I think there is no doubt Ryan is NBA caliber but it will come down to finding the right situation and fit. Fingers crossed it all works out for Ryan.

Let's hope so! A truly nice guy and a proven star in Europe. It would be fun to see Alec and Rowdy guarding each other!
He deserves it.
Rooting hard for him. Hope he makes it. Seems my speculation that he might end up in Summer League in the where are they now thread may not have been too far off.
Rowdy's skill set is definitely in demand in the current NBA, as well.
He can set the transition to the Greek Freak.
Best part about that list of teams is that it's either a team where he can play a lot and help establish a winning culture (Brooklyn) or hungry young playoff teams where his intangibles and skillset will be great fits. I'm sure we're all rooting for Milwaukee to sign him if any preference exists but just seeing him in the NBA would be really cool and well-deserved.
Nice kid, and a solid player on a top tier Euroleague team. I don't think he has a great chance of getting on an NBA team. He'll be 28 in August and although you can never say never, that's not usually the age in which guys make the move.
He'll really have to show out in the Summer League (which is usually a really hard place to showcase yourself if you aren't a guard that creates his own looks since 95% of the guys out there aren't looking to pass the ball) in order to make the jump in my opinion. This doesn't mean I don't think he could play in the NBA, I just don't know how legitimate of a chance he'll get.
Worst-case scenario though, he doesn't make it and continues to be paid well on his Euroleague team and gets more run with the Aussie National team, which is still better than most college basketball players wind up.

While I understand your points, I think that the thing that seems to be different now is Ryan's three point shooting. He was over 50% for the Eurocup season. If he comes in and shows that level of shooting in workouts and summer league games, he certainly has a chance. I don't think anyone would question his effort or character and his other skills are solid for a two or a three on an NBA roster.

I'm not sure people are disqualified based on age. I think if they want a shooter he'll make a squad. Look, Kyle Korver isn't 27, he is 37 and making $5.239 million. He is the same height and shot 43% from the 3. Ryan has shot 44.3% on averaged over his Euro career. I think the Cavs were wishing Ryan was on their team instead of Kyle!

People aren't disqualified on age, which is why I said "you can never say never". Normally, guys don't make the jump after 6 years of pro basketball after college outside the US, but it does happen on occasion. Andre Ingram was a 32 year old that got called up from the G League this past year by the Lakers, which was the first time he'd ever been in the NBA. Mike James was a 27 year old rookie point guard for the Suns last year.
Broekhoff shot from a 3 point line that's over a foot and a half (20 inches officially) shorter than the NBA's. It's not a lot, but it does make a difference. I'm not saying he couldn't prove to be a good 3 point shooter in the NBA, but to say that Cleveland would rather have Broekhoff than Korver, who is regarded as one of the best 3 point shooters in the NBA history https://www.nba.com/magic/ranking-3-point-shooters-history-1-20180219 seems like a reach to me.
I'm not trying to disparage his skills, though it may seem like it. I do think he could make it if he shoots it well and shows he can defend his position in workouts and summer league. I'm just saying that lots of guys (both college and pros), who have enough skill to make it in some capacity at the NBA level get workouts and interviews with NBA squads, and aren't necessarily given a legitimate chance to prove themselves. Hopefully he is.
First off as a Pacer fan, I hate Kyle Korver.
Ryan's key is picking (if possible) the right camp to go to, much easier said than done. Then shoot so well they can't get rid of him. One of many problems is that NBA teams many times go to camp with 14-15 guys on guaranteed contracts making openings tight.
Plenty of people debut in the NBA past 27. There are a lot of folks that earn their way by playing overseas, as Rowdy has done. The Mavs big Center from Tunisia debuted at 29 or 30, and Joe Ingles, another Australian, debuted at 27. Don't count him out.
I'm at the Washington airport (DCA) and can confirm Ryan just tried out with the Wizards. Very nice guy, told him we all are rooting for him.
Said Wizards workout went quite well and has two more lined up. Believe he said one was the Nets, was in a rush to catch a flight so don't quote me.

