Post by: talksalot on February 09, 2017, 09:49:16 PM
Well, that was fun.  Karys with the only Centier Bank 3-pointer of the second half!  Up next the Barton/Porsche/Moore game... Time to pack the ARC for the last Saturday game of the year.

From Thursday's action:

Youngstown State
(8-16, 4-9 Horizon League) 49 32 81

Illinois-Chicago
(11-12, 6-6 Horizon League) 49 35 84

Lets see... who to guard... who to guard... so, why not check out the box score from this game...

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/boxscore?gameId=400918560

Cameron Morse... 18 of 38 (6-15 from 3)  from the field, 44 points to go with 3 rebounds.

Total of 16 assists on 32 baskets; 10 steals.... 21 offensive and 21 defensive rebounds.

We need to play a full 40 minutes and not look forward on the schedule.  Next to last home game.  Last weekend home game to honor previous player Lubos Barton, and another chance to see future Valpo HOF member in action.

We need to make YSU pay for wanting an up-tempo game.  Show the HL what we can do.

Valpo   89
YSU     61

This is an astute group.   :)

Wish I could see Lubos recognized for HOF.  In hindsight, that Lubos team of 1999 really shocked the world in its first two games.  Oldsters on this board will remember how we thought VU hoops would fall off the map again after Bryce's gang went Sweet 16 and the cupboard was bare other than a good Croatian forward whose name I forget.

Freshmen Lubos, Stovall and Tonagel were a "Fab 3" of sorts in 1999 and that team gave Marlyland a run.  Truly amazing.  Were there more in that class?  I am forgetting someone. They beat Seton Hall and South Carolina to win whatever tourney it was.  I would guess their RPIs might have been higher than Alabama and BYU even though that Vegas win was a great one too.

Anyone else hear the 'Free Jubril' chants coming from the student section lol? Also a very good showing from the student section. I think the slowing down of sorority/fraternity events is having an impact, also a saturday night game. Sounds like great energy in the building!

Suppose to be a half interview Lubos Barton and also another halftime interview Commissioner LeCrone... I hope whoever interviews him grills him about the Motor City Disaster. I'm sure he's going to be trying to promote it at halftime.

I'd pay for someone to tell him (preferably during the interview), "This right here at the ARC is three times the atmosphere you'll ever have at your dumpster fire neutral site tournament arrangement. Oh, and #FreeJubril". Regardless of if he's involved with the Jubril situation.

Cameron Morse is a hell of a player. That was an impressive long range 3 at the very of the half. Him and Hartfield have kept Youngstown State in this game.

AP seemed very tentative with those 2 fouls at the end of the game. He sat for 11min. Shane, Tevonn and Lexus played well and good defense from Derrik.

In the interview he actually admitted that the Horizon League greatly depends on Detroit-Mercy and Oakland fans to pack the building. Its such a competitive advantage that they basically get a home field advantage because literally in their backyard and a sizable distance for every other team to travel.

Tournament was so much better before. The competitive advantage SHOULD go the regular season champions! Made the conference regular season mean more. You don't want the Green Bay situation in the NCAA tourney last yr. Green Bay was embarrassing. VU had a legit shot to win a game and upside to go further.

This game should NOT be close.  Where is the effort?

Morse and Santiago have hit some big shots. And we just got complacent in the second half and were giving up those 2nd chance rebounds. We've done that all year which allows some teams to go on those runs to get back into the games.

AP hit some big shots

I just can't believe Slocum's timeout after they seized momentum on a fadeaway 3 by Morse. They were rolling and Valpo was out of sorts on offense. Lottich was able to draw up a play for Peters who brought it back to 4.  He's such a horrible coach.

Wow the refs are little quick with the whistle this game. Maybe this whole year... Don't like the way officiating is trending in college basketball. I don't want college basketball to become the NBA with not allowing any contact. They already got rid of hand checks.

We've been running that play late in games against the press for years. You'd think if our broadcaster can see it coming for the first time each game, our opponents (especially HL ones) could too.

