Just setting the stage. You guys might set up game threads but there is no break between games.
We open with Kent State (3-1). They just lost to SELU 66-70. Their record so far:
YSU - Won - 111-78
Ohio Christian - Won - 90-45
Miss Valley State - Won - 80-67
SELU - Loss - 66-70
Then we play UNC Wilmington......
NC Wesleyan - Won - 105-81
@ Davidson - Loss - 81-108
Campbell - Won - 88-84
What's the forum prognosis?
PS: if you'd like I can change the icon to a game thread instead just let me know.

Seems like VU Athletics is confirming no video from Savannah. 95.1 will be on the air, should be Todd on the call. The 95.1 call will apparently be available via streaming audio.
Quote
The game will not be video streamed, but as always can be heard live on WVUR (95.1 FM, Valparaiso) and online at ValpoAthletics.com.
My sister has a place here where we're spending Thanksgiving, so we'll be part of the VU contingent in the stands. There's an alumni event planned that, at last check, had 30 or so registered. (Update: 36 people - which could be for floor seats, and/or for the reception. And I think I recognize at least two other names from the message board. Hopefully we'll have more than that in the cheaper seats - where most of my family will be sitting.)
It does look like two W's are a very real possibility. Teams have hung with Valpo for 30 minutes, but it does feel like our crazy deep bench lets us run away in the end.
Will be interested to see when we really get tested. Utah State? Purdue? This Friday?

Sorry for the short hand - could have been clearer. I've corrected it above. Streaming audio and 95.1 FM only, no video. Per ValpoAthletics (that's for the Friday game, but presumably will be the same Saturday).

If Utah State doesn't test us than shirley (yes, I called you shirley) Purdue will not only test us but possibly blow us away with those dreaded big men with athletic skill that we will not have faced until then. We certainly aren't a team without weaknesses. Let's not sleep on Kent State or UNCW either because if we feel superior and take them lightly those teams can sneak in and steal one.
The last time we played Kent was an OT thriller in Kent. It was the intentional missed FT, rebound put back to tie at the buzzer game. Is my memory fading or was it Kevin VW who rebounded the put back? Refreshed my memory -- Buggs missed FT, KVW put back https://dks.library.kent.edu/cgi-bin/kentstate?a=d&d=dks20121119-01.2.27# (https://dks.library.kent.edu/cgi-bin/kentstate?a=d&d=dks20121119-01.2.27#)
Oh, and to think, that wasn't the most exciting buzzer shot of the year.... 8-)
It would appear that UNCW is the stronger of the 2 teams. Probably a good thing that we play them the 2nd day since our strength is our depth.
However, I have a feeling that we might struggle in 1 of these games and lose. Not sure which one. Hope I am wrong.
We win both, but the UNCW game will be close until the end.

It is great that there is a VUAA event and a reserved block of tix for the weekend. Really it is.
However, like other such events, its marketing and promotion seem to be rather passive. I do not recall getting a Valpo blast email about this (or other such events in the past). Even though I wouldn't even be able to attend, i would welcome those kinds of communications just to let me know what's going on around the country. It would also contribute to a bit of Valpo pride knowing we are doing those kinds of things.
I realize that, maybe, there may have been VUAA posts earlier on social media like FB and Twitter, but I do not follow either one, though I might check from time to time. Personally, I'd like to see more proactive contact directly to me. But that's just me.

I think they target the east coast and southern alumni when they do the email blast. If an alum will be in the area or is willing to travel to Savannah from the midwest then they probably already know to go the VUAA website to look for the events.

Vu72, I haven't bought tickets yet. I'm going to do it later today. I checked the savannah invitional wesbite and you can buy tickets through the wesbite and print them at home for free or pick up at will call for a couple extra dollars. It looks like they have tickets going for $20 and $10 for the day and I think it gets you into both games the day you go. I think you have to get separate tickets for each day if you plan to go to both days. Not a bad price overall.
The spread: Valpo -6.5
Kent State is picked to finish 2nd in the MAC East behind Buffalo. Western Michigan and Ball State are picked 1 and 2, respectively in the MAC West.
Seeing as today is Game Day, I've now changed the thread icon to a game icon.
Valpo's first test away from home against a higher quality mid-major. Close game, but Valpo pulls it out in the end with key defensive stops late.

