OK, I started the SIUE thread....and Valpo won it 89-76. Clobbering the Spread and the OU.
UND will be hard to scout. Blew out a DII and got schooled by Gonzaga in their two games.
Coming off that "WOWSER" game against SIUE, JFL with 30 and 13, Robinson with 19 and 8, Kiser 8 and 7 and generally in the way of the Cougars...

30 minutes of basketball... 1 turnover against Gonzaga, 7 total fouls.
UND returns 6 of 8 rotation players from a team that went 12-18 (6-10 Summit, 7th) last year. The two graduating seniors were first and third on the team in scoring. First year coach Paul Sather takes over for Brian Jones, who left to take an assistant coaching job at Illinois State for reasons unbeknownst to me. But basketball plays third fiddle at UND behind hockey and football, so that may have had something to do with it. For what it's worth, Sather managed to keep all of the rotation players in Grand Forks, which is an accomplishment in today's era of transfers.
Perimeter D will be important. Moody, Stewart, and Brown can all get hot from deep. Allen-Eikens is a freshman who had 22 in their win over D3 Crown College, and shows potential. Lots of excitement around him. Like Valpo, UND's frontcourt is a little thinner, especially on defense. Rebraca is a 6-9 Serbian postman. Walter is a stretch-4 who can shoot the three and is a bit of a matchup problem. But again, interior defense and rebounding are weak points for UND.
These are two remarkably similar teams. At the beginning of the season, I saw this game as a tossup, but I like our chances after seeing what Valpo is capable of. Then again, doesn't look like we'll have Fazekas.
UND board: https://forum.siouxsports.com/forum/16-men39s-basketball/
Expect another fast paced run-and-gun game. If we can keep TOs low and their three point shooting in check, we'll be in good shape.

What seems to be the issue with telling us what is up with Ryan? Did he break his wrist? Did he sprain his wrist? He he coming along nicely? Geez. This is really weird.

I think I am spoiled by the professional sports leagues and their general "open" reporting policy on injuries. The HIPAA thing is real and I suspect more relevant today than when I played college sports. Maybe with the proliferation of betting on college sports (legally) this will drive more athletic departments to work out contracts with their athletes for reporting purposes (doubtful at our level).
Although part of me suspects that maybe Lottich is not a fan of "over" information in the medical realm, so he falls back on HIPAA as a reason why he's tight lipped. All conjecture, but fun to float ideas anyways.
PAUL THIS COULD BE A GREAT QUESTION FOR GORE if he comes on the Podcast again. Has anything changed (during his tenure) in reporting of injuries that makes it more difficult to speak openly as a coach? Just a thought.
He clearly broke a bone in his wrist or hand. So you are looking at 6-10 weeks depending on what bone it is and what kind of blood flow it receives. They don't have to actually say it to know what happened. There are enough context clues we can end the speculation. Let's not talk about this every week for the next 2 months! The team we have without him is the team we are going to have for the majority of the season. We need to recalculate what a successful season looks like without him and move on.
10 weeks = returns a couple weeks into the conference slate...

NCAA injury debate pits player privacy vs. gambling concernsBy TERRIN WAACK

Privacy laws such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protect players against the release of personal information without the consent of players or their parents if the player is under 18. HIPAA protects medical records. FERPA protects educational records, along with medical records if treatment is given on behalf of a university. At least some players and coaches want that privacy to stay in place.
"I coached in the NFL for nine years and there is a stark difference between working with professionals and working with college kids," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "I do not feel right giving out medical information of a 19-year-old. I think it's wrong in any way, shape or form."

