Title: 2018 NACUBO
Post by: 78crusader on February 03, 2019, 02:31:43 PM
The annual NACUBO endowment study is out. Results:

VU total 250,417,000
Rank: #283

Here are the numbers for prior years:

2017 235,218,000 #282
2016 204,706,000 #295
2015 204,314,000 #302
2014 202,737,000 #302
2013 177,976,000 #301

Not sure why our endowment isn't higher in light of the current campaign, which has raised $200 million over the last 4+ years. I realize not all of the $200 mil was earmarked for the endowment, but still...

This may sound critical, but besides money not being earmarked for endowment my guess is that some donations get 'counted' as towards endowment (e.g., donations and commitments directly towards scholarship that are not endowed).

What is the date for these calculations?

Some of the endowment are part of estate plans I believe which means they are pledged to us and are going into the University total of the drive but we may not have it in our possession yet so others wont' count it. Also I believe there have been some direct donations (Like the Hilltop stuff) included in the drive so again, while counting on our side as part of it, won't be seen in an evaluation.

I would think a fair amount falls into this category.  You can't count it if you haven't received it.  People can change their minds.  Some of the gifts mentioned on the site (like the $4.1 million estate gift from Dee Herscher) may not have made it into these numbers as the announcement is dated June 28 and if the estate needed to settle it could take quite some time as 78 certainly would know.

Also, in July the total raised/committed was around $170 million, now at $200 million so I would expect a nice jump in next years numbers.

So our rank is almost exactly the same as the prior year.    Market growth like S&P average was probably quite high over that 12-month span between July 1, 2017 and July 1, 2018, but that's also the case for everyone else.  And since our payout to budget is probably the same as others (4-5%), we  received a completely average amount of gifts in the year compared to size of endowment.   Thus we rank #282 vs. #283 in the last two rankings.

Is average ok?   Maybe so.  But it doesn't show any campaign impact took place.