Nice to "see" you again, Koala! Hope things are going well. Memories of Ryan never fade. BTW I would love to see Ryan join the Valpo coaching staff when his playing days are over.
wh
Greek Freak and Broekhoff together, I would die.
I haven't been far away, I still keep an eye on the team and read the board every now and then.
You know what if Ryan makes an NBA team it means we can visit the USA more and a visit to Valpo will be on the cards to catch up with all of our Valpo friends, can't wait.
WH, Ryan would make a fantastic coach, I like your thinking

Great article!
The statistical comparison between Broekhoff and Joe Ingles in that article is incredible. Broekhoff's numbers blow Ingles's out of the water. This makes me very optimistic about Ryan's chances to make the league. I hope he makes it.
Another positive article comparing Joe to Ryan. This week he visits 3 NBA teams including Milwaukee.

Sure looks promising. BTW, don't ya like the way Brits and Aussies write?
I hope being on the market doesn't impact Broekhoff's FA.

Unfortunately for McDermott there's this thing called defense that needs to be factored in when evaluating players. Broekhoff can play it McDermott can't. Broekhoff is also a better and more willing passer. Broekhoff is a much better fit for the modern NBA than McDermott. Broekhoff will be fine.
I vote Rowdy to my Mavs! No to McD!
And I vote Rowdie to the Bucks. MKE needs him. Actually, I just want to see him play and the 90 minute drive is worth it.

He'll be cheap so I can see a team with cap trouble signing him to fill a shooting void.
I always thought he'd fit better on a contender anyway. Maybe some team we haven't heard connected to him yet will sign him.

I'm glad Rowdy was in the states working out for NBA teams, because he missed out on a pretty bad brawl between the Australian and Filipino national teams:

I know that the NBA is the holy grail for basketball players. Fact of life.
But NBA basketball, IMO, is a bastardized version of pure basketball as it was originally conceived. For some reason, I believe the rest of the world still stays true(er) to the original game. If Rowdie doesn't get the NBA offer we all hope he will, he will still play on a large stage that will present his great talents. And he may benefit more emotionally, psychologically and financially from being a major player in a Euro league than being a NBA role player.
Whatever, I just want the best for this kid.
Welcome to the NBA! Rowdy signs with Dallas Mavericks!

Great news! Congratulations to Rowdy.
The last time I saw Rowdy play in-person (non-video), he lit up Butler for 19 pts and 16 rbs in the HL tourney @$$ whipping we gave them. If he gets even 1/3 of the points and 1/5 of rebounds in this upcoming season, I will chalk that up to a good first year in the NBA :)

That Todd Ickow call of the Broekhoff buzzer-beater brings back so many great memories. Probably the best live sporting event I've ever attended. Such a special moment! Proud of Rowdy getting to realize his dreams!
What an amazing success story! So happy for Ryan and his entire family!
Beyond thrilled for him! Couldn't have happened to a better guy! May he parlay this into a nice long career as Ingles and Dellavedova before him have done! Now if Ryan could just put a good word in for Alec, perhaps we'd finally get to see how fantastic these two would have been had they played together. Regardless, this alum is proud and pleased with this news tonight! Go Valpo!
There was nobody friendlier or more positive than Rowdy whenever I interacted with him. What great representatives of Valpo he and Alec would be together in the NBA. Add Bryce, and we can be proud Valparaiso has produced such individuals of high quality character to showcase in the brightest of basketball spotlights. My only hope is that we can watch Rowdy with #45 seen on his Valpo jersey in my photo, especially since I notice that number is not taken by anyone currently on the Mavericks roster. I always wished to witness him wearing that number in the NBA!

Spectacular news for Rowdy! I can remember watching the first video of Ryan as a recruit and some people complaining about his release point... well I guess he proved them all wrong!

Congrats Ryan and Koala!!
That video of Ryan's buzzer beater is the best. Better than ESPN's. I spoke to the guy who took this video. He was leaving early to get out ahead of the crowd and stopped and took the video just in case this happened. Thats why he said "he did it!" in the video He wanted to get the fans reaction which is cool to see.