Sort of a sloppy game but overall fun game to watch! We need games like this where other teams make strong runs and have us scrap to fight them off. Some positives and negatives.

Huge game coming up next! We need a strong showing vs Oakland. We can't allow those lulls in effort and energy when we're up. Also how many times do we need have those stretches of giving up second chance rebounds to learn from our mistakes? The freshman big guys are no longer "freshman", they've both played big time minutes this year to know whats needed. Not all bad though. They both had they moments. Some good defense from both tonight other then those momentary let downs on rebounds.

QuoteReally wish us as fans or MLB could do something about Detroit motor madness.  Oakland really pushed for it too.

Who voted on this Motor City Tournament? Was it all the teams or was it just Horizon League HQ who decided it? How the heck does Oakland have that much "pull" being the second newest member in the conference?

It's just such a joke that its even considered a "neutral" site for a tournament when 2 teams are within a few miles of the arena!! It's not even in a central location for all the fan-bases to travel. I know this sounds biased but it should near Chicago or in Indiana somewhere to makes it more centered in the middle of the conference. Plus Detroit (Joe Louis Arena) isn't exactly a great destination city. Not somewhere I want to go walking around and site seeing either. I get they're building a new building soon but still the tournament is a failure, imo.

I'll guess they list 4,500. Maybe more. I was really impressed by the mezzanine when I walked in 6:55. Apparently people were lined up at 6:00 for the jersey giveaway (that 1,000 was gone before 6:25).

Student section looked comfortably full. Not overflowing like a game or two this season. But they were loud! Free Jubril! And as usual lots of students elsewhere.

Alec wearing #23 was fantastic.

Does that have any relevance to Jubril's roster spot? Or, for one night, if a player's not dressing can you just borrow his number?

Doesn't make any sense. I get why Detroit and Oakland would but every other....?

My guess is they wanted it to stop being at Valpo from a competition standpoint and apparently the Horizon League is making a guaranteed $200k each year from hosting it there and the other teams knew it wouldn't be hosted near their cities unless they won the regular season anyways.

The Horizon League HQ should not have allowed Detroit or Oakland to take part in that vote since it literally is a home for them and those were 2 automatic votes.

Glad to see the student section filled up and also the whole ARC. It looked like a sell out to me (4900+). This is how it should have been all year. I was happy to hear the Free Jubril chants. At least the students are finally getting it together. Also did anyone else noticed during warmups Jubril had his right knee all taped up with what I think was ice and was stretching it out. I even thought he limped a little. Of course I am paranoid anyways.

I didn't mind Detroit as a city. The downtown area seemed nice enough. I enjoyed my coney dog. Didn't get around the city too much, so can't comment on whether there were interesting neighborhoods, etc. I enjoyed venturing into Canada. I don't mind supporting a city a bit while it's down.

But, I'm not sure Detroit is special enough to warrant a long-term deal. And not particularly central. And, I did enjoy the previous tournament arrangements. At least while we were winning!

Kiser goes 114+ minutes with just one TO then gets his second and then third in a 3 minute stretch. Did he really carry it on that drive down the lane? He struggled on defense as well.

Pull his scholarship! Wait! He doesn't have one yet.  ;)

Never before saw Alec play the matador defense. I think he was sent back in with specific instructions not to quickly pick up his third foul, and he didn't.  ::)

Yeah, I don't want to bash on any city either - every city has their pluses and minuses. It's not like Valpo has a ton of stuff for visiting fans, but that wasn't the point.

I can see the Horizon's motivation for moving it to a neutral court. I didn't agree, but they needed the cash after they blew the Butler finals money on absolutely nothing. One of the biggest mistakes was moving it one year too early (when they had 1 great team and nobody else even remotely close + the panick-add of NKU one year too soon). Amazing how 10 years from now LeCrone and Slocum will somehow have jobs in the same place.

Definitely makes you wonder.

My only fear with the #23 was that they might have heard that Jubril was out for the season, and it was a sort of memorial.

From Alec's language, at least how it was quoted on tiwtter ("not playing right now" or similar), it seems like that's probably not the case.

