Which CoF team is Valpo facing? Is there a roster? A location? A school?

Not a real school, not a real program. Incredibly poor job scheduling by Valpo.

They played Davidson last year and lost 56-0. There are numerous articles on the web regarding the school and it's athletic programs mirroring the reddit article.
Valpo should avoid scheduling Sacred Heart in game 2 and first year programs with schools which may or may not exist in game three and attempt to find programs which would be competitive efforts for all involved. Look Div II, III or NAIA. There should be plenty of suitors.
No, stick with Div I-AA opponents. Last year Valpo played Missouri Baptist, a first year NAIA school, and the game was a joke. I think you should play within your division.
That being said, what was the rationale to schedule this game?

Valparaiso (1-2)
Is it possible to schedule a ham and egger that is an actual school?
There are two Cof F branches. One in Arkansas Missouri and one in Charlotte, NC. It was the Charlotte team (Spirits) that lost to Davidson. We play the Arkansas team (Warriors) on Saturday.
Here is the Warrior website: http://www.gofaithwarriors.com (http://www.gofaithwarriors.com) It's not much. This is their inaugural season and they lost in week 1 to McKendree University 68-0. McKendree is a D-II program in Illinois that is a member of the GLVC -- the same one St. Joe's belongs to. That is, they give FB scholarships like St. Joe.
Here is the link to the McKendree game recap: http://mckbearcats.com/news/2015/9/5/FB_0905150906.aspx?path=football (http://mckbearcats.com/news/2015/9/5/FB_0905150906.aspx?path=football)
They took a 51-0 lead into halftime. In the first quarter they ran back two punts for TDs.
This is basically an "exhibition" for Valpo similar to MBB scheduling preseason games against Grand Valley (14) or Hillsdale and Robert Morris (13), and, with 3 QBs knocked out of service so far (Conner Smith - out for the season with torn labrum (shoulder); Stokes and Stall - concussions , but may be back) we go into the game needing to see how Ryan Clark plays without the overwhelming risk another D-I would present. Is it the best of scheduling. No. Does it come at the right time? Yes. Is it better than a bye week? IMO, very much yes, because no amount of controlled scrimmages during a bye period can supply the game day situations, decisions and environment. It is also an OOC game that will allow the staff to further evaluate all of their new players against live opponents.
The only disappointment I would have would be if we did not hang 48 on the scoreboard by halftime. That would be an indication that we haven't responded to the adversity thrown at the team by the SHU loss. So, in reality, a lot is riding on this next game. Let's see how the staff and kids respond.
And in response to the posts saying we should stick to D-I opponents for OOC games, I disagree. This is the first time in my memory that we have scheduled 2 FCS programs as part of our OOC schedule ever. I could see the EKU game as a guarantee game (all PFL teams do that). But SHU (they went to the playoffs last year) right after EKU was tough on us physically and emotionally. However, sometimes you have to take what you can get. And in 2015 we wound up with two polar opposites in two weeks - SHU and COF. It is what it is. We make the best of it.

It's not that we should stick with D1 teams - it's that we should stick with playing actual college institutions.

Are the players going to arrive through the Library's computers since they are virtual?
No, don't be silly. Our library network is secure and unaccessible from outside. They don't have a big travel budget -- only for the coach. They'll arrive via the COF's head coach's laptop once he gets to Valpo. ;)

Their website shows three coaches, one of whom is the AD and one of whom is the basketball coach. Tight budget!!! This should be pretty silly.

The score at the end of the first quarter was BC 41 - Howard 0. At the half it was BC 62-0. They cut the 3rd and 4th quarters to 10 minutes each.
FROM ESPN.COM: BOSTON -- Boston College coach Steve Addazio reached the point where he wanted it to end.
He can hardly be blamed with the work he has to get ready for No. 11 Florida State on Friday.
"You get in the mode where: We didn't know what to do, what to call," Addazio said. "It just got to the point where you didn't want to throw it; you don't know what to call, you just want it to end.
Let's hope we have to shorten quarters on Saturday as well.
Is this a guaranteed fantasy football victory?
We dropped one notch in the Sagarin. Some significant movement in the upper PFL tier though.