From Mavs web site:
Owner Mark Cuban and coach Rick Carlisle said the Mavs have agreed on a contract with Australian guard/forward Ryan Broekhoff. The 6-7 player was an honorable mention All-American and the Horizon League Player of the year while playing for Valparaiso in 2012. Broekhoff, now 27 years old, played for Valparaiso from 2009-'13, but went drafted. He also made the All-EuroCup First Team in 2015 while playing for Lokomotiv Kuban. "He's the best shooter in Europe," Cuban said. "He played at Valparaiso, the alma mater of Shawn Marion, and was a knock down shooter there. His game has improved, he's a good rebounder for his position, he's 6-7 with a 6-10 wingspan, so he knows now to play." Carlisle said of Broekhoff: "He's a shooter and a tough kid who had a great year this year in Europe. We like him as a shooter and a guy that can space the floor.".

That's embarrassing for Cuban and a huge slight to Valpo to think it's the same place as non-D1 Vincennes. That should be bulletin board material for our players going forward.

It's a simple mistake. There doesn't appear to be any malice.
Rowdy in latest interview: "Valpo was an amazing place for me to grow not only as a basketball player, but as a man. It allowed me time to develop and improve for all four years. It helped shape me into who I am today and I am forever grateful for the opportunity." https://apple.news/A1VInrQB6TPSpM3sumr_eXQ (https://apple.news/A1VInrQB6TPSpM3sumr_eXQ)
As Valpo fans have all known for awhile, Rowdy certainly is a class act!!! I am so happy for him and his family for his hard work leading to this NBA opportunity, and proud of Rowdy for the way he represents himself as well as Valpo! What a great spokesman he makes for Valpo!!

I hate to compare the two in this manner, but Rowdy always seems to be much more appreciative of his time at Valpo, versus how Alec appears. As soon as he graduated, Alec was instantly making comments around, 'I wish those guys luck,' and almost distancing himself from Valpo, whereas Rowdy always makes comments about his experience at the school.

I think there just has been more time for Rowdy be reflective then there has been for Alec. Ryan is further along in his career. AP was immediately thrown into a career altering rehab for his stress fracture during his senior year and then prepping for the NBA. Life has probably been moving 100mph to him so he doesn't have time to be reflective. I'm sure he probably has some fond memories of his time at Valpo.
Peters' decision not to follow Bryce to Vanderbilt should tell you all you need to know about what he thinks of Valpo and the time he spent here.

I'd agree AP's world is going 100 mph right now, I wouldn't read into his verbiage as a slight. He is an outstanding young man and he currently has no thoughts for yesterday since he is fighting every day to keep relevant in the NBA.
Not sure this comparison quite fits, but think back to how we all thought of our high school after we went off to the bigger world of college. Our old high school world wasn't quite as cool (for several years). AP is now in the bigger world of the NBA so it's doubtful he has had time to reflect. In my first 5-years out of college I had very little thought to VU. It wasn't until I found myself established in career and community that I brought my attention back to Valpo (sports and other). I think AP is in the early stages of that adjustment combined with the fact that he is living in a dream this last year.
Ryan has had 5-years to reflect on the great days at VU and his path to the NBA has been 5-years less direct than AP. Maybe in the long haul Broekhoff will have a better appreciation for his years at Valpo.

I think what 2014, 1314 and Fieldgoodie05 said are spot on with Alec. Him staying with his team says all we need to know where Valpo sits in his heart and the fact that they gave him a chance. I encountered him a few times after games and once on campus and he was truly a humble, respectful kid. I will forever be one of his biggest fans. Keep in mind he's a little younger than Ryan and like as has been said, hasn't had the time to truly reflect like Ryan had.
What I think the focus should be on is that in within the last 5years Valpo has generated 2 NBA players. That's a recruiting tool that is severely underrated as most kids have the novel notion that they are going to play in the NBA someday. I know this staff and their integrity will not sell a kid on that but will, promise them development. Outside of Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA and a few other P6 schools how many others schools can say that with respect to NBA players on their roster. While unfortunate, it's what kids want to hear. And Valpo has 2 to their credit. Heck, there are some P5 schools that don't have a single "player" on an NBA roster. And the fact remains, the schools I mentioned earlier have nothing but one and dones in those ranks. Valpo isn't getting one and dones but getting kids that they have a track record of developing and offering them a possible opportunity at greener pastures carries weight. See Javon Freeman Liberty. I believe more of him are coming in the future years. Valpo is a true sleeping giant. Now if we could do something about the facilities....
What he meant to say:
Q: What do you know about Texas?
A: GREATEST STATE IN THE USA, HANDS-DOWN ;).
I look forward to coming to a few games/hopefully meet him some day, and I know that our fans will love the pure grit that he plays with. Nothing will win over a Texan more than desire and heart to pull through in any situation, and Rowdy oozes that on an every day basis.
Kind of funny, and ironic, how Rowdy is in the NBA in 2018 and Ray Jr is not.
TX, go ahead and say it.....
May allow for Rowdy to play a bigger role with the Mavs next season.