This injury (what ever it may consist of) to Ryan is awful. I feel for the young man, I really do. I have to agree with what SaintyLost17 is saying.
The team must find another ways to stay strong and together as one unit. We played well in St. Louis and pulled through to win in the second half last night. We can not have a collapse like we did last year when Ryan went out. From what I have seen I feel our talent is stronger and attitude is better this time around.
$36 for North Dakota...? Really...?
I think this is. "Buy game" and they are try to recoupe that $ but this seems a bit high... for North Dakota of all teams.
https://twitter.com/brickies1988/status/1195038436127850497?s=21
I think if you look close. The query is for 2 tickets. Then they are charging a service fee and postage.
It is $37 each but those are the prices on Vivid Seats, a secondhand site. No idea who's selling them but there's still plenty at $12 on the Vu site.
This is actually an interesting/fascinating area . . . The younger generation is so used to buying tickets through secondhand sites, and receiving them digitally instantaneously, that it's where they go to buy all of their tickets. Crazy, but they haven't experienced standing in line for tickets , or order them straight from a venue. I'm sure there are not many tickets on secondhand sites, causing the increased price.

Crazy prices, buyer be ware. Wish I could tell the person looking for the tickets to go to the Valpo site. Tons of good seats behind the visitors bench starting at row 4 for $12. Still also alot of $27 chairbacks available
We need a good defensive game.

Am I reading this right? $27.00 for a chairback seat against North Dakota? Huh? $27.00?
For $35.00 (plus fees), I could see the Florida Panthers play against the Rangers tomorrow at a much better venue, with a much better game experience, and with much better concessions available to me.
Wow.
Yeah the static prices don't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me. $27 for any chair back not in the first couple rows, and $12 pretty much anywhere else. I know they experimented with dynamic pricing a couple of years ago and they have the 3 and 4 game packs, but I would like to see some outside the box thinking here.
Is this one of our buy games? If we paid UND to come play us, we better win.

Now you know you jinxed it. We'll win but we'll get down by 11 or 12 before pulling it out in the 2nd half because Freeman will say "Hell no, bro, we ain't losing to a team from Dakota!"

Nice win that showed the depth and defensive abilities we have. Great to see our two freshman gaining confidence. They will both be studs. They had turned the ball over about a dozen times coming into this game and we stole the show. Fun team. Anybody miss the departed?? ;D
This team is fun and deep. Good energy. The ball moves and is shared. The defensive intensity is there as always. I like not having to sweat out games against teams we should beat handily. I'm not sure what the Paradise Jam will bring but I am excited. Maybe we'll surprise people there.
I definitely like the depth and the energy and it will be interesting to see how Valpo does in the V.I. tournament. Javon really looks like a first team MVC player and there are good signs from Robinson and Maleek. GCU seems to not be playing very well and it is hard to judge where Nevada is right now with Alford and such a new roster. Valpo could definitely surprise on their end of the bracket.
Interesting possible matchups for Valpo's third game (hopefully the championship game): Cincinnati (with Sorolla) and Illinois State (a weird situation with a conference opponent in a non-conference game).

I thought some of the same things. MLB should chat with other MVC private school AD's to see how those schools work with pep bands. Has to be an easy way. Noticed were not many students in attendance either excluding the 10 band members. Maybe 30-50 or so range?

Sunday matinees are always terrible for attendance (seriously, can we stop scheduling them?), but it's not like the Bears are keeping people attached to their TVs. To the students' credit, I heard a few fake shotclock countdowns that appeared to force up early contested shots, but causation is difficult to prove there. Disappointed to see them sitting for most of the second half.
It's been said before and will be said again, but man, I really hope Fazekas gets healthy ASAP because I think we're definitely a top-half MVC team with him. Regardless, I was impressed with how JFL got going, and McMillan has come along as a player on both ends.
North Dakota looked sloppy with the ball. Only had six TOs vs. Gonzaga, but 19 in their exhibition win over a D3 opponent. Valpo is going to have to create turnovers and fastbreak opportunities like we did today to compete with the more talented teams on our schedule. Certainly have the personnel for it.

I don't know who Maleek is, but I thought Robinson and McMillan looked pretty good. Now that he's a much smaller liability on defense, I wonder if they can find a way to run the offense through Mileek when Freeman is on the bench. He's always had a good scoring touch and we look lost when Javon isn't out there.
Only 1 real complaint for this game. McMillan clearly had a tight hamstring to start the game and on his last layup in the 2nd half he clearly aggravated it even more. I am super excited he had great stats playing at less than 100%, but have to question why he played in the 2nd half at all? Seems a little questionable to me because hamstrings are tricky.