While not a ham and egger, I think we should still be playing St. Joe, rather than the College of Faiths and MO Baptists. Long tradition, even a road game is a morning bus trip. Keeps kids in school. If we are going to keep playing a non FCS game, keep it in state with St. Joe.

We had St. Joe in that 2015 slot until the GLVC added a team and St. Joe had to back out. They (MLB and DC) spent months trying to fill it, and short of another expensive flight or a third FCS scholarship team which Cecchini was not willing to do, we were left with COF or a 10 game schedule.
Thanks for the insight on the loss of the St. Joe game, 62. Still too bad we couldn't find a more attractive opponent, but this makes it more understandable.

Yes, thanks for the insight.
I think that I'd rather see St. Xavier (IL), Taylor, St. Francis (IL), St. Francis (IN), Siena Heights (MI), and Robert Morris before College of Faith. Maybe U of Indy or Marian when in a few years.
See a further explanation from my post on the SHU string.

Coach Cecchini went through the same explanation as to the late scheduling of the game which certainly puts it in a different light.
I had read about COF a couple of years ago in a local article regarding whether they are a "real" school and football program so the one thing which still is confusing to me is the fact that they are billed as a first year program.
Whoever it is that's playing, I hope Valpo shows well. They should.
If necessary to face a sub Div I school, maybe they should face a small college Chicago team like North Park, Lake Forest or North Central.
IMHO, if this school is not a real college, then this game should not count toward their overall record.
The game is on the schedule. What's done is done. Instead of whining about it, why don't we simply show some respect for this opponent. After all, we have given up 118 points in just two games. It's not like we are the Steel Curtain or anything.
The young men from the College of Faith have committed to the rigorous schedule of doing their studies and playing intercollegiate football. Let's show them some respect on the field and on this board.
Paul
You better not say anything about the College of Faith to their football coach, because he's also the president of the college and the athletic director.

If you are going to have your top two quarterback out, this would be the perfect time. The hope is that nothing happens to Ryan Clarke so Jake Paliga can continue to be redshirted. I found a comment by Coach C during this weeks preview somewhat troubling. He said, in effect, that Ryan was relegated to the scout team last week because of some off the field issues where he wasn't acting like a quarterback (read, leader). Hopefully the kid will get it together. He is probably bigger then most of the kids on COF so doubt he will get hurt.

He actually was to see considerable time vs. SHU, but he did a stupid kid thing (nothing serious) over the previous weekend involving his age ;-) and the staff had no choice but to demote him. He would not have even gotten into Saturday's game except for the concussed QBs. He did not do too well as the ball was deep in our territory and I believe he fumbled a snap. Never threw a pass. Valuable lesson learned for him - and the rest of the young players. He's a good kid and the coaches really like his skills. Sizewise he is 6-5, 220 and was last year's long snapper due to that size. Jonathan Coyne is this year's LS (6-1, 235) and has a rocket snap.

Not suspended. Demoted to scout team - i.e., no reps in the VU offense for the week - ran SHU plays only. Big difference - suspension he would not have even dressed. He'll be OK, not worry. Hey, he's a Jersey kid 8-)

If this was Vegas it would be off the board. Too many unknown variables. We don't know if they will even play 15 minutes quarters. We don't know which of our key players will play. I'm not even going to venture a guess other than it'll be a W.
Hopefully we'll turn the corner with turnovers. Our QB situation is unknown - at least it is still an OOC game. Hopefully we can rest the concussed QBs and still red-shirt the freshman.