If he gets Max Kleber minutes, he will have a shot to do more. Max played in many games at the start of the season, but not many minutes. He earned more minutes as the season went along, and averaged 16.8 mpg.
Welcome back to the States and to the NBA! Happy Birthday and best of luck Rowdy! Glad to see him working hard already. I have a feeling he's going to do well.

True credit goes to VU2014. I saw it in his retweets and he deserves a hat tip. I just brought it to the board. (sorry for not crediting him in the original post.)
Broekhoff scores 6 points on 2-4 from 3-point range and gets 3 rebounds plus 2 assists and 0 turnovers in 18 minutes of play during his first exhibition game with the Mavs.

If he can consistently do that, he'll have a nice career in the NBA.
Watched the whole game, and was impressed with how easily Rowdy fits into the NBA on both offense and defense. He definitely belongs, and is not a liability on D, so he should have a nice NBA career.
...and help Valpo recruiting in the process. Two former Crusaders in the NBA in the past year. One drafted, one undrafted. How many mids can say that? In fact, how many Majors can say that?
Full Highlights, they were playinga team from the CBA, but still solid action for Ryan!

I really hope that Broekhoff becomes the next Joe Ingles or better. Now THAT would help recruiting.
The box score wasn't flashy, but Rowdy played for 16 minutes this morning in a pre-season game against Philadelphia.
Box Score:

After reading some Dallas fans' opinions on the game, everyone seemed impressed by his stroke and were surprised at how scrappy a rebounder he his. Hopefully the beginning of much more to come this season!
Nine points in 15 minutes this morning. We all know the effort will always be there with Ryan, but whether he makes it or not is going to come down to hitting threes. 5-10 so far in three exhibition games - so he has probably only helped himself with his shooting.
He's already cemented himself a rotation role. It is just a matter of whether he is in the top 10, or the top 13-14 to see playing time.
When is said 'makes it', I meant that he not only was on the active roster to start the season, but also that he was in the regular rotation throughout the season.

You wouldn't know this, as you probably aren't a Mavs fan, but we typically have a rotation of 13-14 players each game. Therefore, my comment holds true, in that he is already in the rotation, not just active roster.

I very much agree that he is going to be a 10-15 mpg guy at the start of the season, and can earn more time based on performance during those minutes.

So the Mavs have a rotation which is greater in number than a given active roster for a game? Either that or you don't understand what "rotation" means in basketball parlance.
The real answer is a regular rotation of 3-4 guys beyond the starters who play significant minutes with maybe one or two other players having a lesser role but consistently. The number rarely gets to 10 total beyond a significant number of blowouts.
Broekhoff shoots well he'll play. If not he won't. I don't think his calling card his hidden to anyone.

It sounds like you don't know your rules, not I:
A team may have a maximum of 15 players on its active roster, and at least eight active players must suit up for every game. Any remaining players are placed in the Inactive List, and cannot play in games.[5][6] Teams may have a maximum of two players on the Inactive List; this can drop to zero for up to two weeks at a time, and additional, temporary inactive positions may be added with league approval in hardship cases. The Inactive List can change up to 60 minutes before opening tip by informing the official scorer of the game. A player can be inactive for as little as one game.[6] Players sent to the NBA Development League will continue to count on a team's inactive list.[7][8] While individual teams must carry a minimum of 13 (12 active plus one inactive) players, the NBA guarantees a league-wide average of at least 14 players per team. The league is surcharged if they do not meet the average.[6]
I am a Mavs fan. It is often that we use anywhere between 10-14 players in a given game over the last few years. Even during those games when we only play 10, it is a different 10, based on matchup. Often times, we play 10-12. Maxi Kleber's minutes/games from last year, are a good example of how Rowdy will start this season. He will probably be in the top 10-11 guys, and get around 10 mpg. If he does well, that increases. If he does not do well, he falls to the lower part of the rotation, and plays in 1/3 of the games. Some examples of games that were mid-year, and not blowouts:

