Title: MVC Blog
Post by: MVCBeat on November 26, 2020, 10:52:09 AM
Hello Crusaders,

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I started a new blog that will be focused on MVC Basketball and MVFC Football. I am a longtime Valley fan who is a veteran of 17 Arch Madnesses. I have been making MVC writeups for my friends for years and consider myself a pretty good writer, so I figured why not post my write-ups publicly for other MVC fans to read if they'd like? I intend to post a couple times a week. Sometimes I'll comment on the current league goings-on, sometimes I'll talk about the mid-major/NCAA scene overall, and sometimes I'll post about MVC history.

I launched yesterday with five articles. I have my 2020-21 MVC Preview broken into three parts, a piece detailing how I'd handle the NCAA Tournament during the pandemic, and a piece listing each MVC school's greatest basketball team of the 21st century (I did not include your Horizon years, but made mention of them). I think it is pretty good sampling of the things I intend to do moving forward.

I can't post an external link, so I'll just say the site is missourivalleybeat.  You'll have to add the w's and com's yourself.

Thanks!

Thank you!

Two new blog posts today.  One runs down the action in week one and updates the power rankings.  The other ranks the top 30 returning players in this year's MVC. The link is in the post above.  Thanks!

Hey Crusaders,

Two new writeups today. One is the power rankings and summary from week two. The other ranks all the DI conferences by strength (via RPI over the last 7 years). I've also written MVC preview articles, an article highlighting each school's best team of the 21st century, and an article ranking the top 30 returning players in the MVC this year (featuring Sackey, McMillan and Clay).

I've also added an "MVC Resources" page compiling all the MVC fan sites, blogs and podcasts I could find. If you have any I should add, let me know.

Hello Valpo fans,

There are two new posts on the blog this week.

-Week 3 MVC Power Rankings, Summery and Mid Major Tidbits: A decent amount of movement this week.

-Recapping Every Arch Madness Championship Game: Starting with the first St. Louis based MVC Tournament final in 1991, through last season, I recap every Arch Madness final as well as give a short summary of how the MVC did in the postseason that year.  Not a ton about Valpo since you are so new to the league, but perhaps it could be a nice history lesson for the new members.

You can also check out my other, older posts including my MVC Season Preview, Every MVC School's Best Team of the 21st Century, The MVC's Top 30 Returning Players, and Every DI Conference Ranked. I also have a page with links to every MVC message board, blog, and podcast that I know of. Let me know if I am missing anything.

Check it all out at the link in this thread's OP.

Hello Crusaders,Sorry to hear about the COVID issues.  That really sucks.  But it is probably better that it happens now than at the end of the year.
I have two new blog posts this week. The first ranks the MVC coaches. The second is the week four summary, power rankings, and mid-major bits. There is lots of other Valley content there as well if you haven't taken a look yet. Next week I am starting a two-part series where I simulate an MVC season (via whatifsports) using each team's best team of the 21st century from my earlier article. Should be fun.Check it out at the site.  It is missourivalleybeat with the standard w's and com's at the beginning and the end.

You were spot on with the MVC caching ranking. I agree that Lottich is the 10th best coach in the MVC. I don't think they wanted to lose Peters when Drew left. He has no head coaching experience so he is learning on the job. His player development and lineup decisions are questionable.

I think that is a fair assesment.  He still has time to show he has it figured out though.  The run in St. Louis last year was a good start.

Hello Crusaders,

Has to be a bummer not to be playing.  That sucks.  Hopefully ya'll get back on the court soon.

I just posted the week 5 updated power rankings.  I am also using the ten teams from my first article, "Every MVC School's Best Basketball Team of the 20th Century" to play out a simulated all-time MVC season using whatifsports.com.  Part one of my two part series on that is also posted.  I went ahead and used the 2016 NIT runner up team for Valpo, even though they aren't technically an MVC team.  I think you'll like what you see.  Might help you get through the program pause a bit!

Have a happy new year all.

The Week 6 Power Rankings and Tidbits are now posted.

I have also posted the second part of my All-Time MVC simulated season. The regular season has finished so you can see the final standings, where the 2016 Crusaders landed (spoiler alert, its good) and their scores.