Can Kent stay with our speed, athleticism and depth?
Also intrigued with how Loyola does.
I think our depth really is the key. Teams that stay close for 30 minutes eventually wear out in the last 10 minutes or so and we start increasing the lead with some truly athletic play by Evelyn, Golder, Bradford, Burton, McMillan, etc. It is so exciting to see how athletically talented we are in large numbers.
Valpo 91
Kent State 72
When we come up against a team that pulls ahead of us by 7-10 points for 30 minutes I truly would love to see us come storming back in the last 10 minutes and pull out a squeaker. Now that would be fun.
Question from the Stupid Question Department:
If both Loyola and Valpo win out, who is the Savannah Invitational winner? I do not believe there is a "championship" game. Co champs? Tie breaker? Margin of victory? What?
Also, part of this tourney included SWLU and Samford. Where did they go? Thanks for the memories and disappear? What if both had beaten the two MVC teams? Do they advance or are they just fodder?
My understanding is they decide alphabetically in descending order by first letter of the university name. If both universities begin with the same letter, the tie-breaker is first letter of the team name in ascending order. It appears to be well thought out and completely fair.

Apparently there was suppose to be a ACC opponent in this tournament but apparently they dropped out of it. It is a bit annoying that there is no stream. It's 2017. But I appreciate Todd & Aaron on the call. Both are doing a great on the radio broadcast.
Maybe the City of Savannah chose not to provide a stream because they wanted to sell a few more tickets.
Linssen coming up big in this game. 8 points (4-4 in 6min) & 2 REB so far. He was forced into action because of the foul trouble.
Does anyone else get an error every time they try to listen to this TuneIn site?

I understand your point, but I doubt that any Savannah locals would be streaming this instead of going to the game (unless they were alums of one of the teams) and the number of non-locals that would have had the lack of video actually be the deciding factor in traveling to Savannah is negligible. The lack of video is inexcusable and I sent the event an email expressing my displeasure.

This sucks, I wish I could hear how this is happening! Linssen appears all over the place, and Kent State is turning the ball over like crazy.
Man, these slow starts kill me, but Valpo's got so many different looks that you feel it's often just a matter of time before they find something that works to get back into it. Go Marty!

It might be your internet connection. I've had difficultly using Tune In on my phone in the past. I believe they have an app.
Frustrating with just game tracker.
But it looks like we have absorbed their best effort and have begun to turn the table to our favor. It was worrisome early when they started draining 3s.
Second half start: KSU trey, trey, trey, trey. What is this?
Would be nice if we could make a 3...
Freaking terrible offensive performance. This is not okay.
Marty Linssen and Markus Golder have been huge on both ends. Burton has come up big on D as well.
smits & sorolla have combined for just 14 minutes with 8 minutes left in the 2nd half. Big night for linssen
We need to be smarter to not get technicals with 4 minutes left in the game! brutal and unacceptable.
Bigs need to rebound better...Darn it! Keep your heads out there! What is this? This isn't Valpo basketball.
Valpo 65, Kent State 63 with 3:43 left in the 2nd half.
JOE BURTON!!! BAKARI EVELYN!!! TRANSFERS STEPPING UP!!!
Win is a win. Whew!
Any win is a good win! Linssen with his best game, McMillan ate up some minutes, Golder was ballin' out (though not sure about that last layup). 6-0!!
6 up, 0 down...stuff dreams are made of
Great gut check win for these guys, but absolutely stupid play on Burton's part with that T. He bailed us out when it mattered most, but as a RS JR, he has to be smarter. Glad that I was able to listen on my phone for the entire second half.
A live look of me listening to the ending of that game.
A very gritty win. It's actually nice to see this team being able to pull off the win on a cold shooting night (3-15 from 3) with foul trouble against a good Kent State team on a neutral court. The guys found a way to win. We need games like this.
A heck of a performance from Linssen who really stepped up tonight with the other bigs in foul trouble. Another strong game from Golder. It sounds like his lay up ruffled some feather at the end of the game there.
I can't wait for the game tomorrow to see how we react. As of now I am just going to mark this one down as just not being our night. Got in foul trouble early which didn't help at all. That added on to their 18 point advantage from beyond the arc makes an unfortunate situation. A legit double digit win tomorrow against a decent UNCW team would make me feel pretty good though.
Were the KSU threes not contested? They took a wheelbarrow full.
I just listened and watched the live stats. Not pretty on paper.
But Burton and Evelyn are game ready for Purdue & Northwestern due to prior experiences. Tevonn and Max are ready too. Burton is just so smooth.
Have to get by UNCW first. And we thought they were the better of the two opponents. Loyola cleaned up on them while we struggled with Kent.
Joe Burton's 3-pointer sends Valparaiso to 6-0
Paul Oren Times Correspondent
Joe Burton missed his first six shots of the night, including four 3-pointers, but with Friday night's game against Kent State on the line, the Oklahoma State transfer delivered.
Burton connected on a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left and the Crusaders added six more points down the stretch as Valparaiso knocked off the Golden Flashes 77-67 on the first night of the Savannah Invitational.