A team cannot play 14 players in a game because 14 players cannot be active for a given game.
A rotation is not every player who plays in every game. A rotation is a collection of players who play a somewhat defined number of significant minutes in a game i.e. 10 or more. This does not include a 4 or 5 minute appearance by players at the end of the bench.
Back to the point at hand for which nothing is earthshattering news. If Broekhoff shoots well he'll be part of the rotation. If he doesn't he'll be one of the 4 or 5 minute guys at best.

It was as interpersonal "skill-ish" as deserved.
Again, the Mavs have a rotation of 10-12. You can try and twist it however you want, but that is how Carlisle has always been with the Mavs. You are still part of the rotation, if you get a consistent amount of minutes each game, which folks in the 10-12 range do for the Mavs, as evidenced by the small sampling of competitive games that I provided. There are players who are considered #13 and #14 on the Mavs, who still get a decent run of play each season, and Carlisle would himself say that they are part of his rotation.
Who knew that I should be coming to you for sports definitions all of this time? Maybe I should ask you about baseball, as well. Care to teach me some verbiage that you prefer on that side? I only played in college, but maybe you can teach me something ;).

The only one doing any twisting is you. You had a rotation of 14 which is more than can dress. You either don't understand what a rotation is in basketball parlance or were just informed of the number of players eligible to play in an NBA game. However you're a big Mavs fan so you know more than the rest of us.
Carry on.
Just want to point out that with 2:00 minutes left in the first quarter, we have already played 10 guys. Don't be butt hurt, big guy. Rowdy with his first career NBA 3 already, on his second try of the same possession.
Also, yes, unless someone is a Mavs fan, they would have no idea that we consistently play 10-12 each game.
10 minutes left in the second quarter, and we are up to 11 players...who would have thought?
Ryan took his first three from the corner and missed. Mavs got the offensive rebound and kicked it back to him deep in the corner....swish. Missed one other three in the first half. Three total minutes and three points.

Here was the problem your first comment said 13-14 which as was pointed out is impossible because 13 is the max. You compounded it by adding a bunch of box scores where only 13 were listed and I am not sure any of those played 13. Had you started with the 10-12 comment all would have been fine.
The Mavs are terrible. He, and everyone else, should get plenty of action to prove themselves.
I was thinking the same when I saw they lost pretty bad to the Suns.

Yes, I get this, but you also have to look at my comment that we have a rotation of 13-14 players for each game. If you look at last night's game, Salah Mejri did not play, but he will get plenty of action. Carlisle is a bit odd, in that he uses 13-14 players fairly consistently throughout the season, with the last 2-3 guys playing in 1/2 to 2/3 of the games. He would consider that part of his rotation, regardless of only 13 being allowed to 'dress.' He doesn't view it as only having a rotation of 8 or 9 guys as JD24 was trying to define a rotation, but instead matches his team to whomever he is playing. Carlisle is a huge data analytics guy.
It escalated when JD24 tried to be like some on here, where grammar or spelling is corrected, but in this case, he was the sports verbiage police. My comment about most not knowing how the Mavs operate was a sincere comment, meant without any negativity, and he took it to a place that it didn't need to go.
Yes, we are bad, but I believe that we will be fighting for the 7th or 8th playoff spot by year-end.

JD24 was brash and rude on that subject. It would have gotten me defensive as well, in fact it caused me to interject unnecessarily too. That type of attitude adds no value to a forum that genuinely is here to sound off ideas and contribute thoughts. I think he is a good contributor generally in the football thread, so I am not sure what got him miffed at that time.
I'd suggest that we move on because your points are well taken. The Mavs are going to give their players excellent chances during regular season games to earn a bigger role. And I'm glad to hear a Mavs fan inform us as to their MO. Previously I had thought that Peters was going to get a real shot at minutes with Phoenix because they too were pretty underwhelming heading into the season. I suppose what we are missing is the practices in where players like AP might have been less than dominant. It's likely that AP lost his chances during game simulation / practices, because he didn't really seem to get strong enough minutes to be a "1-and-done" in the NBA as he was this go-round.