Really looking forward to next week when I play out my all-time season's Arch Madness complete with box scores and game summaries. I have already started and it has been a blast.

Thanks for those of you who are reading. Really cool to see multiple hundreds of views on my articles!

Hello Crusaders,

There are two new posts this week. The first is my standard weekly power ranking, summaries and tidbits.

The second is one I am really excited about. It is Session 1 of my "All-Time Arch Madness" featuring all the teams from my "Every MVC School's Best Team of the 20th Century" article. For this, I have supplied a writeup and a box score for each game as provided by whatifsports. Session 1, Thursday Night, is posted, and I will be posting one session a day for the next five days.  As the 1-seed, 2016 Valpo will make its debut tomorrow in session 2 against (spoiler alert for today's article) 2016 Evansville so make sure to check back.  After this week, I'll get back to my normal stuff.

Thanks all. The link is here: https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/

Hello Valpo Fans,

The new weekly power rankings and summaries are posted. This week's other article is about the "Top 30 Newcomers in the MVC in 20-21 (So Far)". Featured Crusaders include Ognacevic, Edwards and Barrett.  Also my "All-Time Arch Madness" was played out in five sessions over the course of last week and that is now finished and posted.  You all should check it out, you'll likely find it more enjoyable than most.

Hello Valpo,

I just made two new blog posts. One is the standard power rankings and tidbits for week 9. The other is "Every MVC School's Most Famous Basketball Alum". The Valpo rep is Bryce Drew.  I also included an addendum for other famous alums at each school. Please let me know which ones I missed. I really enjoyed researching this one.

Alright, there is a lot of new stuff this week at https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/.

-We are now on Twitter. Follow @BeatMVC

-New week 10 power rankings and tidbits. The tidbits this week are essentially a mid-major bubble watch so I figure that might be interesting to some people. https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/week-10-summary-power-rankings-mid-major-bracketology-update

-This week's other article is a check-in on the Larry Bird Trophy race (written primarily before this weekend's games, so it is already a bit out of date. I look at the top 15 candidates with at least one from each team.  Donovan Clay is repped for Valpo. https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/midseason-larry-bird-trophy-watch-top-15

Thanks everyone! Have a good one!

Hello Valpo Fans! I have two new articles for your consumption. No new power rankings but I do have tid-bits. I pontificate on Loyola and Drake in the NCAAs, another weird COVID situation for the MVC at Hoops in the Heartland, Indiana State's reported new coach and a mid-major laden NIT field here:https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/tidbits-loyola-drake-indy-st-women-s-hoops-and-the-mid-major-nit (https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/tidbits-loyola-drake-indy-st-women-s-hoops-and-the-mid-major-nit)In my other piece I put together what a Mid Major NCAA Tournament might have looked like if the NCAA was split into two subdivisions in basketball similar to football:https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/alternate-reality-mid-major-basketball-championship (https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/alternate-reality-mid-major-basketball-championship)As always, you can follow me on Twitter @BeatMVCThanks everyone!

We're obviously the newest member, but St Louis is fun. Chicago and probably even Indy are too big of cities to have it in IMO, it'd just be another event for those cities. The idea of having it every other year in St Louis and bounce the other years around would be okay with me. But then does St Louis lose its appeal and would you need to rename it from Arch Madness?

It is an interesting article that raises some good points about the value of market size versus program brand/strength. Still, I strongly doubt that the writer has ever been to Murray, KY.

He said Loyola is the only school in a city. I think he forgot about Drake.

He talks about SLU and Wichita State. The likelihood is near zero that either come - SLU for reasons stated in my prior post, Wichita State because...well...they probably would look elsewhere and why would you welcome back a program who spurned you before?

I agree UTA and Milwaukee are not strong enough programs for the MVC (though for personal reasons I would love Milwaukee being added). Thus, it comes down to Murray State or do nothing. I think that there are good arguments both ways (and there are probably factors that none of us here have visibility to). One thing the writer misses is that decisions regarding conferences go beyond one single sport. Is Murray going to sufficiently invest in its other sports (not just facilities, but scholarships, etc.)? What is their situation with the state government (there have previously been major cutbacks of funding of state universities in KY - but UK and UL still got their funds because they are flagship schools?)

