Title: 2/26- Milwaukee @ UWM Panther Arena
Post by: HailVU2014 on February 22, 2016, 02:21:02 AM
I know that starting game threads is traditionally talksalot's job, but I thought I would start this thread since there are a few last minute announcements on this game. First, some people may have missed that this game was selected to be at 6 pm CT on ESPN2. (Detroit at Oakland is on ESPNU at 8 pm CT.)

[tweet]700439212718329856[/tweet]

Also, Monday, February 22 is your last day to sign up for the annual bus trip, pre-game social, and/or tickets in the Valpo Block for this game. Lots of people making the trip up to Milwaukee this year. We should have a very good visitors showing on ESPN2. We really do seem to bring a great crowd to the Milwaukee game every year and personally, Milwaukee is my favorite HL Road Game to attend.

Also, there is a Valpo Basketball Watch Party on Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth for those in that area.

Love the milwaukee trip. Always stop at Usingers Meat Market and the Cheese Mart in the historic third ward. Do a little pre or post (or both) drinking on that strip too. Dinner usually is between the Brat House, Hofbrahaus, or Lakefront Brewery depending on time. Last month, I made it there in 2 hours and 10 min leaving from the university so not a bad drive at all.

Thank you for starting this...I was just looking up to see what venue PantherU was using this year.   with the 6pm start this year, can't make it up for the Friday gig... but I do have my tickets for the Resch center on Sunday... Fouse and Love on Senior day...

Took the trip last year. It was a good time at Mr. Nunamaker's (spell check) home and then watching Tevonn posterize their big guy in front of all dozen of their students.

Valpo wins 80-58....I don't like Milwaukee much.

I remember being in line at the concession stand at halftime, and the folks in line looked like all of the Valpo chairback seat holders were there.

So you were the youngest guy in line by 15 to 20 years?   ;)

I'm curious as to how Tevonn and Darien play. When Darien was in a massive slump at the beginning of the year, I posted something similar. It was after the UIC game where I thought he was finally breaking out of his slump, despite only going 1-4 on threes. He seemed to be shooting much better, despite not putting up great percentages yet. When he was slumping, his shots were missing by a mile, and when he regained form, they were rattling in and out. Then he went on a tear shooting. I think Tevonn may have hit that moment vs Detroit. He went 0-5 from 3, but his shot looked much cleaner and each miss seemed close. Perhaps that's just wishful thinking, but I think Tevonn is going to have a breakout game vs a less athletic Milwaukee team.

Unfortunately, Darien seems to be slumping again. 14 points in the past 3 games, going 5-19 shooting (0-7 from deep). I think you can officially call him a streaky shooter. I hope he can break out of his slump in these next few games as well.

Finally, Peters had perhaps his worst game of the year vs Milwaukee last time Valpo played them; only scored 7 points on 10 shots. Peters is definitely going to be hungry for revenge.

Valpo opens as a 5 point favorite on the road. Smallest vegas line for Valpo since the road game at Oakland.

Yes please.  Game plan is to drive from ord to Milwaukee and stop at the adidas  mall at gurney mills.  We lack these high end products in okieland.  Then find a pub before the game.  I've been boycotting Wisconsin for 13 years.  I was in a bad car accident when I was a student at valpo while driving from campus to the Dells.  I was within a hour of the dells and the accident occurred.  Jaws of live and life flight.  But no serious injuries thanks be to God.  Sorry be Debbie downer story.  Go crusaders and any restaurant suggestions are appreciated.

Ugly's Pub on old world 3rd has some good food and is owned by a former Valpo alumn. It's a little pricy, but the service is great. The logo is brown and gold!

Asumming that you'll go to the alum function tonight before the game, so Ugly's is a good post game watering hole only a walk from the arena. If you are doing the whole weekend and staying in MKE through Saturday night, any Bartolotta restaurant is a good bet. They generally are upscale higher $$$ end but worth it on a nice Saturday night. If you are by yourself or with one other person, they serve dinners right at the bar:  Harbor House (right on the lake, great sea food flown in daily); Lake Park Bistro ( French flavor $$$); Rumpus Room (Reasonable. On Water St across from the Marcus Center performing Arts Center and right amongst the Water Street watering hole district with tons of pubs); Mader's (like Ugly's, in the Old World 3rd -- authentic German food).