When Freeman wasn't in there, it looked like last year's offense. I think they had Sackey, Krikke, Clay, Robinson and McMillan and while they played well defensively, the ball just stopped moving.

Agree that the motion seemed off while he wasn't out there but, part of it may be the two freshman still getting their feet wet. Looking at the box score showed six guys hitting threes which didn't include Sackey who saw a few of his attempts rattle out. The ability to have others hit from outside will keep teams from doubling Javon or packing it in like last year.
Nice win over the Fighting Souix!
Only got to stay for the first half...looked like a lot of of our guys running into the wrong spots on half court sets. Little confusion (either by them or maybe by this onlooker).
Great job by Mileek and Javon on offense. Going to take a couple guys each night (Javon + 1). Keep the winning going.

Krikke tried to back down a defender a couple of trips late and in both cases really wasn't aggressive with his shot. A weak layup attempt and a fall away hook shot. My immediate reaction since he's lefthanded was "I thought Smits transferred???" As with Smits, either go to the basket immediately or kick it out.
Please, no comparisons with DS.
Young, inexperienced, yes. Lack of hustle, unable to leap, defensively challenged, no 3pt. potential, ah....... no. ;D
Had one bad 4 minute stretch when Javon needed a breather, but keep in mind that coincided with Kiser on the bench with 4 fouls. Kiser's leadership and understanding of what to do and where to be on both ends of the court cannot be understated. There's a reason why Kiser is averaging over 30 minutes a game.

I'd have to agree with VULB#62 on this one, Smits and he are totally different players. For one thing, Smits always had the bulk advantage to his side so backing a player down should have been a yawn (it wasn't). More to the point, Krikke defends and the alone is worth dropping the comparison. Oh, and he doesn't whine at the referees while a fast break is happening the other way . . .

Agree on all counts. Krikke already has learned to stand straight up and slide his feet and keep verticality at all times. He also hustles down the floor on every play. No Whining.
Smits was a better offensive player LAST YEAR. But Krikke is way ahead of where Smits was the 1st 2 years he played here (excluding freshman year when he was hurt).
That and an injury...Kiser is fantastic from the shoulders up. It's taken 3+ years but I've come around to believing that you almost need a guy like him on a winning team's roster.
Tons of great action pics of the game from NWI Times.

Clearly. Completely different players.
My post was referring to a few minute period in the second half when Krikke decided to post up, stopped the ball and then weakly made an attempt to score. He also happens to be lefthanded. My post was also more to get a chuckle out of the board.
For those that have criticized Kiser over the years, I stand by my points early on, that he is a 'glue guy,' and he is now actually producing above what we would really need from him on the stat sheet.

Who have been our "glue" guys since the Bryce Drew days? Would that role be defined as utility guy or can they be a stats stuffer?
A few examples...
Tonagel
Joaquim Gomes (Kikas)
Jake Diebler
Erik Buggs
Matt Kenney
Bobby Capobianco
In my view, that role is one where you take his minutes away and the team has identity problems. I don't think most listed were "stars" for their respective teams though.
I view a 'glue guy' as someone that can help settle folks down, not turn the ball over, and contribute in ways outside of the stat sheet. They don't put up large numbers, but they are key to keeping everyone together, and not losing focus when things go terribly wrong. Matt Kenney is a great example of what I would consider this type.

I think this is a case in which both those who criticized the player in the past and now believe him to be a "glue" guy can be correct and even the same poster.
I love Kiser's story. Plucky walk on who earns a scholarship and becomes a contributor. At the same time I looked at him as a measure of the team's talent, thinking that if he's getting a lot of playing time, then the team lacks talent. Someone whose presence on the court meant that on offense we were playing four on five because he had no offensive game at all. This year on the other hand he has shown that he can hit an open three, and he is willing to take and make shots. So, a glue guy who isn't a complete liability on offense is a big plus for this team.

I think some kind of look into the plus/minus stats (I've no idea how to do them except it has to do with how many points are scored against and for when a certain player is on the floor) which I think would reveal a lot about the play of John Kiser.