by James Snyder@morefball Nov 24, 2017, 9:38pm EST
The Kent State Golden Flashes were looking to improve to 4-1 on the season. In their way, the 5-0 Valparaiso Crusaders.
Kent State stayed close most of the first half before Valpo made a run late, building a 32-22 lead with 2:02 left. Adonis De La Rosa scored close while Jaylin Walker hit a three to keep the Golden Flashes in the game. They were only down 34-27 at the intermission.

I'd suggest just buying them at the game tomorrow. There were probably only 200 on hand for the Valpo game. Your $10 ticket will let you sit in just about any row in the house.
It sounded like the buffet would also have excess capacity - you may be able to pay at the door or similar.

I remember that game, as I believe that they were coming off an NCAA appearance, and it was one of the biggest opponents we would have come to the ARC in some time. I believe that it was Blizzard that was their key player at that time?
Edit: Just looked it up, and they did go to the NCAA tourney in 1999-2000, 2001-2002, and 2002-2003 with Blizzard as their star player. They received an NIT bid in 2000-2001, when we played them:

Not sure if you were following on the live stats, but it was wrong three or four times during the game and it was wrong at the end of the game for about five minutes and then it was corrected. I think that's where the wrong score came from.
Whoever was doing the live stats just messed up that last 2 possessions. They originally had Mileek missing a 3 and Kent State making a last second lay-up, before reversing it to the correct plays.

It's not really a tournament because it's not designed to have a clear cut winner. It is designed for like teams to play each other on home and neutral courts. SELA and Samford were put in a lower tier and therefore had to play Valpo at Valpo. Kent State, UNCW, Loyola and Valpo were put in a higher tier and therefore got to play each other on a neutral floor in Savannah, GA. Savannah, GA was picked as a site for this event because they could make money from the fans of the teams that came to Savannah to play. Loyola and Valpo did not play each other in Savannah because they are in the same conference (this conference pairing happened after the field was announced for this event) and so they paired up Valpo to play Kent State and UNCW. Although it would have been interesting if Valpo had played Loyola on a neutral court because both teams seem to be headed towards the top of the MVC as does UNI.

I'm still not sure what they'll use as a tiebreaker if we and Loyola both win again. I assume they would normally declare some kind of "winner". I guess they'll have an all-tournament team too, but there's not a lot of people here to vote.
My previous made-up tie breaking procedure aside, my assumption is very simply they will name Valpo and Loyola co-champs. Both teams get honored, and everyone walks away with hardware and a happy face. Easy peasy.
This would not be the first time this has happened for Valpo. The Indianapolis tournament in Fall 1998 was like this. Valpo won both games and Indiana won both games. There was no award for a champion, if memory serves me correctly.
Note that Valpo was the only team not in a Power 6 conference in that tournament.
Valpo 9-pt. favorites over UNCW
Loyola 5.5 pt. favorites over KSU
In regard to Joe's huge 3-pointer, Matt mentioned in the postgame that he told BE during a timeout prior to look for Joe, who was open from 3 on the previous play where BE drove the lane and missed. Then he told Joe, "You're a shooter. Don't ever put your gun away." The rest is history.