Matt's answer to the "Did Alec run this by you in advance?" question was great. Do you suppose he just took off his warmup top, and there was #23?

Just want to point out that Oakland had one of its best teams in school history last year with Kay Felder...and their supposed home court advantage led them to a grand total of 0 wins in the Horizon League tournament last year.

But keep beating that dead horse into the ground.

Apples and oranges. Oakland's "home court advantage" at the JLA, while not negligible, wouldn't be nearly as significant as Valpo's advantage playing at the ARC.

Personally, I'm less mad that it's in Detroit than I am about the HL denying home court to the top team that has earned it, whoever it is in any given year.

It unquestionably was an advantage. The fact that they pissed the advantage away doesn't change that fact.

Now, fast forward to this year's tournament. Let's suppose that Oakland and Valpo meet in the championship game. You don't think that Oakland's 4 or 5 thousand fans compared to Valpo's 4 or 5 hundred fans gives them an advantage?  Why do you think Oakland lobbied so hard to get the tournament moved there?  That was nothing short of a coup - a complete power shift orchestrated by the Oakland athletic department and supported by a bunch of lazy HL programs tired of Valpo's success.

Not an advantage?  Please...

The Joe is a pretty beat up arena, and perhaps the HL got a sweet deal to rent it out for the tournament.

Wh, wel said.

Let's add that's it's a huge advantage in recruiting.

Besides a couple of NIT games at home, the best environment has been valpo HL semi and championship games at the ARC.  Im sure we had recruits in the house for those.

There's nothing more than winning a tournament championship.  Except when it's on your home floor, in front of a packed arc your senior year.

I only wish our athletic department was more vocal and condescending about the move as we are.

This was pushed by Oakland and wouldn't surprise me if they even created the idea.

This is one reason I dislike Oakland.  i have more...but will put on the Oakland game thread....haha

for the sake of posterity...

VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Shane Hammink scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Valparaiso beat Youngstown State 82-72 on Saturday night.

Hammink was 8 of 14 from the floor for the Crusaders (21-5, 11-2 Horizon). Alec Peters added 22 points and seven rebounds, Tevonn Walker had 14 points and six rebounds and Lexus Williams chipped in 11 points.

Valparaiso went on top early and led all the way, building to a 43-33 advantage at the break.

The Crusaders maintained the lead throughout the second half. Youngstown State cut it to one, 65-64, on a Cameron Morse 3-pointer with 6:48 to go but Peters replied with a 3 of his own and Hammink turned a defensive rebound into a dunk to make it 73-64 with 2:59 left. Youngstown State never threatened after that.

Morse finished with 25 points to lead the Penguins (10-17, 4-10) who have lost four straight.

Quote from: Pgmado on February 12, 2017, 12:41:37 AMJust want to point out that Oakland had one of its best teams in school history last year with Kay Felder...and their supposed home court advantage led them to a grand total of 0 wins in the Horizon League tournament last year.

But keep beating that dead horse into the ground.

As they say in the sciences, the plural of anecdote isn't data (let along the singular!).

It was a strange tournament last year, beyond doubt. The home court advantage isn't the same for Oakland as if the game were in Rochester, sure. But, I well imagine Valpo would jump at the chance to play in Rosemont or even at UIC instead of Detroit. Hopefully bring a thousand fans or more instead of hundreds.

If the tournament were an hour away, I'd be there; two hours away, I'd try to make it; four hours just isn't possible.

Maybe we move this thread to the Horizon League section?

The site is a huge blow to Valpo...likely from envy as we've said. And the optics are horrible on TV.

But geography has crept east on us and Oakland leveraged that.  Indiana used to be the center.  But we have replaced Butler and Loyola with Oakland and Northern Kentucky.  Pull out a map and look at how far west we sit now with UIC and the Wisconsins.  We now have an Ohio-centric MAC footprint.

Hate it!

MLB must make a statement regarding jubril and if indeed the athletic department is as unhappy as we are about motor city madness than that Needs to be expressed as well.

Barring one of those games where we lay an egg, I don't see this game being close.

Was it close? We won by 10!