Maybe I need to update my prediction. No kicker. This CoF team lost to McKendree 68-0. The NC CoF team lost all games last year, not scoring in any of them. I think you are correct. Our defense shines. Hopefully, we'll only run the ball in the second half.

re: Drake game: UND was up 21-0 at halftime and it appeared to be a laugher going into the break, but the Drake defense buckled down and held UND scoreless in the second half, and even notched a safety. They were especially effective at stopping the run.
Were it not for a failed 2-pt. conversion, Drake could have taken it to OT. What's especially impressive is 1) The game was at UND and 2) UND had just beaten FBS :o Wyoming the previous week in Laramie. We'll see how the Bulldogs fare in the coming weeks, but I got a feeling beating them may be a little harder than anticipated.
In the mean time, I'm geniunely intrigued as to this CoF game goes. What will await the Crusaders on the far sideline? How will it compare to the Missouri Baptist game last year? Should we even have to throw the ball after the 1st Quarter?
Speaking of MBU, they are 0-2 so far this season. Lost to Bethel University 48-7 and then lost a tough one to Siena Heights 42-35. At least they are a legit program. Best of luck to them.
BTW, they are in the same NAIA league (Mid-States Football Association) as St. Francis of Indiana and Lindenwood-Belleville (where Dale Carlson is the HFBC and their field is gray and maroon stripes every 5 yards. L-BU is 1-1 losing their opener and wining by 1 point last Saturday).

With an emphasis by the coaching staff to preserve a redshirt and keep Clarke in the game, it would make sense that Valpo have the QB turn around and hand it off the entire game. Brandon Hall should be held out again and maybe Legend and whoever is next in line beyond he gets the bulk of the work.

Don't forget that this game is also an important prep game for USD the following week. We have enough tape on USD (frequencies and tendencies) to work all aspects of the game to get ready for a real opponent. If we run all game in spite of the fact that we know that, for instance, our USD game plan will require our line to pass block 60% of the time, we're not doing ourselves any favors. The staff will take injuries into consideration, I'm sure (another for instance - Ryan might be limited to hand-offs and passes but no keepers), but they also must balance that with the need for overall team preparation and a view to the following week. We have a lot of improving to do and constraining the attack will slow our progress. Just my opinion.
Brandon Vickrey reports that Staal is out, Stokes and Brandon Hall questionable and Clarke will start.

