Utah St sits at 4-3 (RPI 196) with no notable wins and losses at #224 Weber St, at #73 Gonzaga, and at #72 Portland St.

I haven't watched a second of their play and know nothing about them. Despite my ignorance or maybe because of it I am expecting a home win. Anybody want to challenge my thinking?   ::)

You mean you haven't watched every second of film on Utah State that has ever existed in their history? You need to find a way to break the space time continuum to make an informed decision. I expected better of you man  ;)

When referring to states, you probably shouldn't include the District of Columbia.   :twocents:

They might have a deeper bench than some. Merrill getting 34 MPG eats up a lot of minutes, but they seem to get 10 guys legitimate minutes, and two others have had 10 minutes on at least one occasion.

I don't know if anybody in the country has 12 guys _averaging_ more than 10 MPG per game like we do (the suspensions help with that), or a leader with as few as Tevonn's 26.1 MPG.

I'm not too thrilled when it takes 30 points from our point guard to win.  Hopefully the friendly confines of the ARC will spur some good shooting by the guys who were quiet in Savannah!

I hate to say it, but it is a very busy week, academically, on campus! Just back from a week/nine days off for Thanksgiving. This is the last week for mid-term exams. And just these two weeks of classes left before finals.

Back in my day, going to a basketball game and a trip to Duffy's afterwards usually improved my mid-term performance.

Mid-term exams after Thanksgiving?

If students don't go to a game like this, I would suggest that the athletic department might want to ask why they don't go to the game. We all have our theories, but the truth may be something totally different.

Mid-term in the sense of "third exam in a course that's going to give three exams and a final". It's a little late, but it may be better than cramming more into the week before Thanksgiving.

Other quality universities have "midterms" but never seem to lack students at their games. I grow tired of excuses for absence of student support, especially when offered in advance of the game.

Yeah, I am still ticked about the first MVC selection, cuz we "coudah been a contendah" right out of the blocks but that's not LUC's problem — that's a MVC skeleton in the closet.

I remember this week not to long ago. Brutal next couple weeks for students. It always felt like all my professors would crammed everything for during the last couple weeks. But it also could have been the fact that I while I was on break I would never pick up my textbooks again till that last weekend  ::).

These kids will miss being able to go to all basketball games. Enjoy it while you have the opportunity because you'll miss it when you're an alum.

Fingers crossed we have a good student turnout. It's the last home game for a while and it should be a good one. Next home game after this one is on NEW YEARS EVE DAY 12/31!

Long road trip coming to an end for Aggies
By Shawn Harrison sports editor

"When any team that has a defensive field goal percentage (34.6) like they do, as well as defends the 3-point line (24.5 percent) and rebounds (+11 per game), that gets your attention," Duryea said. "They are a very good team. They play a fast, up tempo style which is how they score. They also have a 7-footer on the floor all the time."

Going to a basketball game for a 2-3 hour period should be a nice respite from exams.  I never struggled to get all homework and studying completed, while attending basketball games and many baseball practices each week during the Fall.  These excuses are ridiculous...

This game shouldn't as close at is. 34-31 Valpo up.

Bad 1st half for Valpo (a few good moments) but credit Utah State for hitting their 3s. We need to defend the 3 point line better get those long rebounds to prevent 2nd chance points.

We're letting them hang around.

Lots of bad passing today and I'm still scratching my head about Hazen. We've been winning with him still trying to find himself, but he'd better get over the hump soon.

1.  Walker is one of the 5 best players in the league.  Without Question.

2. Burton seems lazy on both offense and defense?   Lazy or hurt?

3. We are playing really bad IMO.   Really sloppy.

Solid win over a Mountain West opponent tonight. Made the plays when it mattered. Great games from Tevonn and Jaume, clutch game-salting FTs from Evelyn. I agree that we missed some opportunities to put the game away, but you had told me an 8-0 start with all the new players, man, I'd be happy. This team is deep with talent.

Let's go get Purdue.

Typical slow start.  Not so typical quick finish.  Worry about teams that can shoot the three and get back in a game toward the end.

Where did Linnsen go?  I liked his attitude in the first half.  He plays with intensity.

Well what did I enjoy tonight?  I enjoyed that we won.  I appreciated the play of Walker and Sorolla (and Marty!).  Otherwise I think a week of practice with coach Lottich will be very much needed for our guys.

We all conceded to growing pains this year, I for one, am glad we can experience those pains and continue to win games.  No moral victories for us thus far, only the real ones!

Valpo and Duke at 8-0, not too shabby for my Alma Maters  ;D.

Starting to see shades of 2016 Vashil in Sorolla's defense!

Otherwise, we've got to clean up the turnovers and defensive rebounding as a team. A win with room to improve.

I almost never give the other team credit (not in my nature), but I do have to say for a team with less size, bulk and depth, they matched blow for blow and played with amazing intensity right to the final gun. To their credit we were never able to impose our will late in the game like some of our other opponents. That said, any team that jacks up 33 3's in 40 minutes at the D-1 level never deserves to win that game.