Loyola is clobbering Kent with 1:40 to go.
75 _ 60 final
Appeared that they cruised a bit easier than we did. Now we get to compare how we play against UNCW who LUC beat pretty easily.
Loyola just beat Kent State 75-60

Offense has been just ugly in Savannah... We need to get better.
It sounds like we can't get anything done offensively. They are dominating us on the boards. UNCW is a terrible defensive team. This a lousy offensive thus far.
uncw 26, valpo 19 with 9min left in the 1st
Evelyn has done a nice job getting us back into the game with two big threes. 28-26 Wilmington
And just as I start to feel better we start playing like crap again. Let's get it together Valpo!
Are they allowed to call fouls on Wilmington?
Can someone at the game please tell our guys to stop fouling!? They've been to the foul line 16 times so far. UNCW isn't even shooting the ball well. Let's getting it going!
We are lucky to be down only 4. Just a horrible half of basketball. Hope coach Lottich can light a fire under them and their play improves dramatically.
I can't quite understand it, but somehow this game is tied at the half.
Tied at 35 at the half. Could have been a lot worse. Good work by Golder and Bradford on the final possession. Defense (foul trouble aside) has been solid. Offensively, Evelyn appears to be the only bright spot thus far. Here's to a better second half! Go Valpo!
Burton Walker and Golder 1-12 Wow. Hopefully that corrects a bit and our offense can get going and perform a little better.
The refs seem to be more quick with the whistle on Valpo. it sounded like Coach Lottich was lobbying the refs at the end of the half. 18 FTA to 6 for us!
It sounds like when UNCW isn't going to the foul line they're getting the rest of their points in quick transitions.

That certainly hasn't helped but you can't argue that Valpo has done much to help themselves this half. They need to be better if they're going to put this game out.
Too many second chances...
Great defense by Valpo for a decent stretch, and now the defense has completely disappeared again.
UNCW going on a run. uncw 50, valpo 49 with 11:43 left in the 2nd half.
Now can we do what we didn't do last night and attack the player in foul trouble when he's in?
I get that his scoring numbers have disappointed and he's supposed to be a scorer but if Burton could stop pressing play within himself and trust that the points will come from that (they will) that'd be great.
Three Seahawks with four fouls. Keep attacking!
A nice win, Bakari was awesome!
Much better this half! Good things happen when you attack the rim! Got away with one there. Tevonn steps up and knocks down two more. And then one more. Following a layup by Wilmington Tevonn steps up to the line again and knocks down a pair, Valpo wins 79-70! Successful stint in Savannah has us at 7-0!On to Utah State! Let's beat the Aggies and close out November the right way!Go Valpo! Evelyn was absolutely incredible as was our defense most of the game! Well done!
At first it was all Wilmington, then it was all even and then it was all Evelyn!
I was traveling while the game was on. Does anyone know if and where I could find a replay of this game? Sounds like Bakari had a career game.
Another gritty win when several guys were struggling with their shot. I was saying before this game that Smits has a few good games under his belt, Linssen did well last game, and it was now time for Sorolla to snap out of his funk. He did just that, when it mattered most :).

Sorolla was probably the second best Crusader tonight behind Evelyn. He made several big defensive plays down the stretch.
Does our performance in Savannah serve as a decent barometer of how we compare to Loyola at this point in the season? Loyola had no trouble with UNCW and their win margin vs. Kent was pretty convincing. We had to work harder for our two wins.

How is that possible? What about Loyola? Loyola's Donte Ingram was co-MVP according to the LUC Twitter feed.
I heard they were crowned co-Champions.
Seems like some spinning going on here.

They were down 3 at half to a SWAC team last week. So if you go on that game, no. If you go on this game, yes. It's almost as if these two teams should just play later in the year.
Yeah, it seems destined to happen. ;)
Paul Oren notes that the point spread over the 4 common opponents was +73 for both Loyola and Valpo. Both teams are taking care of business. Every game is its own experience, so it's not a great indicator to look at other scores to figure out what's going to happen.
7-0 looks pretty sweet. I would be disappointed with anything less, but it is no small task to win every game that you are supposed to win. Teams get hot, you can have an off night, other variables can mess with things, etc. That's why I went conservative with my 6-2 prediction. Won't settle for anything less than 8-0 at this point! Go Valpo!
Evelyn shines as Valparaiso remains undefeated
Paul Oren Times Correspondent
Joe Burton's shots weren't falling. Markus Golder's dunks weren't flushing. Valparaiso's offense wasn't functioning.
Leave it to Nebraska transfer Bakari Evelyn to save the day for the still-undefeated Crusaders with a performance for the ages.
Evelyn had a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds as the Crusaders came from behind to beat UNC-Wilmington 79-70 in the finale of the Savannah Invitational on Saturday night.