Ignoring your comments from now on...moving on.
Mavs beat T-wolves, with Rowdy only playing early first quarter minutes again (4 minutes), but 1/3 for 3 points again. It seems like Carlisle is testing him early to see if he has a hot hand. If he doesn't, he sits. I will be interested to see if he hits 2 of 3 early, how it affects his playing time.

I wonder if Rowdy isn't like Alec in that they both play better the more minutes they play e.g. once Alec got significant minutes in his last game for the Suns he put up 30+. I seem to recall that both seemed to like to let the game come to them, playing better later in games than in their first minutes. If so that's gonna make it hard to impress enough early to get the minutes that he needs to show what he can do. Lot of pressure knowing if you don't hit your first two shots you'll be on the bench.
I started to go through and count all the words spelled incorrectly in this thread but then thought maybe that wouldn't be appreciated........... ;)

Looks like Rowdy has appeared in 5 of 9 games so far for the Mavs. 3 minute average for those games he appeared in.
Carlisle has tested him early in those games to see if he has a hot hand. Since he hasn't, he doesn't play after that spurt. He is going to have to take advantage of any minimal action from here on out, barring any injuries, in order to get back in Carlisle's rotation.
Is it possible that Ryan has been used minimally so he can learn the pace of the NBA game, since European leagues play a much slower game? That could be a huge mindset thing that Ryan is being used slowly and sparingly for, especially early in the season.
Just a quick note to alert everyone that Dallas will be visiting the Bulls Monday evening at 7 p.m. Let's hope Rowdy gets playing time.

Great update. Always interested in tracking Ryan. He will be an incredible addition to the Valpo staff when his playing days are over.
Ryan had a nice game last night 5 pts, 2 Rebs. He will quickly head up the charts of Valpo NBA scoring leaders. From a post from April at the end of Alec's rookie year:
"Congrats Alec.
With that 36, Alec finished with 82 pts for his rookie year. Bryce had 118 his rookie year. Bryce had 1081 for his NBA career. Will Alec be the all-time leading scorer from Valpo before his NBA career finishes? He's already moved into 5th place!
Bryce 1081 (118 rookie year)
John Janish 734
Milt Schoon 616
Bob Dille 296
Alec Peters 82
Don Bielke 14
Ryan Broekhoff 11 (through 7 games)
Question--in what game will Ryan tie Alec? And, can he catch Bryce's rookie year mark of 118

Both he and Alec need minutes to show what they can do. Give them 2 minutes with guards that don't distribute and they won't show much. Give them minutes where they can show all of their game and they will show all the parts of their game that contribute to winning basketball.
As much as it sucked to get blown out, I was very happy that it allowed him to get some run.

That's a shame. I always thought he and Alec needed minutes to show their entire game and get in a shooting rhythm. Unfortunately their perceived lack of athleticism limits their chances and their minutes in the nba. The few times I managed to see Rowdy play his minute it seemed like he was forcing his shots. Like he knew he was only going to get a minute or two to play and only likely to get one touch, so he had to throw up any kind of shot even if he didn't have a good look.
Dirk and Barea are inactive for today's game, so Rowdy is getting minutes, and doing something with it! He is 3/3 and 2/2 from 3 in 7 minutes in the second quarter.
Edit: 3 minutes later, and he now has 11 points on 4/5 and 3/4 for 3! He is the leading scorer for the Mavs as halftime approaches.
Go Rowdie!
Up to 15 points with 5:44 left in the game, on 6/8 and 3/5 shooting. He is playing well overall, and has probably been in for the last 5-6 minutes.
We lose 106-100, but the only reason it was that close, is because our bench brought the 19 point lead down to single digits in the 4th, led by Rowdy's play. Great job in 22 minutes!

