Will they have a head coaching job for his wife as well?
After the 2017 season I would have said yes. How Lehigh sells bringing in a 2-9 coach I'm not sure. So I would say this is not a season to be worried after for any job.

I don't think that would matter.
Its official, the Lehigh job is open.
He will probably interview, but I don't think he gets it after this last season.
I have not heard whether or not Dave has officially interviewed
From Lehigh board and a football alum:
"We need an open and thorough search and quite frankly we do NOT need or want Dave Cecchini, Tom Gilmore, Phil Stambaugh, Ron Jean, or any other Lehigh Alum just because they were great players. I say this being a Lehigh Football Alum who supports all of those guys. But quite honestly they are not qualified.
I am very close to Lehigh Football and alumni base. To be honest the general consensus is if we hire Dave Cecchini than we should drop the program to Division 3 because hiring him is the easy thing to do and shows that we do not care about football anymore."

This poster may need to go on suicide watch if he's informed that 3 or 4 of Valpo's current assistants, including the OC and DC, either played at or coached at Lehigh. ;D

First, this guy aspires to grandure for Lehigh. It sound like he'd grill Lou Saban if he applied.
Second, he seems to dismiss all Lehigh alums. Wha........?
Next, if Dave had turned Valpo around in three years and took us to the FCS playoffs in year 3 he'd be singing a different tune.
I wouldn't think this single opinion is totally reflective all Lehigh alums.
But I concur with other posters here that Dave has not yet demonstrated he is worthy of the Lehigh job. He has to make some tough decisions in the next couple of months about the offensive scheme and what to do to improve our defensive approach. Dave has done some very positive things to raise the level of competitvenes of our program, but if additional positive and constructive changes are not made, we may be stuck in a spiral that will ensure mediocrity.

Ha, ha. Good catch 24 - I meant Nick Saban not Lou Saban. Although Lou Saban, who died in 2009, did have a rather 'remarkable' coaching career ;) He was nick-named "Lou 2.2" because over his long career he averaged 2.2 years per job. His head coaching resume began in 1950 and ended in 2002. He coached at 10 colleges and held HFBC positions with 4 teams in the old AFL and the NFL (Boston, Buffalo, Denver, and Buffalo again).
QuoteThis is exactly what I am talking about. I have met Dave Cecchini several times. I like Dave Cecchini. But we are going to overlook his record but not the Coordinators at Elon? Yes the Pioneer is non-scholarship the whole league is. So why would one school have an adavantage over the other? I we are going to say that we should overlook DC's record because they are more competitive in games than they were before, why would we not make the same concession for the Elon Coordinators? They were 6-5 have been to the playoffs back to back years and prior to the new staff at Elon they were consistently at the bottom of the conference.
If DC is the best candidate great, but his body of work as a Head Coach suggests otherwise.
Ouch Again
VUCRUSVU, source of the quote? The Lehigh Fan Board? Not familiar with the Elon references in this context.
Yes to the Lehigh board. In fact its the same guy that JD24 quoted earlier in the thread.
Thought so. Thanks for doing the digging.
The Patriot League has a much higher profile than the PFL (but still lower than the Ivy League which usually beats them 1 on 1 furing the season despite not being a "scholarship" league). And the member schools are all loaded with money and aiumni financial support. Rich traditions there. They are not likely to take a flyer on a questionable record of performance.

Not going to start a new thread on this but since we're talking coaches, Drake's coach Rick Fox stepped down yesterday. Doesn't appear that anyone saw this coming.
Here's a Tweet about the Drake happening.... People on the PFL Fan Board are scratching their heads. Fox had a very good yesr - 2nd in the PFL and then his team took FBS Iowa State pretty much to the wire (lost 27-24) in a 12th game before 56,000 fans in Ames. They were thrown into the "Availa-Bowl" as a replacement for Incarnate Word which made the FCS playoffs and had to bow out of their contracted game.

