Title: Valpo vs Evansville in St. Louis 3/5/20 @ 8:30 CST
Post by: VUSWIM08-12 on March 05, 2020, 08:19:58 AM
12 hours until game time, would be nice to real off at least two in the MVC tourney but with Javon just coming back who knows. I'd love a 3rd shot a Loyola!! Maybe shoot like we did against Mizz St!! Is Evansville 100% healthy? What is the cutoff to make any post season tournament? Is it typically .500 in a quality league?

Valpo 72
Evansville 69

big game for the ladies as a warm-up for the Big Event.  The ladies play Missouri  State (1st place) and seeding at risk.  They hope to avoid Thursday as well.  Game starts at 7 Central.

I think it's a .500 overall record which I believe a win tonight would clinch for us. Go Valpo! I BELIEVE!

So if we lose is Lottich gone?

They have played us close this year and could beat us.   I can see it happening.  Evansville has a lot to prove and the pressure is on us.  A bad shooting night of chugging 25+ 3's and waiting for JFL to save us could happen.

I don't see how he could survive a loss tonight.

I don't see 1-game changing his likely trajectory today or in the next year.  It might add to the fodder but he'd have to do something terribly ignorant to get fired in my estimation.

We could beat anyone. We could lose to anyone. Pretty much sums it up. Good parity. Anyone could win this tournament.
Anyone could bow out early in an "upset" in this tournament. Nothing would really surprise me at this point. Hoping for a good week(end) of b-ball.

Even UNI doesn't seem out of reach ... I feel like Loyola is in our heads and more mental - apart from Krutwieg who we don't have any answers to (nor do most of their other opponents). And, we almost broke that curse last time out ... and at their place. We beat Indiana Stat, Drake, Bradley, MSU, etc. once ... really is anybody's to win.

Especially if it's in the championship round with as many minutes as their starters have played during the season and will have played in the tournament.

Didn't shoot the ball well, but fortunately they played worse. Hope we can hit a few in the second half and not go into one of our usual scoring droughts or this could get uncomfortable real quick. Keep playing good defense, control the boards and hit free throws.

Lottich shouldn't be sacked if we lose to Evansville nor should he.

But let's be honest, AD is not sacking him even if we had 6 losing seasons and 6 Thursday night games.

Frustrating play.  It's that disorienting period when a key player returns and tries too hard. JFL is definitely not in peak form.

What an uninspired offensive performance. Seemed out of sorts and sloppy. Bit embarrassing, hopefully someone can hit a 3 tomorrow.

Defense stepped up though. D like that and our offensive average will at least give us a shot against Loyola.

I love nail biters as long as we win. Fazekas sat almost as much as he played. Was that just matchup issues? Freeman sick and rusty, McMillan not much, Gordon less, and not even an appearance from Morgan. Just not the minute distribution I had imagined.

Live by the 2, die by the 3?

I may be mistaken, but I think I remember that one against Akron was a Coaches vs. Cancer game, they gave out powder blue shirts to students (I think I still have mine somewhere), and we somehow won that won too in unremarkable fashion.

At the end of the game I am not sure Kiser shouldn't have just dribbled into the corner to kill the clock. I understand the dunk that put us up by 3. Also, it worked out but was anyone else surprised Lottich took a time out there.

Yes, Lickliter signed a multi-year contract with the school. The contract is believed to be similar in pay to McCarty's which reportedly had a base salary of $250,000. The contract has not been made public.

Why wouldn't they bring Lickliter back? They played good inspired basketball under him. It didn't translate into wins but in the situation in which that program found itself I don't think anybody would have fared any better.

I had a longer analysis but sometimes this website eats your posts.  Anyway, briefly:

I have said many times this year, this team needs to learn to value possessions and the basketball way more.  Last night, almost proved the old adage -- whatever mistakes you were making in regular season magnify in the playoffs/tourneys.  First half, we had at least 3 possessions we threw or dribbled away that could have extended lead to 15-18 and effectively ended Eville's spirit and fight.  We let them crawl back in before half and then hang around.  College basketball is a series of runs.  Minimize theirs, extend yours.  Late 2d half, 2 empty possessions to extend lead to 5-6 and end the game.  A 1 and 1, need to hit the fronts. Film sessions should focus on those moments, eliminate the empty possessions and achieve greatness.

Survived and advanced. Beat Gryffindor!

If there was one game where it was ok to have an off night, last night was it. Survived and can move on. Hopefully the bad performance will motivate a better game today and help them shake off any rust.

A lot of us at the tournament were more afraid of Evansville than Loyola. We seem to match up better against Loyola. Throughout the year the Aces played great defense against the three ball.

Which we don't shoot particularly well anyway (a few late season games notwithstanding. We need to attack against the good perimeter defenses. Loyola has their own issues shooting the three (at least this year From what I understand that won't be the case next year).

Indeed. Fazekas was getting scored on consistently. You get the sense that he's avoiding contact to preserve himself. When he's getting open and shooting well, you can accept the softer defense, but Evansville didn't give him any opportunities and, worse of all, the rest of our offense couldn't make them pay for covering him tightly.

Hopefully, we've gotten through our jitters and Loyola experiences some of their own, but I'm not counting on it.

I didn't so much get the sense that he was avoiding contact but that he was getting caught in switches that left him guarding much quicker guards at the top of the key where he was getting beat off the dribble. With no rim protector behind him he is very vulnerable in that situation, and Evansville was going hard on the dribble drive in the second half.