Now if you go up to Green Bay, the pickings are a little leaner. There is alway the 1919 Kitchen and Tap right in the atrium of Lambeau Field and just a short walk to the Resch - very good comfort food and a great bar. After that there are all the pubs, franchise places, and corner bars in the vicinity of Lambeau/Resch.

If you go to Lambeau, TAKE A GUIDED TOUR! It's a very well run tour and gives you a great feeling for the uniqueness of the GBPackers.

Pretty sure he no longer works there. Like "had to be escorted from the premises" no longer works there. It wasn't a good situation.

The places to go...Major Goolsby's. Dehne's Upper 90. The Pub Club.

Sounds like a different thread. But, I can't resist dragging out some family memories.

Historically, our go-to spots for Green Bay nostalgia were Kroll's... looks like Kroll's East is the historic one. Actually... I can't tell. East? West? Looks like they both have some history.

And... for ice cream... was there a Dean's? I can't seem to find any sign of it. Might have been in a neighboring town, not Green Bay proper. Legend has it that my dad's go-to was a marshmallow sundae.

My uncle, RIP, gave tours at the Packer Hall of Fame.

Well we beat them pretty comfortably the first game and that was with Peters playing like crap. Wouldn't be shocked by a loss, but Valpo clearly has more talent and is way more athletic. Valpo by 12, Hammink 16 points.

Oh yeah, Krolls is where it is at for sure. I hate the packers. But, have to admit, the guided tour is pretty cool. Also like going to the wildlife sanctuary there because they usually have different animals they are rescuing every time I get there. Doors county always a nice trip too.

But first, let's get this w tonight fellas

Not only are the referees bad but these ESPN announcers are horrible they have no idea what they're talking about when They talk about players. TEWON Walker, D Walker transferred to Milwaukee,  One of Milwaukee's players was wearing Keith Carter's jersey when he made a three for the Crusaders... and many other gaffs.

The craziest part is the lack of calls Valpo gets driving to the paint, which they're trying to do since the refs are happy with the whistle on the other end. The traveling call on Peters? Oh my god. After a handful of tick tack calls on Valpo you call a TRAVELING??

Frankly, Valpo's defense was terrible, Worst defensive half they have played all year. Sure there were some bad calls, but players were out of position often, Need a much more solid second  half.

Both Walkers with deep 2s, barely inside the arc, with lots of shot clock remaining.  This was our plan coming out of half?

The biggest thing at risk tonight was team confidence. As long as that wasn't threatened there was very little actually at stake. Sometimes it showed.

A down to the wire win is a wonderful thing. BIG!!!

About to board a flight to ORD from 70 degree Tulsa and then drive to Milwaukee.  How are the roads?

Totally clear now. Good thing you weren't flying 48 hours earlier.
There were never any weather issues in Chicago except a little snow. The bad weather issues were in Kankakee County and Indiana.

So did ESPN have any excuse for not sending the PBP and color to Milwaukee?

Did the announcers at one point say Vashil had graduated from Milwaukee?  I'm pretty sure they did.

Jabril had two horrible defense efforts in crucial moment of this game.  Poor D on the Tiby post move down low and the other play he was lazy on a box out.  I know everyone loves him but every time he gets the ball in his hand he either turns it over or shoots a horrible shot.  The 3's he's made this year are luck and I cringe when he takes them.  He needs to bang down low and rebound the ball.

Looking at the Carter 3 you could tell he was completely confident in making that.  Glad to see him step up and hit a huge shot.

They've been doing that a lot... Adam Amin has done several games from the studio... and yes, they told the story of Vashil on senior day at Milwaukee last year... and repeated Milwaukee several times....

Credit Milwaukee for a much better performance tonight than in game-1 at the ARC. We could verily easily see them again in the semi's at Detroit.

First- nobody hits 15 of 25 3 point shots by being lucky. Second- be ready to do lots of cringing come tournament time because that is something that even good defensive teams might fail to cover.