To do so, knowing that your wife has a head coaching job and that your kids are settled in school, would imply that Drake could pay SIGNIFICANTLY more money. Do you really think that is possible? No way. To move to the "next level" only one thing is required: Winning. It can be done at Valpo as easily as at Drake. We are after the same players. Recruit, coach, win.
Wouldn't make any sense to move from Valpo to Drake. Is there any history of coaches moving between PFL programs? I mean other than Harbaugh moving from San Diego to that team up north that is.

Harbaugh, as well as more financial support from the university, turned Stanford around. They were at the bottom of the Pac 12 until he coached there.
Years back, we pretty much thought this job for Cecchini was not long term but a stepping stone for greater things. Going to Drake is not a step up in division, but there have have coaches at Drake that went on to bigger jobs. Drake has a better football tradition than Valpo and have better facilities to draw non-scholarship players. Recently, coaching at Valpo has not provided opportunities for better jobs.

I would guess it would have to do with the nature of the 2-9. If three of four captains are again out for most of the year or if games are competitive though losses, then most likely not. Remember that when the plug was pulled on Carlson if was after losing to Butler, 72-12. To the alumni, winning the Butler game makes it a "good" season, and Dave has done that, three times in a row.

There was more talent coming back prior to this season. So I'm not sure how compelling that argument would be considering the disaster that was this season.
Reading some tea leaves, and I've mentioned this to other Valpo fans who did not disagree with me, I think something is up somewhere in the program involving the staff and overall program. If the school actually gave a snit about the football program, a followup 2-9 season should have a change strongly being considered whether Butler is beaten or not. If the school doesn't care in any significant way, which is what I suspect, then they will throw the tired Carlson argument out there "at least it is not Carlson" and remain the loser program the school would be choosing to be.

Clearly Valpo has shown they "give a snit" via investments into the new weight room and locker rooms since Dave has come on board. Having said that, Valpo has always been a basketball school and as the flagship program, will always be so. Do we want a winning football program? Of course. The result of last season was disappointing but, given all the injuries, was pretty hard to avoid. As for the inward "vibes" I have know way of judging that. It just seems like Dave had been making significant strides forward going into last year and the disappointing results from one season certainly shouldn't be a reason to question whether or not Dave would be on the hot seat.

Yes but the reference was to "after another 2-9 season" which uscvalpo posted and you answered. If the school didn't consider a change at that point, then it doesn't give a snit about the program which was my overall point....new locker rooms and a few new uniforms aside.
I don't think the staff as a whole should be in any jeopardy after this past year but I do sense, as do others, that something is up in that regard. In terms of the Lehigh job or any other job my first question to Cecchini would be why he has not changed his DC. There may be a logical retort to that which hamstrung him from doing so but if the answer is that he thought everything was ok I'd eliminate him immediately. A HC has to be able to make appropriate staff adjustments thoughout his career and this includes coaches who can recruit well.

Perhaps because DC has been looking for a new job? I do know that one coach who started the year left the staff last month... Tulcin? I don't even remember what he coached. Either way, I agree with your comment, and it is concerning.

Rob Tulcin was the LBer coach for two seasons and gave yet another Lehigh alum a coaching position. For whatever reason, LBer coach has been the coaching spot that has undergone the most change during Cecchini's tenure. Stovall, Mattix and Manalac each had the job for one season. Coach Greiner also coached the LBers.
Funny thing is that we have had consistently good LB play over time if you go by the stats in a general context (i.e., not knowing the exact system and responsibilities mandated by that system). Our DL, on the other hand, has been a gradual work of progress over that same stretch. But there is an observable improvement in DL play over year one of Dave's tenure. And then, there's the secondary. We've had some good individual play, but over time, I've not seen this unit come together and establish a tradition of strong unit play.
Getting back to "the system" it could be that we had the personnel, but the system itself did not utilize them properly, although that, again, comes down to how the staff uses that system.
Just my :twocents:
Kurt Mattix took the DC job at Eastern Kentucky. Ryan Manalac went to Div II or III Ohio Dominion as DC. He is from Ohio originally. So those moves make sense.
Interesting that both also did not come out of the Lehigh connection.
As an aside, I didn't think the DL played particularly well this season. At least not as well as I expected. They were gashed way too often on the ground to be considered a good unit.
While our offense has been mostly respectable in PFL competition, some on this board have had concerns about our ability to stop opposing offenses.