What was his final line?
6-8 from the floor, 3-5 from 3-point range. 1 reb and 3 assists. 22 minutes played.
The thing that I find amazing is that he and Jalen Brunson got them back in the game..an then they got pulled for the starters (who had played awful) down the stretch.
They might've been out of gas if they'd be in for a while 🤷♂️
...or not.
You put 3 Rowdies, 1 muscular 4 and 1 decent 5 on the floor and you'd be a winner.
I think that the bench played a good 7-8 minute stretch without many timeouts in the 4th, so the starters came back in. They did finally make some headway, but I assume that if the lead increased with 4 minutes left, Carlisle would have put the bench in and left them in.
He's having some games where he really flashes brilliance. I think he's gonna stick in the league. Go Rowdy! Every team needs a Rowdy.
Rowdy is a player who needs minutes to show all that he brings. No, he's not going to throw down a bunch of flashy dunks that make sports center. He's gonna make layups. No he's not a big body rebounder, but he has a nose for the ball and he will get his share of rebounds, even in the nba. No, he's not gonna break a defender's ankles with some fancy crossover dribble, he's gonna rise up and knock down a good percentage of 3's. He's gonna play good team defense and play unselfishly thereby making his teammates better. He can't show all he brings unless he gets minutes. He showed some of that tonight.
This was a key game for him going forward. He was in line to play 5-10 mpg at the start of the season, but lost out to Kleber and Finney-Smith. Both of them have been struggling over the last few games, which is good for Rowdy. Especially when Barea and Harris are healthy, he is competing for minutes that Kleber and Finney-Smith have been taking, even though they don't necessarily play the same position. When both of them were hitting 3's, they didn't need to try to see if Rowdy was going to be hot.
Tough role to play. Let's hope it works out. However guys like him hang around for years if they contribute occasionally even if it is in taking minutes in games in which the starters need to be sat for whatever reason.

Such a humble, down-to-earth guy. As I said to my Facebook friends when we signed him, Dallas fans are going to fall in love with Rowdy, once he shows what he can do:

If he only gets the chance!
With 2 minutes to go and dallas chasing 9, Ryan has yet to appear in the game. Dallas is shooting 8-26 from 3 tonight.
Saw this and thought I'd post it to notify everyone, especially those of us who have enjoyed meeting Ryan's family members. Sending thoughts and prayers, hoping nothing serious and that all will be well for Rowdy and Katie.

Thoughts are with him
Weren't they expecting a baby soon?
Yes, but I believe that the timing is in the March to May timeframe
Yeeha!!! I'm going to watch the Mavericks play the Bucks on Monday...
Can't wait to see Ryan in the NBA.
(Last time I went to an NBA game to see a former Valpo player was Bryce.)
Go V.U. !!!
 The never aging Rowdy

Check it out ... Ryan is so good that he had 1 assist and 3 points with no minutes played... truly amazing!

Go V.U. !!!
statistically, I believe that means he did that in <30 seconds. Some software require a full 60-seconds to count for a minute.

TRUE ... but it is so much funnier to think that his skill level is so advanced that he gets stats from the bench...
Go V.U. !!!
That Porzingis trade is great for Dallas but it's devastating for Rowdy
I disagree. Losing Matthews helps his case, with the fact that JJ is out for the season, as well. He just played 27 minutes in the transition game and did well, as he needed to, in order to gain some additional playing time when the new guys join. Porzingis is likely out for all of this season, so it is really just the 2 guards coming back, and I think that Rowdy can beat out Hardaway Jr. for playing time.
Rowdy has 12 points in 14 minutes of play, and is 4/7 from three in the first half so far tonight against the Cavaliers.

What I had forgotten is that Ryan's good friend Dellavedova is playing for Cleveland. I'm in Dayton tonight on business and am watching the Cav's broadcast on Fox Sports Ohio.
Interesting that Ryan had a foul called on him that he didn't agree with and he chased down the female NBA referee to make his point. I'm sure the word "ma'am" might have been in the conversation.
Great to see Ryan have another game with lots of quality minutes.
I must say, however, that the gray Mavericks' uniform is not flattering to Ryan's figure...
He has positioned himself well for when Burke, Hardway Jr, and Lee arrive, so it will be interesting to see if he is fully back in the normal rotation, or just end-of-the-bench again.