FROM THE GAME NOTES JUST POSTED
Scouting College of Faith: Located in West Memphis, Arkansas, College of Faith will play its second game in program history Saturday at Brown Field. McKendree University dealt the Warriors a 68-0 defeat in its debut on Sept. 5th. McKendree is a D-II institution that competes in the Great Lakes Valley Confer- ence (GLVC), the same league as Saint Joseph's.
The Bearcats racked up 352 yards of total offense while limiting the Warriors to -4. McKendree returned the first two College of Faith punts back for touch- downs in a 28-point first quarter. Four different Bearcats recorded carries as part of a 268-yard rushing day. The home team also denied the Warriors a first down. Many Warriors pulled double duty on the gridiron on Sept. 5th, a by-product of having 21 players participate.
FROM THE 2-DEEP
QB 16 Ryan Clarke 6-5 220
19 Jake Paliga 6-1 175
RB 49 Jake Hutson 5-7 180
25 Grayson Bastin 5-9 185
NOTE: JJ Nunez is listed as both an OLB starter and a Safety BU
Is this game for real? Or is this from the Onion?
That was real.
FROM THE ONION
Unsubstantiated rumor has it that there will be some slight alterations to the game format.
1) Prior to kick-off, the 21 COF players and the 100 Valpo players will be placed in a single drafting pool. The Valpo captains will play rock/paper/scissor for the first choice. All players will be drafted into two teams of ~60.
2) The captains will then play one round of EA NFL 2K15 for the right to pick their jersey color. White will be COF, Brown will be Valpo.
3) Instead of a coin toss, two football robots, one representing each squad will duke it out at the 50 yard line for the right to receive or defer to the second half.
4) The actual game will be played in decreasing time quarters.
Q1 = 15 minutes
Q2 = 12 Minutes
Q3 = 10 Minutes
Q4 = 8 minutes
In the event of a tie in altered regulation, NCAA rules for OT will be in effect
I suppose as the game goes on we could switch from 11 to 7 or, if too many of their lineman are injured we could agree to count to 3 before rushing.
All kidding aside, 21 players were on the short end of a 68-0 thrashing in week #1. How many of those 21 hung it up right there? How many might have sustained injuries (Do they even have a medical/training staff)? I am worried for those kids' safety (and our responsibility). I wonder about their discipline and the urge to act out in frustration with illegal hits. I also wonder about what impact this will have on our players. Will they back-off or not play at 100% because they know they are so much stronger and faster and in better shape (knowing the old adage when you don't go full out that's when injuries occur)? I wonder how we can build intensity in the face of this? I wonder what if one of our kids gets hurt in a meaningless game....? At the time it seemed like a plausible option, but knowing what we know now, maybe (again with 20/20 hindsight) we should have just gone with a bye week here and a 10 game schedule.
But then my evil twin, Skippy, is whispering in my ear "hey they had enough money to buy uniforms and pads just like us, and if they show up they know what they signed up for. Tough petunias, the result is on them. Our job is to kick butt regardless."
Brandon Vickrey's preview in the Post-Trib
College of Faith at Valparaiso
When: 1 p.m. Saturday, WVUR-FM (95.1 FM), ESPN3.com.
Outlook: Valparaiso is 0-2 after last week's 56-3 loss to Sacred Heart. Quarterbacks Dalton Stokes and Scott Staal both left the game with concussions. Staal has been ruled out for Saturday's game, while Stokes is questionable. Sophomore Ryan Clarke will make his first career start at quarterback. Clarke finished last week's game under center but did not throw a pass. He completed five of his seven pass attempts in two appearances last season. Running back Brandon Hall (concussion) is listed as questionable, but is expected to be held out. College of Faith, a first-year program from Arkansas, is on the NCAA's list of non-countable opponents for not meeting NCAA accreditation standards, so statistics from the game will not be recognized by the NCAA. According to College of Faith coach Sherwyn Thomas, 75 percent of the team's players are in their first season of college football. Players' ages range from 18-25. Thomas said at least 25 players will travel to Valparaiso, and he is hoping for 35. The Warriors lost 68-0 to Division II McKendree in the season opener on Sept. 5 and did not play a Week 2 game. College of Faith had minus-4 yards of offense against McKendree.

So, essentially, this is not a real game? W's and L's are statistics, right? As an NCAA team, does that mean we can't at least take credit for a W?

I really hope that at the time we scheduled this game it looked like CoF would be a first time team on the order of MO Baptist. I'm somewhat embarrassed that we've even scheduled a team like this, especially with the our recent desire to upgrade the football schedule. I respect what the CoF coach and team are attempting to do - those kids deserve our respect - but they should be scheduling DIII and lesser NAIA type teams. I hope that any payment to CoF really helps them in the future.
Don't forget, this was a late change because of the change in scheduling the GLVC enforced when they expanded. By this point, other maybe a few DIIIs or NAIAs, the contracts were signed well in advance, so we were stuck. We can't blame Coach Cecchini for something he had no control over. I mean if we'd known this was happening 4 years ago, then it's on the coach for not getting a contract set with a better team, but this occurred after most FB contracts were signed and sealed.
Yes. And what he (and now by extension we) knew at the time was analogous to MBU. How would he have known that COF would be classified as a non-countable opponent or that they would show up with 21-25 players. As I mentioned earlier, with 20/20 hindsight, he/we might have passed completely on a game this weekend. But it is what it is. Pray for an injury free game on both sides.

I'm sure that the CoF from North Carolina is in the same boat, so when they played games last year they didn't count towards the opponents stats/records. That team also scored no points - not sure how many showed up to the games last year.
I doubt we will set an all time scoring record as that stands at 110 versus Lewis in 1923. The caliber of opponent may be closer to our very first one in 1919 when we played the Chicago YMCA! I'm thinking 66-0
From the COF Warrior (ARK) Web Site such that it is.