One last point....echoing some other comments...I wish that we had more truly passionate fans like you 1314.

What makes the MVC think that by selecting a school in a larger market that this will transfer to better recruiting for the schools in the MVC? We played for years against UIC and Chicago State and Loyola, and Detroit (large market) in various conferences yet I don't recall getting an awesome pipeline of talent from the Chicago or Detroit market since 1994. Scott Drew recruited much better talent from overseas than the Chicago or Detroit market. Valpo is already in the Chicago market yet only one Chicago team in our conference recruited well enough to become a contender in the NCAA tournament. Who are some of these studs we recruited from Chicago and Detroit or Indianapolis?  Does anyone really believe that the MVC teams will be more likely to recruit top talent they would not otherwise be able to recruit by asking UT-Arlington to join the MVC? What the hell are these big wigs in the MVC thinking? Doesn't make any sense to me. You don't need to be in a large market to hire good coaches and become a great recruiter and put together a winning basketball team. Why do the wigs at MVC think that something magic happens when you select teams which are in large markets? Just pick the solid mid-major teams that have shown they can be successful in basketball. (How about Murray State in the extremely large market of Murray Kentucky?) The money and the students will come from success, not a geographical location. Yeah, make sure there is a good fit with other sports, but focus on men's basketball success. Every aspect of the university will get better when you have a very successful men's basketball team. Even women's basketball.

Last week we drove on I35 from San Antonio through Austin, Waco and Fort Worth and the traffic was absolutely insane. The growth in Texas is certainly exceeding its infrastructure.

That being said, if the Valley wants to look at long term growth, perhaps they should consider adding 2 Texas schools. Just a thought. UMKC and Omaha would be bad selections. UIC is a maybe but Chicago is a mess.

We keep building new highways all over the place, but you are correct, that the population growth has gotten out of hand.  It really picked up during the Global Recession of 2008, as we were largely unaffected by layoffs in TX, and it has only increased with the job reports over the last few years.  People from the East and West coasts are flocking here, due to our mostly recession-proof industries, weather, and lower cost-of-living, but are now driving up home prices for those of us that have been here a long time.

Why would a truck stop town like Waco have such bad traffic jams?

Before you settle in to watch what's left of the MVC schedule tonight, take a look at part 2 of my series examining the top ten MVC men's basketball players in each class.  Today we'll look at the sophomores.

Part three of my five part series looking at all of the league's top players by class is now posted.  Take a look at the Missouri Valley's top ten juniors/third-year players below.  Krikke is featured.

My latest article features my take on the top ten seniors/fourth-year players in the league. But there are actually 21 guys featured total including five honorable mentions and six Belmont/Murray/UIC guys who would be in the top ten if they were in the MVC. Enjoy! Or don't!

Valpo has one guy in the top ten and one in honorable mentions (who I had as my first guy out).

As we hit the (scheduled) midway point of the league season, I have a new batch of power rankings. I'll also take a look at who I think each team's second best player is. It was kind of tough to pick for your team since your (arguably) two best players have missed significant time.  Thoughts on my choice?https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/power-rankings-at-the-sort-of-midway-point-2nd-best-players (https://www.missourivalleybeat.com/post/power-rankings-at-the-sort-of-midway-point-2nd-best-players)

I spoke to a fan of each of the incoming schools to get the dirt on why we should be excited their school is joining the league next year.  Here is part one focusing on Murray State, featuring @RacerJoeD.

Very nice comments in the interview with Racer Joe. I will add that another strength of their program is that they find good coaches who move on when they perform well, but are very able to find good replacements. This is essential to be a strong mid-major program.

I'm not sure where you are getting the formatting from in your posts, but for some reason you are setting the font size to 3px. I edited the latest post to make it legible.

Well, so far everyone isn't coming back!  The biggest surprise to me is Missouri State losing two projected starters to the transfer portal in JaMonta Black and Sharp, as well as Keaton Harvey.  Next is Evansville losing Shamar Givance, who was the motor that ran their team.  Next is a very big loss of Reeves at Illinois State.  So far, eight Valley teams have lost at least one to transfer, with UNI, Drake, UIC and...(knock on wood) Valpo untouched.