05:14 25-26 BRADFORD,MICAH made free throw

and we never trailed after that.... his only point of the game.

That ref kept an eagle eye on Golder from the time of the foul until he t'd him up.  Of course Golder was upset, and was "jawing" (but not directly at the ref) , giving the ref his "justification" for the T. I guess he didn't like being called out for making a lousey call.

Any win is a good win but this was not a great performance from us. Too many mistakes that we can't get away with against teams like Purdue, Northwestern and Ball State.

I grade this performance as a C+/B-. If Tevonn and Sorolla didn't have big nights we'd lose this game. Lazy & terrible passes at times tonight. Overall strong defense but the offense struggled all night to find its rhythm. If we played this way against Purdue we'd get run out of the gym. We need more focus.

I'm happy we're 8-0 but we are better then what we showed tonight.

I am glad we are winning without Burton but his limited contributions are now starting to worry me. Is he saving his best for the Boilermakers?

Golder has certainly got the fire but sooner or later it will earn him an ejection. I hope it doesn't happen in the next 3 games.

Will more than 10 play at Purdue?

I was on a long conference call tonight and only could watch the "live stats" during the game.

It was pretty brutal watching all the "missed 3 pointer" messages.   The number jumped off the screen for Tevonn and Sorolla.

The low number popped out for Burton and Smits.  I suspect Burton is hurt because he has been used so sparingly.  He turned it on a couple times late in the game, but I'm puzzled.  What happened to Smits?  Low minutes tonight.

How many students in the student section?  Missed seeing that too.

Smits's lack of minutes were in conjunction with how well Sorolla played. Tough to take Sorolla out when he's completely controlling the paint on both sides of the court.

The positive about being a deep team is you don't have to worry about that because there are others capable of stepping up. The negative about being a deep team is if a player doesn't have a good start to his game, his minutes are likely going down and his chance to find a rhythm is gone. If someone is out playing you for the night, you aren't going to see the court very often. Plain and simple.

What is the root cause of the inconsistency for several of our players?

Is it a talent thing or is it because we are playing 12 guys and several guys need more playing time to get into a rhythm?

My biggest complaint on Burton is effort.  He seems to not be playing very aggressively at all, especially on his cuts off the ball to get open.  Gotta work hard to get open.   He was touted as more than just a spot up shooter, correct?

Kiser is simply out working him right now.

We will need to shoot better from 3 point.

Last night, Tevon was the only one to hit from 3 point.  We shot 15%  :'(

Against UNC Wilmington we shot well at 40% from 3 point.  However, we only attempted 12 3's and it was only 12% at halftime.

Against Kent St. we shot 20%  :'(

Must get better at 3 in order to spread the court and open driving lanes for our athletes.  Also more post room for our 7 footers.

Parker has a total of 106 minutes played through all games according to the stat sheet on the valpo basketball website and only 16 points and 10 turnovers.  Certainly hope he changes it around.  He looks to have the physical capabilities.  I didn't follow him much in high school.  Was he a big scorer?

Solid turnout especially for finals coming up. It kind of makes me sad looking at the student section the last few years. I honestly don't know what happened. Valpo Admissions is getting the intellectual types but we need to start admitting the intellectual types that like basketball. I'm not too far removed from my college days and I remember the students section being more crazy. Literally 2 years ago the swim team was showing up in speedos to games. The student section needs a little bit more of that. V-Rex is always mr. reliable and a we have an outstanding group of hardcore students that get to every home but there can could be more. I don't want to be a downer after a good crowd especially for a coming up on Finals weak but if I were in the Athletics Department I'd be taking a deep look at why the student section has been shrinking in recent years.

But I want to give credit to the @happeninghoops crew who have been handling the social media on the @Valparaizone twitter account. They've been very active and I do think they're efforts have made a difference this season. I know they've been trying to rejuvenate the student section.

I think it's just a "student/fan culture" that needs to be built and sustained from year to year. When I went to school it was fun because the student section was more packed. The band was going strong. Maybe it's easy to lose that or maybe its cyclical with certain classes. I'd honestly try and reach out to one of the marketing classes in the business school and make this a fun class project or something.

Also the incoming student need to be indoctrinated at the beginning of every year to the Valpo Basketball fanbase. Bring them down to the ARC and teach them the cheers. Introduce them to the basketball team and coaches.

VU2014 - I agree with the sentiment and many thoughts in your post. I think having marketing classes do a project regarding how to get greater attendance and enthusiasm is a great idea, and might yield important insights that many (including al of us on this site) might not consider.

I do have to ask, though, what admissions methodology you would apply to find new students who are intellectual types that like basketball? (smile)

Golder's "T" was definitely soft. Have seen guys get away with a lot more after an obvious blown call like that. That said, he probably has to rein it in for a while, just to avoid getting an undeserved rep.

I understood his frustration, though - fouls were 10-3 in favor of USU at the time, with two completely different standards of contact on each end for the 2nd half until this point. I'm sure the fact that Markus had just been knocked to the floor on a drive on the other end with no call led to his reaction, too.