True enough, however, wouldn't you agree that college football has evolved into a wide open, throw it all over the field, kinda thing? How many times does our QB actually take a snap under center? When I played, leather helmets aside, I don't remember ever taking a direct snap. Witness some of the scores in the league. Record setting stuff.
As a result, the defense needs more athletes who can move. The days of the big, slow, stop the run because that's all there is are gone. So are three yards and a cloud of dust!
Valpo football, and their athletics in general, need to be proactive with change rather than reactive. All teams get new uniforms and better locker room facilities. What else should be done to enhance the overall experience to bring quality student athletes in?

The general statement of throwing it all over the place is true, I'm just not sure how true it is in the PFL. The League features two teams which are triple option teams, one of which nearly never throws the ball. A couple of more teams which run it more than throw it. A couple of more teams which split it nearly down the middle and a couple of teams which throw it more than run it....one of which is Valpo. So, in the PFL, you'd better be able to shut the run down.
PFL stats are telling. Valpo was 8th in total defense and 9th in total offense. 6th in rushing defense; 8th in pass defense; 8th in both rushing and passing offense. Keep in mind that Valpo was fortunate in not having to face San Diego last season which may have made the defensive stats look worse.
Valpo had the least number of rushing attempts in the league last season which I felt, and vocalized during the season, was a mistake. Valpo's defense was on the field for the most plays in the PFL last season. Valpo's offense running the ball more often would have likely changed that. Throwing the ball as often as Valpo did while completing only 50% of their passes was foolish.

A good question. What I don't understand is why a kid would ever play D3 when he could play D1 at Valpo. First, the quality of the education is first class. Second, most if not all D3 football is comprised of short bus rides to opponents. Valpo plays a national schedule akin to Notre Dame, at least from a travel standpoint. I certainly would find flying to Florida or California pretty appealing as opposed to busing to Layfayette.
Our weight room has everything that Notre Dame has, just on a smaller basis.
We do draw kids from all over the country (15 different states). Presuming that the talent is there, success can be tied to coaching. Having said that, a new system has been in place for three years now and if juniors and seniors were playing then there would be no excuses. However, at the beginning of the year we had 1 RS Fr on the two deeps. By the end we had 2 True Fr and 3 RS Fr on the two deeps. Those guys were not Juniors and seniors.
I guess I don't have any answers beyond the injuries for a lack of success. Perhaps if we had an in-door practice facility it might be more appealing particularly as the fall moves into winter and practice can be pretty harsh.

At any rate....this site is pretty reliable and was when Cecchini was being hired by Valpo:
http://footballscoop.com/the-scoop/
"Lehigh (FCS – PA): Per source, Elon (FCS – NC) offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Drew Folmar is a strong candidate to become be the new head coach at Lehigh. However, we understand that no deal is in place yet. We will keep you posted as things develop."
I was getting worried about hearing the "Shields Up" slogan a second time.
footballscoop.com says no offer has been extended and other candidates besides Folmar are still under consideration. Reads more like Lehigh is having difficulty getting the coach they seem to want which makes a Dave candidacy possibly more realistic. This, naturally, depends on how interested he'd be in heading back to Pennsylvania.
I've seen stranger things, such as Gene Chizik being given the Auburn HC job after 3-9 and 2-10 seasons at Iowa State.

Tom Gilmore has quite a long resume that goes back to 1986. He was HFBC at Holy Cross for 13 years and spent 7 years on the staff at Dartmouth. His tie to Lehigh is 4 years on the staff there (2000-2003)
Thanks... been lurking for long while, decided to dive in.
Tried to post the active link, kept telling me that I could not... maybe a newbie deal?
I believe you need 5 posts in order to post an active link -- you're right, it's to prevent spammers from screwing up the board.