I couldn't even find COF Charlotte's schedule on line (but they are traveling to ARK to play the Warriors) That could end in a 0-0 tie.
We're not the only FCS school on the schedule -- Texas Southern of the SWAC in there as well.
Time to fry the ham and eggs! It's gameday!

But then my evil twin, Skippy, is whispering in my ear "hey they had enough money to buy uniforms and pads just like us, and if they show up they know what they signed up for. Tough petunias, the result is on them. Our job is to kick butt regardless."
Funny you mention the unis. Whatever version of this "school" played Davidson last year was given money by Davidson for unis.
I go back and forth as to whether this game is a good thing, bad thing or should be played at all. Right now I'm leaning no.

Its' listed as being on ESPN3.

valpochgo is somewhat correct in that it the video associated with COF is still run by Sherwyn Thomas who seems to be everywhere surrounding the COF no matter where located.
The McKendree video presents the fact that this game would be more competitive vs. Valpo HS.
At least we get to see it on ESPN 3.

Well you have to give credit to the COF kids. They were beat up and exhausted and kept fighting. Not sure what we gained although getting our third string quarterback a mess of reps sure can't hurt. We also got to see a bunch of kids in a game situation. Fun for those guys who never see the field who got plenty of playing time and some scores, interceptions and fumble recoveries. I underestimated the score by 20 and the all time record was clearly possible if Coach had allowed it/
I noticed that at the end of the VUAthletics site article that it said Valpo was 0-2 going into the USD game. So it turns out that it appears that we are not taking credit for the win. The right thing to do. 72, my thoughts exactly. I followed on game tracker. By the half I wanted to help COF somehow. Glad they shortened the 2nd half to 2 10 minute qtrs.

I thought I read either here or elsewhere that the game could not count because COF was not considered accredited.
Yep. Read it here. Paul Oren also covered that in his pre-game article. Seems the NCAA ruled on the non-countable status AFTER Valpo signed the contract
How many people were at the game? It was sad watching the game on ESPN 3 with only 4 people in the visitor bleachers. From TV it only looked like 10 people might have been there.

I wonder if Valpo was unaware of the entire COF situation. Mr. Thomas seems like he has a great deal of Professor Harold Hill in his DNA.
So does this game count on the record or does it not? I have seen mixed responses for this.
As others have stated, I was surprised to find that the win and the stats do not count from this game. I kept thinking that it was taking time for them to update the stats, but then checked into it further. What a waste of a game...
Tex, I agree and disagree on the"waste" aspect.
Waste YES: No stats, no win, no challenge.
Waste NO: After the miserable performance vs. SHU, VU needed to play against an(y) opponent and show they could execute and demonstrate intensity.
Will the staff be satisfied? I think not. They gave up over 100 yards of passing on just 4 completions. That's enough for me, if I were the staff, to push the D even harder. And although I did not watch the stream, I'll bet that the O gave the staff lots to work on too.