One must take great caution when considering the use of the associative property of performance.
UNCW beat reporter did a live chat breaking down the UNCW vs Valpo game in facebook video: https://www.facebook.com/StarNewsUNCW/videos/vb.239401229249/10155983250299250/?type=2&theater

-mentions both Valpo and Loyola are postseason teams

On site the awards were very quick and only Valpo was on the floor. They announced Tevonn's award, but not clearly (there was speculation among the fans that it might have been defensive POTT).
Bakari and Valpo were announced as MVP/champs, no co-.

Special request to WVUR? There's no public archive that I know of.
At the game, it was clear that Bakari was having a monster game. And doing a lot of it by himself, scoring wise. It was clear (second half only) that Tevonn and Bakari were getting to the line and converting (probably at least four of Tevonn's were in garbage time). It felt like 8-5 in the first half. At no point did I say "Huh, it feels like we only have a few assists." I've not checked the numbers, but in both games, and maybe it's our first offensive instinct this year, it felt like we were often trying to get to the basket.
The difference between Loyola and Valpo is that this is supposed to be the best Loyola team in 20 or 30 years. Supposed to be a rebuilding year for us. SOS has been weak. I would be happy going .500 the rest of the non-con season. Lots of road tests coming up.
Our SOS or theirs? Or both?

@ Ball St, @Purdue, @Nothwestern, and @ Santa Clara and Riverside. The only home game vs MWC Utah St. Anything between 5-1 and 2-4 is possible. We will soon know how dangerous Lottich and his new team are.
I'd say 6-0 is possible. Neither of our P5 opponents looks unbeatable. In fact, they've both had significant stretches of vulnerability. I wouldn't put it past Valpo to be able to spring an upset or two.

Samford was supposed to be at the top of their conference (injuries), while Kent State and UNCW are coming off NCAA bids. You can't fault the scheduling when we expected these to be 3 solid mid-major games, heading into Purdue, Ball State, and Northwestern. I very much look forward to playing against UNI in a few weeks ;).

We scheduled our toughest Non-Conference opponents during the month of December. Both the non-d1s don't affect the rpi either. We need tune-up games for this team.
Talk to me about the SOS after December 17.

Another slight hit to our SOS was the schedule shift that prevented us from meeting Loyola (now #89) for the championship game. I am already looking forward to both of these matchups.

Eh I don't think we will be beating Purdue, especially in Mackey. Sure they lost two games in Atlantis, but KenPom still has them at 13 and it was played in a ballroom. Only harder place to play would be an air craft carrier. I think we will be able to give Northwestern all they want and come away with a win. But at Purdue you can count me out on

I question how much Valpo will be able to give at Northwestern. The Northwestern game is during final exam week, and I wonder whether that distraction will influence players' availability for practice and preparation as well as their state of mind. (I thought Valpo had a policy of not scheduling games during final exams.)

There's a huge difference between Valpo's schedule between now and then and Purdue's once Valpo plays Utah State we've got nothing left to do but spend the next nine days preparing for Purdue Meanwhile Purdue will have started Conference play and has to worry about Maryland and Northwestern on 12/1 and 12/3 respectively. This means that Purdue won't be turning it's full attention to us until 12/4 leaving them just four days to prepare. We've got twice as much time to study them. That's got to work to our advantage. I'm not saying we'll win but I wouldn't be totally floored if we did
On Northwester: Same deal as Purdue they've got two Conference games AND a game against Chicago State to prepare for between the end of action tomorrow and their game with us as well as a date with the Blue Demons two days after they play us Are you sure we won't catch them looking ahead to their (basically) inter-city rivals from the higher profile conference? I'm telling you these games will be tough and we shouldn't necessarily be expecting to win them but they are much more winnable than a lot of you are letting on.

The Northwestern players have to go to class too and has exams that they must prepare for. Why is it that these things only effect one of the teams playing. We sure do like to come up with excuses for our team not playing well way ahead of their tough games.

I was not comparing the difficulties during final exam week with other teams but with VU game preparation at other times of the season. I believe this is one reason Valpo used to have a policy of not playing any games during final exams. As for Northwestern: no, they will not be going to class or taking exams. They will be on winter break with their fall semester (including final exams) finished a week before the game with Valpo takes place.