As a Junior on a good team with his brother Brachen, Parker averaged 15.8 PPG and 6.6 RPG. Last year with a new coach and being the only returning starter playing the 5 (defenses collapsed on him) he had a rough go of it to start the season and improved as it went on, ending the season averaging 16.29 PPG and 7.3 RPG.  I still expect Parker to contribute more as the season goes on and he gains more confidence.

Valpo shot 2-13 from 3, committed some bonehead turnovers down the stretch, missed some insanely easy rebounds, had a technical foul in the 2nd half, and still won by 7, and really, the game wasn't in doubt in the final 10 minutes (win probability stayed above 75%). It's amazing how much expectations have shifted since the start of the year. We're sitting at 8-0, the average MOV is 25.3, and there's been 2 games in single digits (and those ended up wins by 3 possessions).

I think I'm more encouraged by them winning after played pretty bad basketball last night. It's critical Valpo avoids bad losses in their OOC portion. Every year Valpo has had one of those gut punch losses, like Ball State in the NIT year, Missouri the year before that, and Santa Clara last year. If Valpo can avoid the bad losses, they'll be in great shape come seeding time, and that'll really help attract better opponents in the future looking for RPI boosts.

The band has been over taxed the past few years. The band right now is mostly STEM majors and/or members of Christ college, all of which are very time consuming. On top of that they play for all home volleyball, football, and m and w basketball, along with rehearsals and events like the popcorn parade sprinkled in. Add all of this together you are asking volunteers to commit about the same amount of time as a group of athletes that are receiving scholarships for their time. Midway through football season there is a huge drop out rate among the freshmen because the time commitment coupled with the only reward being a part of the NCAA tournament band (if the team makes it) and they don't see the point of staying. Also they have to sit through women's basketball and, until this season, football too which is pretty much a morale killer

I hadn't thought before of needing to play at the Womens' games and volleyball too.  That sounds only fair on the surface.  But boy it does double and triple the student time spent. That seems like a very valid point.

I wonder if that is policy at other universities.  Does anyone know if that is a Title IX or is self-imposed by Valpo?

Maybe there could be a rotation and get a larger band rather than spreading these kids so thin.

I too didn't realize the Pep Band appeared at so many events.  VUCPM, you've struck on a line of thinking that has been brought up before, but your more detailed explanation has added a ton of weight to the arguement that the Pep Band (we gave  up on a marching band a long time ago) needs to be underwritten by some sort of student financial aid (or academic credit) and the appointment of a paid band coach/director (aren't the cheerleaders and dancers coached?). It goes without saying (but I will say it anyway) that a really good, creative, energetic and fairly large Pep Band can whip the house into a frenzie. This has got to be a priority initiative in the "fan experience" category for the Athletic Department.

I agree that it looks like Joe lacks effort at times.  Marty is fun to watch and really aggressive.  Wouldn't mind seeing him get more minutes.

Parker has a total of 106 minutes played through all games according to the stat sheet on the valpo basketball website and only 16 points and 10 turnovers.  Certainly hope he changes it around.  He looks to have the physical capabilities.  I didn't follow him much in high school.  Was he a big scorer?

He was THE scorer on a terrible team.  He also was playing out of position at the 5 as I recall as he was also the tallest kid.

Parker has made some great moves around the basket. He just doesn't seem to have that finishing touch to get the ball to go down.

I agree. Once he adds a couple of Jubril herky-jerky ball fakes to his repertoire, the points will come.

Looked to me like an obvious foul. Matt needs to get Marcus under full control or my ejection prediction will come sooner rather than later.

It would be nice to see more production from Parker. He sometimes looks frantic when he looks to score. It looks like he also rushes his shot mechanics to my admittedly untrained eyes. He definitely has the physical skills but he needs to let the game come to him. He looks like a freshman out there.

I actually think Parker is quicker and has more bounce then Jubril had but Jubril was more college ready then Parker. Jubril was fundamentals guy and that's why Bryce trusted him so much in his freshman/sophomore years. On 'Union Street Hoops' Paul mentioned that he has seen him drain 3's in practice and shoot around. It's good to hear. You literally see the potential in Parker but he's adjusting to the speed of the college game which is expected.

I could see Coach wanting to keep him confident by leaving him in the Starting lineup, sort of the way he did with Micah Bradford at times last season.

I suspect Columbia City (Hazeen's HS) played competition that wasn't as tough as Jubril's opponents in high school.  But I could be wrong.

You are 100% correct. Indiana is a great basketball state but the Chicago Public League is arguably the most competitive High School basketball in the country.

Jubril was not a CPL guy. He played at Andrew HS in Tinley Park, a southwest suburb of Chicago. Not positive what AAU team he played with.

Maybe Golder has been a hot head since grade school and for him to change could be difficult. Maybe the reason he feels so much love from his coaches, teammates and Valpo staff is because he never experienced that before and it will take him a while to curb his old ways and become a much better team player who doesn't get incensed by the refs and will learn how to keep a cooler head over time.