The sample size is large enough to where Jubril's threes are good to take. You could tell they were guarding him close from the three. I think his defense is respectable enough - I love his ability to knock down open mid range jumpers. He has a 57.5% efg rate, which is 3rd on the team. Surprisingly, he's 2nd on the team in defensive rating, so he's clearly not been a defensive liability like years past.

Adekoya can shoot. He takes good shots for the most part. Compare him to back up post players of years past. He's kind of a stud

UW-M did win two Big 10 games on the road so they have poise.  But hard to believe when you see the players individually.

Is it just me or does Milwaukee always seem to have a team with odd looking players and offensive movment?   They get it done, and it always surprises me because they look bad doing it.   Maybe they recruit for the unathletic, but productive player.  They had that one guy a few years ago who went about 6'6" and 320.

I think Peters was fouled before the ball got stripped on that last play before regulation.

I also think Tiby traveled on his wild 3 shot.  To me he took steps without putting the ball down and they didn't call.  Great D on that play.

I thought so too at first, and was upset at the refs.

Watching the replay, it looked more like Peters fumbled it rather than getting stripped, and then I was less bothered by the refs.

The win at Wisconsin was impressive. The win at Minnesota? Eh. They're awful.

UWM seems to always have a team full of big ugly white dudes. And they made plays down the stretch - almost lost it when Arians hit that step back three. Then on the other end he takes a "charge" - well, the refs saw it that way, never mind him shuffling his feet while flopping over. Every time Valpo made a big play in OT, UWM would answer with a big shot. But Valpo made plays too and played smart. Bryce clearing everyone out so Carter could go 1 on 1 at the end was a good move. We missed the 2 for 1 opportunity vs Wright State trying to set up a play, so clearing everyone out to have Carter drive or pull up was awesome to see. Then on the other end, Tiby threw up a wild shot trying to draw a foul on a three - horrible decision there. Good to see Bryce out-coaching Jeter.

Peters was fouled. The refs were awful for both teams.

I don't know which was worst, the announcers or the officiating.  Oh, now I remember, THEY WERE BOTH TERRIBLE!

Watched the replay today, much less stressful when you know the outcome.  Pretty great overtime to watch with both teams answering big shot with big shot.  Loved the "Let's go Valpo chant with 3.3 seconds left.  You know that you're team is something special in a league when opponents are making t-shirts for when you come to town!

Also, a couple asides:

* The mustard seats they installed when they switched the name to the Panther Arena recently are really ugly. They look like they're from the 70s. I think they should have went with black seats... can't believe they managed to make it look worse than the red and blue seats.
* ESPN did a 30 for 30 in the old MECCA court. Amazing how boring and uninspired the UWM court is.
* Decent student section for once, but man, tons of empty seats in the first 4 or 5 rows.
* ESPN, get your stuff together.
* Sit down in front of the camera!
* Those announcers were horrible. Tewonn? Cmon man!

Witty, subtle but with just the right amount of sarcasm, and certainly high on the laugh scale for creativity. Not

Sorry I didn't know oklahomamick was going to be at the game or I would have said hi.

I sat in the Valpo fan section and we had PantherU (BlackPantherUWM on this forum, I think?) in the section just below us and DunneDeal in our section and the 3 of us were up yelling at the refs several times during the game, and I think each time one of us yelled, the other side was in full agreement.

The one that stood out for me was when Darien got bodied into a traveling call.  I stood up at yelled, "WHAT THE HELL????????????????????????" as loud as I could and simultaneously PantherU stood up and looked back at me with a look that expressed the exact same sentiment.

The 3 of us were in agreement on just about every single call.  It was one of the worse officiated games I have ever seen -- both ways.  I wasn't mad because we were getting screwed or anything like that, I was mad because the players and the coaches were giving full effort and the refs were sleepwalking through it by comparison.

I did notice from Twitter that the announcers were in the studio which -- I guess -- works in theory, but man the idiocy I was hearing about (haven't listened to the replay yet) was something else.  Sounds like it was thoroughly unprofessional.

I don't really like it myself, but then even when they do show up it's not clear they spend enough time (or any time at all in some cases) with the respective media guides and SIDs to make sure they get things right.