As we head into the week before All-Star Weekend, current all-time Valpo players in the NBA scoring update:
Bryce 1081 (118 rookie year)
John Janisch 734
Milt Schoon 616
Bob Dille 296
Alec Peters 82 (20 games)
Ryan Broekhoff 65 (22 games played)
Don Bielke 14
Will he catch Bryce's 118 rookie year number? Will he catch Alec by end of February?
Rowdy's 3-point shot looks the same today as when he was at Valpo, and now that he is getting some playing time, the NBA is getting to see it. PS: God, I miss this game atmosphere at the ARC!
That Valpo team would totally swamp our current squad.
Porzingis isn't going to play this season so any minutes he would have taken from Broekhoff won't be.
Could the Barnes trade mean a bump up in minutes for Rowdy?

He didn't play at all tonight after playing a lot of minutes and scoring 12 in the last game. Don't know why. Maybe someone who follows Dallas more closely has some thoughts?

The Barnes trade likely will cause someone on the team to be waived. Keep your fingers crossed for Rowdy!
It'll be Randolph he hasn't played all season.

Update: Good news for Rowdy. Looks like Mejri is the player to be waived:

Randolph can't be waived until after he is signed, so someone else has to go first, which it appears will be Salah Mejri.
I think all of this results in more minutes for Rowdy. Barnes took lots of minutes. Jackson Lee and Hardaway won't take all of them and all of Matthews' minutes. There should be some for Broekhoff. Plus without Jordan they'll probably play small a lot. Hello tired guards. Ryan should get some opportunities to show what he can do especially on any back to backs or 3 games in 4 nights situations.
Rowdy will be fine, and get some more minutes. I hate to see Mejri go, even though he didn't play much this season. I think that it is stupid that we are trying yet another 'splash' in the offseason, as we always lose out.
Fun to see back-to-back threes for Rowdy, who must be thrilled to celebrate with a high-five from future Hall of Fame member Dirk Nowitzki.

Rowdy for 3 point contest!
Love this..... I search youtube every once in a while looking for Ryan highlights
Go V.U. !!!
And........?

Rowdy finally getting call from the coach during the last two games and making a statement he belongs in the NBA: 30 points in 42 minutes of playing time!
I look forward to meeting him after the 4/5 game, and hope that he has a few more of these before that game!
Bryce 1081 (118 rookie year)
John Janisch 734
Milt Schoon 616
Bob Dille 296
Ryan Broekhoff 115 (34 games)
Alec Peters 82 (20 games)
Don Bielke 14
Ryan solidly in 5th place and will now chase Bob Dille. With 3 more points, Rowdy will catch Bryce's rookie year 118 ?
And a third consecutive good game for Ryan: 29 minutes, 11 points, 3-5 from three point range. He is over 40% on the season from three point range.
I think he's going to stick and have a decent and long career folks. That's only good for us. Go Rowdy! Go Valpo!
"Ryan from accounting slams it home!"

I love the Mavs announcers. Fun guys to listen to every game.
We had our Valpo Club of DFW event at the Mavs game today, and though we lost, it was good to see Rowdy have another solid game. After the game, he was kind enough to come visit with us for probably a good 25-30 minutes, even into the time that many of the arena lights were being turned off, and made everyone's day that attended. I had thought that it would just be a simple meet and greet with a photo, and was just happy for that possibility, but he openly took the time to speak with each of us. He is a fantastic guy all around, and a great representative of Valpo!
Ryan is a class guy and a great representative of Valpo.
Looking at his finished season, he certainly got more playing time towards the end of the season and, for the most part, took advantage of the opportunity. He ended up shooting 41% from three, which is likely to keep him on the Mavs' or another team's radar. Let's hope that he gets a good opportunity next year - its always good to see great things happen for great people.
Postgame picture:
Final Season stats and rankings of Valpo NBA players scoring:
Bryce 1081 (118 rookie year)
John Janisch 734
Milt Schoon 616
Bob Dille 296
Ryan Broekhoff 167 (42 games)
Alec Peters 82 (20 games)
Don Bielke 14
A second similar year will likely move him past Bob Dille. He would need a greater role in 19-20 to pass Schoon and Janisch, but 8 ppg over 70 games would have him closing in on Bryce.
I see him back with the Mavs. The coaches loved him, and he proved that he could play at that level over the last 2 months. Anyone notice a former VU basketball player in the pic, outside of Rowdy? There were actually 2 there that day, but the other one wasn't with our group.