There were enough plays which, if I were coach, I'd focus on with specific units. The OL had some breakdowns in the run game. WRs had some issues blocking on the edge.
For ESPN and Sagarin, Valpo is 1-2. Could Oren be wrong regarding this or are various sites reporting Valpo's record incorrectly.
IMO, to claim a win again an unaccedited school like this would be a disgrace. It is like my daughter winning a dance competition where she is the only competitor in her age group and level. A nice warm fuzzy with no substance.
I understand we needed to replace a game and that there were only one weekend open, unless we wanted to have the game during our PFL season. Still, we should have done a better job in vetting this team before scheduling. I think we could have gotten a better scrimmage from about thirty 19-21 year old former HS football players within a 10 mile drive of Valpo.
Valpo was mentioned on ESPN college football weekend summary http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13705966/ohio-state-shaky-win-alabama-early-loss-stanford-shocking-upset-sets-stage-historic-2015 (http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/13705966/ohio-state-shaky-win-alabama-early-loss-stanford-shocking-upset-sets-stage-historic-2015)
McGee: Michigan State? Ole Miss? This ain't your granddaddy's top 5
Ryan McGee sizes up the college football landscape, from the shake-up in the SEC West to a lackluster weekend for the ACC to the Big Ten's playoff push. Plus Memphis and, um, Valpo? Wild Week 3.
Extra Point: File this under the "See? Dana Holgorsen was right!" On Saturday, the Valparaiso Crusaders won 86-0, rushing for 333 yards and racking up 10 sacks. But none that will ever appear in any official record book. Why? Because their opponent was the Arkansas-based College of Faith, and while the Warriors might come out to play, the first-year Division II program is on the NCAA's Schools That Aren't Real list. OK, that's not what the list is called. It's officially the "non-countable opponents" list, a roster of schools that are either too small, too new or too fake to be recognized as a legit contest. And, as some intrepid Internet sleuths pointed out, that non-countable opponent has unusable uniforms. One photo that started making the social media rounds shows College of Faith with holes in their britches as big as the holes in their defense. No truth to the rumor that Baylor has scheduled them for 2016.

Water over the dam and we've said as much a number of times even before the actual 'scrimmage.' Lesson learned for the staff and AD. It won't happen again. Let's move on.

Pretty embarrassing especially coming from a cynical columnist perspective. There are a bunch of D-II and FCS schools that are in the same boat as us McKendree, Texas Southern, Davidson last year vs. the Charlotte branch, etc. I guess if we had beaten them 56-0 no one would have paid attention.
Our score Saturday reminds me, and I might remind all of us, that on October 16, 2010
Valpo was beaten 86-7 by fellow PFL member Jacksonville. (FYI - In 2009 we lost 49-20. In 2008 lost 40-24, but in 2007 we won 29-27). Weird ???
Extended article on COF/UOF. Valpo does get a mention or two.

I started to read this article, and either skipped over or skimmed a lot of it. I don't understand how this school still exists, other than to be a "Frauds In Action" program? I mean if its just a way for some kids to get off the streets, and the founder some cash, then it's working, but if it's meant to be a serious collegiate school and program, then it failed from the start. I'm honestly glad the NCAA excluded any games against these frauds to be true exhibitions that schools can pay to play, but don't have to even make mention that those games happened. I hope that Valpo never falls for this fraud scheduling issue again.

What gets me is that we scheduled them after Davidson did in 2014. We should have made the call to Davidson.
When COF was added to the schedule, there might not have been another option. Recall the COF game date was set aside for St. Joe's to come to Valpo, but the GLVC added a team to the conference, which meant they couldn't play us to accommodate their conference scheduling. I do hope the athletic director and Coach Cecchini have remedied this so it doesn't happen again.
I believe that the slot in 2016 is taken by Trinity International (NAIA) and MLB addressed the COF issue in his September AD's report. He explained the whys of the COF scheduling (ValpoRun was right) and explained their annual scheduling commitment going forward: 1 scholarship FCS game, 1 second tier FCS game (NEC, Patriot, Ivy) and one either D-II or NAIA game.

for next year it is Illinois State, Sacred Heart in CT and Trinity Intl. For '17 it is Montana, Duquense and Trinity Intl.
Getting back to COF. It was apparently a case of they were the only available opponent.
The entire COF issue has been around for at least a few years and before Davidson. I read a local article on the "school" and the sports programs about 3 years ago and it was pretty much the same shyster angle.

You think we could have Curryed a favor from Davidson. We could have Stated we needed a Golden blessing.
Remember prior to this year COF games counted.
Their schedule this year included 2 scholarship FCS schools.
Also, why do we play 12 games?
In reality this year we played only 10 games as the COF game was labeled as an exhibition.
BTW, what's wrong with 12 games?
I think 2014 was a one off. We usually schedule 11.

Looking at FCS, most schedule 11 I am guessing because of post season. Still I like the idea of adding a home game as #12 if allowed.
