congrats (JUNIOR) John Guilford

The team played a terrific game. It was great to watch the enthusiasm, confidence, and determination from the opening kickoff through the final minutes, as well as to feel the energy on the sideline. I took many pictures, and I'll post them when I can, but the image below is the one I think everyone was waiting to see. An injured Tanner Kuramata delivers the Hoosier Helmet to Coach Cecchini at the team gathering following the game.

This is a great day.  To call it a program-defining win might be TMTS, as the late great Coach Skip Bird would write in my margins, but it is simply glorious.

To assist us in appreciating this achievement, I made a helpful graph.

In all honesty, when was the last time you saw a team convert FIVE fourth downs?

I'm thinking it had to do with volleyball having a home game that could have decided the conference title vs. a football game that we weren't sure what significance it would have. I don't understand why Valpo doesn't have multiple cameras to be able to carry both an event at Brown Field and the ARC, if they are playing concurrently? I mean how costly is a second camera?

Here are three more of my photos from the post-game festivities. First, the team retrieves the Hoosier Helmet from the Butler side of the field and marches with it to the Valpo side. Second, in front of the home stands full of fans, the players share their celebration at capturing the Hoosier Helmet. Finally, the coach carries the game ball to his office, where he will have it signed by all the players on the team.

Valpo is now up a notch in the Sagarin ratings (#250), and I would have thought they would have gone up more than that.  Progress baby! What a difference from last year!

Also, strange as it looks, USC is #20 in the Sagarin and the Frightened Irish dropped to #21 after their blowout loss to ASU. No love for ND in the Sagarin.

I applaud Cecchini on his work and the progression of this team.  He has a tough job after Osteen's (Carlson's) mess and these guys are showing some confidence. These guys are playing more competitively, and with more talent, they will compete in this conference.

I would strongly encourage all posters to watch the post game press conference -- all 17+ minutes of it (longest in VU FB history I think).  Listening to Coach C talk about their preparation and planning, the overall goals of the program, the realization that VU is still not the biggest fastest or strongest of teams and adjusting to that with smarts and discipline, tells us that we have a smart staff with strong beliefs in what they are doing.  Then listening to Ben, Tony and Alex give some player perspective also gives some great insight into how this program has changed over the course of just 10 games.

What a great game!  Valpo dominate on both sides of the ball and the play calling (like the QB punts on 4th down) was fantastic!  When I watched the Brown and Gold game last spring many high school football teams looked more impressive than Valpo.  Now they are a totally different team as the improvement has been amazing in such a short time.  If this coaching staff can recruit as well as they can motivate and coach than Valpo football future looks very bright!

BIGGEST win ever or BEST win ever?  Discuss.

Seriously, how far back do we have to go to find as meaningful a win?

This is important because:
--the rivalry, and how one-sided it'd become (2007)
--speaking of which, going from 12-72 to 17-3 is simply amazing
--Cecchini's first year, wanting a signature win (in-conference besides).  The numerical turnaround as noted above is nothing short of
(http://img2.imagesbn.com/p/9780833524669_p0_v1_s260x420.JPG)
--having come so close in recent weeks only to get gut-punched at the end (Drake, Campbell, esp MOREHEAD)
--did i mention we hate butler?  like i know hate is a strong word, but sometimes NOT STRONG ENOUGH?

What other ones rank this high?

Some candidates:
--Beating Campbell 34-31 in 2011 to break the 29-game losing streak.
--Um, beating Campbell all the other times, and...uh...

well, you have to go back to OCTOBER 11 2008 to find the last time we beat any D1 team not named Campbell (Davidson).

So, yeah, this is the biggest win in the past seven seasons.

BONUS:  the win makes this already the best season in the past seven seasons.

When you look at the two deep chart, there are very few seniors.  Receiver will be one slot that will need some replacements.  So, perhaps the talent level isn't that great but with another year of learning the system surely they will continue to improve.

I have to think that some success will only help in the process of recruiting.  Imagine you are a Valpo recruit and you are trying to decide between Valpo and Butler.  Last year you witnessed a 72-12 beat down and are trying to see how your contribution will help a team who has won three games in three years.  This year's recruit watched a Valpo team dominate the game and see a new coach who has actually done something relative to a turnaround. Now it's about "come help us FINISH the turnaround" rather then "come help us START the turnaround"  Much improved scenario...

QuoteThe Horace B Smedley School football team, the Smedley Tornadoes, "hadn't won a game all year. They hadn't scored even a single point" (Allard, 6-7). Even worse than their lousy skills is the team's resigned and defeatist attitude, goofing off during practice with the attitude of "why bother trying when we just will lose anyway?". This causes Coach Armstrong to crack up, and Miss Nelson sends him on vacation to regain his bearings. ... But then Coach Swamp appears on the field and quickly puts the team in her control. Coach Swamp applies her trademark discipline to the team, demanding tough exercises and no back talk from the players. The team pulls together and sharpens their skills. When Coach Armstrong returns, the team was finally acting like a real football team. Finally, at the football game, the Tornadoes beat the Werewolves "seventy-seven to three", and a pleased Blandsworth treats the whole team to hot dogs at Lulu's.

In reality 72, I would hope these recruits decide on a school that best meet their overall needs, with academics hopefully being a priority. If Butler needs your needs for your future, then go to Butler. If Valpo needs your needs for your future, then go to Valpo.  Both schools have their unique positives and negatives, and academically overall they are about the same. Also, we are talking about non-scholarship football here. I would hope these student athletes do not decide on a school solely on a football program.

I completely agree.  If you want to study pharmacy, go to Butler.  If you want to study engineering then perhaps Valpo is a better choice.  My statement should have been prefaced with: "All things being equal..."

Congrats to the team and coaching staff!  I finally believe that the program is moving in the right direction.  This coaching staff has done wonders, especially on defense, where we've averaged giving up more than 40 points per game the last several years.  This year it is under 30.

I'm thinking next year WHEN we beat Butler we can hang a bulldog from the victory bell in effigy.

Or maybe install a doggy gate to Brown Field.

I'm thinking about doing it from my mailbox. I'll just have to embed it in concrete first. Of course the neighbors will think I'm a cat lover.

So, funny story tonight.  I'm at the parish tonight (HS youth min) and a lady walks in looking for our Adoration chapel.

I described it as best I could.  She says "Is it safe here?"

I gesture with a sweep of the arm meant to communicate the thought "look around lady this is NAPLES fergodsakes".

She says, "oh right sorry I'm from chicago."

Where?  I ask.  "Arlington Heights...but Lincoln Park before".

Oh, I say, I'm from Valpo.

"We were just there last weekend for the football game!" she says.

OH MY GOSH WASN'T THAT AMAZING?  WHAT A TOTAL BEATDOWN!!!!

"...well...actually," she says, "my son plays for Butler."

Whoops.

Sherlock: Mrs. Linda Epstein, I presume.

It's a small world. At least she knew what the weather was going to be like.
